Obras recientes de Sergio Camporeale (Galería Enlace)

I've read lots of comics this week, and the rest of my time has been entirely devoted to art galleries and political campaign with my friend Augusto Rey. Thinking about comics I have to say I love jumping in the middle of a title. It has always been one of my favorite exercises. Now I buy number ones like crazy (especially when I get a 75% discount in DCBS), but in the past I used to buy random issues of any given title, and I had so much fun reading them and feeling sort of lost because I didn’t know the characters or their abilities, or the direction of the story.

But the ignorance was part of the fun, if it was interesting enough I felt very motivated to make some research about it, and if you forget how unimportant comic books are for most people, that kind of interest is equivalent to the hunger for knowledge that drives scientists or experts around the world. So I love to feel lost, and I love to pick up a comic book and have no idea what was going on before, or what is going to happen afterwards. Sometimes it can be pretty exciting. And even the most incomprehensible and hermetic titles, if they are well written, can be really interesting.

Certainly the obsession for arcs and trades is not good for the industry, but I don’t think there is much I can do about it. Stand alone issues are no longer the norm. I’ve been reading comic books for a long time, but I became an obsessive collector after Superman # 12, published in 1988. Written and drawn by John Byrne, after I read it, Superman became my favorite character for years, I simply loved it, it was one of my favorite stories, and I don’t care if in a way it is a remake (I have read the original story, published in the fifties and is rubbish compared to Byrne's).

I loved it so much that I immediately started to get more Superman comics, and then Batman comics and then dozens of different titles. I was a DC fanboy (then I became a Marvel fan and now I'm more into independent publishers) and my era has always been the post crisis (post COIE) universe, not the post Infinite Crisis continuity. I have always been thankful for that single issue, because maybe if it weren’t for it I would have forgotten about comics a long time ago. Before Superman # 12 I had read some DC stuff, but it never grabbed me the way this particular issue did. And curiously it was a stand alone issue but at the same time it was sort of a crossover with Millennium (old eighties DC big event), so there was a lot of stuff going on that I had zero information about, but I was so interested that I started to buy as much comics as I could, and in a way that’s what we all keep doing today, buying as much issues as our budget allows us, forever chasing some childish or juvenile recondite pleasure.

  4. Hello. I've studied Ancient Greek at college, but I guess I could hardly use that to communicate with anyone from this century. Oh well, at least I recognize the alphabet.
