Neon Genesis Evangelion Vol. 9 - Yoshiyuki Sadamoto

The Fifth Child / el quinto niño
“Whenever it counts the most… all I can do is watch, unable to help”. Or do what I want, I might add. As teenagers we struggle with ourselves, we try to pursue our heart’s desire but we have neither the resolution to follow through nor the capacity to identify our authentic wishes. Perhaps that clarity of mind comes with the years, and we may call that maturity. But the truth is that the realm of adolescence is beset by insecurities, fears, frustrations and unfathomable yearnings, undecipherable and yet intense.

This nebulous search is what forces Shinji Ikari to play the role of a mere voyeur, unable to do what he must. I still remember what it felt like, for me, to be a 14 year-old boy and to find myself relegated to the sidetracks of my own life. I would open my eyes and see the world and those around me, and although I often experienced to urge to act, to satisfy my longings, I was always left with the existential doubt of what was that thing I had to do or how could I give shape to what I wanted, how to at least sculpt it in comprehensible words or symbols.

In Neon Genesis Evangelion’s ninth volume (containing stages 57 through 63: “The Fifth Child”, “Rejection”, “Pride”, “Doll”, “The Spear of Longinus”, “Distance” and “Returning Fire”) Kaworu Nagisa finally meets Shinji. This first encounter takes place in a church in ruins, where a piano has been preserved. Seating in the piano, we see Kaworu, a 14-year-old kid with ashen hair, pale skin and crimson eyes. He’s playing “Ode to Joy”, although he claims to have no knowledge about classical music. His junior high school uniform makes Shinji curious, and they start talking. Kaworu’s body language is that of a true teenager, the way he slouches almost lazily, and his languid yet graceful movements soon make Shinji nervous. What is Shinji afraid of? Is it the ominous aura of this boy? Or is it something else, something in the way he carries himself, with a complete disrespect towards Shinji’s reservations?

Certainly, the two boys have nothing in common. Shinji feels pity for a lonely kitten, but he knows he can’t take care of it. As the cub follows the two teenagers, Shinji admits that he has no other choice but to abandon the feline. Kaworu, instantly, picks up the animal from the floor and breaks its neck. In his opinion, abandoning it would ensure a low and painful death, a quick execution is indeed a true act of mercy. Shinji is horrified at the coldness displayed by the other boy, and maybe he’s slightly disturbed when he finds out that Kaworu is the fifth child, a new Eva pilot.

Meanwhile, the once brave Asuka has lost all of her confidence. After her failure at the battlefield and her defeat at the hands of two different angels, she feels lost. She can no longer get in synchrony with Unit-02; she hates herself and her own body, she is repulsed by the fact that she is menstruating, something that she takes as a very irritating weakness (just like any other teenager, she also has a hard time dealing with her body); at this particularly vulnerable juncture, she meets Kaworu, who steps into the ladies bathroom. Asuka yells at him and accuses him of being a pervert. Kaworu simply asks what is a pervert, in the same way he doesn’t know anything about music he’s unfamiliar with the most common social terms.

As the alarm goes off, Shinji and Kaworu are left inside NERV’s HQ, and Asuka and Rei prepare for battle. With low synchrony rates, afflicted by childhood memories and deeply saddened by Kaji’s death, Asuka is, at the lowest point of her life, and is rapidly overpowered by the angel Arael. Flying above the stratosphere, the angel is impervious to the Eva’s weaponry. Arael attacks with a beam of light, a mental probe that digs inside Asuka’s memories, reviving her psychological traumas and effectively “raping her soul”. Confronted with the image of her demented mother, living proof of how “the heart isn’t filled as easily as the womb”, Asuka’s mind collapses. It’s only thanks to Rei Ayanami’s timely intervention that she survives. After retrieving the Spear of Longinus from the dead body of Adam, the first angel, Rei manages to annihilate Arael. Subsequently, Kaworu and Rei will have to fight against the angel Armisael.

Stage 62, aptly titled “Distance”, explores the physical proximity and how it all translates in actions, the things that we do or stop dong with other people. After a training exercise, Shinji takes a shower. Kaworu tests his reaction as he enters naked in the same shower stall, alleging that he needs soap. For Shinji, it all comes down to sexual tension, awkwardness and restrained impulses. For Kaworu, this is all a game, a fun experiment. There’s something deliciously liberating in the sexual polymorphism that characterizes adolescence; possibly, this is the only stage of human growth in which we can still experiment with our bodies and our sexuality, free of labels and categorizations; if the world of adults is ruled by rigidness and prejudices, the teenage world is the last bastion of freedom. The only safe haven where, as Foucault would have demanded, there are no social constructs or limits, only “bodies and pleasures”.

I’ll never forget what a strong impact this sequence had in my life, when I first saw it on episode 26 of the anime. Many of my manga-obsessed friends simply discarded the moment as a ‘gay scene’. But there is nothing intrinsically gay there, only an invitation, a glimpse of bodily exploration, a trace of what could have happened, of possibility versus reality. In the end, Shinji is afraid and he nervously steps out of the shower. “You seem adverse to me coming close… yet whenever you get upset, you lay your hand upon me”, affirms Kaworu. As the angel Tabris, humanity and human emotions are a fascinating mystery to him. The two teenagers are still discovering their bodies, deciphering their feelings, and when Kaworu asks Ikari “You don’t like me?”, a frightened Shinji pauses for a long moment, and then replies “No”. Is the pause an indicative of doubt? Of indecision?

Uncertainty was as much a part of me as it was a part of Shinji. We were very close in that regard. And perchance that’s why we were both victims of those who had the confidence and the firm voice of command that we always lacked. After the shower incident, Shinji complains about being exploited by Kaworu; he’s sick and tired of being exploited by everyone, but what he doesn’t realize is that until he attains a proper level of self-esteem and assurance he will continue to be the victim. I learnt that the hard way, and Shinji is just beginning to understand it.

What does Shinji feel for Kaworu?  /
