August Comics / Cómics de agosto

In August I received many great comics, such as Sacred Creatures, The Shaolin Cowboy and Astonishing X-Men. I was also very excited to get my hands on The Legion of Super-Heroes Silver Age Omnibus HC, I’m reading only a few pages per week, so it’ll last me for a while. I also enjoyed Marvel's reprints of classic Kirby stories. Busiek’s Astro City was impressive, but if only by a slight margin, I’d say the best comic of the month was Silver Surfer # 13. And now, without further ado, here are August comics as per solicitations:

En agosto recibí muchos cómics estupendos, como Sacred Creatures, The Shaolin Cowboy y Astonishing X-Men.

ASTONISHING X-MEN #2

ASTRO CITY #46

LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES SILVER AGE OMNIBUS HC

SACRED CREATURES #2
Adrian hace una llamada telefónica. Josh recibe algunas respuestas.

SHAOLIN COWBOY WHOLL STOP #2

Mythos X-Men - Paul Jenkins & Paolo Rivera

More than half a century ago, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created the world’s most famous mutants: the X-Men. The first issues were the kind of fun, fast-paced adventure most readers would come to expect from this legendary creative team. Stan Lee has explained in a few interviews that the reason why the X-Men were mutants in the first place did not necessarily have a dramatic intent. Tired of coming up with pseudo-scientific explanations (a radioactive spider, a gamma bomb, cosmic rays, secret chemical formulas, etc.), Stan Lee decided that if the X-Men were all mutants, then he wouldn’t have to come up with explanations for their powers, after all, they had been born that way, and each one of them possessed an X-tra ability that turned them into X-Men.

However, a couple of years later this new Marvel title started to evolve, or rather to mutate in ways that perhaps Lee and Kirby hadn’t envisioned in 1963. If at the beginning being a mutant was a simply a way of explaining why certain individuals had superpowers, by 1965 being a mutant triggered a wide array of dramatic possibilities: intolerance, prejudice, bigotry, and so on. When Lee and Kirby completed the Sentinels saga, they set the foundations of the future tone of the series: instead of inconsequential and swashbuckling adventures, the X-Men would become a complex metaphor for discrimination and oppressed minorities.

In “Mythos: X-Men” (originally published in Mythos # 1, March 2006), British writer Paul Jenkins reinterprets the classic first issue of the X-Men, this time giving special attention to the discrimination between homo sapiens (regular people) and homo superior (mutants). The opening sequence this time revolves around Magneto, who is about to execute “three red-blooded American youths” who have committed a hate crime. They have murdered a 12-year-old mutant. And that is something that the Master of Magnetism cannot forgive. In an intense soliloquy, Magneto explains that hate crimes continue to be prevalent in the US: in the 50s, white supremacists would murder black men, in subsequent decades the victims would be gays.

One of my favorite moments takes place in the conversation between Professor X and Magneto. They both want to ensure the wellbeing of the mutant population, but they have such different approaches that they have become enemies. The conversation between Charles Xavier and the Master of Magnetism is an accurate portrayal of what makes these characters so essential to the Marvel Universe, and Jenkins excels at pointing out the political and philosophical differences of these two leaders.
Judge, Jury & Executioner / Juez, jurado y verdugo
“Mythos” was fully painted by Paolo Rivera in a style that effortlessly mixes realism with expressionism. In the panel in which we see the X-Men for the first time we can clearly see that each face has been inspired by a model from real life, and yet the image retains a special quality, a certain creative freedom and magic that turn this into an artistic achievement that is never restricted by strict realism or pure expressionism. Every page illustrated by Rivera is delightful, and one cannot help but to spend more than a few minutes admiring his elegant brush strokes and his vivid and rich color palette.

Iceman (Bobby Drake), Beast (Hank McCoy), Angel (Warren Worthington III), Cyclops (Scott Summers) & Marvel Girl (Jean Grey)
Professor X and his students / el profesor X y sus estudiantes
X-Men versus Magneto

Against all odds, I was actually able to go to the movies a couple of times in August. First I saw Christopher Nolan’s most recent film Dunkirk (2017), a sober and realistic take on WWII. Fionn Whitehead is a young soldier who has no intentions of becoming a hero, he merely wants to survive. The historical aspect and the particular setting of Dunkirk turns this into an unusual but interesting approach to war, however this film differs completely from Nolan’s previous works. Instead of being character-driven or story oriented, Dunkirk is more akin to a documentary that follows a day in the lives of young British soldiers, interpreted by a talented cast (Aneurin Barnard, Barry Keoghan, Jack Lowden, Cillian Murphy, Harry Styles) as well as officers like Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road) and Kenneth Branagh. It may not be Nolan’s best effort, but it’s still worth watching.

Matt Reeves directed War for the Planet of the Apes (2017), the third installment in this new franchise. I have to admit I haven’t seen the previous ones, so I didn’t have the same emotional connection other people might have with the characters, so perhaps that’s why I didn’t find it so appealing. Even so, there are moments that I  enjoyed and over all I think the proposal was quite interesting, even if its development could’ve been better. Woody Harrelson’s performance as an enraged military leader is top notch.

Nominated for 6 Academy Awards, Manchester by the Sea (2016) is an independent film written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan. This is an intense and thought-provoking film that deals with relationship fallouts, with the difficulty of accepting responsibility for one’s own actions and most especially with the idea of loss and mourning. In what might be the best performance of his career, Casey Affleck embodies the isolation and the defeated behavior of a man who has lost everything after a fatal accident that destroyed his family and his marriage with Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine). The triggering event of the film is the death of the protagonist’s brother, and the strange last will and testament left behind. A man who can barely take care of himself is now tasked with the difficult mission of looking out after his deceased brother’s son, a teenager extraordinarily played by Lucas Hedges (The Zero Theorem). While Casey Affleck tries to rebuild his life, overcome his alcoholism and find a way out of a labyrinth of misery, addiction and violence, Lucas Hedges experiences the full awakening of his sexuality and the necessity to forget about death by losing his virginity. But the relationship between uncle and nephew is tense, difficult, and despite all the protagonist’s efforts, the last act of the film has nothing to do with the typical ‘Hollywood ending’. Smart, powerful, deeply evocative and full of pure emotion, Manchester by the Sea is definitely one of 2016’s best films.

Joachim Trier’s Louder Than Bombs (2015) is a subtle and yet heartbreaking drama about a family that must deal with the traumatic demise of Isabelle Huppert, a professional photographer who traveled to the most dangerous countries, who was in the front line in many wars and who survived things that trained soldiers could not, only to die under mysterious circumstances in a peaceful American suburb; her husband, Gabriel Byrne, is now a grieving man trying to slowly reassemble his life. But perhaps those who suffer the most are the children: Jesse Eisenberg (The End of the Tour), a young college professor who lives a seemingly successful life, and yet feels a great emptiness within him, and most especially Devin Druid, his younger brother, who has been traumatized by the death of his mother. Devin Druid is an amazing actor, able to build a complex character that becomes the central dramatic element of the film. Filmmaker Trier excels at portraying the inner conflicts, fears and hopes of an old man (the father), an adult man (the older son) and a teenager (the younger brother). A remarkable film. I highly recommend it.

Nima Nourizadeh directs American Ultra (2015), a fast-paced movie that combines action with comedy. Jesse Eisenberg (The Double) is the typical stoner guy, trapped in a dead-end job; the only good thing about his life is his girlfriend Kristen Stewart (Café Society). Until one day, the protagonist is ‘activated’ by a CIA agent and he discovers that he has superior fighting skills, reflexes and knowledge of all sorts of weapons. I certainly enjoyed American Ultra, there are some really funny moments and I think Jesse Eisenberg does a really good job in his role, however there are also a few plot holes. In any case, it’s unlikely we’ll get to see a sequel.

Matt Reeves dirigió War for the Planet of the Apes (2017), la tercera entrega de esta nueva franquicia.
