In April I finally managed to spend a weekend in Lexington, the biggest city near Richmond. Of course, I also had time to watch a combination of new and old productions. Let’s start with Holland (2025), directed by Mimi Cave, a thriller that revolves around the seemingly perfect life of Nicole Kidman (The Killing of a Sacred Deer), his husband Matthew Macfadyen (Succession), and their child, Jude Hill; they alive in an idyllic town but soon, the protagonist starts suspecting her husband’s constant work trips. She enlists her colleague, and future lover, Gael García Bernal, to find out what the husband is up to. However, this won’t be about simple infidelity but something far darker and sinister. Cave skillfully creates scenes with suspense and delivers an entertaining story, although there are a few weak plot points.

A prequel of the magnificent A Quiet Place, Michael Sarnoski directs A Quiet Place: Day One (2024), which will take us to the first day of the alien invasion that threatens with mankind’s annihilation. Cancer patient Lupita Nyong'o (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) survives the first attack of these mysterious and powerful alien creatures that use sound to locate their prey. She also runs into Joseph Quinn (Gladiator II), and together they must survive against impossible odds. The cast also includes Alex Wolff, Djimon Hounsou and Alfie Todd. Although it isn’t as brilliant as the original A Quiet Place, it’s still quite satisfactory and there are some really good scenes. 

J.A. Bayona directs La sociedad de la nieve (2023), definitely one of the best films of 2023. A heartbreaking, deeply disturbing and yet powerfully moving recreation of a tragic accident that happened in real life. In 1972, an airplane from Uruguay carrying a rugby team and other people crashed in the Andes mountains. Bayona’s historical reconstruction of the events is flawless, however, the real value of the film is the way the Spanish filmmaker portrays the strong friendship between the rugby players, all of them young men, and the impossible decisions they must take. Isolated in the freezing Andes, without food or any other resources, they must resort to necrophagic practices, even if this seems like a disgusting and immoral idea at first. In extreme circumstances, and without the possibility of being rescued, the only alternative is to eat the lifeless corpses of those who had already died, people that were close friends, even relatives. For 71 days, a small group of young men manage to survive, until two of them take the ultimate risk and decide to cross the Andes in order to reach Chile, desperately looking for help. Bayona’s film is intense, full of emotional strength and offers a unique insight into the will to live and the sacrifices we can make when there’s nothing left. Extraordinary.

Charlie Kaufman writes and directs I’m Thinking of Ending Things (2020), an excellent film about the nature of time and existential doubts that accompany us, whether we’re alone or in a relationship. Jessie Buckley (The Lost Daughter) is, indeed, thinking of ending things, but still agrees to meet the parents of her boyfriend, Jesse Plemons (Kinds of Kindness). The mom is Toni Collette (Nightmare Alley) and the dad is David Thewlis (The Zero Theorem), there is an incredible tension during dinner, and even if everything seems normal on the surface, the viewer can’t help but to feel genuinely afraid of what might happen. Even if this isn’t a horror film, the twisted memories of the parents, the hidden childhood traumas and the devastation caused by time will surely chill you to the marrow. I will avoid spoilers, but as soon as I saw how the parents were getting so old, I knew there would be no happy endings here. But such is life.

Jeepers Creepers (2001), directed by Victor Salva, has evidently become a classic of contemporary horror. Gina Philips and her brother Justin Long (Dodgeball) are driving home for spring break, while she laughs and makes fun of his brother’s dirty laundry, they encounter an aggressive driver, who will soon end up chasing them. While the two college kids run away, discover what the driver is hiding in an abandoned house: mutilated corpses. Is this stranger a serial killer or something far worse? Every 23 years, and for 23 days, an evil creature hunts and kills people, taking from them certain organs. Gina Philips desperately tries to recruit someone to help her rescue her brother, but the creature she’s facing cannot be easily defeated. Full of suspense, strong horror and unique sequences, Jeepers Creepers will certainly keep you at the edge of your seat. 

Victor Salva directs the sequel Jeepers Creepers 2 (2003), the 23 days aren’t over yet, and this time, the evil creature will hunt a school bus full of high school students, such as Josh Hammond, Billy Aaron Brown, Al Santos and Nicki Aycox. What begins like a fun road trip in which a group of high school athletes are chanting the name of the school mascot ‘cocks’. Trapped in the middle of the road, they soon realize they’re up against a monstrous creature, unrelenting and capable of flying. Nicki Aycox, the cheerleader, has visions of the brother and sister from the first movie, and understands the true nature of the creature, and she’s the only one that can guarantee the survival of the rest of the group. I had seen both movies years ago, and some of the scenes are truly unforgettable. Horror at its best.

En abril por fin pude pasar un fin de semana en Lexington, la ciudad más grande cerca de Richmond. Por supuesto, también tuve tiempo para ver una combinación de producciones nuevas y antiguas. Empecemos con Holland (2025), dirigida por Mimi Cave, un thriller que gira en torno a la vida aparentemente perfecta de Nicole Kidman (The Killing of a Sacred Deer), su marido Matthew Macfadyen (Succession) y su hijo, Jude Hill. Viven en un pueblito idílico, pero pronto la protagonista empieza a sospechar de los constantes viajes de trabajo de su marido. Recurre a su colega y futuro amante, Gael García Bernal, para averiguar qué trama. Sin embargo, no se trata de una simple infidelidad, sino de algo mucho más oscuro y siniestro. Cave crea escenas de suspenso con gran habilidad y ofrece una historia entretenida, aunque con algunos puntos argumentales flojos.

Una precuela de la magnífica A Quiet Place, dirigida por Michael Sarnoski, A Quiet Place: Day One (2024), nos llevará al primer día de la invasión alienígena que amenaza con la aniquilación de la humanidad. Aunque no es tan brillante como la original A Quiet Place, sigue siendo bastante satisfactoria y cuenta con algunas escenas realmente buenas.

Una recreación desgarradora, profundamente perturbadora y, a la vez, poderosamente conmovedora de un trágico accidente ocurrido en la vida real. En 1972, un avión procedente de Uruguay que transportaba a un equipo de rugby, y a otras personas, se estrelló en la cordillera de los Andes. La reconstrucción histórica de los hechos por Bayona es impecable; sin embargo, el verdadero valor de la película reside en cómo el cineasta español retrata la sólida amistad entre los jugadores de rugby, todos jóvenes, y las decisiones imposibles que deben tomar. Aislados en los gélidos Andes, sin comida ni otros recursos, deben recurrir a prácticas necrófagas, aunque al principio parezca una idea repugnante e inmoral. En circunstancias extremas, y sin posibilidad de ser rescatados, la única alternativa es comerse los cadáveres de quienes ya han fallecido, amigos cercanos, incluso familiares. Durante 71 días, un pequeño grupo de jóvenes logra sobrevivir, hasta que dos de ellos asumen el riesgo definitivo y deciden cruzar los Andes para llegar a Chile, buscando desesperadamente ayuda. La película de Bayona es intensa, llena de fuerza emocional, y ofrece una visión única de la voluntad de vivir y los sacrificios que podemos hacer cuando ya no queda nada. Extraordinaria.

Los 23 días aún no han terminado, y esta vez, la criatura maligna perseguirá un autobús escolar lleno de estudiantes de secundaria, como Josh Hammond, Billy Aaron Brown, Al Santos y Nicki Aycox. Lo que comienza como un divertido viaje por carretera en el que un grupo de atletas de secundaria corea el nombre de la mascota de la escuela, ‘polla’. Atrapados en medio de la carretera, pronto se dan cuenta de que se enfrentan a una criatura monstruosa, implacable y capaz de volar. Nicki Aycox, la animadora, tiene visiones de los hermanos de la primera película y comprende la verdadera naturaleza de la criatura; y ella es la única que puede garantizar la supervivencia del resto del grupo. Vi ambas películas hace años, y algunas escenas son realmente inolvidables. Terror en su máxima expresión.

March comics / cómics de marzo

In March I had the chance to travel to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and what an amazing trip that was! The same month I was also lucky to read a magnificent selection of comics. The new arc of Batman Dark Patterns it’s quite promising. Absolute Wonder Woman and Fantastic Four were great! The conclusion of Mystique was satisfying and the first issue of Weapon X-Men was good. Dust to Dust continues to amaze me with JG Jones’ beautiful art. This time, I had 3 strong contenders for favorite comic of the month: Assorted Crisis Event #1, Absolute Superman #5 and, the winner, The Nice House by the Sea #6, James Tynion IV and Álvaro Martínez Bueno are the best creative team of the year! En marzo tuve la oportunidad de viajar a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, ¡y vaya viaje tan asombroso! Ese mismo mes también tuve la suerte de leer una magnífica selección de cómics. El nuevo arco argumental de Batman Dark Patterns es bastante prometedor. ¡Absolute Wonder Woman y Fantastic Four fueron estupendos! La conclusión de Mystique fue satisfactoria y el primer número de Weapon X-Men estuvo bien. Dust to Dust sigue sorprendiéndome con el hermoso arte de JG Jones. Esta vez, tenía tres firmes contendientes para el cómic favorito del mes: Assorted Crisis Event #1, Absolute Superman #5 y, el ganador, The Nice House by the Sea #6. ¡James Tynion IV y Álvaro Martínez Bueno forman el mejor equipo creativo del año! March films / películas de marzo

In March I had the opportunity to watch several new productions. Let’s start with a Netflix original, The Electric State (2025), which received mixed reviews. Director Anthony Russo and Joe Russo adapt the novel by Simon Stålenhag, which takes place in an alternative timeline, where the 90s were populated by robots that rebel against mankind and are ultimately defeated. Now only a few scattered surviving robots remain, and one of them visits Millie Bobby Brown, claiming to be driven by Woody Norman, the mind of her lost brother, who was believed to be dead. Soon, the girl embarks on a trip to try to decipher this mystery and find her brother, and it’s aided by smugglers and small-time crooks Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy) and his robot companion. As much as I loved the premise I would say the first half of the movie is quite slow, even boring at times. There are many scenes that don’t really come well together and the connection between certain moments and characters can be a bit tenuous. The second half of the movie starts to get better, but it’s too late to redeem the whole thing. I did enjoy tremendously the last confrontation between the protagonists, assisted by the rebel robots, and Stanley Tucci, the greedy and evil CEO of a powerful technological corporation. Despite its faults, I have to say I absolutely loved the ending of The Electric State, especially the moment when the protagonist must make an impossible decision, and sacrifice that which she loves the most. 

Jesse Eisenberg writes and directs A Real Pain (2024), a fascinating film about two cousins, played by Kieran Culkin (Succession) and Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network), who travel to Europe to reconnect with their Jewish roots while visiting concentration camps and other WWII historical sites. From the get go, it’s clear that this isn’t just a fun vacation. Is it an attempt to understand the past, to bond over mutual family tragedies, to expunge a sense of guilt? It could be all of it together. The two cousins are part of a larger group of Jewish people, all of them have embarked on this trip for different reasons but the one true constant is how emotionally shocking it can be to stand in a real concentration camp, touching a nightmarish place in which thousands of innocent people were massacred. Just as equally intense is the relationship between the two cousins. They couldn’t be more different and yet, in strange ways, they’re the same, after all, they’re family. With a superb script and top notch performances, it’s no surprise to see this film received many awards nomination, Kieran Culkin won the Oscar as best supporting actor and he truly deserves it. Although both men are flawed and are in different stages of emotional pain, Kieran Culkin’s character shines through the film constantly, due to his effervescent and enthusiastic personality, but above all, due to his sensibility, able to laugh and cry until no tears are left. Of course, this energetic output is just a way of masquerading his sad reality. I consider the ending to be absolutely brilliant, when the two cousins part ways, one, back to his apparently successful life, the other, back into a void which cannot be filled. Definitely one of the best films from 2024!

James Mangold directs A Complete Unknown (2024), a biopic that revolves around the early career of Bob Dylan, masterfully interpreted by Timothée Chalamet (Dune). When the young musician arrives to New York, without money and fame, he quickly befriends folk singer Pete Seegers, played by Edward Norton (Fight Club). We get to see the beginning of a legendary career, as well as the musician’s first love, Elle Fanning (A Rainy Day in New York) and his special relationship with singer Joan Baez, played by Monica Barbaro. Amazing historical reconstruction, phenomenal acting and wonderful music turn A Complete Unknown into a delightful cinematic, even though the story itself is rather conventional. I still can’t believe Bob Dylan’s life was so boring, he has a few drinks every now and then, and technically two girlfriends at the same time, but that’s just about it. 

Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness (2024) is as peculiar, original and deranged as his previous projects. This time we’re in front of a ‘triptych fable’ in which the same actors, namely Emma Stone (Poor Things), Jesse Plemons (The Power of the Dog), Willem Dafoe (4:44 Last Day on Earth) and Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers), play different roles. In the first story we see how one man completely dominates and controls another man, in ways that go beyond power and sexuality; in the second tale, we have a reinterpretation of the classic sci-fi trope: the person you love the most has returned, except this time it isn’t a human being; finally, in the third fable, the search for a promised messiah will lead its protagonists to the darkest places. Overall, I was satisfied with the Greek filmmaker’s output, although it must be said that this isn’t one of his best productions.

En marzo tuve la oportunidad de ver varias producciones nuevas. Empecemos con una producción original de Netflix, The Electric State (2025), que recibió críticas mixtas. Los directores Anthony Russo y Joe Russo adaptan la novela de Simon Stålenhag, ambientada en una línea temporal alternativa de los 90s, poblados por robots que se rebelaron contra la humanidad y finalmente fueron derrotados. Ahora sólo quedan unos pocos robots supervivientes dispersos, y uno de ellos visita a Millie Bobby Brown, afirmando estar guiado por Woody Norman, la mente de su hermano perdido, a quien se creía muerto. Pronto, la chica se embarca en un viaje para intentar descifrar este misterio y encontrar a su hermano, con la ayuda de los contrabandistas y delincuentes de poca monta Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy) y su compañero robot. Aunque me encantó la premisa, diría que la primera mitad de la película es bastante lenta, incluso aburrida por momentos. Hay muchas escenas que no encajan bien y la conexión entre ciertos momentos y personajes puede ser un poco tenue. La segunda mitad de la película empieza a mejorar, pero es demasiado tarde para que se pueda redimir. Disfruté muchísimo del último enfrentamiento entre los protagonistas, asistidos por los robots rebeldes, y Stanley Tucci, el codicioso y malvado director ejecutivo de una poderosa corporación tecnológica. A pesar de sus defectos, debo decir que me encantó el final de The Electric State, especialmente el momento en el que la protagonista debe tomar una decisión imposible y sacrificar aquello que más ama.

Jesse Eisenberg escribe y dirige A Real Pain (2024), una fascinante película sobre dos primos, interpretados por Kieran Culkin y Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network), que viajan a Europa para reconectar con sus raíces judías mientras visitan campos de concentración y otros sitios históricos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Desde el principio, queda claro que no se trata de unas vacaciones divertidas. ¿Es un intento de comprender el pasado, de conectar con tragedias familiares compartidas, de expulsar la culpa? Podría ser todo junto. Los dos primos forman parte de un grupo más amplio de judíos. Todos se embarcaron en este viaje por diferentes motivos, pero la única constante es lo emocionalmente impactante que puede ser estar en un verdadero campo de concentración, tocando un lugar de pesadilla donde miles de inocentes fueron masacrados. La relación entre ambos primos es igual de intensa. Son completamente diferentes y, sin embargo, curiosamente, son iguales; después de todo, son familia. Con un guion magnífico y actuaciones de primera, no sorprende que esta película haya recibido numerosas nominaciones a premios. Kieran Culkin ganó el Óscar a mejor actor de reparto, y se lo merece. Aunque ambos tienen defectos y se encuentran en diferentes etapas de dolor emocional, el personaje de Kieran Culkin brilla constantemente en la película, gracias a su personalidad efervescente y entusiasta, pero sobre todo, a su sensibilidad, capaz de reír y llorar hasta no poder contener las lágrimas. Por supuesto, esta energía es solo una forma de enmascarar su triste realidad. Considero el final absolutamente brillante, cuando los dos primos se separan: uno, regresa a su aparentemente exitosa vida, el otro, a un vacío inabarcable. ¡Sin duda, una de las mejores películas del 2024!

Una asombrosa reconstrucción histórica, una actuación fenomenal y una música maravillosa convierten a A Complete Unknown en una película encantadora, a pesar de que la historia en sí es bastante convencional. Todavía no puedo creer que la vida de Bob Dylan fuera tan aburrida: se toma unas traguitos de vez en cuando y, técnicamente, tiene dos novias a la vez, pero eso es todo.

Kinds of Kindness (2024), de Yorgos Lanthimos, es tan peculiar, original y desquiciada como sus proyectos anteriores. Esta vez nos encontramos ante un tríptico fabulesco en el que los mismos actores, Emma Stone (Poor Things), Jesse Plemons (The Power of the Dog), Willem Dafoe (4:44 Last Day on Earth) y Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers), interpretan papeles diferentes. En la primera historia, vemos cómo un hombre domina y controla por completo a otro, de maneras que van más allá del poder y la sexualidad; en el segundo relato, tenemos una reinterpretación del clásico tropo de la ciencia ficción: la persona que más amas ha regresado, sólo que esta vez no es un ser humano; finalmente, en la tercera fábula, la búsqueda del mesías prometido llevará a sus protagonistas a los lugares más oscuros. En general, quedé satisfecho con la producción del cineasta griego, aunque hay que decir que esta no es una de sus mejores producciones.

February Comics / Cómics de febrero

I had the good fortune of reading amazing comics in February. Fantastic Four and One World Under Doom, both by Ryan North, exceeded my expectations. The Nice House by the Sea continues to be one of my favorite monthly titles. The art in Dust to Dust is absolutely impressive! DC Horror Presents, Mystique and Blood Squad Seven were quite entertaining. I’m still fascinated by Absolute Batman, Absolute Wonder Woman and especially Absolute Superman. Doctor Doom and Rocket Raccoon was fun. I very much enjoyed the Judge Dredd Megazine but if I have to choose my favorite comic of the month, that honor goes to Bug Wars #1, Jason Aaron and Mahmud Asrar have created a wonderful new title. And now, without further ado, here are February comics as per solicitations:

Tuve la buena fortuna de leer cómics asombrosos en febrero. Fantastic Four y One World Under Doom, ambos de Ryan North, superaron mis expectativas. The Nice House by the Sea sigue siendo uno de mis títulos mensuales favoritos. ¡El arte de Dust to Dust es absolutamente impresionante! DC Horror Presents, Mystique y Blood Squad Seven fueron bastante entretenidos. Aun sigo fascinado con Absolute Batman, Absolute Wonder Woman y especialmente Absolute Superman. Doctor Doom y Rocket Raccoon fue divertido. Disfruté muchísimo de la revista Judge Dredd, pero si tengo que elegir mi cómic favorito del mes, ese honor es para Bug Wars #1. In the shortest month of the year, I decided to rewatch Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017), prequels to the horror / sci-fi masterpiece from more than 30 years ago that we all are familiar with. Of course, I’m talking about Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979), a fascinating film that has become a true contemporary classic and a reference for multitude of filmmakers. Alien takes place in the future, during the voyage of the Nostromo, a commercial spaceship owned by the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. Sigourney Weaver (Galaxy Quest) plays Ripley, who with the rest of the crew will land on a desolate planet answering a distress call. It’s on the surface of this barren planet where they encounter a unique and strange alien life form. When the Nostromo leaves the planet, it’s carrying an additional passenger, an alien (the nightmarish look of the creature comes from artist H. R. Giger’s designs). The film is full of suspense, and once the creature is unleashed, one by one, John Hurt (Snowpiercer), Harry Dean Stanton, Ian Holm (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) and all the other members of the crew will be violently exterminated. Ripley’s courage and resourcefulness allows her to escape. But she is doomed to meet the Alien again. I’ve seen Alien before and it never ceases to amaze me. It’s a remarkable film where horror is present everywhere, outside and inside human bodies, in the never-ending violence of the alien as well as in the infinite greed of the corporation.

Alien: Romulus (2024), directed by Fede Alvarez, has been newly added to the Alien timeline. It takes place after the events from Alien (1979). The Weyland-Yutani Corporation managed to recover the body of the original Alien and started experimenting with it. Unbeknownst to this, Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla) joins Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn and other fugitives trying to escape to a different planet. For that, they must steal machinery from what seems to be an abandoned space station. They have no idea that this is the place where the alien experimentation was being conducted, before everyone involved in it died violently. Alien: Romulus plays well with the elements of the Alien saga and has brilliant sequences.

In James Cameron’s Aliens (1986), Sigourney Weaver reprised her role as Ripley, the sole survivor of the Nostromo. As she’s awakened from hibernation years in the future, she’s instructed to accompany a group of marines as an advisor. The Weyland-Yutani Corporation sends everyone to a planet where a human colony has been attacked by monstrous creatures. Upon arrival, Ripley immediately understands that she will be fighting against the same alien race she encountered before. Paul Reiser, the representative of the corporation, wants to capture an alien specimen, while Michael Biehn, the leader of the marines, wants to save whoever is still alive and incinerate everything else. Although hesitant to rely on Lance Henriksen, an android, eventually Ripley will need his help. Here we get to see the alien queen, a massive creature that lays the eggs that we had seen in the previous films. Some may have criticized it for having too much action, but I definitely enjoyed Cameron’s take. 

David Fincher directs Alien³ (1992), which in many ways is a return to the premise of the original Alien. Once again, Sigourney Weaver is Ripley, and she has landed on a maximum security prison. This time there is only one alien, but the problem is that inside the prison there are no weapons, except kitchen knives or metal bars. Charles Dance has a romantic connection with Ripley, and Lance Henriksen reappears as the android Bishop. Every Alien movie is about survival, is about fighting against impossible odds. And here everything boils down to the survival of a group of outcasts, the worst criminals our planet can offer, who nonetheless will fiercely cling to hope. Since there are no advanced weapons, Ripley must come out with a plan to destroy the alien before the creature kills everyone there. Avoiding spoilers, I will still say that I love the ending because of the sacrifice and courage of a woman who will do everything he can to go against the greed of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. Top notch performances by Sigourney Weaver and Charles Dance, and a back to basics approach that recaptures the suspense of the original film.

Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Alien Resurrection (1997) takes place two centuries after Alien³ and we get to see Ripley played by Sigourney Weaver again. Scientist Brad Dourif has found a way to clone Ripley’s bodies while preserving her memories and personality. However, this time she isn’t simply a woman, she is an alien/human hybrid, which will give her an edge once she starts fighting with the aliens that have just escaped the lab. During the battle, Ripley will work with a group of mercenaries Ron Perlman and android Winona Ryder (Celebrity). Now that Ripley is partly an alien, she has unique abilities and powers that make her more dangerous than ever before, however, the aliens have also adapted, and one of them in particular will take a grotesque humanoid form that will chase Ripley to the end. Jeunet adds his particular vision and reinterprets Alien in an uncanny and haunting way.
