December films / películas de diciembre

Happy New Year! Let’s celebrate the beginning of 2024 combining December films with the Best of 2023 List. I’ll start with one of my favorite productions of the year: written and directed by Emerald Fennell, Saltburn (2023) is a film that some might find disturbing and others quite fascinating. Barry Keoghan (The Killing of a Sacred Deer) is an unpopular student at Oxford University, where he meets Jacob Elordi (Euphoria), a wealthy, charismatic and handsome student admired by everyone. An unlikely friendship develops between the two young men, and soon the rich kid invites the other one to his summer palace, accompanied by the parents, Lord Richard E. Grant and wife Rosamund Pike (Hostiles), and some extravagant family friends such as Carey Mulligan. One of the most controversial scenes of the film takes place during this summer vacation, as Barry Keoghan secretly watches how Jacob Elordi masturbates and, when no one else is around, avidly drinks his friend’s semen. The protagonist infatuation with his friend goes beyond mere sexual desire, as it encompasses a need to not just fit in but also to acquire that which has never been a part of his life: maximum opulence, tradition and prestige of royalty. However, when the main character’s obsession with his friend starts creating problems, he’s quickly expelled from paradise and asked to leave the premises. What follows next is the protagonist’s twisted and cruel plan to regain control over his fate. Fennell creates complex and manipulative characters, which on the surface seem to live hedonistic lives but that, deep down, carry a lot of repressed traumas. A unique atmosphere full of intensity and energy, plus top-notch performances and a clever script turn this into a must-see.

Ridley Scott’s Napoleon (2023) is an impressive historical film about one of the most famous military figures in the world: Napoleon Bonaparte, magnificently played by Joaquin Phoenix (Joker). We see the early days of Napoleon and how he quickly rises in rank, until he becomes the most powerful man in France. He falls madly in love with Josephine Bonaparte, exquisitely played by Vanessa Kirby (The Crown), but while he’s busy with military campaigns trying to conquer the world, his wife is having sex with other men. We get to see the man behind the myth, and thanks to Scott’s strengths as a storyteller we can equally admire Napoleon’s brilliant strategies and courage in battle while we are surprised by how easily he’s deceived by other people, such as the Tsar Alexander, amazingly played by Edouard Philipponnat. With breathtaking scenarios and exotic locations, this never-ending war has two difficult moments, the unsuccessful incursion in Russia and the defeat at the hands of the Duke of Wellington, superbly played by Rupert Everett, in the battle of Waterloo. Scott summarizes Napoleon’s life in 2 hours and 40 minutes, and he also manages to create interesting and even contradictory characters, which makes everything feel even more real. Definitely one of the best films of 2023.

Brian Helgeland’s Finestkind (2023) takes place in a coastal town in Boston. Ben Foster is a fisherman without much of a future who welcomes his half-brother Toby Wallace, recent college grad, into his team of fishermen. However, after breaking the rules and receiving a steep fine, they must find a way to save their boat. Wallace’s girlfriend is Jenna Ortega, and she suggests the possibility of smuggling heroine to make enough money to pay the fine, but that plan actually makes things even worse. At its core, Finestkind is a story about brotherhood and the strong bonds within family, but it’s also an example of how quicky things can fall apart after one simple mistake. Tommy Lee Jones (The Family) is Foster’s father and his performance is brilliant. I’ll avoid spoilers but I’ll just say that the last scenes with Tommy Lee Jones are the best part of Finestkind and a good way of wrapping up the plot.

I loved the initial concept of Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City (2023). Bryan Cranston (All the Way) is the narrator who tells us about the life of playwright Edward Norton (Fight Club) who has a secret homosexual affair with his main actor. In the first narrative level we’re made aware that everything revolves around theater, in the second narrative level we get to see what happens behind the scenes while in the third narrative level we get to enjoy the actual theater play. Jason Schwartzman (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) is a man mourning the death of his wife, Margot Robbie (Barbie), willing to leave his children under the care of his father-in-law, Tom Hanks (A Man Called Otto). However, while stranded in Asteroid City, the protagonist meets and falls in love with theater actress Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow); everything seems to be fine, until the town receives the unexpected visit of an alien, fantastically played by Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic World Dominion). There are some good scenes and funny sequences, but I expected more from Wes Anderson. As usual, the cast includes a veritable legion of famous actors, such as Jeffrey Wright (The French Dispatch), Liev Schreiber, Steve Carell (Beautiful Boy), Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk About Kevin) and Willem Dafoe (4:44 Last Day on Earth).

Emerald Fennell writes and directs Promising Young Woman (2020), a remarkable opera prima from a very talented filmmaker. Carey Mulligan (Shame) is a woman in her early 30s who is still living with her parents after dropping out from med school. No one seems to understand why she seems devoid of hope and plans for her future, but what nobody knows is that she has a secret life. At night, she goes to bars and night clubs and pretends to be completely drunk, an easy target for men who take her home believing they’ll easily have sex with her while she’s unconscious, men like Adam Brody (The OC) and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Kick-Ass 2), who seem nice but who are, in essence, ready to rape her. It will be a shocking surprise for them when the woman who seemed to be so drunk she could barely walk is, in fact, totally sober and simply waiting for the right time to act. Fennell creates a character who has been through so much pain and trauma that seems unable to have a normal life, incapable of maintaining a relationship with Bo Burnham, her only love interest, or incapable of communicating with her mother, Jennifer Coolidge (The White Lotus); and yet, in an instant we identify with her quest for justice, and her intricate plan to confront those who committed heinous crimes of sexual abuse back when she was a student, as well as those who were accomplices. Fennell creates a compelling, brutally intense and yet realistic portrayal of what vengeance might look like without resorting to guns, torture or physical strength, after all, as the director expressed, in real life a woman can’t physically overpower abusive men, but she can definitely outthink them. Promising Young Woman is full of suspense and emotional pain; by far one of the best films from 2020.

Many critics have compared Saltburn with Anthony Minghella’s The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith. I can definitely see the similarities. Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting) is a smart and talented young man who has the uncanny ability to impersonate other people. Thanks to that, he’s sent to Italy to retrieve Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows), the son and only heir of an American millionaire. In Italy, the protagonist pretends to be a Princeton student and soon befriends the rich kid, who is always interested in making new friends. As I wrote before, “Jude Law is the golden boy everybody loves, and that includes not only Gwyneth Paltrow (Hard Eight) and Phillip Seymour Hoffman but also the protagonist. Matt Damon quickly falls in love with this lighthearted guy, but jealousy and resentment will force him to commit a terrible crime”. The two young men spend an awful amount of time together and become intimate friends, to the point that the protagonist makes the mistake of thinking he can seduce his friend. A filmic masterpiece, The Talented Mr. Ripley explores the darkest corners of the human mind, while emphasizing the real danger of unbridled greediness and a desperate need for fitting in. Nightmarish in some ways, haunting and painfully beautiful in others, Minghella’s film is an unforgettable cautionary tale about the peril of sacrificing our true identity to become something we’re not.

Time’s but a veiled screen, whereon our silhouettes fatten then grow lean. Another year has come and gone in this on-line journal and that indubitably calls forth a proper measure of our cinematographic experiences. Now let us be about our grudging rounds. Speak well, oh reader, and listen even better, for we have enough wit yet left to surprise thee. It is proposed we should find positions for all motion pictures presented in the course of 2023, and with an agile mind and knowledge both of directors and actors, we trust thou shalt count our judgment amongst the very best. Thus must we testify... sufficient in our intimate thoughts that these estimations spilled delinquent out of our mouths are indeed of the noblest disposition.

Como es habitual, el reparto incluye una auténtica legión de actores famosos, como Jeffrey Wright (The French Dispatch), Liev Schreiber, Steve Carell (Beautiful Boy), Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk About Kevin) y Willem Dafoe (4:44 Last Day on Earth).

In June I traveled to Peru and visited Machu Picchu for the third time. Keeping in mind that it was Pride month I watched a few interesting LGBT productions: Let’s start with Peridot (2022), a very special project written, directed and starred by Shayne Pax, who plays a young man who tries to make a living by prostituting himself with older men and women. When everything is a transaction and there is no future to look forward to, the protagonist struggles to survive, until he randomly meets a woman that will become his best friend. The older lady and the young gigolo are unlikely allies in a cruel world, and yet, they provide each other with the emotional connection they so desperately need. Pax does a magnificent job highlighting the pain of loneliness and the joy that comes from connecting, even if only platonically, with someone else.

Departure (2015), written and directed by Andrew Steggall, is a touching coming of age film that revolves around Alex Lawther, a teenager who accompanies his mother as she’s trying to sell their summer house in France, after a complicated divorce. The boy spends most of his time masturbating and fantasizing about the possibility of his first gay sexual experience, until he meets Phénix Brossard, a local French teen who quickly becomes his friend. However, what starts as friendship soon evolves into an intense erotic relationship. Steggall manages to evoke the awkwardness and insecurity of adolescence, as well as the subtleties of romantic relationships at that age. The peaceful and idyllic setting is a good contrast for the inner turmoil of the main characters.

Akron (2015), directed by Sasha King & Brian O'Donnell, focuses on the lives of Matthew Frias and Edmund Donovan, two college freshmen who meet and fall in love. They’re both openly gay, they’re good students and count with the support of their parents. Nothing seems to stand in their way, until they start spending time with each other’s families and accidentally uncover a very tragic past that threatens to separate them. I think it was interesting to watch a movie in which the homosexuality of the characters is never a problem, however, love always has obstacles.

Chris Mason Johnson’s Test (2013) is a fascinating take on the lives of gay men in San Francisco, in the 80s, in the middle of the AIDS epidemic. Scott Marlowe is an attractive ballet dancer who enjoys having multiple sexual encounters with random men, until a strange disease starts taking the lives of his friends. Slowly but surely, the protagonist becomes afraid of that which had always been his main source of pleasure: sex with other men. Finally, the time has come to take a test that will determine if he has been infected or not. The director shows us all the tension, all the sadness and concerns, but also all the sensuality and the necessity to fight for life.

Happy New Year! We can celebrate the beginning of 2023 combining December films with the Best of 2022 List. So let’s start with one of the best films of the year, directed by Luca Guadagnino: Bones and All (2022), a unique exploration of horror and alienated youth during the Ronald Reagan era. Based on the novel by Camille DeAngelis, the story begins with Taylor Russell, a high school student who has an unquenchable hunger for human flesh. Her father knows that she has these urges and as soon as she attacks someone, they move somewhere else. When she turns 18, her father abandons her, leaving a tape in which he reflects on her constant need to feed on other humans. Intent on reaching Minnesota, the girl ends up meeting other individuals who, like her, are cannibals, or eaters, as they prefer to call themselves, they can sense each other even from miles away, and they all understand that it doesn’t matter if they want to or not, eventually they must eat people so that they can keep on living. When she meets Timothée Chalamet (famous for his role as a gay teenager in Call Me By Your Name), a young man who is also an eater, they decide to travel together. A strong friendship develops between them. Back at home, Timothée Chalamet was scorned for not being masculine enough, in a scene we see how he is masturbated by a handsome young man and at the moment of the climax, he kills his victim and starts devouring his flesh. Taylor joins for the feeding, respecting his friend’s unique sexuality while developing a romantic connection. Bones and All is an extraordinary allegory for homosexuality and the feeling of estrangement and loneliness experienced by young people. We see the way these eaters are ignored by others, how they can blend in and live a seemingly normal life until their urges go out of control. Guadagnino creates a captivating atmosphere, rich in suspense, in fear, but also full of tenderness and elements that question the very nature of society. Fear and love can be universal, and they come together in these marginal but fascinating lives.

Written and directed by David O. Russell, Amsterdam (2022) is based on real-life events. Christian Bale (American Hustle) is a doctor who joined the military and fought in WWI, after being injured, he finds shelter in Amsterdam, where he recovers along his best friend and soldier John David Washington, together with nurse Margot Robbie (Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood) they live the time of their lives and find joy in a unique form of intimacy. After the protagonist returns to the US, he’s ostracized by the medical board and has to open a somewhat clandestine office where he takes care of war veterans. In 1933, Taylor Swift, hours before being murdered, asks him to perform an autopsy on his father, a general that the protagonist revered; the general was poisoned. Soon, the characters discover a widespread conspiracy involving some of America’s wealthiest men, who wanted to overthrow the government and embrace a dictatorship, much like Italy and Germany at the time. The all-star cast includes Chris Rock, Michael Shannon (Take Shelter), Mike Myers, Robert De Niro (Goodfellas), Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Rami Malek (The Little Things). I absolutely enjoyed Amsterdam; it perfectly combines irony, black humor and historical facts, in a way that turn this into a must see.

Jim O'Hanlon’s Your Christmas or Mine? (2022) is a refreshing romantic comedy in which Asa Butterfield (The Space Between Us) and his girlfriend Cora Kirk try to surprise each other by visiting their hometowns to spend Christmas together. However, Asa ends up in the girl’s house surrounded by extravagant relatives, including an absentminded grandma and an older aunt who tries to seduce him, while Cora ends up in the estate of the earl of Gloucester, who is her boyfriend’s father. Due to a heavy snowstorm, they’re both forced to spend the next couple of days staying with people they just met, but in the process they learn a lot about the other’s past, family and secrets. There are many hilarious moments, and I was laughing out loud constantly. All the delicious quirkiness of British people, from nobles to commoners, are portrayed here with an excellent sense of humor.

Luca Guadagnino directs Suspiria (2018), based on Dario Argento’s production from 1977. In a very strict and demanding dance company, strange events start occurring, such as the disappearance of the lead dancer Chloë Grace Moretz (The 5th Wave). It’s in this context that Dakota Johnson joins the company and very quickly impresses Tilda Swinton (Burn After Reading), who is charge of producing a new experimental ballet. As the protagonist moves into the macabre building where all the other dancers live, she starts suspecting that something is not quite right there, suspicious fueled by an old psychoanalyst who persists in trying to find the disappeared girl. A true master of horror, Guadagnino creates some unforgettable scenes, there is constant tension and a unique buildup up to a moment of revelation, unlike anything else seen in contemporary cinema. Top notch performances, haunting locations and a riveting script, turn this into one of the best films of 2018. Recommend for all horror fans.

As I’ve said before, 20 years ago Darren Aronofsky had more potential than any other filmmaker but slowly the quality of his work started to decline. Mother! (2017) was absolutely disappointing. This allegorical reinterpretation of the bible (in which nothing will ever make sense unless you’re seeing it through a religious point of view) Aronofsky does what I would have thought impossible before: he let us all down. To add insult to injury, Aronofsky’s plot is so stupid this movie can’t even be saved by its amazing cast: Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games), Javier Bardem (Love in the Time of Cholera), Ed Harris (That’s What I Am), Michelle Pfeiffer (French Exit) and Domhnall Gleeson (About Time).

For 6 years in a row now, Timothée Chalamet has proved to be the best actor of his generation and someone wise enough to choose the best films year after year: Call Me By Your Name (2017), Beautiful Boy (2018), The King (2019), The French Dispatch (2020) and Dune (2021). Julia Hart’s Miss Stevens (2016) is “an unexpected gem”, a film that is tremendously honest and heartbreaking. In a way it’s a coming of age story but it’s also an insightful reflection on adulthood and loneliness. Lily Rabe is a high school teacher who lives a quiet, sad and lonely life, until due to unexpected circumstances she must be the chaperone for 3 of her students who must travel to attend an acting competition. One of the students is Timothée Chalamet (Don’t Look Up), a brilliant and charismatic teenager who seems to have a traumatic past and is now under medication. During the trip, it becomes obvious that he is attracted to the teacher and she starts lowering her barriers, forgetting at times that she is the only adult and therefore the only one with real responsibilities. The teenager is capable of making her laugh, his youthful charm and energy are enough to make her feel alive again, and yet she knows there is a barrier she can’t cross. In just a weekend we see how difficult life can be for teenagers still trying to figure out what to do with their lives and their futures, but we also see how incredibly complicated life can be as an adult, once you have a career, a house, a semblance of stability and yet you can barely survive a crashing sense of solitude, which is made worse by the feeling that what you’re doing on a daily basis is worthless. Hart creates enthralling, complex characters, full of flaws and yet full of potential. Nothing is out of place here, everything comes together in terms of narrative, and the performances are absolutely astonishing. A true masterwork that everyone should watch; and hands down one of the best films of 2016.

It is proposed we should find positions for all motion pictures presented in the course of 2022, and with an agile mind and knowledge both of directors and actors, we trust thou shalt count our judgment amongst the very best. Thus must we testify... sufficient in our intimate thoughts that these estimations spilled delinquent out of our mouths are indeed of the noblest disposition.

El elenco estelar incluye a Chris Rock, Michael Shannon (Take Shelter), Mike Myers, Robert De Niro (Goodfellas), Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy) y Rami Malek (The Little Things).

Your Christmas or Mine?

Para colmo de males, la trama de Aronofsky es tan estúpida que ni siquiera el asombroso elenco puede salvar esta película: Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games), Javier Bardem (Love in the Time of Cholera), Ed Harris (That’s What I Am), Michelle Pfeiffer (French Exit) y Domhnall Gleeson (About Time).
