2019 Comic Books: Arion's Achievement Awards

As the years go by, I sometimes wonder if a good way to save money would be to stop buying new comics altogether and just stick to the plethora of magnificent titles that were published years or decades ago. Of course, an instant after I think about limiting myself to back issues and trade paperbacks, I see a new series announced, a new concept by some of my favorite authors and I’m immediately interested in what’s to come. Hopefully, I’m still able to maintain a balance between new and classic comics (a balance that I have also tried to preserve here on the blog, by reviewing new and old material).

The fun, for me, begins even before I actually hold a comic book in my hands. It starts with a careful selection of those titles that seem to be promising. Most of the time, I’m right on target (although every now and then a few stinkers find their way into my pull list). My purpose here is to highlight works that I find especially inspiring. So, without further ado, I invite you all to the ninth annual edition of the AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards).

A comic book should always be a harmonic combination of narrative skills and great art. Without a good writer, the stories we read won’t hold any special meaning in our hearts. Instead of choosing one writer I’ve decided to include 3 on the list: Chip Zdarsky for his fascinating and touching scripts in the nostalgic and bittersweet series “Spider-Man: Life Story”, as well as his compelling writing for “Invaders”. Kieron Gillen for his absolutely groundbreaking “Die” and Brian Michael Bendis for his fun and engaging reinterpretation of the “Legion of Super-Heroes”.

Art is what turns comics into a superior form of narrative. Throughout the decades, pencilers and inkers have experimented with different styles and artistic approaches. But regardless of the year or the name of the artist, graphic quality has always been the most important component of the ninth art. 3 artists have exceled during the past 12 months, so it’s only fair to reward them appropriately: Darick Robertson for his extraordinary and detailed artwork in “Oliver”, Esad Ribic for his breathtakingly beautiful illustrations in “Conan the Barbarian: Exodus” and Kevin O’Neill for his multiplicity of styles in “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: The Tempest”.  

When buying a comic, the first thing I look at is the cover. The mission of the cover is to seduce the reader’s eyes. So it has to be attractive, it has to outshine all other covers, it has to persuade us to acquire the book. Drawing an eye-catching cover is no easy task. Luckily, there are artists that continue to amaze me with their output: Arthur Adams for his iconic covers in “Marvel Comics Presents”, Mike Del Mundo for his splendid covers in “Thor” and Raulo Caceres for his irreverent and delightful work in “Cinema Purgatorio”.

Some fans don’t pay attention to editors, but they work 24/7 to provide us with the best possible comics. In this case the award goes to Cory Sedlmeier (Marvel Comics) for putting together the superb hardcover edition of Conan the Barbarian: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus Vol. 1.  

As always, faithful to the rules of the AAA, I can only choose material originally published in 2019. So the distinction for Best Single Issue goes to Marvel Comics # 1000, a very special anniversary anthology that includes 80 different creative teams and a vast array of voices and styles that yet work perfectly together in unison thanks to Al Ewing’s guiding hand.

I know from the first issue that I was looking at something unique, and after the completion of the first arc I kept waiting for more. “Die” is the best ongoing series of the year. Kieron Gillen’s new series is an innovative take on RPG and fantasy, and it also happens to be the best title Image is publishing right now.

There have been many wonderful miniseries (“Oliver”, “King Thor” and “Legion of Super-Heroes: Millennium”) but the prize to best limited series goes to “Spider-Man: Life Story”. Chip Zdarsky has successfully recreated Spider-Man’s life, making him age in real time and confronting him with the crucial moments of each decade. 

There were so many promising new series in 2019 that I had a hard time making a selection. Titles as impressive as “Ignited”, “Legion of Super-Heroes” and “Planet of the Nerds” were in my list. However, in the end, I decided to choose “The Dollhouse Family” as the Best New Series. Mike Carey delivers a multilayered horror story that will surprise everyone.

I’ve said plenty of times that one of the best creative teams in comic book history were Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith on Conan the Barbarian. Windsor-Smith has always been one of the greatest artists in the industry. So I think it was about time to honor him with the edition of Conan the Barbarian: the Original Marvel Years Omnibus Vol. 1, by far the best archival collection / reprint of the year.

As much as I enjoy reading titles from Marvel and DC, I’m always on the lookout for new and more independent publishers. In 2019, Ahoy Comics proved that they’re serious about their role in the comic book scene, combining old and new talent and publishing fantastic titles such as “Planet of the Nerds”. So Ahoy Comics is the best publisher of the year.

In a year that saw the demise of some of the last comic-related webpages such as the TheOuthousers.com, it’s a sign of relief to see the wonderful work of TCJ.com, The Comics Journal continues to produce quality articles. I applaud the work of all the collaborators that put so much effort in The Comics Journal. Cheers to them!

“Ars longa, vita brevis” goes an old Latin saying. Art, indeed, can be everlasting even if our lives are not. In 2019 we say goodbye to several prominent creators: Ron Smith, a fantastic British artist that redefined the world of Mega City One as a co-creator of characters like Otto Sump and Chopper, frequent 2000 AD collaborator and also famous for his work on the Dredd daily strips, he was an artist that I always associated with Judge Dredd, but also an artist that I very much admired, there is simply no way I can forget how much I enjoyed the many stories illustrated by him. Tom Lyle was an artist that I immediately liked when I first saw his pages on a Robin story, mostly famous for his work on Batman and then Robin, but also Starman and Spider-Man, at 66, Lyle suffered an aneurysm; recently, comic book creators and fans donated over $25,000 to Lyle’s widow in order to cover some of the medical bills. I first discovered Ernie Colón’s vibrant art thanks to some Legion of Super-Heroes comics he did in the 80s, admired and respected by many, Colón was one of the first successful Puerto Rican artists in the comic book industry. Howard Cruse was one of the first pioneers in queer comix, and his Stuck Rubber Baby, published by DC Comics’ Paradox imprint in the 90s, is one of the most well-known LGBT graphic novels; Cruse may have lost his battle against cancer, but his legacy remains.

And thus 2019 cometh to an end. Speak, speak now, reader. If thou art not as unkind as a Vaudeville villain then, by all means, unsheathe thy tongue. Thou shall not be arrested by modestly discourse, come forth and pray tell us what is on thy mind lest you wish to incur in the wrath of the keeper of this tavern, ensconced in yonder and ethereal realms.

I bid thee farewell and long live the ninth art!

A medida que pasan los años, a veces me pregunto si una buena manera de ahorrar dinero sería dejar de comprar cómics nuevos y simplemente limitarme a la gran cantidad de títulos magníficos que se publicaron años o décadas atrás. Por supuesto, un instante después de pensar en quedarme sólo con ejemplares antiguos y tomos recopilatorios, veo una nueva serie anunciada, un nuevo concepto de algunos de mis autores favoritos y estoy inmediatamente interesado en lo que vendrá. Con suerte, todavía puedo mantener un equilibrio entre los cómics nuevos y clásicos (un equilibrio que también he tratado de preservar aquí en el blog, al revisar material nuevo y antiguo).

La diversión, para mí, comienza incluso antes de sujetar ese cómic en mis manos. Empieza con una selección cuidadosa de los títulos que parecen ser prometedores. La mayoría de las veces, doy en el blanco (aunque de vez en cuando algunos bodrios terminan colándose en mi lista). Mi propósito aquí es resaltar trabajos que encuentro especialmente inspiradores. Así que, sin más preámbulos, los invito a todos a la novena edición anual de los AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards).

Un cómic siempre debe ser una combinación armónica de habilidades narrativas y buen arte. Sin un buen escritor, las historias que leemos no tendrán ningún significado especial en nuestros corazones. En lugar de elegir un escritor he decidido incluir 3 en la lista: Chip Zdarsky por sus fascinantes y conmovedores guiones en la nostálgica y agridulce serie “Spider-Man: Life Story”, así como su atrayente escritura para “Invaders”. Kieron Gillen por su absolutemente innovador “Die” y Brian Michael Bendis por su divertida y dinámica reinterpretación de “Legion of Super-Heroes”.

El arte es lo que convierte a los cómics en una forma narrativa superior. A través de las décadas, los dibujantes han experimentado con diversos estilos y acercamientos artísticos. Pero independientemente del año o del nombre del artista, la calidad gráfica siempre ha sido el componente más importante del noveno arte. 3 artistas se han destacado durante los últimos 12 meses, por lo que es justo premiarlos adecuadamente: Darick Robertson for su extraordinario y detallado trabajo artístico en “Oliver”, Esad Ribic por sus ilustraciones se sobrecogedora belleza en “Conan the Barbarian: Exodus” y Kevin O’Neill por su multiplicidad de estilos en “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: The Tempest”.  

Al comprar un cómic, la primera cosa que miro es la portada. La misión de la portada es seducir los ojos del lector. Así que tiene que ser atractiva, tiene que eclipsar a todas las otras portadas, tiene que persuadirnos para adquirir ese cómic. Dibujar una portada llamativa no es tarea fácil. Afortunadamente, hay artistas que siguen sorprendiéndome: Arthur Adams por sus icónicas portadas en “Marvel Comics Presents”, Mike Del Mundo por sus espléndidas portadas en “Thor” y Raulo Caceres por su irreverente y delicioso trabajo en “Cinema Purgatorio”.

Algunos fans no prestan atención a los editores, pero trabajan las 24 horas del día para proporcionarnos los mejores cómics posibles. En este caso, el premio va a Cory Sedlmeier (Marvel Comics) por organizar la soberbia edición en tapa dura de Conan the Barbarian: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus Vol. 1. 


Como siempre, fiel a las reglas de los AAA, sólo puedo elegir el material publicado originalmente en el 2019. Así que la distinción de Mejor número único va para Marvel Comics # 1000, una muy especial antología de aniversario que incluye 80 equipos creativos diferentes y un vasto elenco de voces y estilos que trabajan perfectamente al unísono gracias a la guía de Al Ewing.

Desde el primer número, supe que estaba viendo algo único, y después de completar el primer arco seguí a la espera de más. “Die” es la mejor serie en curso del año. La nueva serie de Kieron Gillen es una visión innovadora del juego de rol y la fantasía, y también es el mejor título que Image está publicando en este momento.

Planetary # 25 - Warren Ellis & John Cassaday

“In From the Cold” (Planetary # 25, June 2006) begins with what seems to be a peaceful conversation between Elijah Snow and John Stone, the man who helped him recover his memory. John Stone, agent of S.T.O.R.M. had already appeared in “Cold World”, a reference to the Cold War and super-spies such as James Bond and Nick Fury, agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. And obviously, as a spy, John Stone isn’t 100% loyal to Planetary. Snow has come to the conclusion that Stone had been a double agent, conspiring with Randall Dowling for decades.

The confrontation is brutal, and after being captured, Stone is interrogated by the leader of Planetary. Snow already knows the powers and abilties of 3 of the members of the Four: William Leather has control over fire, Jacob Greene is a super strong and invulnerable rock monster, Kim Süskind has invisibility powers, but nobody knows what Randall Dowling’s powers are: “his mind stretches, and worms out, and lays eggs. And reproduces. Anyone who’s ever been within a hundred feet of Randall Dowling, Eijah… probably is Randall Dowling”. The idea of an evil Mr. Fantastic, smarter than everyone else on Earth is intimidating enough, and to make things more suspenseful, Dowling can effectively infect others and stretch his mind far away from the confines of his body, all these abilities make him a formidable enemy and one that cannot be easily defeated. 

In the same way that Fantastic Four # 1 tells the origin of Marvel’s premier superhero team, this issue also focuses on the interplanetary expedition that 4 adventurers embark upon. In Marvel comics, as was the rule at the time, an accident gives Reed Richards and his crew the fantastic powers they’ll use to protect mankind; Randall Dowling however has been thoroughly planning this expedition, with the unique goal of gaining superpowers so that they’ll be able to control humanity, to enslave and exterminate innocent people. The whole sequence in which the Four travel through the Multiverse is visually stunning.

At this point, Cassaday was illustrating basically 2 issues per year, instead of the usual one issue per month. But the wait was always worth it. The art is absolutely astonishing, and there is a brilliant splash page, the one that shows the other Earth; of course, the fighting sequence between John Stone and Planetary is intense and dynamic, proving why the Texan artist has always been among the best in the industry.

Cassaday’s cover pays homage to propaganda art from WWII, including the slogan “Join the Four! Seize the World”. In this cover we see a magnificent work of design, in which identical spaceships orbit around a world which has, as its nucleus, the Four: Randall Dowling, Kim Süskind, William Leather and Jacob Greene. Laura Martin’s color scheme sticks to the essence of the proposal and adds considerable strength to the image by using only red, in a black and white setting.

“Dentro del frío” (Planetary # 25, junio de 2006) comienza con lo que parece ser una conversación pacífica entre Elijah Snow y John Stone, el hombre que lo ayudó a recuperar su memoria. John Stone, agente de S.T.O.R.M. ya había aparecido en “Mundo frío”, una referencia a la Guerra Fría y a súper espías como James Bond y Nick Fury, agente de S.H.I.E.L.D. Y obviamente, como espía, John Stone no es 100% leal a Planetary. Snow llegó a la conclusión de que Stone había sido un agente doble, conspirando con Randall Dowling durante décadas.

La confrontación es brutal, y después de ser capturado, Stone es interrogado por el líder de Planetary. En los cómics de Marvel, como era la regla en ese momento, un accidente les da a Reed Richards y su tripulación los poderes fantásticos que usarán para proteger a la humanidad; Sin embargo, Randall Dowling ha estado planeando a fondo esta expedición, con el objetivo único de obtener superpoderes para que puedan controlar a la humanidad, esclavizar y exterminar a personas inocentes. Toda la secuencia en la que los Cuatro viajan a través del Multiverso es visualmente impresionante.

En este punto, Cassaday ilustraba básicamente 2 cómics por año, en lugar del habitual ejemplar mensual. Pero la espera siempre valió la pena. El arte es absolutamente asombroso, y hay una brillante página completa que muestra la otra Tierra; por supuesto, la secuencia de lucha entre John Stone y Planetary es intensa y dinámica, lo que demuestra por qué el artista texano siempre ha estado entre los mejores de la industria.

La portada de Cassaday rinde homenaje al arte propagandístico de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, incluido el lema "¡Únete a los cuatro! Conquista el mundo". En esta portada vemos una magnífica obra de diseño, en la que naves espaciales idénticas orbitan alrededor de un mundo que tiene, como núcleo, a los Cuatro: Randall Dowling, Kim Süskind, William Leather y Jacob Greene. El esquema de color de Laura Martin se adhiere a la esencia de la propuesta y agrega una fuerza considerable a la imagen al usar solo rojo, en una configuración en blanco y negro.

Freshmen # 1-3 - Hugh Sterbakov & Leonard Kirk

More than 10 years ago, I remember reading an article online about Freshmen, which was a Top Cow / Image miniseries succinctly described as “The adventures of college freshmen with extraordinary powers”. Of course, even under this rather generic description I immediately knew that writer Hugh Sterbakov along with co-creator Seth Green had come up with something special.

Well, it took me more than a decade but I finally got around to read the first issues of Freshmen, and I absolutely loved them. The basic premise, as Sterbakov explains is that “a bunch of college freshmen have been given superpowers by the explosion of a special machine, and the powers are based on whatever they were thinking at that moment”.

What would a normal freshman be thinking about in the middle of the night? Lots of things. And it is the variety, the randomness and also the naturality of these thoughts that Sterbakov manages to convey with ease and good narrative pulse. Before the explosion, all the main characters have attended a party at a fraternity. “So one guy can burp at anyone and make them drunk, one girl can make everyone fall in love with her, another guy is totally sticky, that dude can talk to plants, this girl can jump into people’s minds… and they’re (sort of) led by a comic book geek who didn’t get any powers and a talking beaver obsessed with building dams”. 

In addition to this crazy selection of power, Sterbakov creates characters that are unique and very memorable. For example, the high school valedictorian that got drunk at the party and ended up throwing up had sworn never to drink again (as all guys do when they’re really drunk), and yet his newely gained powers are based on alcohol and now he’s in a perpetual state of hangover. Of course some have more useful powers than others, for example there is the boy who was humiliated at the party, stripped naked and ridiculed due to the modest size of his penis, at the moment of the explosion he has unzipped his pants and is measuring his penis, feeling dissatisfied with its size: his power will be having an extremely long dick. The vegan in the group gains the power of communicating with plants, which in the end will prevent him from eating even a salad, since he can hear every plant talking to him and complaining about things. I could not stop laughing at the irony of having a vegan regretting even the possibility of eating an apple (since the apple yells at him ‘please don’t eat me’). And what about the couple that had sex and now they must touch each other to use their powers even if they’re constantly fighting?

And one of my personal favorites is Norrin (who has named himself after the Silver Surfer). He reads comics all the time and since he left the building to get pizza, he’s the only one in the group that didn’t get super powers, so he turns into a sort of Robin, with a utility belt and a cape. Of course, even though Norrin insists that they should all get codenames, wear costumes and conceal their secret identities, they’re not a group of superheroes. They’re still irresponsible students even if they have extraordinary abilities.

It’s amazing to see how much character development Sterbakov is able to include in only 3 issues, I guess his experience writing Robot Chicken for Cartoon Network helped him to become a more efficient writer. Leonard Kirk is the ideal artist for this project. With considerable experience in superhero comics, Kirk knows how to make characters identifiable and how to give them different physical traits while remembering that they’re all teenagers. Kirk’s pencils are greatly inked by Andrew Pepoy. The cover artists are amazing, Joseph Michael Linsner for issue 1 and Rodolfo Migliari for issues 2 and 3, like Sterbakov explains “Either Rodolfo really likes our kids or he’s just that talented, but he always captures their emotions and makes them look their age, and I love him for it”. Indeed, Migliari is an artist I wasn’t familiar with, but his amazing talent shines through in all his covers.

Hace más de 10 años, recuerdo haber leído un artículo en línea sobre Freshmen,  una miniserie Top Cow / Image descrita sucintamente como “Las aventuras de estudiantes universitarios de primer año con poderes extraordinarios”. Por supuesto, incluso bajo esta descripción bastante genérica, supe de inmediato que el escritor Hugh Sterbakov junto con el cocreador Seth Green habían inventado algo especial.

Bueno, me llevó más de una década, pero finalmente pude leer los primeros números de Freshmen, y quedé encantado. La premisa básica, como explica Sterbakov, es que "la explosión de una máquina especial ha dado superpoderes a un grupo de estudiantes universitarios de primer año, y los poderes se basan en lo que sea que estuvieran pensando en ese momento".

¿En qué estaría pensando normalmente un estudiante de primer año en medio de la noche? Muchas cosas. Y es la variedad, la aleatoriedad y también la naturalidad de estos pensamientos lo que Sterbakov logra transmitir con facilidad y buen pulso narrativo. Antes de la explosión, todos los personajes principales han asistido a una fiesta en una fraternidad. “Así que un chico pueda eructarle a cualquiera y emborracharlo, una chica puede hacer que todos se enamoren de ella, otro chico es totalmente pegajoso, ese tipo puede hablar con las plantas, esta chica puede meterse en la mente de las personas... y están (más o menos) dirigidos por un friki del cómic que no obtuvo ningún poder y un castor parlante obsesionado con construir represas”.

Además de esta loca selección de poder, Sterbakov crea personajes únicos y muy memorables. Por ejemplo, el estudiante estrella de la escuela secundaria que se emborrachó en la fiesta y terminó vomitando había jurado nunca volver a beber (como hacen todos los muchachos cuando están realmente borrachos), y sin embargo, sus poderes recién adquiridos se basan en el alcohol y ahora está en perpetuo estado de resaca. Por supuesto, algunos tienen poderes más útiles que otros, por ejemplo, está el muchacho que fue humillado en la fiesta, desnudado y ridiculizado debido al tamaño modesto de su pene, en el momento de la explosión se desabrochó los pantalones y estaba midiendo su pene, sintiéndose insatisfecho con su tamaño: su poder será tener una polla extremadamente larga. El vegano en el grupo gana el poder de comunicarse con las plantas, lo que al final le impedirá comer incluso una ensalada, ya que puede escuchar a cada planta hablar con él y quejarse de las cosas. No pude dejar de reírme de la ironía de que un vegano lamentara incluso la posibilidad de comer una manzana (ya que la manzana le grita "por favor, no me comas"). ¿Y qué hay de la pareja que tuvo relaciones sexuales y ahora deben tocarse para usar sus poderes incluso si están peleando constantemente?

Y uno de mis favoritos es Norrin (que se nombra así gracias a Silver Surfer). Él lee cómics todo el tiempo y ya que salió del edificio para comprar pizza, es el único en el grupo que no obtuvo superpoderes, por lo que se convierte en una especie de Robin, con un cinturón lleno de artilugios y una capa. Por supuesto, a pesar de que Norrin insiste en que todos deben obtener nombres clave, usar disfraces y ocultar sus identidades secretas, no son un grupo de superhéroes. Todavía son estudiantes irresponsables, incluso si tienen habilidades extraordinarias.

First mission / primera misión

Es sorprendente ver cuánto desarrollo de personajes puede incluir Sterbakov en sólo 3 números, supongo que su experiencia escribiendo Robot Chicken para Cartoon Network lo ayudó a convertirse en un escritor más eficiente. Leonard Kirk es el artista ideal para este proyecto. Con considerable experiencia en cómics de superhéroes, Kirk sabe cómo hacer que los personajes sean identificables y cómo darles diferentes rasgos físicos al tiempo que recuerda que todos son adolescentes. Los lápices de Kirk están estupendamente entintados por Andrew Pepoy. Los artistas de las portadas son increíbles, Joseph Michael Linsner para el número 1 y Rodolfo Migliari para los números 2 y 3, como Sterbakov explica: "A Rodolfo realmente le gustan nuestros muchachos o simplemente es tan talentoso, pero siempre captura sus emociones y los hace ver de su edad, y lo amo por eso". De hecho, Migliari es un artista con el que no estaba familiarizado, pero su increíble talento brilla en todas sus portadas.

November comics / cómics de noviembre

After eating turkey and ham, I enjoyed the long weekend since I had plenty of time to read my new comics. I really liked the first issue of Bendis & Sook’s Legion of Super-Heroes, and this might very well be the first time I follow a regular series from DC since 2006 or thereabouts. Of course, there were also other very interesting first issues, such as Folklords and Money Shot, and especially Punisher Soviet! Aaron continues to delight his readers with both Conan the Barbarian and King Thor. Die, American Gods and Invaders continue to be good. But my favorite issue of the month was The Dollhouse Family # 1, Mike Carey and Peter Gross have surprised me again, I can’t wait for the next issue. And now, without further ado, here are November comics as per solicitations:

Realmente me gustó el primer número de Legion of Super-Heroes de Bendis & Sook y bien podría ser la primera colección de regular de DC que me animo a seguir desde el 2006 más o menos. Por supuesto, hubo otros interesantes primeros números, como Folklords y Money Shot, y especialmente Punisher Soviet. Aaron continúa deleitando a sus lectores con Conan the Barbarian y King Thor. November films / películas de noviembre

In November instead of Thanksgiving I enjoyed a really fun Friendsgiving with friends from Europe and other countries. And this month I was also able to go to Regal Cinemas to see Todd Phillips’ Joker (2019), a disturbing origin story of Batman’s greatest villain. I must say Joker exceeded all my expectations. Not only it’s a complex and suspenseful psychological thriller but also a very human and original interpretation of the Clown Prince of Crime. Joaquin Phoenix (Irrational Man) transforms himself completely in his role as the future Joker, showing us a vulnerable side that we didn’t know existed in such iconic villain. The protagonist is an outcast, an individual that is struggling to make a living in a bleak and miserable Gotham City. Since this wasn’t based on any specific comic book (although there are some loose references to classic stories like Alan Moore’s The Killing Joke), everything that happens here is unexpected. The main strength of the film is not special effects or meaningless plot twists, everything that matters is inside the head of the protagonist, and thanks to Phoenix’s extraordinary performance, we have access to the inner workings of the mind of a psychopath. The all-star cast includes Robert De Niro (Grudge Match), Frances Conroy, Zazie Beetz. Definitely one of the best movies of 2019. 

Arie Posin’s The Chumscrubber (2005) is a fascinating film about loss, mourning and the difficult interaction between adults and teenagers. The story begins in a wealthy suburb in Los Angeles, where adults are obsessed with ambition and success; their fake smiles and flawless houses project an image of a perfect life, but it’s all a lie. Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot) is a teenager who visits his best friend, and finds him dead, he has committed suicide, but not even his mother has noticed that, busy as she is throwing a fabulous party. Unable to cope with the loss, the protagonist becomes addicted to pills while he’s neglected by his parents. This seems be a common occurrence, as every teenager in this story is in one way or another abandoned or ignored by their parents, to the point that it’s quite painful for the viewer to accept that all this loneliness will have severe repercussions. The absentminded adults are always selfish, while the confused teenagers are always angry or uncomfortable in their own skin, and yes, they’ll do crazy things in order to survive. The talented filmmaker creates unique and unforgettable scenes, with powerful moments and situations that can make you laugh out loud or cry. In addition to a captivating script, there are so many amazing actors involved here: Lou Taylor Pucci (Spring), Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction), Rory Culkin (Electrick Children), Ralph Fiennes (Bernard and Doris), Carrie-Anne Moss and Justin Chatwin. This film is intense, unapologetic, brutally honest and deeply moving. The Chumscrubber is like an open wound that hurts, and perhaps that’s why most people won’t feel comfortable watching it, but it’s still remarkable. I recommend it.

Benjamin Kemper writes and directs Pop! (2018), a dramatic short film about Harrison Redeker, a 13-year-old boy who is trying to accept his true sexuality while being constantly bullied. Pop! depicts the hardships of everyday life, while highlighting the true value of friendship. However, despite the fact the protagonist has one good friend, that is not enough defense against the school bully or even his aggressive alcoholic father. Driven to the edge, the kid will start thinking about using a gun. The final sequence is shocking and tragic.

Un instante (2017), by Spanish director Adrià Guxens, is an inspiring and deeply insightful short film about sexual exploration and the limits of friendship. Adrià Sánchez-Campo is a college student who is trapped in his daily routine, there seems to be nothing exciting in his life till he meets Marc Joy, an enigmatic and attractive young man. They become friends. And the protagonist’s life is no longer boring but he is still afraid of expressing his true feelings. A lot can happen in a year, and nothing can happen in a year. After 4 seasons, the friend decides to move to a different city, and the student realizes how empty his life will become. Subtle, heartfelt, honest and truly touching, Un instante is an extraordinary production that deserves our attention.

En noviembre, en lugar de Thanksgiving, disfruté de un divertido Friendsgiving con amigos de Europa y otros países. Y este mes también pude ir a Regal Cinema para ver Joker (2019) de Todd Phillips, una inquietante historia sobre el origen del villano más grande de Batman. Debo decir que Joker superó todas mis expectativas. No sólo es un thriller psicológico complejo y lleno de suspenso, sino también una interpretación muy humana y original del Arlequín del Crimen. Joaquin Phoenix (Irrational Man) se transforma completamente en su papel como el futuro Joker, mostrándonos un lado vulnerable que no sabíamos que existía en un villano tan icónico. El protagonista es un marginado, un individuo que lucha por ganarse la vida en una Gotham City sombría y miserable. Como no se basa en ningún cómic específico (aunque hay algunas referencias sueltas a historias clásicas como The Killing Joke de Alan Moore), todo lo que sucede aquí es inesperado. La principal fortaleza de la película no son los efectos especiales o forzados giros argumentales, todo lo que importa está dentro de la cabeza del protagonista, y gracias a la extraordinaria actuación de Phoenix, estamos al tanto del funcionamiento interno de la mente de un psicópata. El elenco de estrellas incluye a Robert De Niro (Grudge Match), Frances Conroy, Zazie Beetz. Definitivamente una de las mejores películas del 2019.

The Chumscrubber (2005) de Arie Posin es una película fascinante sobre la pérdida, el duelo y la difícil interacción entre adultos y adolescentes. La historia comienza en un adinerado suburbio de Los Ángeles, donde los adultos están obsesionados con la ambición y el éxito; sus sonrisas falsas y sus casas impecables proyectan una imagen de una vida perfecta, pero todo es mentira. Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot) es un adolescente que visita a su mejor amigo y lo encuentra muerto, se ha suicidado, pero ni siquiera su madre se ha dado cuenta de eso, ocupada con sus invitados en una fabulosa fiesta. Incapaz de hacer frente a la pérdida, el protagonista se vuelve adicto a las píldoras mientras sus padres lo descuidan. Esto parece ser un hecho común, ya que todos los adolescentes en esta historia son abandonados o ignorados por sus padres, hasta el punto de que es bastante doloroso para el espectador aceptar que toda esta soledad tendrá graves repercusiones. Los adultos distraídos siempre son egoístas, mientras que los adolescentes confundidos siempre están enojados o incómodos en su propia piel, y sí, harán locuras para sobrevivir. El talentoso cineasta crea escenas únicas e inolvidables, con momentos y situaciones poderosas que pueden hacerte reír a carcajadas o llorar. Además de un guión cautivador, hay muchos actores increíbles involucrados aquí: Lou Taylor Pucci  (Spring), Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction), Rory Culkin (Electrick Children), Ralph Fiennes (Bernard and Doris), Carrie-Anne Moss y Justin Chatwin. Esta película es intensa, sin excusas, brutalmente honesta y conmovedora. The Chumscrubber es como una herida abierta que duele, y quizás es por eso que la mayoría de la gente no se sentirá cómoda viéndola, pero aún así es notable. La recomiendo.

Sutil, sincera, honesta y verdaderamente conmovedora, Un instante es una producción extraordinaria que merece nuestra atención.
