Old Man Logan

Wolverine is one of the most popular characters in the Marvel Universe and simultaneously the most important member of the X-Men. There have been many interesting stories about Logan, the mutant with adamantium claws, and one of the best ones is Old Man Logan, a remarkable saga created by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven. Wolverine is uno de los personajes más populares del Universo Marvel y al mismo tiempo el miembro más importante de los X-Men. Hay muchas historias interesantes sobre Logan, el mutante con las garras de adamantium, y una de las mejores es Old Man Logan, una impresionante saga creada por Mark Millar y Steve McNiven. February Films / Películas de febrero

I only had time to watch one movie in February, and that was El laberinto del fauno (2006), directed by Guillermo del Toro. I had originally seen it over 10 years ago, and I was fascinated by del Toro’s proposal. Combining the harsh reality of a Spain dominated by Franco with a world of fantasy is no easy task. And yet, the director convinces us that the power of magic and the innocence of a child can be enough to, at least, give hope to those who were fighting against the brutal soldiers that blindly obeyed the Spanish dictator. The cast includes such talented actors like Ivana Baquero (a young girl who loves to read fantasy books), Sergi López (a cruel officer and faithful follower of Franco) and Maribel Verdú (a brave woman who tries to help the rebels while working under the orders of Franco’s soldiers). Del Toro comes up with some truly powerful and unforgettable scenes. In the end, this is a story about the importance of disobedience, about the necessity to reflect before following someone else’s orders. Definitely a must see.

Sólo tuve tiempo de ver una película en febrero: El laberinto del fauno (2006), dirigida por Guillermo del Toro. La había visto hace más de 10 años, y quedé fascinado por la propuesta de del Toro. Combinar la dura realidad de una España dominada por Franco con un mundo de fantasía no es tarea fácil. Y sin embargo, el director nos convence de que el poder de la magia y la inocencia de una niña puede ser suficiente para, al menos, dar esperanza a quienes luchaban contra los brutales soldados que obedecían ciegamente al dictador español. El elenco incluye a actores tan talentosos como Ivana Baquero (una niña a quien le gusta leer libros de fantasía), Sergi López (un oficial cruel y fiel seguidor de Franco) y Maribel Verdú (una mujer valiente que trata de ayudar a los rebeldes a la vez que obedece a los soldados de Franco); Del Toro logra algunas escenas verdaderamente poderosas e inolvidables. Al final, se trata de una historia sobre la importancia de la desobediencia, sobre la necesidad de reflexionar antes de seguir órdenes. Realmente la recomiendo.

Silver Surfer: Citizen of Earth - Dan Slott & Mike Allred

In the 60s, Stan Lee revolutionized the comics industry with the creation of the Marvel Universe, and after the original first wave of superheroes, the author tried new and different approaches to the superhuman archetype. One of such experiments would be the pacifist and melancholic Silver Surfer, the former herald of Galactus. Silver Surfer was a reluctant hero, constantly brooding, hesitant, always aware of what he had lost: his beloved Shamballa Bal, a girl from planet Zenn-La.  

Silver Surfer was one of Stan Lee’s favorite creations, and yet in recent decades the herald of Galactus had been languishing in limbo. Many creative teams tried to update the character, but their attempts were infructuous. Luckily for us, Dan Slott and Mike Allred found the ideal formula to revitalize the Silver Surfer, and to make him relevant again. 

Relying on a good sense of humor and the most outlandish sci-fi concepts, Slott successfully relaunched the Silver Surfer. And, following Marvel’s usual procedures, after a couple of years the title would be renumbered. “Homecoming” (Silver Surfer # 1, March 2016) marks the beginning of a new era and a great jumping on point. This time a bizarre group of aliens are planning to steal Earth’s “greatest resource”. Unlike many other stories about invaders from outer space, this time the much sought-after resource is culture. Every novel, every film, every comic book and TV show is taken by the aliens, every form of cultural and artistic expression disappears. Now that’s an idea that I absolutely love, it’s original and insane at the same time, and it fits so well with the overall tone of this series. 

There are a lot of funny moments in “Things Change” (Silver Surfer # 2, April 2016) and several homages to Doctor Who. Just like it happens quite frequently in the British TV series, Silver Surfer has to make up his mind about what he feels for his current human companion (in this case Dawn Greenwood) and his former and first ally, Alicia Masters. The tension between the two women and Silver Surfer’s inner doubts are just -priceless. However, the most shocking moment comes with the arrival of Shalla Bal, Silver Surfer’s long-lost love. “I Stand With Earth!” (Silver Surfer # 3, June 2016) is “a tale of triumph and tragedy” that celebrates the 50th anniversary of Silver Surfer.

Homage to a Clockwork Orange and Doctor Who / Homenaje a Una naranja mecánica y Doctor Who

Slott pays homage to the classic Lee and Kirby comics, reuniting the characters and making them face an adversary that, in some ways, is just as dangerous as Galactus. A dogmatic Shalla Bal insists on eradicating Earth’s culture and turning our planet into a replica of Zenn-La. During Lee’s era, Silver Surfer was a brooding character, shunned by those he pretended to save. This time, however, he is doubly rejected by the Zenn-La attackers and also by the people of the Earth, blinded by the promises of a better life. There is a magnificent scene in which many men and women surrender to the charming Shalla Bal, and Silver Surfer exclaims “There is a price for perfection! We need adversity! To strive! To grow!”. Most people don’t understand that, but Alicia Masters does. As a blind artist, it’s precisely her lack of sight which allows her to be one of the best sculptors in the world. So she stands against Shalla Bal and her promises of cold and lifeless perfection.

Alicia Masters & Dawn Greenwood

“Homeworld” (Silver Surfer # 4, July 2016) is a very special issue, in which we see how much the heroes of Earth admire the former herald of Galactus. And at last, but certainly not least, “Citizen of Earth” (Silver Surfer # 5, September 2016) and “Understanding the Alien Heart” (Silver Surfer # 6, October 2016) are two magnificent anniversary issues. Here Slott highlights the nobility and humanity of Silver Surfer, an alien who is finally respected and admired by everyone on Earth.  

Shalla Bal

As usual, Mike Allred proves to be an amazing artist, able to combine a vintage sensibility with the most visually striking elements of pop art. In the hands of Allred, good comedy becomes an essential part of this comic, and thanks to the craziness and extravagance of these pages, Slott’s scripts become even more compelling and hilarious.

Uno de tales experimentos sería el pacifista y melancólico Silver Surfer, el antiguo heraldo de Galactus. Silver Surfer era un héroe reluctante, siempre inquieto, vacilante, siempre consciente de lo que había perdido: su amada Shamballa Bal, una chica del planeta Zenn-La.

Before the final battle / antes de la batalla final

Silver Surfer fue una de las creaciones favoritas de Stan Lee, y sin embargo en las últimas décadas el heraldo de Galactus había estado languideciendo en el limbo. Muchos equipos creativos trataron de actualizar al personaje, pero sus intentos fueron infructuosos. Afortunadamente para nosotros, Dan Slott y Mike Allred encontraron la fórmula ideal para revitalizar a Silver Surfer, y para hacerlo relevante de nuevo.

The Avengers

Con un buen sentido del humor y los conceptos más extravagantes de la ciencia-ficción, Slott relanzó con éxito a Silver Surfer. Y, siguiendo los procedimientos usuales de Marvel, después de un par de años el título sería renumerado. "Llegada a casa" (Silver Surfer # 1, marzo de 2016) marca el comienzo de una nueva era y es un gran punto de partida para nuevos lectores. Esta vez un extraño grupo de alienígenas está planeando robar el "mayor recurso" de la Tierra. A diferencia de muchas otras historias sobre invasores del espacio, esta vez el recurso más preciado es la cultura. Cada novela, cada película, cada cómic y programa de televisión es robado por los extraterrestres, cada forma de expresión cultural y artística desaparece. Esa es una idea que me encanta, es original y alocada al mismo tiempo, y encaja tan bien con el tono general de esta serie.

Heroes of the Earth / Héroes de la Tierra

Hay muchos momentos divertidos en "Las cosas cambian" (Silver Surfer # 2, abril de 2016) y varios homenajes a Doctor Who. Al igual que sucede con bastante frecuencia en la serie de televisión británica, Silver Surfer tiene que tomar una decisión sobre lo que siente por su actual compañera humana (en este caso Dawn Greenwood) y su antigua y primera aliada, Alicia Masters. La tensión entre las dos mujeres y las dudas internas de Silver Surfer llaman la atención. Sin embargo, el momento más impactante viene con la llegada de Shalla Bal, el amor perdido tiempo atrás. "Yo defiendo la Tierra" (Silver Surfer # 3, junio de 2016) es "un relato de triunfo y tragedia" que celebra el 50 aniversario de Silver Surfer.

Home is where the heart is... / El hogar es donde está el corazón

Slott rinde homenaje a los cómics clásicos de Lee y Kirby, reuniendo a los personajes y haciendo que se enfrenten a un adversario que, de alguna manera, es tan peligroso como Galactus. Una dogmática Shalla Bal insiste en erradicar la cultura de la Tierra y convertir a nuestro planeta en una réplica de Zenn-La. Durante la era de Lee, Silver Surfer era un personaje apesadumbrado, rechazado por aquellos a quienes pretendía salvar. Esta vez, sin embargo, es doblemente rechazado por los atacantes de Zenn-La y también por el pueblo de la Tierra, cegado por las promesas de una vida mejor. Hay una escena magnífica en la que muchos hombres y mujeres se rinden a la encantadora Shalla Bal, y Silver Surfer exclama: "¡Hay un precio por la perfección! ¡Necesitamos adversidad! ¡Para prosperar! ¡Para crecer!". La mayoría de la gente no entiende eso, pero Alicia Masters sí. Al ser una artista ciega, es precisamente la imposibilidad de ver lo que le permite ser una de las mejores escultoras del mundo. Así que ella se enfrenta contra Shalla Bal y sus promesas de una perfección fría y sin vida.

Silver Surfer & Spider-Man

"Mundo hogar" (Silver Surfer # 4, julio de 2016) es un número muy especial, en el que vemos lo mucho que los héroes de la Tierra admiran al antiguo heraldo de Galactus. Y por último, pero no menos importante, "Ciudadano de la Tierra" (Silver Surfer # 5, septiembre de 2016) y "Entendiendo el corazón alienígena" (Silver Surfer # 6, octubre de 2016) son dos magníficos números de aniversario. Aquí Slott destaca la nobleza y la humanidad de Silver Surfer, un extraterrestre que finalmente es respetado y admirado por todos en la Tierra.

Como de costumbre, Mike Allred demuestra ser un artista increíble, capaz de combinar una sensibilidad nostálgia con los elementos más llamativos del arte pop. En las manos de Allred, la buena comedia se convierte en una parte esencial de este cómic, y gracias a la locura y la extravagancia de estas páginas, los guiones de Slott se vuelven aún más atractivos e hilarantes.

January Comics / cómics de enero

I only read a handful of comics last month, but they were all good. Marvel’s new series are great, but my favorite issue of the month, and one of the best comics I’ve read in the past 12 months, is “Love is Love”, an extraordinary selection of short stories, all of them deeply touching and wonderfully crafted. Sólo leí un puñado de cómics el mes pasado, pero todos fueron buenos. Las nuevas colecciones de Marvel están estupendas, pero mi cómic favorito del mes, y uno de los mejores que he leído en los últimos 12 meses, es “Love is Love”, una extraordinaria selección de historias cortas, todas profundamente emotivas y maravillosamente elaboradas.
