May Films / películas de mayo

May sure was a busy month for me but at least I did manage to go to the cinema. Anthony Russo and Joe Russo return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Captain America: Civil War (2016), one of the most entertaining blockbusters of the year. The Russos manage to capture the essence of the Sentinel of Liberty while rescuing some of the main ideas behind Mark Millar’s Civil War, such as the ideological confrontation between Iron Man and Captain America. I enjoyed the script a lot, and I absolutely loved to see so many great actors here: Chris Evans (Captain America), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Paul Bettany (Vision), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man); and I also welcome wonderful new additions like Tom Holland (Spider-Man) and Daniel Brühl (Zemo).

Based on real life events, The Stanford Prison Experiment (2015) recreates the psychological investigation conducted by Dr. Philip Zimbardo. The idea was to randomly divide a group of male college students into guards and prisoners, and study their behavior during two weeks. However, in just a couple of days the ‘guards’ punish the ‘prisoners’ so viciously, that soon the whole project turns into an inhuman nightmare. Director Kyle Patrick Alvarez keeps up the suspense and at the same time fleshes out each character admirably. The cast includes many talented young actors, such as Ezra Miller (We Need to Talk About Kevin), Michael Angarano (Red State), Keir Gilchrist (It’s Kind of a Funny Story), Thomas Mann (Project X) and Tye Sheridan.

Stephen Cone writes and directs Henry Gamble's Birthday Party (2015), a fascinating coming of age tale and hands down one of the best films of 2015. Cole Doman is about to turn 17 years old, and he’s confused about his sexuality; he persuades his best friend Joe Keery to masturbate with him and this seemingly innocent act has serious consequences. In this strict Christian environment, sexual repression and the omnipresence of guilt turn the boy’s birthday into a tormented scenario instead of a celebration. Adults chastise their children for exposing their bodies or for following their natural instincts. As the tension increases, the adults find sins everywhere, from loving couples on television to the non-Christian radio station the kids want to listen to. There is a strong inner conflict in all the characters, as they struggle to embrace their beliefs while imposing the most severe rules on themselves. With a unique sensibility and an admirable subtlety, Stephen Cone delves deep into the minds of this group of people, creating an unforgettable collage of frustrated, insecure and unhappy individuals, who constantly try to convince themselves that they’ve been blessed. The cast also includes Tyler Ross (famous for his role as a gay teenager in The Wise Kids).

The Smell of Us (2014) has been, perhaps, Larry Clark’s most controversial film to date. The American filmmaker accepts the challenge of intimately exploring the private lives of a group of teenagers in Paris. These skater boys consume alcohol and drugs excessively, and to afford their favorite trendy clothes they decide to prostitute themselves. They don’t do it out of necessity, but rather out of boredom; their clients are rich old men who treat the kids like garbage. Some European critics consider this a hidden masterpiece, while others accuse Larry Clark of being a “crotch-whiffing, armpit-sniffing” pervert who seems to have crossed the line while filming some very provocative and explicit scenes with the protagonist Lukas Ionesco (who was still a teenager at the time of shooting and who has later stated how traumatic the whole experience was). The cast also includes Hugo Behar-Thinières and Michael Pitt.

Focus (2015) brings together Will Smith and Margot Robbie, professional scammers who are after a very juicy prize. The script is clever enough, and the fast-paced action sure works alright. However, there are a few unconvincing moments.

Doomsdays (2013) is a strange independent production dealing with a couple of misfits: Leo Fitzpatrick and Justin Rice. Taking advantage of the holidays, they break into empty houses and commit acts of vandalism and senseless destruction. There is something endearing about these lost and obsessed characters, and I think despite a few weak points, Doomsdays can still surprise us in more than one way.

Gus Van Sant’s Restless (2011) is a delightful and deeply evocative film that revolves around Henry Hopper, a depressed teenager who constantly shows up at funerals (always uninvited) and Mia Wasikowska, a brave and extravagant girl diagnosed with terminal cancer. When these two outcasts meet, they fall in love, knowing full well that their days as a couple are numbered. Van Sant understands perfectly the idiosyncrasy of adolescence, aptly portraying the fears and insecurities, but also the dreams and hopes of the protagonists.

Mark Rydell’s James Dean (2001) is a biopic about Hollywood’s most famous young idol. James Franco (The Interview) plays the rebel actor, and he does it quite well. Rydell timidly suggests Dean’s involvement in homosexual encounters, but in the end the main plot here is the actor’s ascension to fame. An interesting production.

I always enjoy watching short films, and I’m very satisfied with May’s selection: Tenho Local (2016) focuses on a Brazilian young man and his boyfriend, and in their audacious sexual fantasies. A good sense of humor, a lighthearted approach and a pinch of eroticism are what makes Tenho Local so special.

An Austrian teenager decides to come out of the closet in 12 Points (2015). Although the boy’s father is, supposedly, a tolerant man, he simply rejects his son when he finds out his sexual orientation. Although the beginning is dramatic, the outcome is quite optimistic. I liked it anyway.

Rémi Bigot’s Juillet électrique (2014) is an extraordinary depiction of friendship and budding sexuality. Nathan Bobet and Rémi Chaudière are 14 years old and they spend the summer together, doing the kind of goofy and stupid things that everyone does at that age. However, an innocent kiss may very well disrupt an otherwise peaceful summer. Bigot shares with us an insightful and poignant portrait of early adolescence. I really recommend it.

El reparto incluye a muchos actores jóvenes  talentosos, como Ezra Miller (We Need to Talk About Kevin), Michael Angarano (Red State), Keir Gilchrist (It’s Kind of a Funny Story), Thomas Mann (Project X) y Tye Sheridan.

My drawing (color version) / mi dibujo (versión a color)

Mitos - Dick Matena

Whenever I think of European comics, I immediately remember my favorite authors from Spain, France or Italy. At first glance, it would seem as if comics were limited to 3 countries. But obviously the ninth art has flourished throughout Europe, even if we are not familiar with what is being produced in certain places.

Netherlands, for instance, is the birthplace of Dick Matena, an author known for his “terribly primal, aggressive and sardonic wit that is sometimes very close to psychedelia”. This characteristic can also help us define “Myths”, an anthology of standalone tales inspired by pop idols and movie stars.
Not The Beatles... / No son los Beatles...

Matena's transgressive approach discards historical facts, completely reinventing these famous figures while taking them into hazy, surreal and dreamlike scenarios. Thus “A Life in one Day” describes how a boy is besieged by a murderer harlequin; in order to escape, he seeks refuge in a boy band. Time moves strangely, as in a dream, and the physical appearance of the characters are in constant flux. This resource allows the artist to compare the life of John Lennon and the threats that the protagonist must face. However, at the end of the day, this Lennon doppelgänger is killed by the harlequin.

In the "Dispensary of Saint James", sexual confusion and the androgynous body are quite relevant. The protagonist is a boy who, like the castrati of the 18th century, has been deprived of his manhood. Confused about his sexuality, he goes to a clandestine surgeon. This doctor drugs him and transforms him into a girl, more specifically, in an exact replica of Marilyn Monroe. The intention of the doctor is to prostitute him (her) and, in fact, just after the operation, a customer is already trying to rape this new Marilyn Monroe.

“Flesh or the secret life of Alfred H” revolves around an alternative version of Alfred Hitchcock. The filmmaker, in this story, is also a respected chef who kills (and cooks) the actresses that have worked with him. Matena pays homage to the master of horror, including at the same time some humorous elements to balance the suspense.
Right before the end / justo antes del final
"Rebel with a Cause", is a reference to Hollywood's young idol: James Dean. In a cruel and corrupted world, a naïve and kind boy is constantly a victim. Tired of being bullied, the kid decides that if he behaves like a bad boy, he'll get lucky. In the same way that James Dean had intimate encounters with both ladies and gentlemen, the protagonist of this story also feels attracted to men. He decides to rape a boy, but after this violent act he falls in love with his victim. In an unexpected plot twist, Matena reveals that the boy was actually a girl in disguise; surprised, the protagonist concludes that he could also love a girl, but she slaps him, insulting him for being a degenerate who seeks only traditional and carnal union between a male and a female.
What's Edgar Allan Poe doing there? / ¿Y qué está haciendo Edgar Allan Poe allí?

Dick Matena’s audacious script is full of irony and clever metafictional games. The clean and precise lines of the Dutch artist, combined with his ability to represent real prople in outlandish scenarios, give versatility to his style. A transgressive proposal that deserves our attention.

Being a good boy can be quite painful / ser un buen chico puede ser bastante doloroso
This "Rebel With Cause" humiliates an innocent boy / este "Rebelde con causa" humilla a un chico inocente

The Young Protectors: Engaging the Enemy - Alex Woolfson & Adam DeKraker

Some things come as a surprise, and others are easy to predict. In the publishing world, that which can be predicted is coveted the most. That’s why DC and Marvel are so keen on refurbishing old franchises and resurrecting crossovers and ‘mega-events’ that were popular many years or decades ago. Predictability is the goal, and the big two know that if they put out certain type of materials, then they will be able to gauge their sales accurately and efficiently.

As a writer and reader, I cannot feel comfortable with that system. It means that more often than not I run into some really bad comics, with terrible writing and awful drawings. So the alternative is to pay attention to indie comics but those never come with a “satisfaction guaranteed or money back” sticker…
Red Hot & Annihilator

Obviously, it’s hard to find good comics. It doesn’t matter if every month you run into 400 or 500 titles that seem exciting in the Previews catalog. Most of them just won’t live up to the hype. Fortunately, you can always try to find better alternatives in Kickstarter. For some, this crowdfunding page is the future of the comics industry, and for others it’s simply an endless source of new and promising material, waiting to be materialized.

I’m not using that word randomly. Because that’s what Kickstarter is all about: taking an idea, a concept, a proposal, and turning that into something real, palpable, material in the true sense of the word. Years ago, writer Alex Woolfson and artist Adam DeKraker decided to create a very special webcomic about a young superhero coming to terms with his sexuality (and falling in love with a supervillain thrice his age!). And it sure was a surprise hit. So much in fact that thousands of faithful readers demanded a printed edition of The Young Protectors, and that’s what originated the Kickstarter campaign. In order to finance the first trade paperback of The Young Protectors, the creators asked for 14,000 dollars. Now having some experience with crowdfunding I can confirm that it isn’t easy to get that kind of money (heck, sometimes even a thousand is quite a challenge). That’s why the final result was so impressive: 133,640 dollars were pledged by fans all over the world (myself included), turning The Young Protectors into one of the most successful comic projects ever created on Kickstarter or any other crowdfunding platform.
Who said dating was easy? / ¿quién dijo que las citas eran fáciles?
It certainly was a pleasant surprise but it was also an example of why comics should be an act of love (whether straight or gay). All comics should be a project of passion. I don’t think a creator forced to follow strict editorial guidelines will come up with anything memorable. I believe in creative freedom and it’s quite reassuring to see the magnificent results in initiatives like this one.
Annihilator saves Red Hot / Annihilator salva a Red Hot

“Growing up, superhero comics played a huge role in shaping who I would become […] And no doubt I was relating to what was a pretty potent metaphor for a gay kid: These characters knew they were special, but had to keep it a secret”, explains Adam DeKraker, an artist famous for his collaborations on titles such as Teen Titans, The Legion of Super-Heroes, Superboy and Smallville. Undoubtedly, after all those years of practice he now excels on illustrating the adventures of young heroes.

Adam’s art is absolutely delightful; in a single panel, he’s capable of conveying the naiveté and awkwardness of Red Hot and the Annihilator’s assertiveness, providing an insightful and intimate portrayal of every character, while at the same time blowing up the page with high octane action whenever it’s necessary. Furthermore, Adam really understands eroticism, he’s an expert in increasing the sexual tension between the characters, without being explicit about it. I’d dare say that there is nothing here that wouldn’t appear on an 80s issue of Teen Titans (let’s remember how George Pérez’s generous predilection towards beefcake and shirtless heroes made him even more popular back then…), and yet here it all works wonderfully.

A couple of days ago, I got a great surprise. I received the package that contained The Young Protectors trade paperback, plus a set of cards, stickers and even a bookmarker. Alex had decided to create a lot of additional rewards. I know it wasn’t easy and it certainly wasn’t quick. But the result is just awesome. The comic itself looks gorgeous, and I had so much fun with the cards and everything else. Was it worth the wait? Totally! And now that this book is already out, you should get it and read it ASAP. I really recommend it.

The Young Protectors are looking at porn /

The boys are impressed by the fan fic and yaoi pages /

April sure came with a lot of good surprised. For the first time in my life, I decided to buy a Marvel Omnibus, and I’m glad I did. Marvel Universe by John Byrne is an extraordinary edition that compiles the works of one of my favorite creators; there are over one thousand pages of Byrne art in here and each page is a true delight for me; I’m just thrilled to have this amazing hardcover in my possession. Millar did a satisfactory job with the final issue of Huck and the first issue of Empress. I really enjoyed Silver Surfer and Jupiter’s Circle. Bermejo’s new Suciders series was quite impressive. Providence continues to be one of the best miniseries and this particular issue has some really unforgettable moments. But the best issue of the month was The Fix # 1, I couldn’t stop laughing while reading this transgressive comic… can’t remember the last time I had so much fun with a first issue, which is why I’m giving Nick Spencer due credit for this awesome new series. And now, without further ado, here are April comics as per solicitations:

Civil War # 4-7 - Mark Millar & Steve McNiven

The nature of superheroes rests on some very specific foundations. A superhero is a man or a woman doing the right thing without asking for any sort of reward or compensation. A superhero is often a lonely figure (and most of the time an unmarried one…) focused on their altruistic goals. So obviously the idea of recruiting superheroes and make them follow the government’s orders is very unusual, and yet rich in storytelling possibilities.
Wonder Man, Mr. Fantastic, Tigra, Yellow Jacket, Wasp & Thor
We root for superheroes whenever they beat the hell out of villains. Nonetheless, when superheroes fight each other our perspective changes. And in one way or another, we manifest our preference for one of them instead of the other, basing our decisions solely on our instincts and feelings, and not necessarily on rational thinking. When Civil War came out, hundreds of fans complained about how Tony Stark had usurped the role of the ‘bad guy’. However, I think that Mark Millar managed to maintain a certain balance. If I had to reply the question that became so popular thanks to this saga, “whose side are you on?”, I would have had a hard time coming up with an answer. Both Captain America and Iron Man thought they were doing the right thing, in fact, they were sure of it. And their conviction was so strong that readers had many heated debates in online forums, defending the point of view of the protagonists of Civil War.
Green Goblin, Spider-Man, Venom & Bullseye
As the battle between the heroes goes on, things get out of control. Iron Man’s Machiavellian actions were hard to accept for some fans. The cybernetic replica of Thor and the prison for superheroes located in the Negative Zone are quite sinister plans, but they make sense if we remember that Stark is a recovering alcoholic intent on keeping everything under control, no matter the cost.
Hercules, Daredevil, Wiccan, Vision, Invisible Woman, Cloak, Captain America, Falco & Human Torch
A pivotal moment in Civil War # 4 (originally published in October 2006) is the death of Bill Foster (AKA Goliath), at the hands of the robotic Thor. That was a clever idea from the Scottish writer since having an android kill one of Captain America’s men diffuses responsibility; the consequence is still shocking, but none of the heroes supporting Iron Man can be accused of murder. And yet Iron Man starts losing support. Spider-Man realizes he’s made a mistake. And even the Fantastic Four, Marvel’s premier superhero family, starts falling apart. Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) pays attention only to his laboratory and his calculations, Ben Grimm decides to take a neutral stance and seeks shelter in Europe, and finally, Johnny Storm and his sister Susan Storm join the resistance.
Captain America versus Iron Man
Before abandoning her husband, Susan Storm writes him a letter. It’s a heartbreaking farewell, intimate, full of passion and completely true to the Invisible Woman’s essence: “I’m so ashamed of you right now, and ashamed of myself supporting your fascistic plans. I hate what I’ve become, and that’s why I’m joining Cap’s Secret Avengers team […] I’m doing this for the best of reasons and pray that your genius can resolve this thing before one side ends up slaughtering the other”. This separation is of vital importance if we remember that the Fantastic Four are the foundation of the Marvel Universe, and if they can no longer stand united, that is a bad omen. Meanwhile S.H.I.E.L.D. deploys a villain squad to hunt Spider-Man. Exhausted and outnumbered, Peter Parker is defeated, but luckily the Punisher saves his life.

Reed Richards starts having second thoughts about the superhuman conflict, and Millar portrays him as a vulnerable and fragile character that we can easily relate to. Even Yellow Jacket (Hank Pym), is feeling remorse. Nevertheless, too much has happened already, and used to win every battle with their fists, the heroes on both sides simply don’t know how to stop the fighting. One of my favorite sequences takes place in half a page, when Uatu, The Watcher, is talking with Doctor Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme. “With your great power, you could stop this quarrel with a gesture or a whisper”, affirms Uatu; and Stephen Strange replies “Precisely why I must remain above the fray. There is no right or wrong in this debate. It is simply a matter of perspective, and it is not my place to influence the evolution of the superhuman role”. Doctor Strange has been fastening and meditating for weeks, while his friends and colleagues are attacking each other.
The death of Goliath / la muerte de Goliath

In the final battle, Captain America defeats Iron Man, but he’s unable to strike the final blow. After realizing how much destruction the war has caused, Captain America lowers his indestructible shield and surrenders. An amnesty is offered to the rebel heroes, and Iron Man is appointed as the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. by president Bush himself. And the 50 States Initiative begins.

Steve McNiven’s covers are very expressive and full of life and movement. McNiven’s artwork is an elegant combination of fluid lines, dynamic composition and highly detailed images. I remember that when I first read Civil War I wasn’t familiar with McNiven, but needless to say, I became a fan right away. He had something special, he was able to combine light and darkness in a way that felt eerily fitting for this morally ambiguous story. The suffering of the characters was made real thanks to his pencils, and with the inks of Dexter Vines, John Dell and Tim Townsend everything looks even more spectacular.

Mark Millar’s proposal was so successful because he went as far as he could and turned Civil War into a complex ideological confrontation, a political metaphor and an indictment on real life laws like the Patriot Act, signed by president Bush. In previous works, Millar had criticized sometimes subtly and other times loudly, the Bush administration. And he wasn’t alone. Many Americans were worried about the loss of civil liberties. This isn’t the first comic series that reflects real problems as well as the social upheavals of its time, and it certainly won’t be the last.

I explained, in the beginning, how 2006 was the year in which I abandoned DC and joined the ranks of Marvel. Like the protagonists of Civil War, I was also forced to choose a side. All editorial orders were blindly obeyed at DC Comics, they were playing it safe, while Marvel was willing to think outside the box, doing an event that defied the expectations of their readership. Obviously, I did what Captain America would have done. I joined the resistance; and I remained a loyal fan (until Disney bought Marvel but, then again, that’s a story for another time).

Y sin embargo, Iron Man empieza a perder apoyo.
Hercules destroys the robotic Thor / Hercules destroza al Thor robótico

Hero against hero: the end of the Civil War / héroe contra héroe: el final de la guerra civil
Y no estaba solo.
