May Comics / cómics de mayo

I guess, one way or another, we all celebrated Free Comic Book Day in May. However, unlike previous years, instead of my usual 5 FCBD books I only got 2 (shame on you, DCBS!). I got Archie, which was surprisingly good and 2000AD, which was extraordinary (I absolutely loved it). Marvel continues to do an outstanding job with monthly series like Silver Surfer and International Iron Man (I didn’t think I could enjoy Bendis and Maleev’s title so much). Of course, nothing could be better than the Uncanny X-Men Omnibus Vol. 1, almost 1000 pages of classic X-Men stories, mostly illustrated by John Byrne, one of my all-time favorite artists and the reason why I decided to get this gigantic book. Speaking of reprints, Gaiman and Zulli’s The Facts in the Case of the Departure of Miss Finch was also wonderful. Strange Fruit continues to be one of the best miniseries (and J.G. Jones art is top notch). Finally, there were two very interesting new series in May: the first issue of Renato Jones was aesthetically delightful but the best comic of the month would be Cinema Purgatorio #1, an impressive anthology that reunites authors such as Alan Moore, Garth Ennis, Kieron Gillen, Gabriel Andrade, Kevin O’Neil, Ignacio Calero, etc. And now, without further ado, here are May comics as per solicitations:

CINEMA PURGATORIO #1
(W) Alan Moore & Various (A) Kevin O'Neil & Various (CA) Gabriel Andrade. Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill invite you, and some of the finest creators in comics, in to join them in a different kind of dark: Cinema Purgatorio! This ongoing monthly series will feature Alan and Kevin in every issue and is their first major new project together since League of Extraordinary Gentlemen! Anthology has become a dirty word, so far be it from us to clean it up. Instead we'll shine our light onto the cutting edge of sequential art, with black and white artwork to allow illustrator's pure visions, and the greatest assembly of writing talent ever gathered on one series. Every issue is perfect-bound, with no ads, and all of the works are very long-form, there are no collections planned before 2018. Jump in now and embrace the new future of comics. The one of which Alan Moore has always dreamed. It's here, now. Hiding in the dark corner. Welcome to Cinema Purgatorio.

In collaboration with artists Dave Cockrum and John Byrne, Claremont crafted a run still heralded as a definitive era on the book. Hablando de reimpresiones, "The Facts in the Case of the Departure of Miss Finch" de Gaiman y Zulli fue también maravilloso.

Bienvenido a Cinema Purgatorio.

EMPRESS #2

FACTS IN THE CASE OF THE DEPARTURE OF MISS FINCH HC

FCBD 2016 2000 AD SPECIAL

INTERNATIONAL IRON MAN #2

INTERNATIONAL IRON MAN #3

JUDGE DREDD #1 IDW'S GREATEST HITS

RENATO JONES: THE ONE% #1

THE UNCANNY X-MEN OMNIBUS VOL. 1 HC
(W) Chris Claremont, Len Wein (A) John Byrne, Dave Cockrum (CA) Dave Cockrum, Gil Kane. Incluye X-MEN # 94-131 y ANNUAL # 3, y GIANT-SIZE X-MEN # 1.

May comic books / cómics de mayo

May is always one of my favorite months, and I think it is because I get free comics. I’m talking, of course, about Free Comic Book Day, and now, for third year in a row, my favorite was 2000AD, with 48 thrilling pages plus free digital comics, this certainly has been the most generous offering of the season. Another great FCBD title was Mercury Heat, I’ll certainly be reading the next issue in a month or so. And I loved Alex Ross cover for Secret Wars! Jupiter’s Circle continues to impress me, but perhaps the biggest surprise this time was All-New X-Men #40, an issue that made it into the headlines of every comic news website, the reason? Bobby Drake, AKA Iceman, founding member of the X-Men, admits that he’s gay, we owe this wonderful coming-out-of-the-closet issue to Brian Michael Bendis. Finally, the best issue of the month was Alan Moore’s Providence. And now, without further ado, here are May comics as per solicitations:

ALL-NEW X-MEN #40
BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS (W) MAHMUD ASRAR (A) ANDREA SORRENTINO (CA) Who are the Utopians? And what secret do they hold that pertains to the future of mutantkind? The All-New X-Men may regret finding out!

When the director of the FBI threatens to reveal his secret, Richard is forced to make an impossible decision, all while his team battles to keep the world safe.

PROVIDENCE #1 (of 12) (MR)
(W) Alan Moore (A/CA) Jacen Burrows. The most important work of 2015 begins here with the long-awaited arrival of Alan Moore's breathtaking epic PROVIDENCE with his artistic partner Jacen Burrows. In his most carefully considered work in decades, Moore deconstructs all of Lovecraft's concepts, reinventing the entirety of his work inside a painstakingly researched framework of American history. Both sequel and prequel to NEONOMICON, PROVIDENCE begins in 1919 and blends the mythical visions of HPL flawlessly into the cauldron of racial and sexual intolerance that defined that era on the East Coast of America. Every line from artist Jacen Burrows is perfectly honed to complete this immersive experience. The result is a breathtaking masterpiece of sequential art that will define modern horror for this generation. Invoking a comparison it to a prior literary masterpiece is not something to be handled lightly, but in scope, importance and execution: Providence is the Watchmen of horror. Moore has designed every cover, every single page, and every nuance of this work to create his most fully-realized vision to date. There are no ads, all 32 pages are written by Moore, and Jacen Burrows has spent the past two years slaving over the finest detail possible on the pages. The entire work is already written, intricately crafted to tie the most nuanced threads together over the breadth of the series. Painstakingly researched, meticulously produced, this is a sequential masterpiece that will serve as important a call to the next generation of comic book writers as Watchmen did 30 years ago: this is a definitive demonstration of just how good a comic book can be. Available with Regular, Pantheon, Portrait, Dreamscape Wraparound, Women of HPL, and a special Ancient Tome Incentive cover, all by collaborator Jacen Burrows.

SANDMAN OVERTURE #5 (MR)
(W) Neil Gaiman (A/CA) J. H. Williams. The fate of the entire universe hangs in the balance when Dream finally gets his mother's full attention. Magic, joy, war and heartbreak are brought to life on the pages with epic luminosity in the penultimate issue of THE SANDMAN: OVERTURE. Rated T Star Wars © Lucasfilm Ltd. & TM. All rights reserved. Used under authorization. Text and illustrations for Star Wars are © 2015 Lucasfilm Ltd.

STAR WARS #5
(W) Jason Aaron (A/CA) John Cassaday. • The Empire is rounding up fugitive Alderaanians... • ...that doesn't sit well with their Princess. • But what can one woman do against an Empire?

THE WICKED + THE DIVINE #10 (MR)
(W) Kieron Gillen (A/CA) Jamie McKelvie, Matthew Wilson. Ragnarock is finally here. The show to end all shows promises to be a lovely experience for all the gods... wait. Oh noes! Jamie and Matt have drawn Baphomet drenched in blood on the cover. What a hilarious internal communication error. I'm sure it's a mistake and nothing to do with the story whatsoever.

Get Comic Books for Free on May 5th!

On May 5, 2012 every comic book shop in the US will be celebrating Free Comic Book Day. And just like it happens every year, not only Marvel, DC, Image or Dark Horse make a special effort with their free books, but also several other publishers.

First we have ‘gold’ titles such as AVENGERS #12.1 (Marvel Comics), BONGO FREE-FOR-ALL / SPONGEBOB (Bongo), DC COMICS THE NEW 52 SPECIAL ED (DC Comics), IMAGE 20 (Image Comics), MEGA MAN, MOUSE GUARD LABYRINTH & MORE HC (Archaia), PEANUTS ADVENTURE TIME FLIPBOOK, STAR WARS SERENITY (Dark Horse), TRANSFORMERS #80.5 (IDW) & YO GABBA GABBA FREE COMIC BOOK TIME.

And then we have ‘silver’ titles such as 2000 AD JUDGE DREDD SPEC (Rebellion), ANIMAL PLANET WORLD MOST DANGEROUS ANIMALS, ANTARCTICS ZOMBIE KID, ANTI (12-Gauge Studios), ARCANA PRESENTS INTRINSIC (Arcana), ATOMIC ROBO & FRIENDS, BAD MEDICINE #1, BARNABY, BUFFY THE GUILD (Dark Horse), BURT WARD BOY WONDER, CENSORED HOWARD CRUSE, DC NATION SUPERMAN FAMILY FLIP BOOK (DC Comics), DINOSAURS VERSUS ALIENS, DUNE ORIGINS (Boom!), FINDING GOSSAMYR STUFF OF LEGEND, GRAPHIC ELVIS PREVIEW (Liquid Comics), INFERNAL DEVICES CLOCKWORK ANGEL, JURASSIC STRIKEFORCE 5, LADY DEATH THE BEGINNING (Avatar Press), MARBLE SEASON, MOOMIN COLOR SPECIAL, MUQTATAFAHT MIDDLE EAST COMICS ANTHOLOGY, MY FAVORITE MARTIAN SPECIAL EDITION, OVERSTREET COMIC BOOK MARKETPLACE (Overstreet), ROCKHEAD & ZINC ALLOY 2-FOR-NONE, SMURFS & DISNEY FAIRIES FEAT TINKER BELL, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG, SPIDER-MAN SEASON ONE (Marvel Comics), TOP SHELF KIDS CLUB (Top Shelf), UNDER THE FAERIE MOON (Radical Publishing), VALIANT PREVIEW, VOLTRON FORCE SHELTER FROM THE STORM, WALT DISNEYS DONALD DUCK FAMILY COMICS, WITCHBLADE UNBALANCED PIECES (Top Cow), WORLDS OF ASPEN (Aspen).

With so many promising free issues, every year I have a headache deciding what to get. Luckily for me, DCBS narrows down my decision to 5 titles. And since this is my fourth year in a row that I’m getting my FCBD freebies from them, I had to make a very careful selection: IMAGE 20 (a 20th anniversary anthology which I’m sure will be quite good), MOUSE GUARD LABYRINTH & MORE HC (a free 48 page hard cover graphic novel with original material), 2000 AD JUDGE DREDD SPEC (I’m huge fan of Judge Dredd, there’s no way I could skip this), GRAPHIC ELVIS PREVIEW (I know this one looks weird, but it has art by John Cassaday and, like I’ve said before, I’ll get anything with his name on it) and UNDER THE FAERIE MOON (with such a beautiful cover, how could I resist?). Other free comic books that didn’t make the cut but were close were Anti, Dune, Atomic Robo and the two Marvel titles.

If you happen to be in the US on May 5th, please do yourself a favor and visit as many comic shops as you can. And if you’re stuck somewhere else then, well, try to get a relative or a friend to do you a favor. After all, these are free comic books and we should never waste the chance to get something for free, right?

And, finally, I’m including a couple of my drawings which will appear in a comic anthology. Enjoy!

my sketch / mi boceto

Afortunadamente, DCBS reduce mi lista a 5 ejemplares.
my final version / mi versión final

Free Comic Book Day Lima ICPNA / FCBD 2011

Comic book conventions and Free Comic Book Days have always been activities that I would have considered unviable here in Lima, Peru. However, I’m glad to know that I can still get surprised. And indeed, today hundreds of Peruvian fans went to the first FCBD in Lima, an event organized by Peru21, and in this momentous occasion, they even prepared a very special FCBD edition, namely the Avengers special from FCBD 2009. As a curiosity I’m posting an image of the actual original issue (which I purchased through DCBS a couple of years ago) and the Peruvian edition. Do you notice any difference? I'm sure you do and I’m glad to see that production values have been high on this one, so that this South-American version can be slightly better than the US original.

I’ve also visited the Larco Herrera Museum. In the aptly named "erotic room" you can find the works of the Incas predecessors. This is quite a unique and absolutely astonishing work in ceramics that even after a few centuries still looks beautiful. Enjoy.
