February Comics / Cómics de febrero

I had the good fortune of reading amazing comics in February. Fantastic Four and One World Under Doom, both by Ryan North, exceeded my expectations. The Nice House by the Sea continues to be one of my favorite monthly titles. The art in Dust to Dust is absolutely impressive! DC Horror Presents, Mystique and Blood Squad Seven were quite entertaining. I’m still fascinated by Absolute Batman, Absolute Wonder Woman and especially Absolute Superman. Doctor Doom and Rocket Raccoon was fun. I very much enjoyed the Judge Dredd Megazine but if I have to choose my favorite comic of the month, that honor goes to Bug Wars #1, Jason Aaron and Mahmud Asrar have created a wonderful new title. And now, without further ado, here are February comics as per solicitations:

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #5

WILL THE PARTY END HERE FOR ABSOLUTE BATMAN? Tuve la buena fortuna de leer cómics asombrosos en febrero. Fantastic Four y One World Under Doom, ambos de Ryan North, superaron mis expectativas. The Nice House by the Sea sigue siendo uno de mis títulos mensuales favoritos. ¡El arte de Dust to Dust es absolutamente impresionante! DC Horror Presents, Mystique y Blood Squad Seven fueron bastante entretenidos. Aun sigo fascinado con Absolute Batman, Absolute Wonder Woman y especialmente Absolute Superman. Doctor Doom y Rocket Raccoon fue divertido. Disfruté muchísimo de la revista Judge Dredd, pero si tengo que elegir mi cómic favorito del mes, ese honor es para Bug Wars #1. In the shortest month of the year, I decided to rewatch Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017), prequels to the horror / sci-fi masterpiece from more than 30 years ago that we all are familiar with. Of course, I’m talking about Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979), a fascinating film that has become a true contemporary classic and a reference for multitude of filmmakers. Alien takes place in the future, during the voyage of the Nostromo, a commercial spaceship owned by the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. Sigourney Weaver (Galaxy Quest) plays Ripley, who with the rest of the crew will land on a desolate planet answering a distress call. It’s on the surface of this barren planet where they encounter a unique and strange alien life form. When the Nostromo leaves the planet, it’s carrying an additional passenger, an alien (the nightmarish look of the creature comes from artist H. R. Giger’s designs). The film is full of suspense, and once the creature is unleashed, one by one, John Hurt (Snowpiercer), Harry Dean Stanton, Ian Holm (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) and all the other members of the crew will be violently exterminated. Ripley’s courage and resourcefulness allows her to escape. But she is doomed to meet the Alien again. I’ve seen Alien before and it never ceases to amaze me. It’s a remarkable film where horror is present everywhere, outside and inside human bodies, in the never-ending violence of the alien as well as in the infinite greed of the corporation.

Alien: Romulus (2024), directed by Fede Alvarez, has been newly added to the Alien timeline. It takes place after the events from Alien (1979). The Weyland-Yutani Corporation managed to recover the body of the original Alien and started experimenting with it. Unbeknownst to this, Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla) joins Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn and other fugitives trying to escape to a different planet. For that, they must steal machinery from what seems to be an abandoned space station. They have no idea that this is the place where the alien experimentation was being conducted, before everyone involved in it died violently. Alien: Romulus plays well with the elements of the Alien saga and has brilliant sequences.

In James Cameron’s Aliens (1986), Sigourney Weaver reprised her role as Ripley, the sole survivor of the Nostromo. As she’s awakened from hibernation years in the future, she’s instructed to accompany a group of marines as an advisor. The Weyland-Yutani Corporation sends everyone to a planet where a human colony has been attacked by monstrous creatures. Upon arrival, Ripley immediately understands that she will be fighting against the same alien race she encountered before. Paul Reiser, the representative of the corporation, wants to capture an alien specimen, while Michael Biehn, the leader of the marines, wants to save whoever is still alive and incinerate everything else. Although hesitant to rely on Lance Henriksen, an android, eventually Ripley will need his help. Here we get to see the alien queen, a massive creature that lays the eggs that we had seen in the previous films. Some may have criticized it for having too much action, but I definitely enjoyed Cameron’s take. 

David Fincher directs Alien³ (1992), which in many ways is a return to the premise of the original Alien. Once again, Sigourney Weaver is Ripley, and she has landed on a maximum security prison. This time there is only one alien, but the problem is that inside the prison there are no weapons, except kitchen knives or metal bars. Charles Dance has a romantic connection with Ripley, and Lance Henriksen reappears as the android Bishop. Every Alien movie is about survival, is about fighting against impossible odds. And here everything boils down to the survival of a group of outcasts, the worst criminals our planet can offer, who nonetheless will fiercely cling to hope. Since there are no advanced weapons, Ripley must come out with a plan to destroy the alien before the creature kills everyone there. Avoiding spoilers, I will still say that I love the ending because of the sacrifice and courage of a woman who will do everything he can to go against the greed of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. Top notch performances by Sigourney Weaver and Charles Dance, and a back to basics approach that recaptures the suspense of the original film.

Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Alien Resurrection (1997) takes place two centuries after Alien³ and we get to see Ripley played by Sigourney Weaver again. Scientist Brad Dourif has found a way to clone Ripley’s bodies while preserving her memories and personality. However, this time she isn’t simply a woman, she is an alien/human hybrid, which will give her an edge once she starts fighting with the aliens that have just escaped the lab. During the battle, Ripley will work with a group of mercenaries Ron Perlman and android Winona Ryder (Celebrity). Now that Ripley is partly an alien, she has unique abilities and powers that make her more dangerous than ever before, however, the aliens have also adapted, and one of them in particular will take a grotesque humanoid form that will chase Ripley to the end. Jeunet adds his particular vision and reinterprets Alien in an uncanny and haunting way.

Para ello, deben robar maquinaria de lo que parece ser una estación espacial abandonada. Alien: Romulus combina a la perfección los elementos recurrentes de la saga Alien y cuenta con secuencias brillantes.

En Aliens (1986), de James Cameron, Sigourney Weaver repitió su papel de Ripley, la única superviviente del Nostromo. Tras despertar de su hibernación años en el futuro, recibe instrucciones de acompañar a un grupo de soldados como asesora. La Corporación Weyland-Yutani envía a todos a un planeta donde una colonia humana ha sido atacada por criaturas monstruosas. Al llegar, Ripley comprende de inmediato que luchará contra la misma raza alienígena con la que se topó antes. Paul Reiser, representante de la corporación, quiere capturar un espécimen alienígena, mientras que Michael Biehn, líder de los marines, quiere salvar a quienes aún estén vivos e incinerar todo lo demás. Aunque duda en confiar en Lance Henriksen, un androide, Ripley acabará necesitando su ayuda. Aquí vemos a la reina alien, una criatura enorme que pone los huevos que vimos en las películas anteriores. Algunos la criticaron por tener demasiada acción, pero sin duda disfruté de la interpretación de Cameron.

David Fincher dirige Alien³ (1992), que en muchos sentidos supone un retorno a la premisa del Alien original. Una vez más, Sigourney Weaver interpreta a Ripley, quien ha aterrizado en una prisión de máxima seguridad. Esta vez sólo hay un alien, pero el problema es que dentro de la prisión no hay armas, salvo cuchillos de cocina o barras de metal. Charles Dance tiene una conexión romántica con Ripley, y Lance Henriksen reaparece como el androide Bishop. Toda película de Alien trata sobre la supervivencia, sobre luchar contra todo pronóstico. Y aquí todo se reduce a la supervivencia de un grupo de marginados, los peores criminales que nuestro planeta puede ofrecer, quienes, sin embargo, se aferrarán ferozmente a la esperanza. Como no hay armas avanzadas, Ripley debe idear un plan para destruir al alienígena antes de que la criatura acabe con todos. El científico Brad Dourif ha descubierto la forma de clonar los cuerpos de Ripley, preservando sus recuerdos y personalidad. Sin embargo, esta vez ella no es simplemente una mujer, sino un híbrido alienígena y humano, lo que le dará una ventaja al enfrentarse a los aliens que acaban de escapar del laboratorio. Durante la batalla, Ripley colaborará con un grupo de mercenarios: Ron Perlman y la androide Winona Ryder (Celebrity). Ahora que Ripley es en parte alienígena, posee habilidades y poderes únicos que la hacen más peligrosa que nunca. Patrick 'Pat' Dilloway

My first post, every month, is about movies I’ve watched recently. After that, I will post about comics I’ve bought recently. I used to include at least a couple of comic book reviews every month (a decade ago it would be like a dozen reviews per month, talk about being prolific), but I’ve been so busy the last couple of years that now months go by without a single review. Still, I’ll talk about recent movies and comics. And constantly, invariably, Patrick ‘Pat’ Dilloway would post a comment on this blog. It’s been a decade of perseverance in a strange way that could only flourish thanks to an online friendship. Whenever I would post something for my blog, Pat would leave me a comment. Sometimes we would have entire conversations in the comments section. Always Pat’s comments. No matter the day or the time. He was always there. I guess I took it for granted. And ever since the beginning of 2025, Pat’s comments surreptitiously stopped. Now I have a bunch of posts in this blog with that dubious badge that says ‘Zero Comments’. I didn’t understand the reason for Pat’s silence, especially since he had given me all his support whenever one of my comics would come out. Pat bought all my comics on Comixology, and when Comixology disappeared he bought them again on Amazon Kindle. He also helped me promote my comics by advertising them on his own blog but also by reviewing them. And when I had my Kickstarter campaign in 2021, Pat was one of the first ones to contribute with a generous amount of money.

 

To say that Pat was one of my biggest fans would be an understatement, and I always appreciated his support especially since he was an accomplished writer with quite a few novels published. After a couple of months of complete silence, I started to get worried. And sure enough, my worst fear became true. Pat’s sister announced that my best online friend was no longer with us. And his funeral was being planned for January. This came as huge a shock for me. After 10 years of reading hundreds if not thousands of comments from Pat, suddenly there would be no more. That which I took for granted, would never be there again. But above all, I understood as soon as I read the bad news that sometimes people we know in real life don’t seem to care too much about us, and that’s why it was especially surprising to count with the generosity and kindness of a man I never met in person. Patrick. Pat. If there is a special online heaven reserved for you, I hope you’re there enjoying the virtual afterlife. I already miss you a lot

No entendía el motivo del silencio de Pat, sobre todo porque él me había apoyado incondicionalmente cada vez que salía uno de mis cómics. Pat compró todos mis cómics en Comixology, y cuando Comixology desapareció, los volvió a comprar en Amazon Kindle. También me ayudó a promocionarlos anunciándolos en su blog y también reseñándolos. Y cuando tuve mi campaña de Kickstarter en 2021, Pat fue uno de los primeros en contribuir con una generosa cantidad de dinero. 

Decir que Pat era uno de mis mayores fans sería quedarme corto, y siempre agradecí su apoyo, sobre todo porque era un escritor consumado con varias novelas publicadas. Tras un par de meses de silencio absoluto, empecé a preocuparme. Y, efectivamente, mi peor temor se hizo realidad. La hermana de Pat anunció que mi mejor amigo online ya no estaba con nosotros. Y su funeral se estaba planeando para enero. Esto fue una gran sorpresa para mí. Después de 10 años leyendo cientos, si no miles, de comentarios de Pat, de repente, ya no habría ninguno más. Lo que daba por sentado, ya no volvería. Pero sobre todo, entendí en cuanto leí la mala noticia que a veces la gente que conocemos en persona no parece preocuparse demasiado por nosotros, y por eso fue tan sorprendente contar con la generosidad y amabilidad de un hombre al que nunca conocí en persona. Patrick. Pat. Si hay un paraíso virtual especial reservado para ti, espero que estés allí disfrutando de la vida virtual. Ya te extraño tremendamente.
