July comic books / cómics de julio

I went to see the fireworks on July 4 here in Davis and exactly a week later I had a nice birthday lunch with a couple of friends. And of course I rewarded myself by reading comics! The Joker Uncovered is an interesting collection of Lee Bermejo covers put together under a loose narrative. Something Epic # 2 was a solid second issue. The X-Cellent was good, and the conclusion of Clobberin’ Time came with a surprise or two. Tenement is off to a slow start. The first 2 issues of Ambassadors were great and everything went downhill after that. Wild’s End # 1 was an extraordinary first issue, and definitely a universe I would like to explore more. However, the best comic of the month, thanks to unprecedented levels of brutality and explicit violence has to be Ed Piskor’s Red Room # 2. And now, without further ado, here are July comics as per solicitations:

Fui a ver los fuegos artificiales el 4 de julio aquí en Davis y exactamente una semana después tuve un agradable almuerzo de cumpleaños con un par de amigos. ¡Y por supuesto me recompensé leyendo cómics! The Joker Uncovered es una interesante colección de portadas de Lee Bermejo reunidas bajo una narrativa suelta. Something Epic # 2 fue un segundo número sólido. After returning from my trip, I had plenty of time to read this and last month’s comics. In June, both Marvel and DC celebrated gay pride month with anthologies and variant covers. Fantastic Four # 700 was a pleasant surprise. Danger Street and The X-Cellent continue to quite good. The first issue of Something Epic had great art and the first issue of Red Room was extraordinary. However, if I had to choose my favorite comic of the month, it would be Miracleman # 5, Neil Gaiman and Mark Buckingham are an awesome creative team! And now, without further ado, here are June comics as per solicitations:

AMBASSADORS #4

(W) Mark Millar (A/CA) Olivier Coipel. Our most action-packed issue yet moves the story to Brazil, where a Catholic priest fighting drug lords is offered a spot on this international super-team-but he's happy just doing God's work in the Barrios.

Después de regresar de mi viaje, tuve mucho tiempo para leer los cómic de este mes y del anterior. En junio, tanto Marvel como DC celebraron el mes del orgullo gay con antologías y portadas variantes. Fantastic Four #700 fue una agradable sorpresa. Danger Street y The X-Cellent continúan bastante bien. El arte del primer número de Something Epic es estupendo y el primer número de Red Room fue extraordinario. Sin embargo, si tuviera que elegir mi cómic favorito del mes, sería Miracleman # 5, ¡Neil Gaiman y Mark Buckingham son un equipo creativo asombroso! Chiaroscuro: the Private Lives of Leonardo da Vinci # 5-10 - Pat McGreal, David Rawson & Chas Truog

In Chiaroscuro, there are recurring elements, quite frequently we see rather peculiar relationships between old men and teenage boys. At the time, any kind of homosexual relationship would be forbidden and would probably end up in a very serious penalty; however, these relationships were still happening in every Italian city where the story takes place: Florence, Milan, Mantua and so on.

In “Limb of Satan” (originally published in Chiaroscuro # 5, November 1995), Leonardo da Vinci has established himself in Mantua, and starts working in the most famous painting in the history of the world: the Mona Lisa. Leonardo comes up with some sketches and preliminary studies (greatly illustrated by Truog), nothing even remotely resembling to what the Mona Lisa will be. Eventually, he decides to discard them all and comes up with the design that we're all familiar with. It’s such a joy to see the visual evolution of a masterpiece. Although Chiaroscuro isn’t necessarily an archeology of art it is still a fictional archeological process, which sometimes is even more captivating than an official document.

According to Van Roojien, Chiaroscuro “breathes the spirit of the Renaissance, a celebration of the human mind. Within minutes I felt completely immersed in this fascinating account of the unbridled splendor and beauty, the sensuality and cruelty, of the world centering around Leonardo Da Vinci”. And Chas Truog’s magnificent art resonates with everyone, it’s “gorgeous in its intricacy”, affirms Andy Oliver, and I agree 100%. In addition to Truog’s pencils, we have Rafael Kayanan as inker; Carla Feeny and Lovern Kindzierski are the colorists; and the covers are photographic compositions by Stephen John Phillips, with additional design by Richard Brunning. Chiaroscuro: the Private Lives of Leonardo da Vinci which was nominated for the Eisner Award for Best Limited Series in 1996, and it should’ve won.

In “Beloved Objects” (Chiaroscuro # 6, December 1995) we see more of the history of the Mona Lisa, and how Leonardo was so emotionally attached to the painting, to a level that is difficult to understand if one is not a creator. But even in the situation of being a creator, not everyone goes through the same process. I think of myself as a writer and since I only write I don't have the same connection with the things that I create; however, for a painting, there is constant physical contact and a real interaction, a unique materiality, which is the work itself (very different from simply typing on a computer). This is very important because that realness is what drives Leonardo to hold on to that painting, as if his life depended on it.

In “Dog Eat Dog” (Chiaroscuro # 7, January 1996), Leonardo starts working as a military advisor and engineer for Borgia, who was at the time  very adept to warfare. Of all the men that Leonardo meets in his life, Borgia is perhaps the only one who realizes how manipulative Salai can be. And yet, as age starts to debilitate the Maestro, Salai is still young and attractive. The “sketch of the head of a youth was claimed to be that of Salai, 'one of his pupils' [...] this attribution at least gave us a starting point in concretely visualizing Salai, and it was consistent with Vasari's description: ‘Having fair locks abundant and curly, in which Leonardo delighted’, explains Rawson. Another description of Salai reinforces this concept: “a graceful and beautiful youth with curly hair, in which Leonardo greatly delighted”. From these descriptions, Pat McGreal and David Rawson find a connection with the greatest sculpture in the history of mankind: Michelangelo's David. In “The Giant” (Chiaroscuro # 8, February 1996), Salai is the model for David; simultaneously, the young man is briefly the lover of the only artist capable of rival Leonardo.

“The Deluge” (Chiaroscuro # 9, March 1996) is a somber and sad chapter. After many failed projects and many frustrations, after being defeated by Michelangelo, who ends up painting for the Pope in Rome, Leonardo is now an old man under the patronage of the king of France, where he must entertain the king and the French court. Around this time, Leonardo meets Francesco Melzi, an attractive young man who becomes his disciple. “Leonardo took an immediate liking to Francesco when he met him as an adolescent at his house in Milan, and took Francesco under his wing as an apprentice”.

After being abandoned by Salai, Leonardo finds consolation in the presence of Francesco Melzi: “Francesco quickly became aware of his master's loneliness, seeing past his legendary fame and genius, and felt impelled to care for him, essentially devoting his whole life to him […] Because the two were so close, lived together, and cared for each other so deeply, there have been theories that Leonardo and Francesco engaged in romantic, homosexual relations”; and as can be found in historical documents, “He described in his letter Leonardo's love for his pupils as ‘sviscerato e ardentissimo amore’” or, in other words, “uncontrolled and passionate love”. 

Besides being manipulative, “Obstinate, thief, liar and glutton are among da Vinci's immediate characterizations” of Salai. Furthermore, “Years later we read 'I'm tired of all the fighting, Salai’, why would Leonardo tolerate such an individual for a quarter century? And why is so little known about their relationship? […] Yet the intriguing fact remains... of the 13,000 manuscript pages the maestro churned out, only about 7,000 can be accounted for. So... where are the others? What happened to them?”, at its core, these are the main questions that Chiaroscuro attempts to answer, and that gives a unique significance to this absolutely astonishing comic. Despite all of Salai’s negative elements, when Leonardo’s health starts deteriorating, he constantly asks Melzi if Salai has sent any letters to him.

“The Great Bird” (Chiaroscuro # 10, April 1996) is a beautiful and heartbreaking end. In a flashback we get to see a very special memory between Leonardo da Vinci and Salai, and we see the final days of the Maestro. I read comics constantly, and I’ve read some of the greatest authors and titles out there, and yet I had no idea Chiaroscuro would be so moving. I only wish we could have more comics like this, unfortunately McGreal passed away in 2021. But at least his artistic creation remains and, sometimes, that’s all we can hope for.

En Claroscuro hay elementos recurrentes, muy a menudo vemos relaciones bastante peculiares entre hombres viejos y adolescentes. En esta época, cualquier tipo de relación homosexual estaba prohibida y probablemente terminaría en una sanción muy grave; sin embargo, estas relaciones seguían ocurriendo en todas las ciudades italianas donde se desarrolla la historia: Florencia, Milán, Mantua, etc.

En “Miembro de Satanás” (publicado originalmente en Chiaroscuro # 5, noviembre de 1995), Leonardo da Vinci se establece en Mantua y comienza a trabajar en la pintura más famosa de la historia mundial: la Mona Lisa. A Leonardo se le ocurren algunos bocetos y estudios preliminares (estupendamente ilustrados por Truog), nada que se parezca ni remotamente a lo que será la Mona Lisa. Eventualmente, decide descartarlos y se le ocurre el diseño con el que todos estamos familiarizados. Es una alegría ver la evolución visual de una obra maestra. Aunque Claroscuro no es necesariamente una arqueología del arte, sigue siendo un proceso arqueológico ficticio, que a veces es incluso más cautivador que un documento oficial.

Mantua

Según Van Roojien, en Claroscuro se “respira el espíritu del Renacimiento, una celebración de la mente humana. En cuestión de minutos me sentí completamente inmerso en este relato fascinante del esplendor y la belleza desenfrenados, la sensualidad y la crueldad del mundo que gira en torno a Leonardo Da Vinci”. Y el magnífico arte de Chas Truog resuena con todos, es “hermoso en su complejidad“, afirma Andy Oliver, y estoy 100% de acuerdo. Además de los lápices de Truog, contamos con Rafael Kayanan como entintador; Carla Feeny y Lovern Kindzierski son los coloristas; y las portadas son composiciones fotográficas de Stephen John Phillips, con diseño adicional de Richard Brunning. Chiaroscuro: the Private Lives of Leonardo da Vinci, fue nominada al Premio Eisner a la Mejor Serie Limitada en 1996, y debió haberlo ganado.

Mona Lisa

En “Objetos amados” (Chiaroscuro # 6, diciembre de 1995) vemos más de la historia de la Mona Lisa, y cómo Leonardo estaba tan apegado emocionalmente a la pintura, a un nivel que es difícil de entender si uno no es un creador. Pero incluso en la situación de ser creador, no todos pasan por el mismo proceso. Me considero un escritor y como sólo escribo no tengo la misma conexión con las cosas que creo; sin embargo, en una pintura hay un contacto físico constante y una interacción real, una materialidad única, que es la obra misma (muy diferente a simplemente teclear en una computadora). Esto es muy importante porque esa realidad es lo que impulsa a Leonardo a aferrarse a ese cuadro, como si su vida dependiera de ello.

Salai = David

En “Perro come perro” (Claroscuro # 7, enero de 1996), Leonardo comienza a trabajar como asesor militar e ingeniero de Borgia, quien en ese momento era muy aficionado a la guerra. De todos los hombres que Leonardo conoce en su vida, Borgia es quizás el único que se da cuenta de lo manipulador que puede ser Salai. Y, sin embargo, a medida que la edad comienza a debilitar al Maestro, Salai sigue siendo joven y atractivo. Se afirmó que el “bosquejo de la cabeza de un joven era el de Salai, 'uno de sus alumnos' [...] esta atribución al menos nos dio un punto de partida para visualizar concretamente a Salai, y era consistente con la descripción de Vasari: 'Tenía mechones rubios abundantes y rizados, en los que Leonardo se deleitaba'”, explica Rawson. Otra descripción de Salai refuerza este concepto: “un joven agraciado y hermoso con cabello rizado, en el que Leonardo se deleitaba enormemente”. En “El Gigante” (Claroscuro # 8, febrero de 1996), Salai es el modelo de David; simultáneamente, el joven es brevemente el amante del único artista capaz de rivalizar con Leonardo.

Francesco Melzi & Leonardo da Vinci

“El diluvio” (Claroscuro # 9, marzo de 1996) es un capítulo sombrío y triste. Tras muchos proyectos fallidos y muchas frustraciones, tras ser derrotado por Miguel Ángel, que acaba pintando para el Papa en Roma, Leonardo es ahora un anciano bajo el patrocinio del rey de Francia, donde debe entretener al rey y a la corte francesa. Por esta época, Leonardo conoce a Francesco Melzi, un atractivo joven que se convierte en su discípulo. “Leonardo se encariñó inmediatamente con Francesco cuando lo conoció de adolescente en su casa de Milán, y tomó a Francesco bajo su ala como aprendiz”.

Salai = Saint John the Baptist

Después de ser abandonado por Salai, Leonardo encuentra consuelo en la presencia de Francesco Melzi: “Francesco se dio cuenta rápidamente de la soledad de su maestro, viendo más allá de su fama y genio legendarios, y se sintió impulsado a cuidarlo, esencialmente dedicándole toda su vida [ …] Debido a que los dos eran tan cercanos, vivían juntos y se preocupaban tanto el uno por el otro, ha habido teorías de que Leonardo y Francesco tuvieron relaciones homosexuales románticas”; y como puede encontrarse en documentos históricos, “Él describió en su carta el amor de Leonardo por sus alumnos como ‘sviscerato e ardentissimo amore’” o, en otras palabras, “amor descontrolado y ardentísimo”.

Además de ser manipulador, “obstinado, ladrón, mentiroso y glotón se encuentran entre las caracterizaciones inmediatas de da Vinci” de Salai. Además, “Años después leemos 'Estoy cansado de todas las peleas, Salai', ¿por qué Leonardo toleraría a un individuo así durante un cuarto de siglo? ¿Y por qué se sabe tan poco sobre su relación? […] Sin embargo, el hecho intrigante permanece... de las 13,000 páginas manuscritas que el maestro produjo, sólo se pueden contabilizar unas 7,000. Entonces... ¿dónde están las demás? ¿Qué les pasó?”, en el fondo, estas son las principales preguntas que Claroscuro intenta responder, y que le dan un significado único a este cómic absolutamente asombroso. A pesar de todos los elementos negativos de Salai, cuando la salud de Leonardo comienza a deteriorarse, constantemente le pregunta a Melzi si Salai le ha enviado alguna carta.

“Gran ave” (Claroscuro # 10, abril de 1996) es un final hermoso y desgarrador. En un flashback podemos ver un recuerdo muy especial entre Leonardo da Vinci y Salai, y vemos los últimos días del Maestro. Leo cómics constantemente, y he leído algunos de los mejores autores y títulos que existen, y sin embargo, no tenía idea de que Claroscuro sería tan conmovedor. Ojalá pudiéramos tener más cómics como este, lamentablemente McGreal falleció el 2021. Pero al menos su creación artística permanece y, a veces, eso es todo lo que podemos pedir.

Chiaroscuro: the Private Lives of Leonardo da Vinci # 1-4 - Pat McGreal, David Rawson & Chas Truog

In Vertigo’s early days, most projects were connected to pre-existing intellectual property. Maybe at the beginning not that many risks were taken but Chiaroscuro: the Private Lives of Leonardo da Vinci is a magnificent example of audacity. Thanks to legendary editor Karen Burger, this project became a reality even though it had everything against it. This wasn't a superhero story reinterpreted for mature audiences, this wasn't part of the Sandman universe or a Hellblazer miniseries. It was different to everything else being published at the time in the US.

In the American market very few historical comics existed, in contrast with Europe. Chiaroscuro represents that breaking point where everyone realizes that Vertigo can be many things as an imprint, not just the slightly edgier, more mature-audience related reinterpretation of DC characters. Vertigo would be a place for completely innovative stories, by new and courageous creative teams: “From the moment I first encountered the salacious, hedonistic, entirely charismatic character of Salai, I was hooked as it seems was Leonardo. Of all the mysteries surrounding DaVinci -and there are many- none seems more intriguing to me than the strange affection he held for this young man, since many of the surprising revelations in Chiaroscuro are based on historical research”, explains co-editor Alisa Kwitney.

‘Salai’ was actually a nickname in Italian, meaning ‘little devil’. According to David Rawson: “A good deal of history is simply best guess agreement among scholars, often ultimately deriving from a single source itself imprecise. From what is held true, we speculated about what might be true regarding Da Vinci's motivations and feelings. Where no one could reasonably prove us wrong, we invented. I will say this, though: folks are going to be hard put to identify what is real, what is supposition and what is invention. Often the stranger stuff is real”. Certainly, the amount of historical research involved in this project is impressive. 

Artist Chas Truog explains his approach: “Those are the comics I'd like to do. To a larger extent, Chiaroscuro has been an answer to that wish. But it's been said that we have to be careful what we wish for, because we might get it. Chiaroscuro has also been a lot more work than the average comics project. The art style requires more time to draw (forget about doing a page a day!), and then there's research: you might draw someone standing in a doorway, get the costume right, and then realize you have no idea what a doorknob looks like in 1500. What eating utensils do they use? Is that suit of armor from the right period?”. After working with Grant Morrison in the groundbreaking Animal Man, Truog proves to be the right artist for a Renaissance comic.

Salai...

The private life of Leonardo da Vinci is told by his protégé Salai, who is posing nude for a sculptor that remains unseen to the reader. Salai is a young man who is adopted by the Maestro when he is a 10-year-old child; Salai grows up in the court of Milan, along with the da Vinci. The story isn’t told in chronological order but rather in the order Salai remembers things. We see how Salai feels from the beginning, how much he revered Leonardo as a child, in those early years, for Salai, Leonardo was this unreachable idol, this larger than life figure. But when Salai becomes a teenager, he starts to rebel against the Maestro. He becomes even more unpredictable and disobedient than ever, until he no longer admires da Vinci; in fact, he starts despising the Maestro. 

...bisexual?

Salai’s entire existence is defined by his companionship with Leonardo, he’s always lived under his shadow and now he must discover who he truly is, on his own, and so he embarks on a journey of at sexual escapades both with men and women, while he tries to understand the mechanisms of power within the court. In “The Black Room” (originally published in Chiaroscuro # 2, August 1995), Salai loses his virginity at the hands of a selfish man who will abandon him later. “After the bit where Leonardo spurns Salai's sexual advances, we knew Salai was going to give himself over to someone else in retribution”, explains Pat McGreal. Salai is always seeking revenge; he is frustrated with Leonardo but at the same time confused; he knows Leonardo feels attracted to him but he doesn't understand why this doesn't end up in a physical encounter. Perhaps it's because Leonardo, as much as he finds the boy attractive and beautiful, sees him more as an adopted son. It's impossible to know for sure what really happened between them, even if they ended up having sex there would be no historical records about that.

In “Greater than light” (Chiaroscuro # 1, July 1995), we get to see a historical moment, when Leonardo and Michelangelo are both tasked to produce a mural in Florence. Here and in real life as well, they were both unable to complete this project, which would have been the ultimate artistic competition: the two greatest masters of art in the history of mankind, the two greatest men of the Renaissance, side by side, a mural versus another mural. Alas, this never came to happen, but that moment is represented here, and we see how everyone in Florence is just so curious about what the murals will look like, and they keep asking questions to Salai, because he is the only one who is close to Leonardo and to Michelangelo.

Firenze

In “Clearly in Dreams” (Chiaroscuro # 3, September 1995) and “Dispero” (Chiaroscuro # 4, October 1995), Leonardo is struggling as a young artist; he works in a workshop for Verrochio and he's having a hard time to find the patronage that he needs to become the artist that he knows he can be. After a party, he ends up visiting a young man, and there is an intimate encounter between them. Shortly after that, Leonardo is accused of committing sodomy, a very serious crime, and he is sent to prison. Fortunately for him, a cousin of Lorenzo de Medici intervenes and he's able to escape the death penalty. After that, of course, Leonardo becomes more reclusive and more careful about his private life. 

Leonardo da Vinci & Salai

Botticelli and other friends are trying to tell Leonardo that he has no future with the Medici family and the Maestro understands that he needs to go to Milan, to work for Ludovico Sforza. Once he goes there, his brilliant career starts and he stays there for 18 years. What was supposed to be one of his greatest accomplishments, which was an equestrian sculpture (the greatest in the world at the time), had suffered may many delays. I knew about all of this because I'm a big fan of Leonardo da Vinci and I have read a couple of biographies, and yet it's especially refreshing to see all of this unfolding in the pages of a comic book. We see the progress of this project, and how Leonardo was so passionate about it and how it gets delayed over and over again, it's so frustrating for him. At the end, of course, we see the fall of Milan, as they are conquered by the French, and suddenly everything changes. Leonardo loses absolutely everything. He no longer has a powerful noble man supporting him and so with very few belongings he has to flee to Mantua. In this moment, we see the complex relationship between the Maestro and the protégé, between the adult and the young man, and we see how Salai is able to manipulate Leonardo.

En los primeros días de Vertigo, la mayoría de los proyectos estaban conectados a alguna propiedad intelectual preexistente. Quizás al principio no se corrieron muchos riesgos pero Claroscuro: las vidas privadas de Leonardo da Vinci es un magnífico ejemplo de audacia. Gracias a la legendaria editora Karen Burger, este proyecto se hizo realidad a pesar de que tenía todo en su contra. Esta no era una historia de superhéroes reinterpretada para audiencias maduras, no era parte del universo de Sandman o una miniserie de Hellblazer. En el mercado estadounidense existían muy pocos cómics históricos, a diferencia del europeo. claroscuro representa ese punto de quiebre en el que todos se dan cuenta de que Vertigo puede ser muchas cosas como un sello editorial, no sólo la reinterpretación de personajes de DC, con tono atrevido y maduro. Vertigo sería un lugar para historias completamente innovadoras, por equipos creativos nuevos y valientes: “Desde el momento en que me encontré por primera vez con el personaje lascivo, hedonista y completamente carismático de Salai, y parece que igual le pasó a Leonardo. De todos los misterios que rodean a DaVinci -y son muchos- ninguno me parece más intrigante que el extraño cariño que le tenía a este joven, ya que muchas de las sorprendentes revelaciones en Claroscuro se basan en investigaciones históricas”, explica la coeditora Alisa Kwitney.

'Salai' era en realidad un apodo en italiano, que significaba 'diablillo'. Según David Rawson: “Una gran parte de la historia es simplemente el mejor acuerdo de conjeturas entre los académicos, que a menudo se deriva en última instancia de una fuente única en sí misma imprecisa. A partir de lo que se considera cierto, especulamos sobre lo que podría ser cierto con respecto a las motivaciones y sentimientos de Da Vinci. Donde nadie podía probar razonablemente que estábamos equivocados, inventamos. Sin embargo, diré esto: a la gente le resultará difícil identificar qué es real, qué es una suposición y qué es una invención. A menudo, las cosas más extrañas son reales”. Ciertamente, la cantidad de investigación histórica involucrada en este proyecto es impresionante.

El artista Chas Truog explica su enfoque: “Esos son los cómics que me gustaría hacer. En mayor medida, Claroscuro ha sido una respuesta a ese deseo. Pero se ha dicho que tenemos que tener cuidado con lo que deseamos, porque podemos conseguirlo. Claroscuro también ha sido mucho más trabajo que el proyecto promedio de cómics. El estilo artístico requiere más tiempo para dibujar (¡olvídate de hacer una página al día!), y luego está la investigación: podrías dibujar a alguien parado en una puerta, acertar con el traje y luego darte cuenta de que no tienes idea de cómo se ve un picaporte en 1500. ¿Qué utensilios para comer usan? ¿Es esa armadura del período correcto?”. Después de trabajar con Grant Morrison en el rompedor Animal Man, Truog demuestra ser el artista adecuado para un cómic renacentista.

Leonardo da Vinci's last days in Milan / los últimos días de Leonardo da Vinci en Milán

La vida privada de Leonardo da Vinci es contada por su protegido Salai, quien posa desnudo para un escultor que permanece oculto para el lector. Salai es un joven que fue adoptado por el Maestro cuando era un niño de 10 años; Salai crece en la corte de Milán, junto con da Vinci. La historia no se cuenta en orden cronológico, sino en el orden en que Salai recuerda las cosas. Vemos cómo se siente Salai desde el principio, cuánto reverenciaba a Leonardo cuando era niño, en esos primeros años, para Salai, Leonardo era este ídolo inalcanzable, esta figura más grande que la vida. Pero cuando Salai se convierte en un adolescente, comienza a rebelarse contra el Maestro. En “La habitación negra” (publicado originalmente en Chiaroscuro # 2, agosto de 1995), Salai pierde su virginidad a manos de un hombre egoísta que lo abandonará más tarde. “Después de la parte en la que Leonardo rechaza las insinuaciones sexuales de Salai, sabíamos que Salai se iba a entregar a otra persona como retribución”, explica Pat McGreal. Salai siempre está buscando venganza; está frustrado con Leonardo pero al mismo tiempo confundido; sabe que Leonardo se siente atraído por él pero no entiende por qué esto no termina en un encuentro físico. Tal vez sea porque Leonardo, por mucho que encuentra al adolescente atractivo y hermoso, lo ve más como un hijo adoptivo. Es imposible saber con certeza qué sucedió realmente entre ellos, incluso si hubiesen terminado teniendo relaciones sexuales, no habría registros históricos al respecto.

En “Más grande que la luz” (Chiaroscuro # 1, julio de 1995), podemos ver un momento histórico, cuando Leonardo y Miguel Ángel tienen la tarea de producir un mural en Florencia. Aquí y en la vida real, ambos fueron incapaces de completar este proyecto, que habría sido la competencia artística definitiva: los dos más grandes maestros del arte en la historia de la humanidad, los dos más grandes hombres del Renacimiento, uno al lado del otro, un mural versus otro mural. En “Claramente en sueños” (Chiaroscuro # 3, setiembre de 1995) y “Desespero” (Chiaroscuro # 4, octubre de 1995), Leonardo es un joven artista en aprietos; trabaja en un taller para Verrochio y le cuesta encontrar el patrocinio que necesita para convertirse en el artista que sabe que puede ser. Después de una fiesta, acaba visitando a un joven, y se produce un encuentro íntimo entre ambos. Poco después, Leonardo es acusado de cometer sodomía, un delito muy grave, y es enviado a prisión. Afortunadamente para él, interviene un primo de Lorenzo de Medici y logra escapar de la pena de muerte. Después de eso, por supuesto, Leonardo se vuelve más solitario y más cuidadoso con su vida privada.

Botticelli y otros amigos intentan decirle a Leonardo que no tiene futuro con la familia Medici y el Maestro entiende que necesita ir a Milán a trabajar para Ludovico Sforza. Una vez que va allí, comienza su brillante carrera y permanece allí durante 18 años. Lo que se suponía que sería uno de sus mayores logros, una escultura ecuestre (la más grande del mundo en ese momento), había sufrido muchos retrasos. Sabía todo esto porque soy un gran admirador de Leonardo da Vinci y he leído un par de biografías y, sin embargo, es especialmente refrescante ver todo esto desarrollándose en las páginas de un cómic. Vemos el progreso de este proyecto, y cómo a Leonardo le apasionaba tanto y cómo se retrasa una y otra vez, algo muy frustrante para él. Al final, por supuesto, vemos la caída de Milán, ya que son conquistados por los franceses, y de repente todo cambia. Leonardo lo pierde absolutamente todo. Ya no tiene a un noble poderoso que lo apoye y con muy pocas pertenencias tiene que huir a Mantua. En ese momento, vemos la compleja relación entre el Maestro y el protegido, entre el adulto y el joven, y vemos cómo Salai es capaz de manipular a Leonardo.
