September comics / Cómics de setiembre

I celebrated my first month here in California by reading a fine selection of comic books! I really enjoyed the first issue of Border Town; Thor and Marvel Two-in-One were pretty good. American Gods and LOEG Tempest were great! And the absolute edition of The Killing Joke is really impressive. However, if I had to choose, my favorite comic of the month would be Batman: Damned # 1, which has quickly become the most DC controversial comic due to some nude scenes involving the Dark Knight (DC decided to censor all future editions and remove every trace of nudity). And without further ado, here are September comics, as per solicitations.

ABSOLUTE BATMAN THE KILLING JOKE HC

(A) Alan Moore, Brian Bolland (CA) Brian Bolland. One of the most popular graphic novels of all time, this twisted tale of insanity and perseverance is presented as an Absolute Edition for the first time. Looking to prove that any man can be pushed past his breaking point to madness, the Joker attempts to drive Commissioner Gordon insane. Refusing to give up, Gordon struggles to maintain his sanity with the help of Batman in a desperate effort to best the madman. This edition collects BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE with Bolland's reimagined colors and the original edition's colors, a story from BATMAN BLACK AND WHITE and Joker artwork from Bolland's long career with DC, including never-before-published artwork.

AMERICAN GODS: MY AINSEL #6

(W) Neil Gaiman, P. Craig Russell (A) P. Craig Russell, Scott Hampton (CA) Glenn Fabry, Adam Brown.

BATMAN DAMNED #1

(W) Brian Azzarello, (A) Lee Bermejo. The Joker is dead. There is no doubt about that. But whether Batman finally snapped his scrawny neck or some other sinister force in Gotham City did the deed is still a mystery. Problem is, Batman can't remember… and the more he digs into this labyrinthine case, the more his mind starts to doubt everything he's uncovering. So who better to set him straight than… John Constantine? Problem with that is as much as John loves a good mystery, he loves messing with people's heads even more. So with John's 'help,' the pair will delve into the sordid underbelly of Gotham as they race toward the mind-blowing truth of who murdered The Joker. BATMAN: DAMNED is a bimonthly super-natural horror story told by two of comics' greatest modern creators-a visceral thrill-ride that proudly puts the 'black' in BLACK LABEL.

BORDER TOWN #1

(W) Eric M. Esquivel, (A) Ramon Villalobos. When a crack in the border between worlds releases an army of monsters from Mexican folklore, the residents of Devil's Fork, AZ, blame the ensuing weirdness-the shared nightmares, the otherworldly radio transmissions, the mysterious goat mutilations-on 'God-dang illegals.' With racial tensions supernaturally charged, it's up to new kid in town Frank Dominguez and a motley crew of high school misfits to discover what's really going on in this town torn between worlds.

LOEG TEMPEST #2

(W) Alan Moore (A/CA) Kevin O'Neill. Opening with a 1919 deathmatch between two American superhumans in the ruins of Utopia, the second issue of Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's final volume of the beloved comic series takes its readers on a breath-taking ride over a waterfall of storytelling styles, from a startling 21st century Lincoln Island and its current incarnation of the legendary Captain Nemo, through a New York coping with an ageing costume-hero population, to a London where a drastic escalation is commenced by the rejuvenated sociopath controlling MI5. All this, and a further reprinted adventure of 1960s super-team The Seven Stars awaits in issue two of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Volume IV: The Tempest.

MARVEL-TWO-IN-ONE #9

(W) Chip Zdarsky (A) Ramon K. Perez (CA) Alan Davis. RETURN OF THE FANTASTIC FOUR THE FANTASTIC FOUR are BACK! • But there's something quite off about them… • Ben and Johnny, powerless and stranded, are in the fight of their lives as NEXT OF KIN continues! Rated T

THOR #5

(W) Jason Aaron (CA) Michael Del Mundo. GET READY FOR KING THOR AND THE PHOENIX, BUB! In the far future, All-Father Thor reignited the Earth and sparked new life in the universe. But now, something is wiping out other worlds - and Midgard won't be far behind. Luckily, Thor isn't the only god left. But is the Phoenix-possessed Wolverine a friend or foe? Rated T+ Cover price $3.99.

ABSOLUTE BATMAN THE KILLING JOKE HC

AMERICAN GODS: MY AINSEL #6

Neil Gaiman, P. Craig Russell y Scott Hampton.

BATMAN DAMNED #1

  1. I had not heard about the nudity. Now I suppose those early versions will be valuable. If you got one, take care of it and in 50 years you might make a million dollars off it.
