August films / películas de agosto

After a couple of months of reducing my film list, in August I decided to watch as many movies as I could. I tremendously enjoyed James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), a fast-paced space odyssey. Saying it’s 100% action and adventure would be an understatement. Chris Pratt (Star-Lord) and a group of outcasts team up to save the galaxy. Like I’ve said before, 2014 has been the best year for Marvel’s filmic adaptations. Guardians of the Galaxy has a lot of emotive moments, character development and unforgettable scenes.

Hello I Must Be Going (2012), directed by Todd Louiso, is an extraordinary independent film very much in the vein of Woody Allen’s productions. Melanie Lynskey, a neurotic 30-something divorcee, falls in love with 19-year-old Christopher Abbott. Passion overwhelms the couple, and secrecy becomes a burden to them. There are some fascinating insights about the consumerist mindset of the American upper class and some really smart observations about life, marriage and, of course, divorce.

Kieran Mulroney and Michele Mulroney direct Paper Man (2009), a wonderful analysis on relationships, focusing on Jeff Daniels and his inability to have healthy relationships with other people. But when he meets Emma Stone he finds a kindred soul that allows him to forget his inner conflicts. Friendship and maturity are part of an equation that the protagonists finally begin to understand. Kieran Culkin and Ryan Reynolds also play important roles in this poignant and melancholic film.

Guillermo Arriaga’s The Burning Plain (2008) is an impressive chronicle about the lives of three different women: Charlize Theron, Jennifer Lawrence and Kim Basinger. The filmmaker explores the forbidden romances of these women, and how their decisions have long-lasting and traumatic consequences.

I couldn’t stop laughing with Jonathan Lynn’s Wild Target (2010), a hilarious comedy centered on Bill Nighy, England’s best professional killer… until he’s asked to eliminate Emily Blunt and falls in love with her. He also takes Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley in “Harry Potter”) as his apprentice, and together they find themselves in the funniest situations.

As everyone knows, I’m a big horror fan, so I found Shark Night (2011) quite entertaining. There is a lot of suspense here as Sara Paxton and her college friends Dustin Milligan and Chris Zylka (famous for his role in “Kaboom” and now in HBO’s successful series “The Leftovers”) try survive in a lake infested by sharks.

Written and directed by Todd Lincoln, The Apparition (2012) kept me at the edge of my seat. This is a bold reinterpretation of the classic “haunted house” genre. Ashley Greene, Sebastian Stan and Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy in “Harry Potter”) will have to struggle for their lives. A true example of real horror!

Director Antonio Hens had already surprised me with “Malas compañías”, but La partida (2013) was even better. This is a revealing portrayal of the lives of two Cuban teenagers: Reinier Díaz and Milton García, one of them is a prostitute and has sex with tourists, but in the end the two of them fall in love. This is an intense drama, that shows the hardships of gay young people in Cuba, their money problems, their identity crisis, etc.

From Netherlands comes the best of the month: Jongens (2014), directed by Mischa Kamp. This is a very intense coming of age story that delves deep into the inner conflicts of homosexual teenagers. Gijs Blom and Ko Zandvliet are two boys that become friends, and then they start developing stronger feelings towards each other. Kamp is a remarkable director, able to capture the painful and difficult moments experienced by these kids.

I also had the chance to watch a few short films, such as the Mexican production Mari Pepa (2011), an interesting tale about a group of teens who form a rock band. Intimism and realism define this short film.

From Belgium comes Badpakje 46 (2011), a heartfelt depiction of teenage obesity, and the need of a fat girl to fit in. Tender and sad moments are important elements in this drama.

Benjamin Parent’s Ce n’est pas un film de cow-boys (2012) is a brilliant example of visual economy and narrative intensity.  After watching “Brokeback Mountain”, Finnegan Oldfield and another boy talk about what it means to be gay, and two girls also talk about the same thing, and they all do it with humor and innocence.

Dans la cour des grands (2011) is an expressive short film about teenage sexuality, bullying and the lack of limits and control. I must say that this was particularly powerful and strong, which is why I loved it.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" tiene muchos momentos emotivos, personajes bien desarrollados y escenas inolvidables.
