June comic books / cómics de junio

The comic books I enjoyed the most this month came from DC Comics, the last time something like this happened was probably more than 10 years ago. My favorite comic book of the month was The Nice House on the Lake, a horror story that takes place in Wisconsin, and I’d say this one is almost a tie with the always magnificent Strange Adventures. Legends of the Dark Knight, The Marvels and Proctor Valley Road continue to be good.  The first issues of Jupiter’s Legacy Requiem was interesting, and the first issue of The Blue Flame (superheroes in Wisconsin) was quite promising. And of course I’m absolutely happy with the 3rd volume of Byrne’s Superman. And now, without further ado, here are June comics as per solicitations.

BLUE FLAME #1
(W) Christopher Cantwell (A/CA) Adam Gorham. THE BLUE FLAME is a cosmic hero. The Blue Flame is a DIY vigilante that fights crime on the streets of Milwaukee. The Blue Flame is a blue collar HVAC repairman named SAM BRAUSAM. In the wake of a horrific tragedy, the boundaries of the Blue Flame's identity blur even further. Now, before a universal trial, the Blue Flame must prove that humanity is worth saving. But in order to do that, Sam Brausam has to save himself. Can he?

JUPITERS LEGACY REQUIEM #1
(W) Mark Millar (A) Tommy Lee Edwards (CA) Frank Quitely. SPECIAL DOUBLE-SIZED ISSUE! The next chapter in 2021's Netflix global phenomenon begins here as MARK MILLAR returns for the sequel to one of his most critically acclaimed series. Chloe and Hutch have gotten married and had more children. The superheroes are working in harmony with humanity and creating a perfect world. But all is not well in the Garden of Eden as the Sampson family gets ripped apart and the secrets of the Netflix show's mysterious island begin to be revealed. Order big, as this will be a juggernaut!

LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT #2
(W/A/CA) Darick Robertson.  The Joker has been poisoned. Batman has a choice to make: Does he let his ultimate enemy live or die? The perfect riddle for The Riddler to sink his teeth into! Batman receives a sinister clue that leads him into a new death trap, but...it looks like a new quizzical force might be at work in Gotham City looking to undermine Batman and get their hands on the toxins every villain in the city is fighting over!

PROCTOR VALLEY ROAD #4
(W) Alex Child, Grant Morrison (A/CA) Naomi Franquiz. * Plagued by day terrors and visions of a drenched woman, the girls search for answers about Proctor Valley Road at another haunted spot, the abandoned Haven Bakery. * Their inquiries into the spirit world will lead them to the local tribal reservation, but not before Rylee and August's feelings for the same boy threaten to tear the group apart…

SPACE BASTARDS #6
(W) Joe Aubrey, Eric Peterson (A/CA) Simon Bisley. They say that an alcoholic ends up in one of three places: dead, sober, or in jail. Learn how your new favorite bastard, Chuck 'The Magic' Wagon carved his own path in the IPS, as well as what it cost him. A surreal, sci-fi yarn brought to you by one of the most unique talents in comics history.

STRANGE ADVENTURES #10
(W) Tom King (A) Mitch Gerads, Evan Doc Shaner (CA) Evan Doc Shaner. Once upon a time on Rann, Adam Strange made a deal with his neighbors and foes to take a stand against the invading Pykkts. Now, on Earth, he is trying to do the same thing: to get all the heroes to rise as one to keep the marauders from doing to his home planet what they already did to his adopted one. But the original deal was a devil’s bargain, and Alanna Strange has received a mysterious letter that may tell her more than she wants to know. If she wants to keep her husband safe, it’s time for her to go on the offensive.

THE NICE HOUSE ON THE LAKE #1
(W) James Tynion IV (A) Álvaro Martínez Bueno. It all begins with the nice house on the lake… Everyone who was invited to the house knows Walter—well, they know him a little, anyway. Some met him in childhood; some met him months ago. And Walter’s always been a little…off. But after the hardest year of their lives, nobody was going to turn down Walter’s invitation to an astonishingly beautiful house in the woods, overlooking an enormous sylvan lake. It’s beautiful, it’s opulent, it’s private—so a week of putting up with Walter’s weird little schemes and nicknames in exchange for the vacation of a lifetime? Why not? All of them were at that moment in their lives when they could feel themselves pulling away from their other friends; wouldn’t a chance to reconnect be…nice? Wouldn’t an escape from the horrors of their everyday lives be…idyllic? Would you accept this invitation from one of your oldest friends?  ________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Legends of the Dark Knight, The Marvels y Proctor Valley Road siguen siendo buenos.

LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT #2

SUPERMAN THE MAN OF STEEL VOL 3 HC
Este volumen recopila Superman # 12-15, Adventures of Superman # 436-438, Action Comics # 594-597, Superman: The Earth Stealers # 1, Action Comics Annual # 1, Superman Annual # 1, Adventures of Superman Annual # 1, y Booster Gold # 23.

THE MARVELS #2
El Castigador. La Gato Negra. Melinda May.

THE NICE HOUSE ON THE LAKE #1

On Sunday, because of the coronavirus situation, all bars and clubs were closed here in California, all restaurants switched to take out or delivery only, Monday they announced a complete lockdown in 6 counties in the Bay Area. I was freaking out because I knew they would have a lockdown and shelter in place procedure in Davis, where I live. Most shelves are empty in the supermarkets. So, of course, for the past few days I’ve been thinking if it’s necessary or not to keep posting as usual. In the end, of course, is not a question of what is necessary but rather a question of what will make me, and you and all of us feel as if we still had a normal routine to cling to. So let’s talk about comics for a bit. I was pleasantly surprised by the first issue of Alienated, the conclusion of Conan and American Gods was quite good. I enjoyed reading The Dollhouse and Legion of Super-Heroes but my favorite comic of the month was Marvels X #2. And now, without further ado, here are February comics as per solicitations:

ALIENATED #1
(W) Simon Spurrier (A/CA) Chris Wildgoose. Acclaimed writer Simon Spurrier (John Constantine Hellblazer, Coda) and artist Chris Wildgoose (Batgirl, Batman: Nightwalker) present a subversive coming-of-age story about about having all the power to change the world but the unready hands to truly wield it. Three teenagers, each an outcast in their own way, stumble upon an unearthly entity as it's born. As they bond over this shared secret and the creature's incredible abilities, it becomes clear to the teenagers that their cute little pet is a super-predator in the making - and it's in need of prey. Guided by the best intentions at first, the teens' decisions soon become corrupted by adolescent desires, small town jealousies, and internal rivalries, sending them into a catastrophic spiral of their own making.

AMERICAN GODS #9
(W) Neil Gaiman (A) P. Craig Russell & Various (CA) Glenn Fabry. In this dramatic conclusion to the award-winning American Gods series, Shadow says his goodbyes and makes peace with a world that has changed forever.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #12

DOLLHOUSE #4
(W) Mike Carey (A) Peter Gross, Vince Locke (CA) Jay Anacleto. Alice's worst nightmare has come true: the Dollhouse has returned…and if it can't have her, it'll settle for her daughter! And as horrible as her prior experiences with the House have been, they're nothing compared to what it's been able to come up with after 20 years of waiting…

LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #4
(W) Brian Michael Bendis (A/CA) Ryan Sook, Travis Moore. The secret origin of the Legion of Super-Heroes revealed! Exactly how did this ragtag group of idealistic, super-powered teens from all across the galaxy find each other? What pulls them and keeps them together? Another gorgeous issue of DC's future superstars also reveals clues to how Aquaman's lost trident may be the key to Earth's future and survival!

MARVELS X #2
(W) Alex Ross, Jim Krueger (A) Well-Bee (CA) Alex Ross. David's arrival in New York doesn't bring the safety he had hoped it would. And while he does indeed find some heroes, he also finds that they don't know what to do in a world where everyone they ever fought to protect now wants only to blame them for the hell the world has transformed into. Alex Ross, Jim Krueger and Well-Bee continue the amazing prequel to the EARTH X trilogy. Rated T

X-MEN/FANTASTIC FOUR #1

(W) Chip Zdarsky (A/CA) Terry Dodson. KRAKOA. Every mutant on Earth lives there … except for one. But now it's time for FRANKLIN RICHARDS to come home. It's the X-MEN VS. the FANTASTIC FOUR and nothing will ever be the same. Rated T+

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #12

LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #4

X-MEN/FANTASTIC FOUR #1

I got a dozen of wonderful comics in July. There were a few first issues that I found fascinating: Waid’s Strange Fruit (good story and impressive art), Vaughan’s We Stand On Guard (which deserves its own review) and Gillen’s Mercury Heat (smart sci-fi plus lots of action scenes). Garth Ennis continues to crack me up with his All Star Section 8, it’s just so much fun. And Airboy also made me laugh out loud, amazing mini by James Robinson. It’s safe to say that in July, the best books come from Avatar, in fact, my favorite comic of the month is Moore’s Providence # 2. 'This is not a Lord of the Rings or a Star Wars where the good guys win because they are right. The good guys in 18 Days are forced to cheat and lie and break rules to win. Although it has fantastic, mythic trappings, this is a very modern story of realpolitik and the failure of ideals in the face of harsh truth.' - Grant Morrison. STRANGE FRUIT #1
(W) Mark Waid (A) J. G. Jones. What's to Love: Two of the industry's most respected and prolific creators come together for the first time in a deeply personal passion project. J.G. Jones (52, Wanted, Y: The Last Man) and Mark Waid (Irredeemable, Superman: Birthright, Kingdom Come) take on a powerful, beautifully painted story set during the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. Strange Fruit is a challenging, provocative examination of the heroic myth confronting the themes of racism, cultural legacy, and human nature through a literary lens, John Steinbeck's classic novel, Of Mice and Men. What It Is: It's 1927 in the town of Chatterlee, Mississippi, drowned by heavy rains. The Mississippi River is rising, threatening to break open not only the levees, but also the racial and social divisions of this former plantation town. A fiery messenger from the skies heralds the appearance of a being, one that will rip open the tensions in Chatterlee. Savior, or threat? It depends on where you stand. All the while, the waters are still rapidly rising…

AIRBOY #2 (of 4) (MR)
(W) James Robinson (A) Greg Hinkle.

ALL STAR SECTION 8 #2 (of 6)

JUPITER'S CIRCLE #4
(W) Mark Millar (A) Wilfredo Torres (CA) Frank Quitely.

MERCURY HEAT #1

PROVIDENCE #2 (of 12) (MR)

SECRET WARS #1
(W) Jonathan Hickman (A) Esad Ribic (CA) Alex Ross.

SILVER SURFER #9
Y no habrá vuelta atrás. El duelo definitivo: SILVER SURFER versus GALACTUS.

STRANGE FRUIT #1

WE STAND ON GUARD #1

There were only 9 comics for me this month. But the good thing is that most of them were absolutely great. Garth Ennis and his All Star Section 8 is the funniest comic I’ve read in 2015, I literally couldn’t stop laughing when I was reading it. On a similar vein, Airboy was also hilarious, and much better than what was expected. And my favorite comic of the month is Crossed Plus Hundred # 5. And now, without further ado, here are June comics as per solicitations.

AIRBOY #1 (of 4) (MR)
Worlds and minds explode in a brand-new series! When acclaimed comics author JAMES ROBINSON (Starman, Fantastic Four) is hired to write a reboot of the 1940s action hero Airboy, he's reluctant to do yet another Golden Age reboot. Just what the hell has happened to his career-?! His marriage?! His life?! Hey, it's nothing that a drink can't fix. It's after one such night of debauchery with artist GREG HINKLE that the project really comes into its own. Quite literally. Because Airboy himself appears to set the two depraved comic book creators on the straight and narrow. But is the task too much for our hero?

ALL-STAR SECTION 8 #1 (of 6)
(W) Garth Ennis (A) John McCrea. The greatest super heroes of all time, unseen since the end of the hit series HITMAN, have returned for the greatest super hero story ever told! Befuddled hero Sixpack returns to Gotham City, desperate to rebuild the all-star team known as Section Eight in the face of a deadly threat. He gathers old friends Bueno Excellente, Baytor and the seemingly reborn Dogwelder, along with some new faces - but he still needs that elusive eighth member. And that's when the Dark Knight Detective gets an offer he can't refuse in part one of this unforgettable six-issue miniseries.

AUTUMNLANDS TOOTH & CLAW #6
(W) Kurt Busiek (A/CA) Ben Dewey. The (literally) shattering showdown with the Bison Tribes that tears all alliances apart and sends the series in a whole new direction. Finale of the hit series' first arc!

CHRONONAUTS #4 (MR)
(W) Mark Millar (A/CA) Sean Murphy. MINISERIES CONCLUSION Captured by enemies and robbed of their ability to time travel, Danny and Quinn have created the biggest mess the space-time continuum has ever seen. Now, it's up to them to defeat the bad guys, fix past wrongs, and escape the wrath of their bosses! The finale to this sci-fi buddy adventure features MORE breathtaking Sean Murphy art-with MORE soldiers, MORE dinosaurs, and a conclusion to leave you clamoring for a sequel!

CROSSED PLUS 100 #5 AMERICAN HISTORY X WRAP CVR (MR)
(W) Alan Moore (A/CA) Gabriel Andrade. Future Taylor discovers the shocking truth about the Crossed infection and their evolution. The impossible has occurred and the future holds an ominous and seemingly unstoppable horror from taking root. Alan Moore, the man who revolutionized the comics medium, returns to monthly comics and puts his unique stamp upon the Crossed universe, as he and artist Gabriel Andrade paint a vivid picture of the future 100 years after the outbreak! This multi-layered story delivers a new brand of horror to Crossed fans at the hands of the scribe that redefined the comics medium. All the covers for the series have been planned out by Alan Moore, with the images enriching and expanding on the series. Clues and glimpses of what came before, and what might be, are found throughout the variant covers. Available with Regular, American History X Wraparound, Crossed Culture, Future Tense, as well as Retailer Incentive covers of Red Crossed and Design Sketch. Also, the New World Order Wraparound (Bagged for your safety). Due to all these special protective measures this edition is strictly limited to initial orders. Don't miss out on the ultra-rare CGC Numbered Edition as well!

JUPITER'S CIRCLE #3 (MR)
(W) Mark Millar (A) Wilfredo Torres (CA) Frank Quitely. Fitz Fenton is part of America's greatest super-team. When he meets a sweet small-town girl on one of his missions, sparks fly-but at what cost? With his family back home and his teammates to contend with, Fitz must choose between a promising new life and the respect of those he holds dear.

NAMELESS #4 (MR)
(W) Grant Morrison (A/CA) Chris Burnham. The world descends into chaos and the astronauts stranded in the Tunnels of Xibalba must endure unspeakable tortures when their captors finally reveal themselves. As all human hopes, fears, doubts, and dreams are subjected to the cruel and merciless scrutiny of an inhuman, sadistic intelligence, is reality collapsing? Or sanity?

STAR WARS #6
(W) Jason Aaron (A/CA) John Cassaday. • Luke vs. Boba Fett! Han Solo in hot water! • This is 'the comic book you're looking for!' - Comic Book Resources Rated T Star Wars © Lucasfilm Ltd. & TM. All rights reserved. Used under authorization. Text and illustrations for Star Wars are © 2015 Lucasfilm Ltd.

THE WICKED + THE DIVINE #11 (MR)
(W) Kieron Gillen (A/CA) Jamie McKelvie, Matthew Wilson. The end of Fandemonium. The end of Ragnarock. The end of the arc. The start of something else. Everything's going to be okay.

________________________________________________________________________________________________

AIRBOY #1 (of 4) (MR)

ALL STAR SECTION 8 #1 (of 6)

STAR WARS #6
¡Luke versus BOBA FETT! ¡Han Solo en peligro! • STAR WARS © 2015 LUCASFILM Ltd. & TM. Todos los derechos reservados.

THE WICKED + THE DIVINE #11 (MR)
Es el final de Fan-demonio. El final del RAGNAROCK.

May comic books / cómics de mayo

May is always one of my favorite months, and I think it is because I get free comics. I’m talking, of course, about Free Comic Book Day, and now, for third year in a row, my favorite was 2000AD, with 48 thrilling pages plus free digital comics, this certainly has been the most generous offering of the season. Another great FCBD title was Mercury Heat, I’ll certainly be reading the next issue in a month or so. And I loved Alex Ross cover for Secret Wars! Jupiter’s Circle continues to impress me, but perhaps the biggest surprise this time was All-New X-Men #40, an issue that made it into the headlines of every comic news website, the reason? Bobby Drake, AKA Iceman, founding member of the X-Men, admits that he’s gay, we owe this wonderful coming-out-of-the-closet issue to Brian Michael Bendis. Finally, the best issue of the month was Alan Moore’s Providence. And now, without further ado, here are May comics as per solicitations:

ALL-NEW X-MEN #40
BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS (W) MAHMUD ASRAR (A) ANDREA SORRENTINO (CA) Who are the Utopians? And what secret do they hold that pertains to the future of mutantkind? The All-New X-Men may regret finding out!

From ancient Rome to the roaring twenties to the 1980s music scene, Corbin and Danny-the world's first time travelers-continue to wreak havoc with the time-stream, and get into more hijinks with some of history's most notorious figures! When the director of the FBI threatens to reveal his secret, Richard is forced to make an impossible decision, all while his team battles to keep the world safe.

PROVIDENCE #1 (of 12) (MR)
(W) Alan Moore (A/CA) Jacen Burrows. The most important work of 2015 begins here with the long-awaited arrival of Alan Moore's breathtaking epic PROVIDENCE with his artistic partner Jacen Burrows. In his most carefully considered work in decades, Moore deconstructs all of Lovecraft's concepts, reinventing the entirety of his work inside a painstakingly researched framework of American history. Both sequel and prequel to NEONOMICON, PROVIDENCE begins in 1919 and blends the mythical visions of HPL flawlessly into the cauldron of racial and sexual intolerance that defined that era on the East Coast of America. Every line from artist Jacen Burrows is perfectly honed to complete this immersive experience. The result is a breathtaking masterpiece of sequential art that will define modern horror for this generation. Invoking a comparison it to a prior literary masterpiece is not something to be handled lightly, but in scope, importance and execution: Providence is the Watchmen of horror. Moore has designed every cover, every single page, and every nuance of this work to create his most fully-realized vision to date. There are no ads, all 32 pages are written by Moore, and Jacen Burrows has spent the past two years slaving over the finest detail possible on the pages. The entire work is already written, intricately crafted to tie the most nuanced threads together over the breadth of the series. Painstakingly researched, meticulously produced, this is a sequential masterpiece that will serve as important a call to the next generation of comic book writers as Watchmen did 30 years ago: this is a definitive demonstration of just how good a comic book can be. Available with Regular, Pantheon, Portrait, Dreamscape Wraparound, Women of HPL, and a special Ancient Tome Incentive cover, all by collaborator Jacen Burrows.

SANDMAN OVERTURE #5 (MR)
(W) Neil Gaiman (A/CA) J. H. Williams. The fate of the entire universe hangs in the balance when Dream finally gets his mother's full attention. STAR WARS #5

THE WICKED + THE DIVINE #10 (MR)
(W) Kieron Gillen (A/CA) Jamie McKelvie, Matthew Wilson. Ragnarock is finally here. The show to end all shows promises to be a lovely experience for all the gods... wait. Oh noes! Jamie and Matt have drawn Baphomet drenched in blood on the cover. What a hilarious internal communication error. I'm sure it's a mistake and nothing to do with the story whatsoever.

ALL-NEW X-MEN #40
¿Quiénes son los Utópicos? ¿Y cuál es su secreto?

FCBD 2015 LADY JUSTICE
El clásico perdido de Neil Gaiman.

FCBD 2015 LEGENDARY COMICS SAMPLER

PROVIDENCE #1 (of 12) (MR)

THE WICKED + THE DIVINE #10
