May comics / cómics de mayo

After my trip to Lima, Perú, I returned to Davis, CA, just in time to read last month’s comics. I’m such a big fan of Darick Robertson that of course I had to pick up Batman Fortress # 1 and I must say it was captivating! I hadn’t read any Peter David comic in ages, and I really liked his New Fantastic Four! The conclusion of the Eternals was as good as I would’ve hoped. The Nice House on the Lake continues to be one of the most exciting titles out there, one I eagerly await for each month. DC Pride: Tim Drake Special was a complete surprise and definitely of the most endearing comics from DC that I’ve read in a long time... Robin finally comes out of the closet and starts exploring his sexuality. Hit Me was the most shocking comic I’ve read lately, the misadventures of a prostitute that caters uniquely to sadistic clients, for the right price you can hit her, and for extra fees, you can inflict as much damage as you want, brutal in a good way, if not for the technicality that this wasn’t strictly a May comic, I would choose it as the best one of the bunch. From the master of sequential narrative and artist extraordinaire, Geof Darrow, comes another fabulous Shaolin Cowboy miniseries, “Cruel to be Kin”, I absolutely enjoyed the first two issues, and I’d say that for best comic of the month it’s a tie between them and Milligan & Allred’s The X-Cellent #3 which was, simply put, excellent! And now without further ado, here are May comics, as per solicitations:

A SMALL KILLING

One of the classic Alan Moore works is finally back in print in this new full-color, magazine-size printing, with totally re-mastered artwork and lettering. Ad-man Timothy Hole has everything going for him, and has now been handed the biggest assignment of his life: marketing a major cola in Russia. But his smooth life begins to unravel as he is stalked by a demonic child that makes him question not just who he is, but how he really effects those around him. As an added bonus this graphic novel includes a new commentary article by both Alan Moore and the artist, Oscar Zarate.

Después de mi viaje a Lima, Perú, regresé a Davis, California, justo a tiempo para leer los cómics del mes pasado. Soy tan fanático de Darick Robertson que, por supuesto, tenía que leer Batman Fortress # 1 y debo decir que fue cautivador. No había leído ningún cómic de Peter David en mucho tiempo, ¡y me gustó mucho su New Fantastic Four! La conclusión de The Eternals fue tan buena como esperaba. The Nice House on the Lake sigue siendo uno de los títulos más emocionantes de la actualidad, uno que espero con ansias cada mes. DC Pride: Tim Drake Special fue una completa sorpresa y definitivamente uno de los cómics más entrañables de DC que he leído en mucho tiempo... Robin finalmente sale del closet y empieza a explorar su sexualidad. Hit Me fue el cómic más impactante que he leído últimamente, las desventuras de una prostituta que atiende únicamente a clientes sádicos, por el precio justo puedes golpearla y por tarifas adicionales, puedes infligir tanto daño como quieras, brutal en el buen sentido, si no fuera por el tecnicismo de que este no era estrictamente un cómic de mayo, lo elegiría como el mejor del grupo. Del maestro de la narrativa secuencial y artista extraordinario, Geof Darrow, llega otra fabulosa miniserie de Shaolin Cowboy, "Cruel to be Kin", disfruté tremendamente con estos dos primeros números, y para el mejor cómic del mes diría que es un empate entre ellos y The X-Cellent #3 de Milligan & Allred que fue, simplemente, ¡excelente! A SMALL KILLING

Una de las obras clásicas de Alan Moore finalmente vuelve a imprimirse en esta nueva impresión a todo color, tamaño revista, con ilustraciones y letras totalmente remasterizadas. Marvel # 6 - Ross, Darnall, Bermejo et al

It has taken me almost 2 years to finish reviewing the 6-issue miniseries aptly titled Marvel. Following an anthological format rarely seen these days in the Big Two, Marvel turned out to be a magnificent confluence of outstanding creators. Of course, to provide cohesiveness to the project, Alex Ross was in charge of all the covers plus the main story, the only one that continues from one issue to the next. In the 6th and last chapter, Alex Ross comes up with a striking cover that reunites the most important Marvel characters from the early 60s, and unlike other colorful covers, these one has only two tones that go really well together, a primary yellow and a green hue.

As usual, the “Overture” is the work of Alex Ross and Steve Darnall; once again, the cosmic confrontation between Doctor Strange and Nightmare is reaching its final stages. Now it’s time to either give up or muster the necessary strength to defeat Nightmare. In the conclusion of the story, we see many Marvel superheroes on the page, although this time instead of the magnificent and photorealistic art from Ross, what we see is the more cartoonish and simple lines of Mitch O’Connell.

The next story is “The One-Eyed Gambit”, written, illustrated and colored by Greg Smallwood. Here we get to see Nick Fury fighting against Advanced Idea Mechanics (A.I.M.) and most specifically against MODOK (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing). I really enjoyed the combination of pop art sensibility with 60s nostalgia in this charming story that rescues the most essential aspect of Nick Fury, id est, his super spy facet. There are of course some clever references to James Bond, including casinos, high stakes gambling and deformed villains, it all works together marvelously.

 

I have to say that before last year I simply had no idea who Greg Smallwood was, but I certainly enjoyed this short story and recently I have been very pleased with his artistic contributions to Tom King’s The Human Target (which I should be reviewing soon). Evidently, Smallwood has a unique style and he’s not afraid of delving into nostalgia or previous decades to find visually appealing aesthetics. Also, the fact that he pencils, inks and colors all of his works is admirable.

And at last but not least we have a very special story written and fully illustrated by Lee Bermejo. “The Silver Glint of Space” is also the only black and white story in the anthology, but Bermejo’s art is so detailed and visually striking, that color actually isn’t needed. In recent years Bermejo has become one of my favorite artists, and that is the reason why I’ve been buying as many of his comics as possible, even if sometimes I don’t like the writers he’s teamed up with.

“The Silver Glint of Space” is a post-apocalyptic story in which our planet is in ruins and the only living man is Johnny Storm, the Human Torch. He’s the only one present and it’s his duty to talk to the Silver Surfer, the herald of Galactus. It’s a bitter conversation but quite a revealing one. Bermejo proves to be not only an amazing artist but also a very competent writer. John Byrne was the first author to ever write a post-apocalyptic story in the X-Men with “Days of Future Past” and in Fantastic Four with “The Last Galactus Story”, in which Galactus’ herald visits a devastated Earth. In “The Silver Glint of Space” Galactus’ herald finds our world destroyed but at least he’s able to have a meaningful conversation with Johnny Storm. I wish we could see more projects like this, Marvel certainly was a marvelous anthology!

Me he demorado casi 2 años en terminar de reseñar la miniserie de 6 números acertadamente titulada Marvel. Siguiendo un formato antológico pocas veces visto estos días en las grandes editoriales, Marvel resultó ser una magnífica confluencia de destacados creadores. Por supuesto, para darle cohesión al proyecto, Alex Ross estuvo a cargo de todas las portadas más la historia principal, la única que continúa de un número a otro. En el sexto y último capítulo, Alex Ross presenta una llamativa portada que reúne a los personajes más importantes de Marvel de principios de los 60s, y a diferencia de otras coloridas portadas, esta tiene solo dos tonos que combinan muy bien, un amarillo primario y un tono verde

Como es habitual, la “Obertura” es obra de Alex Ross y Steve Darnall; una vez más, la confrontación cósmica entre Doctor Strange y Nightmare está llegando a sus etapas finales. Ahora es el momento de rendirse o reunir la fuerza necesaria para derrotar a Nightmare. En la conclusión de la historia, vemos muchos superhéroes de Marvel en la página, aunque esta vez en lugar del magnífico y fotorrealista arte de Ross, lo que vemos son las líneas más caricaturescas y simplonas de Mitch O'Connell.

La siguiente historia es “El gambito tuerto”, escrita, ilustrada y coloreada por Greg Smallwood. Aquí podemos ver a Nick Fury luchando contra Mecánica de Ideas Avanzadas (o A.I.M. por sus siglas en inglés) y más específicamente contra MODOK (Organismo Mental Diseñado Sólo para Matar por sus siglas en inglés). Disfruté mucho la combinación de la sensibilidad del arte pop con la nostalgia de los 60s en esta encantadora historia que rescata lo más esencial de Nick Fury, es decir, su faceta de súper espía. Por supuesto, hay algunas referencias ingeniosas a James Bond, incluidos los casinos, los juegos de azar de alto riesgo y los villanos deformes, todo funciona en conjunto maravillosamente.

Debo decir que antes del año pasado simplemente no tenía idea de quién era Greg Smallwood, pero ciertamente disfruté de esta historia corta y recientemente estoy muy complacido con sus contribuciones artísticas a The Human Target de Tom King (que debería reseñar pronto) . Evidentemente, Smallwood tiene un estilo único y no teme adentrarse en la nostalgia o en décadas anteriores para encontrar una estética visualmente atractiva. Y por último, pero no menos importante, tenemos una historia muy especial escrita y totalmente ilustrada por Lee Bermejo. “El destello de plata del espacio” también es la única historia en blanco y negro de la antología, pero el arte de Bermejo es tan detallado y visualmente impactante que el color en realidad no es necesario. En los últimos años Bermejo se ha convertido en uno de mis artistas favoritos, y esa es la razón por la que he estado comprando la mayor cantidad posible de sus cómics, aunque a veces no me gustan los escritores con los que se asocia.

 

“El destello de plata del espacio” es una historia post-apocalíptica en la que nuestro planeta está en ruinas y el único hombre vivo es Johnny Storm, la Antorcha Humana. Él es el único presente y es su deber hablar con Silver Surfer, el heraldo de Galactus. Es una conversación amarga pero bastante reveladora. Bermejo demuestra ser no sólo un artista asomobroso sino también un escritor muy competente. John Byrne fue el primer autor en escribir una historia post-apocalíptica en los X-Men con “Días del futuro pasado” y en Fantastic Four con "The Last Galactus Story", en la que el heraldo de Galactus visita una Tierra devastada. En “El destello de plata del espacio”, el heraldo de Galactus encuentra nuestro mundo destruido, pero al menos puede tener una conversación significativa con Johnny Storm. Ojalá pudiéramos ver más proyectos como este, ¡Marvel ciertamente fue una antología maravillosa!

May Films / películas de mayo

As I mentioned last month, I felt like I needed to watch all James Bond movies again, but I also had the chance to enjoy some new productions and Old too of course. Based on the graphic novel by Pierre-Oscar Lévy and Frederik Peeters Old (2021) marks a return to greatness for M. Night Shyamalan. When a family decides to spend their vacations in an exclusive resort in a paradisiac island, everything is happiness at the beginning, and then, in an isolated beach, something begins to happen. Shyamalan creates a rich and dense atmosphere, full of mystery, suspense and plenty of intense moments. The basic premise is quite scary: what would happen if you start aging rapidly? What would happen if a single day you become a decade older? Although at the beginning the family and other people at the beach can’t figure out what’s happening, they soon understand that if they don’t escape, they will end up dying of old age. There are no supernatural creatures here, no lurking evil, just the nature of our own bodies slowly decaying and becoming old, and I think that is a universal fear shared by everyone. The cast includes Gael García Bernal, Vicky Krieps and Rufus Sewell. This is definitely the best Shyamalan film in almost 20 years. I recommend it.

 

Although Nightmare Alley (2021) isn’t precisely one of the best Guillermo del Toro productions, it’s still quite solid and enjoyable. Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) works in an itinerant circus where he meets outcasts and people that have been rejected by society, it’s in this marginal place where he learns the tricks to pretend how to be the best mentalist ever. As he gains popularity he’s able to scam rich people, but his biggest mistake is to trust in psychiatrist Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), a cold and ruthless woman with her own agenda. In my opinion there are some plot holes and with the exception of Blanchett, I feel like most actors here don’t really have an opportunity to shine. I will say, however, that the ending was absolutely shocking and perhaps the one thing that redeems Nightmare Alley. The cast also includes Rooney Mara, Toni Collette (A Long Way Down), Willem Dafoe (4:44 Last Day on Earth), Ron Perlman and Richard Jenkins.

Josh Trank’s Chronicle (2012) is a different take on the classic superpower / superhero premise. Dane DeHaan (Valerian), Alex Russell and Michael B. Jordan are three teenagers who unexpectedly gain superpowers but, of course, instead of swearing to protect humankind and fight against supervillains, they do what comes natural to all teens: they waste their abilities on pranks and compete against each other to see who can fly faster or higher. The beginning of Trank’s movie has some really hilarious moments, but as time passes, this high school trio realizes that they cannot escape from their personal problems by using their powers. Soon, Dane DeHaan starts losing control and becomes a threat to others, but he cannot be stopped by his friends. There is really a lot about the dark side of power here, about feeling alienated and ostracized, and I’d say this is certainly an original and worthy approach to the classic superhero dilemma.

Martin Scorsese has always been a great filmmaker, but I think he’s incursion into the horror genre deserves more attention. Shutter Island (2010) is a film with an oppressive atmosphere, full of scary elements and unsettling moments, even from the first minutes we can sense that a storm is about to come. Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant) is a US Marshal who lands on an island with his partner Mark Ruffalo (The Normal Heart), who seems to be a very inexperienced officer. They’re there to investigate the escape of a mental patient in an institution that serves both as an asylum and as a prison for the criminally insane. The warden is Ben Kingsley, a renowned psychiatrist who claims to be interested in rehabilitating insane people. What follows is a build up in suspense, as the protagonist slowly uncovers clues about what might have happened to the fugitive patient and what is the real nature of this sinister place. The film has an impressive cinematography and fantastic music by composer Max Richter, and although I love pretty much everything about Shutter Island I must say that I was never too convinced about the ending. The cast also includes Max von Sydow and Michelle Williams (Marilyn). 

Casino Royale (2006), directed by Martin Campbell, is the debut of Daniel Craig (Skyfall) as James Bond. This reboot of the franchise has a more realistic approach compared to other classic 007 adventures and also follows more closely Ian Fleming’s novels than previous productions. James Bond must team up with Eva Green (Dark Shadows), while following the commands of Dame Judi Dench (Notes on a Scandal), his other allies include the always charming Giancarlo Giannini and CIA agent Jeffrey Wright. The main villain, Mads Mikkelsen, is participating in a high stakes poker game in an exclusive casino, and Bond must win that game at all costs. There is a lot of action, gunshots and fights in Casino Royale but also I feel like we get to know the character better than in other movies, and we understand his sadness when his love for Eva Green has no future.

Quantum of Solace (2008), directed by Marc Forster, is the second installment of the James Bond saga that brings back again Daniel Craig (Spectre) as the protagonist. This time, he will work alongside Olga Kurylenko to defeat the scheming and manipulative Mathieu Amalric, who’s trying to control natural resources in South America. Dame Judi Dench reprises her role as M and the character of Giancarlo Giannini dies here. I remember how much I hated to see this character die, since I’m a big fan of Giannini and maybe that’s why I didn’t really like this movie the first time I saw it, but I’ve certainly enjoyed it more this second time. Of course, the third one (and my personal favorite) is Skyfall, which I already reviewed 10 years ago.

Como mencioné el mes pasado, se me antojó ver todas las películas de James Bond pero también tuve la oportunidad de disfrutar con nuevas y viejas producciones. Basada en la novela gráfica de Pierre-Oscar Lévy y Frederik Peeters Old (2021) marca un regreso a la grandeza para M. Night Shyamalan. Cuando una familia decide pasar sus vacaciones en un exclusivo resort en una isla paradisíaca, todo es felicidad al principio, y luego, en una playa aislada, algo comienza a suceder. Shyamalan crea una atmósfera rica y densa, llena de misterio, suspenso y muchos momentos intensos. La premisa básica es bastante aterradora: ¿qué pasaría si comienzas a envejecer rápidamente? ¿Qué pasaría si un solo día te vuelves una década más viejo? Aunque al principio la familia y otras personas en la playa no pueden comprender lo que está pasando, pronto entienden que si no escapan, terminarán muriendo de viejos. Aquí no hay criaturas sobrenaturales, ni maldad al acecho, sólo la naturaleza de nuestros propios cuerpos decayendo lentamente y envejeciendo, y creo que ese es un miedo universal compartido por todos. El elenco incluye a Gael García Bernal, Vicky Krieps y Rufus Sewell. Esta es definitivamente la mejor película de Shyamalan en casi 20 años. La recomiendo.

 

Aunque Nightmare Alley (2021) no es precisamente una de las mejores producciones de Guillermo del Toro, sigue siendo bastante sólida y disfrutable. Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) trabaja en un circo ambulante donde se encuentra con marginados y personas que han sido rechazadas por la sociedad, es en este lugar marginal donde aprende los trucos para pretender ser el mejor mentalista de la historia. A medida que gana popularidad es capaz de estafar a los ricos, pero su mayor error es confiar en la psiquiatra Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), una mujer fría y despiadada con sus propios intereses. En mi opinión, hay algunos agujeros en la trama y, con la excepción de Blanchett, siento que la mayoría de los actores aquí realmente no tienen la oportunidad de brillar. Sin embargo, diré que el final fue absolutamente impactante y quizás lo único que redime a Nightmare Alley. El elenco también incluye a Rooney Mara, Toni Collette (A Long Way Down), Willem Dafoe (4:44 Last Day on Earth), Ron Perlman y Richard Jenkins.

Josh Trank's Chronicle (2012) es una versión diferente de la premisa clásica de superpoderes / superhéroes. Dane DeHaan (Valerian), Alex Russell y Michael B. Jordan son tres adolescentes que inesperadamente obtienen superpoderes pero, por supuesto, en lugar de jurar proteger a la humanidad y luchar contra supervillanos, hacen lo que es natural en todos los adolescentes: desperdician sus habilidades en bromas y compiten el uno contra el otro para ver quién puede volar más rápido o más alto. El comienzo de la película de Trank tiene algunos momentos realmente divertidos, pero a medida que pasa el tiempo, este trío de estudiantes de secundaria se da cuenta de que no pueden escapar de sus problemas personales usando sus poderes. Pronto, Dane DeHaan comienza a perder el control y se convierte en una amenaza para los demás, pero sus amigos no pueden detenerlo. Realmente hay mucho sobre el lado oscuro del poder aquí, sobre sentirse alienado y condenado al ostracismo, y diría que este es sin duda un enfoque original y digno del clásico dilema de los superhéroes.

Martin Scorsese siempre ha sido un gran cineasta, pero creo que su incursión en el género de terror merece más atención. Shutter Island  (2010) es una película con una atmósfera agobiante, llena de elementos aterradores y momentos inquietantes, incluso desde los primeros minutos podemos intuir que una tormenta está por llegar. Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant) es un alguacil estadounidense que aterriza en una isla con su compañero Mark Ruffalo (The Normal Heart), quien parece ser un oficial muy inexperto. Están allí para investigar la fuga de una paciente mental en una institución que sirve tanto como asilo como prisión para criminales dementes. El alcaide es Ben Kingsley, un psiquiatra de renombre que dice estar interesado en rehabilitar a los dementes. Lo que sigue es una acumulación de suspenso, a medida que el protagonista descubre lentamente pistas sobre lo que podría haberle sucedido a la paciente fugitiva y cuál es la verdadera naturaleza de este siniestro lugar. La película tiene una cinematografía impresionante y una música fantástica del compositor Max Richter, y aunque me encanta casi todo sobre Shutter Island, debo decir que nunca me convenció demasiado el final. El elenco también incluye a Max von Sydow y Michelle Williams (Marilyn).

Casino Royale (2006), dirigida por Martin Campbell, es el debut de Daniel Craig (Skyfall) como James Bond. Este reinicio de la franquicia tiene un enfoque más realista en comparación con otras aventuras clásicas del 007 y también sigue más de cerca las novelas de Ian Fleming que las producciones anteriores. James Bond debe formar equipo con Eva Green (Dark Shadows), mientras sigue las órdenes de Dame Judi Dench (Notes on a Scandal), sus otros aliados incluyen al siempre encantador Giancarlo Giannini y al agente de la CIA Jeffrey Wright. El villano principal, Mads Mikkelsen, participa en un juego de póquer de alto riesgo en un casino exclusivo, y Bond debe ganar ese juego a toda costa. Hay mucha acción, disparos y peleas en Casino Royale pero también siento que conocemos mejor al personaje que en otras películas, y entendemos su tristeza cuando su amor por Eva Green no tiene futuro.

Quantum of Solace (2008), dirigida por Marc Forster, es la segunda entrega de la saga de James Bond que vuelve a traer a Daniel Craig (Spectre) como protagonista. Esta vez, trabajará junto a Olga Kurylenko para derrotar al intrigante y manipulador Mathieu Amalric, que intenta controlar los recursos naturales en América del Sur. Dame Judi Dench repite su papel de M y el personaje de Giancarlo Giannini muere aquí. Recuerdo lo mucho que me disgustó ver morir a este personaje, ya que soy muy fan de Giannini y tal vez por eso no me gustó mucho esta película la primera vez que la vi, pero ciertamente la he disfrutado más esta segunda vez. Por supuesto, la tercera (y personalmente mi favorita) es Skyfall, que ya reseñé hace 10 años.
