Common Grounds # 6 - Troy Hickman, Dan Jurgens & Sam Kieth

If we’re lucky some comic books come to us exactly at the right moment in our lives. Over a year ago, I was visiting Davis comic book store, and I found the first 5 issues of Common Grounds (the sixth and last one, I had to track down on my own). As soon as I started reading issue # 1 I was hooked. Troy Hickman is an amazing writer and what he did in this Image / Top Cow miniseries is an accomplishment worthy of the best days of Busiek’s Astro City.
Rodolfo Migliari

It sure took me a while to review the whole miniseries, but what I started many months ago it’s coming to an end now. In “American Pi” (July 2004), Hickman works with famous artist Sam Kieth, whose notable work not only includes Sandman but also other more personal creations such as The Maxx. So far, in the Common Grounds universe we haven’t seen a hero akin to Captain America, someone who upholds the ideals of the nation and not the divisive politics. However, even if she has her heart in the right place, some people don’t seem to agree.

In an inspired speech, the protagonist of this story tries to convince an angry mob of the fact that the US, with all its flaws and problems, is still the land of opportunity, it’s still the place where you get a chance to improve your life. I’d say that when writing this story Hickman was probably thinking of John F Kennedy’s popular quote: “do not ask what your country can do for you, but what can you do for your country”. Although it’s difficult to delve deep into superheroes, patriotism and politics in a handful of pages, I’d say the result here is pretty good.

In “Loose Ends”, the second story, we get to see a TV show in which Michael O’Brian, the founder of Common Ground, is about to be interviewed. In a heartfelt confession, O’Brian recalls his past as a superhero and how proud he felt when his son, despite the lack of superpowers, donned a superhero costume to carry on with the family tradition; unfortunately, a tragic accident cost him his life. The grieving father then decided to start with the concept of a coffee shop that would always be a symbol of truce and an oasis of peace for superheros and supervillains.
Sam Kieth

The last story was illustrated by Dan Jurgens, a man responsible for drawing the main Superman titles for almost a decade. Here Jurgens proves again why he’s one of the best superhero artists in the business. The cover of Common Grounds # 6 is by Rodolfo Migliari, an Argentinian artist whose stunning images channelize the best of Alex Ross. And this is the end. Hopefully one day soon Troy Hickman and the fantastic creative team that worked with him will return to Common Grounds. We definitely need more comics like these!

Common Grounds # 1 - Troy Hickman, Dan Jurgens and Oeming

Until a few days ago, I had never heard about Troy Hickman, only Jonathan Hickman (no relation). It’s quite unfortunate to see how, sometimes, some of the most talented writers and artists, for one reason or another, don’t become famous, while less talented people make it to the spotlight. The world is never fair, I guess, but in any case, I consider myself extremely lucky for running into Common Grounds, a miniseries published by Top Cow / Image Comics in 2004 which received multiple nominations to the Eisner Awards, and in my opinion deserved to win them all.

Rodolfo Migliari

So what is Common Grounds? “It’s the place where everybody does know your name, ‘cause sometimes that’s your arch-foe sitting at the end of the counter. It’s the place where heroes and villains can’t have a senses-shattering slugfest, but they can toss back a cup o’ joe and a few crullers, and shoot the breeze. So check your weapons and attitude at the door, and come on in. Welcome to Common Grounds. May we take your order?”, and that, in a nutshell, is the premise for this fascinating and groundbreaking miniseries.

“Beyond the Speed of Life” (February 2004) begins with Ed Franklin, a journalist bored with his mundane life and fascinated by superheroes, who is about to interview the famous Speeding Bullet (this universe’s equivalent of the Flash). Speeding Bullet is a superhero tired of living with superpowers and wishing to be an ordinary man, like the journalist. His superfast metabolism forces him to eat constantly, and because of his superspeed all his girlfriends eventually break up with him: “when we were, you know, intimate. She got some terrible friction burns”.
Dan Jurgens

Throughout the interview, the superhero proves to be more vulnerable than anyone else: “my hero was falling apart”, affirms Ed. Indeed, Speeding Bullet confesses his frustrations and the painful aspects of being the world’s fastest man. In a heartbreaking scene, Speeding Bullet admits he has even contemplated suicide. Fortunately, Ed manages to cheer up the hero, and after leaving Common Grounds, he realizes how grateful he is for having a mundane life.

These pages are penciled by legendary artist Dan Jurgens, famous for his long run in Superman in the 90s, and inked by Al Vey with colors by Guy Major. An expert in drawing superheroes, Jurgens proves to be a master when it comes to conveying deep feelings, and changing from one emotional register to another. Jurgen’s unparalleled characters design, his dynamic sequences and his more peaceful and down-to-Earth moments round up this amazing first tale.
Dan Jurgens

The second tale is titled “Head Games”, penciled and inked by Michael Avon Oeming, whose cartoonish style adds humor to an already hilarious script. Superhero Mental Midget and supervillain Man-Witch find themselves in a rather pressing emergency: they both desperately need to go to the toilet as soon as possible! While taking a dump, they start talking to each other, sharing stories about their past and the peculiarities of their powers. It’s certainly quite an unusual truce, but the needs of the body will supersede anything else. in just a few pages, Hickman creates two fascinating characters and a complex relationship, hero or villain, it doesn’t matter, they are 100% humans. Finally, I must also mention Rodolfo Migliari’s beautiful cover, in which we see Mental Midget at the top of the image and Speeding Bullet running towards us. Migliari hyper-realistic style will remind us of Alex Ross, but this fabulous Argentinian artist always adds his unique touch.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Bienvenido a Common Grounds.

Legion of Super-Heroes es bastante bueno.

LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES # 9

MARVEL #1 (OF 6)

SPIDER-MAN: MARVELS SNAPSHOT #1

THE SCUMBAG #1

Planetary # 0 - Warren Ellis & John Cassaday

I was convinced I had read every Planetary story ever published, but turns out I was wrong. The same thing happened to me with Young Avengers in 2013, I started with the first issue and I didn’t know there was a special preview that I ended up acquiring at a later date. So in both cases I ended up reading what would be issue # 0 a long time after I had read everything.

“Nuclear Spring” was originally published as a backup story in Gen13 # 33 (September 1998), published by Image. That is certainly something interesting, as DC was still in the process of acquiring Wildstorm, an imprint that was part of Image / Homage Comics (a subsidiary of Jim Lee’s Aegis Entertainment) at the time. Planetary # 1 is announced as a new title coming out in 4 months, and there is even a beautiful pencil drawing by Cassaday as part of the advertising. However, seems like the acquisition process took longer than expected, and exactly a year later, DC would be publishing Planetary # 1, under the independent imprint of Wildstorm (which disappeared in 2010).

“Sometimes, ordinary people uncover things that are best left covered. Sometimes, things best left covered emerge into ordinary life and do not have the world’s best interests at heart. These are times when Planetary arrive -invited or not…”, that’s what Planetary is about. And certainly, this first story shows us the Archeologists of the Impossible doing what they do best.

Warren Ellis comes up with a captivating story about a scientist who has created a “quantum box” for “rotating things out of reality”. However, when they test this new invention, the scientist must save the life of the woman he loves, who has accidentally stumbled onto the testing site. Exactly as it happens with the Hulk, the scientist receives the full impact of the explosion and he transforms himself into a monster far more inhuman than the Hulk.

Cassaday’s art is wonderful, although not as depurated as it would become later, he’s still transitioning from his late 90s style, which we were able to see in titles like Ka-Zar or Union Jack. However, the cover is absolutely exquisite. Just the design and the composition are miles ahead of anything else that was being published at the time, and Cassaday’s attention to details brings a unique sense of elegance to the cover. Truly magnificent!

After eating turkey and ham, I enjoyed the long weekend since I had plenty of time to read my new comics. I really liked the first issue of Bendis & Sook’s Legion of Super-Heroes, and this might very well be the first time I follow a regular series from DC since 2006 or thereabouts. Aaron continues to delight his readers with both Conan the Barbarian and King Thor. Die, American Gods and Invaders continue to be good. Die, American Gods e Invaders continúan siendo buenos.

AMERICAN GODS #7

DOLLAR COMICS SWAMP THING

LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES: MILLENNIUM #2

Die - Kieron Gillen & Stephanie Hans

I’ve explained a few times that I consider myself lucky for having had access to a lot of very old comics as a child, and also a lot of old TV shows and cartoons. For reasons too complex to explain here, for many years it was difficult to find new comics in Peru, which is why when I started collecting comic books in the late 90s, I wasn’t reading anything published in that decade but rather titles from the 80s (which were amazing and much better in general than most of what came out in the 90s). And before we had cable, the options for TV programs was limited to say the least, which explains why I used to watch animated series that had come out more than a decade before, such as Dungeons and Dragons (from 1983!).

I always loved Dungeons and Dragons, there was something special about that group of kids trapped in a fantasy world, forever looking for a way to return home. But after 3 seasons the cartoon was canceled and they never returned to the real world. As Kieron Gillen explains, he often wondered what happened to that group of kids. And I think that happens to us, sometimes; we can get so incredibly attached to a work of fiction, a novel, a comic book, a TV show, that when they’re canceled, we suddenly start asking questions about them; which proves, I guess, that a fantasy world can affect our reality in ways that we could not have anticipated. Part of that magic process, of that unexplainable attachment with something that isn’t real, is what inspired the British writer to come up with Die, the singular form of dice, in a clear allusion to fantasy role playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons.

In Die we have a group of adults “contrasting their teenage fantasies with the realities of where their lives ended up” but we also have so much more than that, as Gillen himself explains in the afterword: “the idea that part of me did disappear into a fantasy world at the age of sixteen and never came out”. And that is what happens in the first issue of Die (published in December 2018): a group of young role-playing gamers are trapped in a fantasy world and return to Earth years later, but much has changed in them. Sol, the grandmaster, was not able to return. And for Ash, Chuck, Matt, Angela and Isabelle, the years go by until they’re in their 40s and they experiment different levels of midlife crisis. Now that they’re old, tired, frustrated, sad, lonely and divided, they’re summoned or rather kidnapped by Sol, and end up in the fantasy world again.

This will be the fascinating starting point of a series of adventures in which Gillen attempts to deconstruct the basic notions of the fantasy genre while imbuing new life into the culture of role playing. “Die is a dark fantasy game. It can (and often does) edge towards horror”, affirms the British author. And some of the horror sequences are unforgettable, like the one in which Ash remembers her lover, a teenage knight whose power was based on joy, “As he rode off, he said he would not rest until he had gazed upon my perfection once more”, remembers Ash. The knight died not too long after that encounter, but he was not able to rest due to the oath he had sworn: “Three years after that, my eyes rotted. Even though you are before me, I still cannot see you”, utters the knight. Here horror and tragedy are so carefully intertwined that one cannot but celebrate Gillen’s talent as a writer.
The first game / el primer juego
Gillen also pays homage to J.R.R. Tolkien and at the same time defies the reader’s expectations. Because the Hobbiton that we see here is caught in the trenches of WWI, and the hobbit that would be Frodo Baggins (magnificently depicted by Stephanie Hans) dies in the trenches, after writing a letter for his loved ones. Of course, there are also dragons, ancient gods and unimaginable threats designed by Sol, who years ago was a friend and now is a megalomaniac and a dictator. That is a very interesting idea that I wish Gillen would have explored more carefully. In the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon, the main villain was Venger, in this universe it is Sol. The main difference between them is that Venger was a stranger that had nothing to do with the kids’ past, but Sol was one of them, a dear friend who is now a deeply disturbed individual with more than enough power to create or destroy his own world.
back in the game / de vuelta al juego
Stephanie Hans provides beautiful illustrations, combining serenity or dramatic tension when it’s necessary, and creating a unique aura of dreamlike qualities. The French artist pencils, inks and colors every page, creating a unique and cohesive look; in addition to that, her impressive covers are also enhanced by the innovative design by Rian Hugues. This is, without a doubt, one of Image’s best-looking books. And the one with the best stories I’ve read in the past few months.

the past: teenage romance / el pasado: romance adolescente
the horror of the present / el horror del presente
The hobbits are in the trenches  / Los hobbits están en las trincheras
Before the last battle / Antes de la última batalla
