Fashion Beast # 10 - Alan Moore & Facundo Percio

Does everything need to be answered? I guess that’s the writer’s prerogative. But when the final issue of a miniseries is released, the reader will be expecting some sort of conclusion, a neat little bow that wraps up all the subplots and narrative premises. Now, if you’re waiting for such an ending in Fashion Beast, you will be disappointed. But, like I said, providing a proper resolution is the author’s decision. And in this case, the participation of Alan Moore, Malcolm McLaren and Anthony Johnston as authors makes it difficult to know exactly who was in charge of the final pages...

Tomboy is accused of sodomy and is quickly expelled from the army. If, as Foucault wrote "The sodomite was a recidivist, but the homosexual is now a species", Tomboy should be a part of that new species (except that his homosexuality inexplicably ceases to exist in this final chapter). He returns to Celestine’s HQ and creates an entire new line of clothing that defies the sexual repression instituted by the now deceased Celestine.
Doll versus Madame

Up to this point we had seen the results of the repression of sexuality in the fashion industry. Sexuality was unmentionable for Celestine, something impossible to speak about. Tomboy brings about a much needed sexual revolution, perhaps following the ideas of the psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich (who affirmed that to conserve your mental health you needed to liberate your sexual energy). The past was a dark age where sexuality had been something forbidden, and with the new designs proposed by Tomboy, everything is about to change.

At the beginning of the story Doll and Tomboy were presented as transsexual individuals, characters of an undefined gender and sexuality. Now, however, Doll is no longer an ambiguous character, she’s just a normal woman; and Tomboy is a just a man. At the end, the sexual union between Doll and Tomboy prevails. What started as a very audacious proposal turns out to be a foundational fiction, built upon the union of male and female heroes, the victory of fertility and the confirmation of the heterosexual normativity.

  1. This is not an Evangelion review! Hope you enjoyed this book, though it seemed to end with a sort of standard ending.

    1. Hi sdsichero! It's great to know I can always count on you (NG Evangelion should be ready next week). You're right, the ending was too conventional. Coming from Moore I expected something else.
