July has been a month of celebrations. At some point between my birthday and my 300th post in the blog I managed to watch several movies. I’ll start with the ones that you have probably seen: The new Spider-Man movie had me slightly concerned a year ago. I thought a new origin story would feel redundant but after seeing The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) directed by Marc Webb I must admit that I loved it. It was necessary to tell the story again through Webb’s point of view and, unlike Sam Raimi, this new director creates a strong emotional link between the audience and the film characters. There are some truly touching moments and the story captures elements of the comic book that were absent or poorly presented in the previous Spider-Man productions. I’m a fan of Tobey Maguire, but Andrew Garfield is a more vibrant and more alive Peter Parker, he’s the shy scientist, the insecure teenager, everything that Stan Lee (who has a wonderfully fun part in the movie) and Steve Ditko developed in their books. Emma Stone (Gwen Stacy) and Rhys Ifans (Dr. Connors) are great, and I would also like to emphasize how sympathetic Flash Thompson is here, thanks not only to an admirable script but also to the histrionic qualities of Chris Zylka (famous for his role as Thor -a sexually ambiguous teenager- in Araki’s Kaboom). The Amazing Spider-Man far surpasses its predecessors. Dark Shadows (2012) may not be the best Tim Burton’s project, but it’s still a very funny story that made me laugh over and over again. Johnny Depp is a vampire that returns to his old town after being imprisoned for two centuries. Everything has changed in 200 years, but some things still remain intact. Michelle Pfeiffer and Eva Green are such great actresses, and this movie wouldn’t be the same without them. 

With The Conspirator (2010) Robert Redford denounces the American system of law, and more specifically the way in which people’s fear has more weight than the laws. When young attorney, James McAvoy is hired to defend Robin Wright (the mother of the conspirator responsible for the death of Abraham Lincoln), all hell breaks loose. Justin Long and Evan Rachel Wood give out some very solid performances too. Tom Hooper’s Longford (2006) is the story of Lord Longford, a man devoted to help others, even jail prisoners, until he meets a woman that has murdered children, and starts a dangerous relationship with this psychopath, a relationship that ultimately will destroy Lord Longford’s political career and reputation. 

John Hughes directed some of my favorite movies about teenagers and high school life, in Pretty in Pink (1986) he writes a very compelling story directed by Howard Deutch. It’s not the typical high school drama or the usual teen comedy. This is perhaps Molly Ringwald’s most memorable role. I really liked Pretty in Pink. Mini’s First Time (2006) is a somewhat risqué tale about a teenaged girl that has sex with her stepfather and then plots how to murder her own mother. It’s a bit of a black comedy and it has a terrific cast (Alec Baldwin, Jeff Goldblum, Carrie-Anne Moss, etc.). I love horror films but I hate bad sequels. And in the horror genre, most of the time, you get a second and sometimes even a third part. I had very low expectations about I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer (2006), but I have to say I enjoyed it a lot more than the previous movie. This was a great surprise, it builds upon the premise of a group of teenagers hiding the truth, and the guilt that eats at them. With a low budget and unknown actors, director Sylvain White does an outstanding work.

Judas Kiss (2011) is J.T. Tepnapa’s most ambitious film to date. Charlie David, a washed-up Hollywood writer returns to his old university to be the jury in the students film festival. There he meets teenager Richard Harmon, after having sex with him, the adult discovers unsettling things about the teen’s past. They both share the same writing talents, the same sexual orientation, the same family history and the same traumatic experience (being raped by their own fathers), is it possible this is just a coincidence or is there something much more disturbing going on? There are some really amazing moments here, and Tepnapa proves his ability as filmmaker. I recommend it. Pat Holden’s Awaydays (2009) is a British production very similar to Quadrophenia. Nicky Bell meets Liam Boyle, and together form a band of young men keen on vandalism and street fighting. Sex is also a very important part of the boys’ life, but what happens when the possibility of a homosexual romance arises? Who We Are (2010) is a short film about two gay boys that fall in love with each other in high school, one of them is out of the closet, the other is the son of a very religious and conservative man.

The gem of the month, without a doubt, is Dans Tom Sommeil (2010) a French film directed by Caroline du Potet & Éric du Potet. I was so impressed with “In their sleep” (English title) that I have decided to include it on my top 100 films. Anne Parillaud is a mother that has seen her own son die, and after running into Arthur Dupont, a teenager that reminds her of her deceased offspring, the nightmare begins. A man is trying to capture the boy and kill him, and she is in the middle of all of it. The sexual tension between the devastated mother and the smart teen is subtle but yet present, the homicidal rampage of the man is both scary and savage, suspense and horror are transformed into art; and as the film progresses, some mysteries are revealed and the conflicts are increased. This is an unforgettable story about psychopath killers. And I absolutely recommend it.

In a similar venue, American Translation (2011) focuses on a teenager with a very active sexual life. The problem is that after sex he always kills the other person. Pascal Arnold and Jean-Marc Barr had already produced the fascinating Chacun sa nuit, but this one is even better. Pierre Perrier is an attractive boy that meets Lizzie Brocheré (a half American, half French girl). They move in together but eventually, Lizzie discovers that Pierre has the insatiable need of killing his sexual partners. Like an omnivorous creature, Pierre has sex with boys and girls, and kills them all. He only makes an exception with Lizzie, but tragedy is inevitable.

Élève Libre (2008) directed by Joachim Lafosse is an extraordinary French film about an underage boy (interpreted by Jonas Bloquet) who experiences the disillusion of academic failure as well as the joy of his first sexual experience with his girlfriend. Due to his low grades, he is about to be expelled from high school and no university will accept him as a student, desperate to fix this, the kid accepts the help of a family friend: a mature man who lives alone. The man turns into his teacher, even his sexual mentor. But soon, heterosexual coitus will be disqualified by this manipulative man and they boy becomes a victim. Will he accept sexual abuse in order to graduate from high school? Does he enjoy being sodomized by this older man or does he hate it? Only French filmmakers are bright and brave enough to ask these questions, and it’s up to us to find an answer.

Homophobia (2012) is an Austrian short film directed by Gregor Schmidinger and starred by Michael Glantschnig. A teenager has joined the army but he gets constantly bullied. He is secretly in love with one of the soldiers in his unit, but after being humiliated he starts contemplating suicide. En forelskelse (2008) is a short film from Denmark, directed by Christian Tafdrup (d) and starred by Allan Hyde, when a young boy meets his girlfriend’s father something happens. He starts feeling attracted towards this older man. One afternoon, the boy and the man masturbate each other, unaware of the possible consequences.

I think the last Russian movie I saw was “Battleship Potemkin”, so when I came across Frantsuz (1988) I decided to see it. The film takes place in the Soviet Union, and it revolves around the life of two children, and their parents. There is poverty but there is also a strange sense of humor. Respiro (2002) is an Italian film about a boy growing up in small fishing town, and coming to terms with the fact that his mother is not a normal woman. Everyone in town hates her, but the boy loves her deeply. With an intense atmosphere, everything we see here feels real and honest. Crónica de un niño solo (1965) comes from Argentina, this a dramatic tale about a boy who has been sent to an orphanage, desperate due to the miserable conditions in which he has to live, he runs away. He heads for his neighborhood, in a marginal area of the city, will he be able to obtain freedom? Shot in black and white, this is a strong and courageous criticism of government politics in the 60s. Finally, I also saw Dinero fácil (2010), a short film from Spain about a young male prostitute that finds himself in the middle of an illegal transaction. Soon, a mercenary is pointing a gun to his head and all hope seems lost… unless the unexpected happens.

Julio ha sido un mes de celebraciones. Entre mi cumpleaños y mi post # 300, me las arreglé para ver varias películas. Empezaré con las que probablemente ya han visto: Hace un año pensaba que una nueva historia de origen sería redundante pero luego de ver "The Amazing Spider-Man" (2012) dirigida por Marc Webb debo admitir que me encantó. Era necesario contar la historia de nuevo desde el punto de vista de Webb y, a diferencia de Sam Raimi, este nuevo director crea un fuerte vínculo emocional entre los espectadores y los personajes de la película. Hay momentos realmente conmovedores y la historia captura elementos del cómic que estuvieron ausentes o pobremente presentados en las tres cintas previas. Soy fan de Tobey Maguire, pero Andrew Garfield es un Peter Parker más vibrante y vivo, es un científico tímido, un adolescente inseguro, todo lo que Stan Lee (quien tiene un momento maravillosamente divertido en la película) y Steve Ditko desarrollaron en el cómic. Emma Stone (Gwen Stacy) y Rhys Ifans (Dr. Connors) actúan estupendamente, y también me gustaría enfatizar la simpatía de Flash Thompson, resultado no sólo de un gran guión sino también de las dotes histriónicas de Chris Zylka (famoso por su rol como Thor -un adolescente sexualmente ambiguo- en Kaboom de Araki). "The Amazing Spider-Man" sobrepasa de lejos a sus predecesoras. "Dark Shadows" (2012) quizá no sea el mejor proyecto de Tim Burton pero es una historia muy chistosa que me hizo reír una y otra vez. Johnny Depp es un vampiro que regresa a su hogar después de dos siglos. Todo ha cambiado en 200 años aunque algunas cosas se mantienen igual. Sin las geniales actrices Michelle Pfeiffer y Eva Green esta película no sería la misma.

Justin Long y Evan Rachel Wood actúan muy bien. “Longford” (2006) de  Tom Hooper es la historia de Lord Longford un filántropo que ayuda incluso a los que están en la cárcel, hasta que conoce a una mujer que ha asesinado niños, y empieza una peligrosa relación con esta psicópata, una relación que finalmente destruirá la carrera política de Lord Longford y su reputación.

John Hughes dirigió algunas de mis películas favoritas sobre adolescentes y la vida en la secundaria, en "Pretty in Pink" (1986) él escribe un cautivador relato dirigido por Howard Deutch. Este no es el usual drama colegial o la comida juvenil típica. Es tal vez el rol más memorable de Molly Ringwald. Realmente me gustó "Pretty in Pink". "Mini’s First Time" (2006) es una narración algo subida de tono sobre una chica que tiene sexo con su padrastro y luego planea cómo asesinar a su propia madre. Es una comedia negra con un tremendo elenco (Alec Baldwin, Jeff Goldblum, Carrie-Anne Moss, etc.). Me encantan las películas de terror, pero odio las malas secuelas. Y en el género del terror, la mayor parte del tiempo, hay segundas y terceras partes. Tenía muy bajas expectativas sobre "I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer" (2006), pero tengo que decir que me gustó mucho más que la cinta anterior. Ha sido una grata sorpresa bajo la misma premisa de un grupo de jovencitos que esconden la verdad y son carcomidos por la culpa. Con un bajo presupuesto y actores desconocidos, el director Sylvain White logra algo admirable.

"Judas Kiss" (2011) es, a la fecha, el film más ambicioso de J.T. Tepnapa. Charlie David, un escritor de Hollywood fracasado regresa a su antigua universidad para ser el jurado en el festival fílmico estudiantil. Allí, conoce al adolescente Richard Harmon, luego de tener sexo, el adulto descubre extrañas cosas sobre el pasado del jovencito. Ambos tienen el mismo talento como escritores, la misma orientación sexual, la misma historia familiar y la misma experiencia traumática (ser violados por sus propios padres), ¿es posible que sea una coincidencia o se trata de algo mucho más perturbador? Hay momentos realmente asombrosos, y Tepnapa demuestra su habilidad como cineasta. La recomiendo. "Awaydays" (2009) de Pat Holden es una producción británica similar a Quadrophenia. Nicky Bell conoce a Liam Boyle, y juntos forman parte de una pandilla de jóvenes dedicados al vandalismo y a las peleas callejeras. El sexo es una parte muy importante en la vida de estos muchachos, pero ¿qué sucederá cuando se presente la posibilidad de un romance homosexual? "Who We Are" (2010) es un cortometraje sobre dos chiquillos que se enamoran en el colegio, uno de ellos está fuera del closet, y el otro es el hijo de un religioso ultra conservador.

La joya del mes, sin duda, es "Dans Tom Sommeil" (2010) un film francés dirigido por Caroline du Potet & Éric du Potet. Quedé tan impresionado con "Mientras duermen" que he decidido incluirla en mi top 100.  Anne Parillaud es una madre que ha visto morir a su propio hijo, y luego de tropezarse con Arthur Dupont, un adolescente que le recuerda a su fallecido vástago, la pesadilla empieza. Un hombre intenta capturar al muchacho y matarlo, y ella está en el medio. La tensión sexual entre la madre devastada y el astuto jovencito es sutil pero muy presente, el estallido homicida del hombre es temible y salvaje, el suspenso y el terror se transforman en arte; conforme el film avanza, algunos misterios son revelados y los conflictos se incrementan. Esta es una inolvidable historia sobre asesinos psicópatas. La recomiendo a todos.

De modo similar, "American Translation" (2011) se enfoca en un adolescente con una vida sexual muy activa. El problema es que después del sexo siempre asesina a la otra persona. Pascal Arnold y Jean-Marc Barr ya habían producido la fascinante "Chacun sa nuit", pero esta es incluso mejor. Pierre Perrier es un atractivo chico que conoce a Lizzie Brocheré (mitad norteamericana, mitad francesa). Se mudan juntos pero eventualmente Lizzie descubre que Pierre tiene una insaciable necesidad de matar a sus partenaires sexuales. Como una criatura omnívora, Pierre tiene sexo con muchachos y chicas, y los mata a todos. Sólo hace una excepción con Lizzie, pero la tragedia es inevitable. 

"Élève Libre" (2008) dirigido por Joachim Lafosse es un extraordinario film francés sobre un chaval menor de edad (interpretado por Jonas Bloquet) que experimenta la desilusión del fracaso académico así como el goce de su primera experiencia sexual con su enamorada. A causa de sus bajas notas, está a punto de ser expulsado de la secundaria, y ninguna universidad lo aceptará como estudiante, desesperado por solucionar esto el chiquillo acude a un amigo de la familia, un solterón. El hombre es su profesor, incluso su mentor sexual. Pero pronto, el coito heterosexual será descalificado por este hombre manipulador, y el chico es victimizado. ¿Aceptará el abuso sexual con tal de graduarse del colegio? ¿Disfruta siendo sodomizado por un hombre mayor o lo odia? Sólo los cineastas franceses tienen la valentía y la astucia como para hacer estas preguntas, depende de nosotros hallar una respuesta. "Homophobia" (2012) es un cortometraje austríaco de Gregor Schmidinger y protagonizado por Michael Glantschnig. Un adolescente se ha unido al ejército pero es constantemente maltratado. Está secretamente enamorado de otro soldado de su unidad pero luego de ser humillado empieza a pensar en el suicidio.  "En forelskelse" (2008) es un cortometraje de Dinamarca, dirigido por Christian Tafdrup y protagonizado por Allan Hyde, cuando un jovencito conoce al padre de su enamorada algo cambia. Empieza a sentirse atraído por este adulto. Una tarde, el chico y el hombre se masturban el uno al otro, sin pensar en las posibles consecuencias.
  
Creo que la última película rusa que vi fue "El acorazado Potemkin", así que cuando encontré "Frantsuz" (1988) decidí verla. La cinta ocurre en la Unión Soviética, y narra la vida de dos niños y sus padres. Hay pobreza pero también un extraño sentido del humor. "Respiro" (2002) es una película italiana sobre un chiquillo en un pequeño pueblo pesquero que debe lidiar con el hecho de que su madre no es una mujer normal. Todos en el pueblo la odian, pero el chico la ama profundamente. Con una atmósfera intensa, todo aquí se siente verdadero y honesto. "Crónica de un niño solo" (1965) viene de Argentina, este es un dramático relato sobre un niño que ha sido enviado a un orfanato, desesperado a causa de las condiciones miserables en las que vive, escapa. Se dirige a su barrio, en una zona marginal, ¿obtendrá allí la libertad? Filmada en blanco y negro, esta es una crítica con fuerza y coraje sobre la política gubernamental de los 60s. Finalmente, también vi "Dinero fácil" (2010), un cortometraje español sobre un joven prostituto que cae en medio de una transacción ilegal. Cuando un sicario está a punto de dispararle, la esperanza se pierde... a menos que lo inesperado suceda.

Films (February '12) / Películas (febrero)

February was the month of love and also the month of the Academy Awards. As I have mentioned before, I’m not precisely a fan of St. Valentine’s Day, so instead of choosing romantic films I decided to do exactly the opposite… what is the opposite of romance? There are several possible answers, but prostitution is one of them. And besides films about prostitution I have decided to include my fair share of nominated films (oh yes, I’ve been going to the movies quite often).

Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar (2011) is a magnificent portrait of J. Edgar Hoover, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) for decades. The thing that fascinated me the most was the treatment of power and sexuality; Hoover, arguably the most powerful man in America, had to constantly hide his homosexuality in a time of severe intolerance; humanized by the presence of his male lover (Armie Hammer), Eastwood gives a complex representation of a man that everyone loved or hated back then (Leonardo DiCaprio is great here). George Clooney’s The Ides of March (2011) deals with the difficult subject of politics; when a Democrat candidate in the primaries goes against his opponent all the electoral foul play is made evident. Once again, Ryan Gosling gives an astounding performance, not only is he a great actor but he also has a keen eye for intelligent projects; another actress who has only worked with the best directors is Evan Rachel Woods, who has a very interesting role here. 

I have to admit I haven’t read Stieg Larsson's international best-selling thriller, but I still went to see The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) by David Fincher. Fincher is one of those directors that has rarely let me down, and in this occasion he brings his A game into this adaptation. There are strong scenes but the most terrifying aspect of this production is the psychologically disturbed individuals that remind us too well of the ferocity and savageness hidden behind the smile of civilization. I admire director Stephen Daldry, and I have included two of his films in my very demanding top 10. I consider him one of the best directors alive, and he proves why he’s so great with Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (2011); some people have complaint about the excessive sentimentality of the story, but they should blame the novel, not the filmmaker. Daldry creates a visually stunning film, with an amazingly talented set of actors (Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Max Von Sydow), although I’d like to emphasize the enormous talent of the protagonist, a child who will surely surprise us in his future endeavors: Thomas Horn. It’s kind of hard for me to have a totally neutral approach toward Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, not only because Daldry is one of my idols, but also because I was in Manhattan in 2000, one year before September 11. I actually visited the twin towers, I took pics, I even held a camcorder… and then, a year later, when I saw on the news the destruction of the World Trade Center I was simply in shock. Watching the movie I experienced the same emotion. Ten years. And every time I see the image of the Twin Towers falling down I feel bludgeoned…
 
Steven Spielberg’s War Horse (2011) is a thorough reconstruction of War World I, and the original aspect here it’s that the leit motif is a horse. As teenager Jeremy Irvine raises a beautiful horse, a special connection is developed between the boy and the animal. The horse will eventually be caught up in the war, used by English and German soldiers, and this allows Spielberg to give us a tour de force through all sides of the conflict. The casting is great, and it includes young actors such as David Kross, famous for his role in Stephen Daldry’s The Reader. I also watched Children of the Corn 666: Isaac’s Return (1999), which was really bad, it’s because of movies like this that so many people consider horror as an irrelevant genre.

And in an entirely different front, I saw Bent (1997), directed by Sean Mathias. This is a heartbreaking story about two homosexuals trapped in a concentration camp during WWII. Most movies focus on Jews, but people often forget that besides the yellow star (Jews) there was also the pink triangle (homosexuals), a distinctive used by the Nazis to differentiate what kind of prisoner they had. Lothaire Bluteau and Clive Owen are fantastic in their roles, and there are some really powerful scenes. Can love exist in the worst kind of hell ever created by men? The answer is ‘yes’, although a very different kind of love. Happiness (1998), directed by Todd Solondz is a very unique take on depravity and sexual perversion. A group of seemingly miserable and totally unhappy characters have to deal with their lives as best as they can. Philip Seymour Hoffmann is a chronic masturbator who calls women randomly and jerks off while listening to any and all female voices, unable to establish a real contact with the opposite sex. A prestigious psychoanalyst rapes his son’s friends, 11-year-old boys that could hardly suspect his true intentions or let alone defend themselves... The level of unhappiness depicted since the opening scene is tremendous, and yet, it’s so very real.

Joseph Graham’s Strapped (2010) is a very powerful film about male prostitution and the elusive nature of love. As a young prostitute played by Ben Bonenfant tries to find his way out of an ominous building, he keeps getting sidetracked by the constant solicitations of men. He has sex over and over again, with old men, young men, straight men, etc., and every time he tries to get out of the building something sexual happens... Strapped works as a magnificent metaphor of how a prostitute -male or female- is often trapped in a structure that cannot be avoided; at the same time, when the hustler meets the love of his life, he treats this boy as a regular customer. I really, really enjoyed Graham’s work. Wiktor Grodecki’s Mandragora (1997), is a visceral and untamed analysis of child prostitution in Prague. When a 15 year-old boy runs away from home, he quickly falls in the hands of an abusive man that exploits him sexually. The boy is raped and then sold to old men as if he were a slave, until he makes an alliance with another hustler. At first, they seem to have reclaimed their independency although they both have AIDS, however a life of prostitution and drug addiction soon takes its toll on these underage boys. There are some really brutal scenes here (especially when the boy’s father spends weeks looking for his son and discovers an underground world in which children of ages from 11 to 13 are willing to do anything for a few coins). And the most shocking part? It’s based on real life events.
 
Ma saison super 8 (2005), directed by Alessandro Avellis, begins with the revolutionary events of May 1968, focusing on the sexual liberation that everyone was talking about back then. When a college student falls in love with a proletarian boy, he understands that there is no such thing as true freedom in France. A skillful director and good actors turns this into a valuable cinematographic alternative. Antony Cordier’s Douches froides (2005) delves into the world of teenagers and the age of hormonal changes and sexual confusion. Johan Libéreau (who is no stranger to gay themed productions such as Les Temoins), is a high school student and a judo champion that befriends a rich kid, Pierre Perrier (one of the protagonists of Chacun sa nuit), and as they become more intimate certain barriers begin to disappear. They have a threesome with a girl, but confused by their feelings they don’t know how to react afterwards. Does sex change everything? Sometimes it sure does.

Jean Delannoy’s Les amitiés particulières (1964) is an adaptation of Roger Peyrefitte’s novel. In a French boarding school, a 17 year-old boy falls deeply in love with an 11 year-old student. The two kids start talking to each other innocently, at first, but soon the older boy realizes he can no longer be satisfied with the sexual encounters he might have with guys his age. As this particular friendship progresses one of the priests -a closeted homosexual- discovers what’s going on, and then tragedy ensues. Delannoy creates a very meaningful relationship, this is a film with spirit, a quality that would seem fitting only for directors like Bresson. Lieve Jongens (1980) is a German production based on Gerard Reve’s novel, here, a mature writer tries to seduce a young man who prostitutes himself regularly; he’s not only after sex, he also covets something else. As he shares his perverse fantasies, his sadomasochistic scenarios and his depraved fetishism, the boy decides to run away, but can he truly go back to a life of prostitution? Luksus (2008) is also a cruel tale about child prostitution in Warsaw. A pimp considers that his 16 year-old boy is ‘too old’ for the job, and forces the kid to find a more suitable victim. When the youngster finds an 11 year-old boy willing to prostitute himself for food, he begins to have second doubts. Will he surrender this boy to a merciless life of sexual explotation?

I also found several short films about the dynamics of paying for (gay) sex: Boy is a story about an underage male prostitute in New Zealand, who happens to be the unwilling witness to a crime. Accusing the criminal means to admit to everyone that he regularly has sex with older men in public bathrooms. Will he have the courage to report the crime? Into the Night is a fantastic short film about a 15 year-old boy who has to earn enough money for him and a younger child he’s protecting, that means getting in the car of the first man who looks at him with lust. In Rock Bottom, a teenager agrees to have sex with a fat, old man. However, the night is full of surprises. Other interesting short films about male prostitution are Gigolo (about a French hustler), Gold (about an old artist who tries to reeducate a hustler) and Build (a guy who drops out of college and needs money desperately).

Because not everything can be about hustlers and pimps, I also watched Boys Grammar (2005), directed by Dean Francis. This is a very intense story about a high school boy that gets raped by other students in broad daylight. Abused by the strong and the popular he has no other choice but to walk home, and when he gets there, he discovers his father is having dinner with an old friend and his son, the boy who sodomized him. Can he act calmly during dinner or will he lose control and try to hit his abuser? I also watched Heartland and Blue which were a bit of a letdown. All in all, February was a good month for the 7th art, don’t you agree?

Febrero fue el mes del amor y también el mes de los premios de la academia. Como he mencionado antes, no soy precisamente un fan del día de los enamorados, así que en lugar de elegir cintas románticas decidí hacer lo opuesto. ¿Y qué es lo opuesto del romance? Yo diría que la prostitución. Así que además de películas que tocan este tema también he incluido unas cuantas de las nominadas (sí, he estado yendo al cine con mucha frecuencia).

"J. Edgar" (2011) de Clint Eastwood es un magnífico retrato de J. Edgar Hoover, director del FBI por décadas. Lo que más me fascinó fue el tratamiento del poder y la sexualidad; Hoover, quizá el hombre más poderoso en Estados Unidos, tuvo que ocultar siempre su homosexualidad en una época de represión e intolerancia; humanizado por la presencia de su amante masculino (Armie Hammer), Eastwood entrega una compleja representación del hombre que todos amaban u odiaban (Leonardo DiCaprio está genial). "The Ides of March" (2011) de George Clooney aborda el difícil tema de la política; cuando un candidato demócrata en las elecciones primarias se enfrenta a su oponente, todos los trapos sucios salen al aire. Nuevamente, la actuación de Ryan Gosling es extraordinaria, él no sólo es un gran actor sino también alguien que siempre elige proyectos inteligentes; otra actriz que sólo trabaja con los mejores directores es Evan Rachel Woods, que tiene un interesante rol aquí.

Debo admitir que no he leído el éxito internacional de Stieg Larsson, pero igual fui a ver "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" (2011) de David Fincher. Fincher es uno de esos directores que rara vez me ha decepcionado, y en esta ocasión hace un gran trabajo al adaptar la novela. Hay escenas fuertes pero el aspecto más terrorífico de esta producción son los individuos psicológicamente perturbados que nos recuerdan muy bien la ferocidad y salvajismo que se esconden detrás de la sonrisa de la civilización. Admiro al director Stephen Daldry, y he incluido dos de sus películas en mi exigente top 10. Lo considero uno de los mejores directores actuales, y en "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" (2011) demuestra su talento; algunas personas se han quejado del sentimentalismo de la historia, pero deberían culpar a la novela y no al cineasta. Daldry crea un film visualmente atrayente, con un grupo de actores talentosos (Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Max Von Sydow), aunque me gustaría enfatizar el enorme talento del protagonista, un niño que seguro nos sorprenderá en el futuro: Thomas Horn. Es difícil para mí permanecer neutral con Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, no sólo porque Daldry es uno de mis ídolos, sino porque yo estuve en Manhattan el 2000, un año antes del 11 de setiembre. De hecho, visité las torres gemelas, tomé fotos, filmé con mi camarita... y luego, un año después, cuando vi en las noticias la destrucción del World Trade Center me quedé en shock. Al mirar la película experimenté la misma emoción. Diez años. Y cada vez que veo la imagen de las torres siendo destruidas me siento golpeado...
 
"War Horse" (2011) de Steven Spielberg es una cuidadosa reconstrucción de la primera guerra mundial, y lo original es que el leit motif es un caballo. Cuando Jeremy Irvine, un adolescente, cría a un hermoso caballo, una conexión especial se desarrolla entre ambos. El caballo terminará en el campo de batalla, utilizado por ingleses y alemanes, y esto le permite a Spielberg meternos en los dos lados del conflicto. El elenco es espléndido, e incluye a jóvenes actores como David Kross, famoso por su rol en "The Reader" de Stephen Daldry. También vi "Children of the Corn 666: Isaac’s Return" (1999), tan mala que al verla uno entiende por qué a tantas personas el género de terror les resulta irrelevante.

Y ya con otra temática, vi "Bent" (1997), dirigida por Sean Mathias. Esta es una desoladora historia sobre dos homosexuales atrapados en un campo de concentración en la segunda guerra mundial. La mayoría de producciones se centra en los judíos, pero la gente olvida a menudo que además de la estrella amarilla (judíos) también estaba el triángulo rosado (homosexuales), un distintivo usado por los nazis para diferenciar a sus prisioneros. Lothaire Bluteau y Clive Owen están fantásticos en sus papeles, y hay escenas realmente poderosas. ¿Hay lugar para el amor en el peor infierno creado por los hombres? La respuesta es 'sí', aunque un tipo de amor muy diferente. "Happiness" (1998), dirigida por Todd Solondz es un singular análisis de la depravación y la perversión sexual. Un grupo de personajes miserables e infelices deben lidiar con sus vidas como pueden. Philip Seymour Hoffmann es un masturbador crónico que llama a mujeres al azar y se masturba al escuchar voces femeninas, incapaz de establecer un contacto real con el sexo opuesto. Un prestigioso psicoanalista viola a los amigos de su hijo, niños de 11 años que difícilmente podrían sospechar cuáles son sus intenciones y menos aún defenderse a sí mismos... el nivel de infelicidad mostrado desde la escena inicial es tremendo, y sin embargo, muy real.

"Strapped" (2010) de Joseph Graham es un poderoso film sobre la prostitución masculina y la elusiva naturaleza del amor. Cuando un joven prostituto interpretado por Ben Bonenfant trata de encontrar la salida de un ominoso edificio, es distraído constantemente por nuevos clientes. Una y otra vez tiene sexo con jóvenes, viejos, heterosexuales, etc., y cada vez que intenta salir algo sexual pasa... "Strapped" funciona como una magnífica metáfora de cómo la prostitución -en hombres o mujeres- a menudo significa una estructura de la que no se puede escapar; al mismo tiempo, cuando el prostituto encuentra al amor de su vida lo trata como a un cliente cualquiera. Realmente disfruté con la propuesta de Graham. "Mandragora" (1997) de Wiktor Grodecki, es un desenfrenado y visceral análisis de la prostitución infantil en Praga. Cuando un chaval de 15 años huye de casa, cae rápidamente en las manos de un proxeneta. El muchacho es violado y luego vendido a hombres mayores como si fuera un esclavo, hasta que establece una alianza con otro prostituto. Al inicio, parecen haber reclamado su independencia aunque ambos tienen SIDA, sin embargo, una vida de prostitución y drogadicción causa estragos en estos dos menores de edad. Hay algunas escenas brutales (especialmente cuando el padre del chicho busca a su hijo y descubre un mundo subterráneo en el que niños de 11 o 13 años están dispuestos a hacer lo que sea por unas cuantas monedas). ¿Lo más impactante? Está basada en eventos de la vida real.
 
"Ma saison super 8" (2005), dirigida por Alessandro Avellis, empieza con los revolucionarios eventos de mayo de 1968, enfocándose en la liberación sexual de la que todos hablaban en ese entonces. Cuando un estudiante universitario se enamora de un muchacho proletario, entiende que la libertad verdadera no existe en Francia. Un hábil director y buenas actuaciones la convierten en una valiosa alternativa cinematográfica. "Douches froides" (2005) de Antony Cordier indaga en el mundo de los adolescentes y en la edad de los cambios hormonales y la confusión sexual. Johan Libéreau (quien ha participado en otras producciones de temática gay como "Les Temoins"), es un estudiante de secundaria y campeón de judo que se hace amigo de un chico rico, Pierre Perrier (uno de los protagonistas de "Chacun sa nuit"), con la intimidad, ciertas barreras desaparecen. Tienen un trío con una chica, pero confundidos por sus sentimientos no saben cómo reaccionar después. ¿El sexo lo cambia todo? A veces sí.

"Les amitiés particulières" (1964) de Jean Delannoy es la adaptación de la novela de Roger Peyrefitte. En un internado francés, un adolescente de 17 años se enamora de un estudiante de 11. Al principio, los dos chicos conversan inocentemente pero pronto el mayor se da cuenta que no puede satisfacerse con los encuentros sexuales que podría tener con jóvenes de su edad. Conforme progresa esta amistad particular, uno de los curas -un homosexual reprimido- descubre lo que sucede, y luego sobreviene la tragedia. Delannoy crea una relación de gran significado, este es un film con espíritu, una cualidad que parecería ser sólo de directores como Bresson. "Lieve Jongens" (1980) es una producción alemana basada en la novela de Gerard Reve, aquí, un escritor maduro seduce a un joven que se prostituye con frecuencia, él no sólo busca sexo, también desea algo más. Al compartir sus perversas fantasías, sus escenarios sadomasoquistas, su fetichismo depravado, el chico decide huir, ¿pero podrá regresar a una vida de prostitución? "Luksus" (2008) es también una cruel historia sobre la prostitución infantil en Varsovia. Un proxeneta considera que su chico de 16 años es 'demasiado viejo' para el trabajo, y lo obliga a buscar una víctima más apropiada. Cuando el jovencito encuentra a un niño de 11 años dispuesto a vender su cuerpo a cambio de comida, empieza a dudar. ¿Condenará al chiquillo a una despiadada vida de explotación sexual?

También encontré diversos cortometrajes que desarrollan el tema de pagar por el sexo (gay): "Boy" es una historia sobre un prostituto menor de edad en Nueva Zelandia, que es testigo involuntario de un crimen. No obstante, acusar al criminal significa admitir que tiene sexo regularmente con hombres mayores en los baños públicos. "Into the Night" es un fantástico cortometraje sobre un chico de 15 años que tiene que ganar suficiente dinero para él y para un niño al que está protegiendo, y eso significa subirse al carro del primer hombre que lo mire con lujuria. En "Rock Bottom", un adolescente accede a tener sexo con un hombre viejo y gordo. Sin embargo, la noche traerá más de una sorpresa. Otros cortometrajes interesantes sobre la prostitución masculina son "Gigolo" (sobre un prostituto francés), "Gold" (sobre un artista que intenta reeducar a un prostituto) y "Build" (un chico que se sale de la universidad y necesita dinero desesperadamente).

Como no todo puede ser sobre putos y cafichos, también vi "Boys Grammar" (2005) dirigida por Dean Francis. Esta es una intensa historia sobre un chico de secundaria que es violado por otros estudiantes a plena luz del día. Abusado por los fuertes y los populares, no tiene otra opción que regresar a casa a pie, y cuando llega allí, descubre que su padre está cenando con un viejo amigo y con su hijo, el chico que lo sodomizó. ¿Podrá actuar calmadamente durante la cena o perderá el control y golpeará a su abusador? También vi "Heartland" y "Blue" que fueron un tanto decepcionantes. Aún así, febrero fue un buen mes para el séptimo arte, ¿no están de acuerdo?
