For the past few years, May has been Marvel’s month, so let’s talk about Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). I had high expectations, but I can’t say I’m 100% satisfied. This sequel is, indeed, a very entertaining and action-packed blockbuster, but it focuses too much on especial effects and neglects character development. My favorite moments are the party in which everyone takes turns to lift Thor’s hammer and the sequence in Hawkeye’s house. Fortunately, the cast is still as impressive as in the first installment: Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Quicksilver), etc.

Neil Burger directs Divergent (2014), based on Veronica Roth’s novel. In a society in which all teenagers are forced to leave their families, Shailene Woodley (The Spectacular Now) must decide what path to take. She chooses the Dauntless House and that’s how the adventure of a lifetime begins. I love the idea of this dystopian future in which everything has changed, and I also enjoyed the mild political elements interweaved in the narrative. Of course, there are some very memorable sequences. And the cast includes promising young actors such as Miles Teller (Whiplash) and Ansel Elgort. I can’t wait to see the sequel.  

By age 21 Xavier Dolan had already proved he was a genius filmmaker with Les Amours Imaginaires (2010). Mommy (2014), written and directed by Dolan is another example of his talent. In an alternative future, Canada has turned into a repressive country in which parents are forced to put their children into special institutions so that they can be constantly under control. Anne Dorval, however, is a very atypical mother that lover her 15-year-old son Antoine-Olivier Pilon. She loves him so very much, in fact, that one could say they have a rather incestuous relationship. Dolan audaciously explores the teenager’s sexuality, from his masturbatory urges to his constant need to touch his mother, even inappropriately. Furthermore, we also get to see the suffering of a single woman who barely manages to survive after losing her crappy job. There are moments of brutal violence between mother and son, but also inspiring and heartfelt scenes that confer an unprecedented level of humanity to these deranged characters. Truly of one of the best films of 2014.

Lars von Trier surprised me with Nymphomaniac Vol. I, and he does it again with Nymphomaniac Vol. II (2013). This time Charlotte Gainsbourg eagerly explores her sadomasochistic tendencies while confronting the difficulties of being a sex addict. Black humor, shocking scenes and clever ideas add value to this erotic production. The cast includes Shia LaBeouf (Bobby), Willem Dafoe (4:44 Last Day on Earth) and Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot).

Jaume Collet-Serra’s Non-Stop (2014) is full of suspense and unsettling circumstances since the opening sequence. Liam Neeson must protect the lives of the passengers in an airplane targeted by terrorists. This one kept me at the edge of my seat. And absolutely I loved to see Julianne Moore (Far From Heaven) in it.

Winter’s Tale (2014) was a big disappointment. Not even a good cast can save this one: Colin Farrell (Fright Night), Jennifer Connelly (Dark City), Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story: Freak Show), etc.

Seth MacFarlane is the writer, director and protagonist of A Million Ways to Die in the West (2014) a very funny comedy about the Old West. What can I say? I always appreciate a bit of vulgarity and bad taste jokes. The cast includes Charlize Theron (The Burning Plain), Liam Neeson and Giovanni Ribisi.

Spike Jonze left me in awe with his Scenes from the Suburbs, and Her (2013) was an outstanding creative exercise that revolves around the impossibility of committing to a relationship. Joaquin Phoenix is a lonely man who falls in love with a computer program, but as pathetic as his life may seem, it’s only a reflection of the depressing future he lives in. The cast includes Amy Adams (American Hustle) and Chris Pratt.

Submarine (2010) is Richard Ayoade’s directorial debut: a fascinating coming of age tale about an awkward teen (Craig Roberts) who tries to find love (or a quick shag) in high school while trying to prevent his parents’ marriage from falling apart. Slightly experimental, very original and extravagant in a good sense, Submarine is a wonderful voyage through the turbulent seas of adolescence. I really recommend it. 

Terry Loane’s Mickybo and Me (2004) is a poignant and heartbreaking chronicle about friendship and the horrors of war. Two young Irish boys (John Joe McNeill and Niall Wright) run away from home, trying to emulate their heroes Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Loane combines the innocence of childhood with the devastation of a war the kids cannot understand. The ending is really moving and unforgettable.   

The Shawshank Redemption (1994), directed by Frank Darabont, is an amazing adaptation of a Stephen King’s short story. Tim Robbins is a banker who goes to jail accused of a crime he didn’t commit. There he befriends Morgan Freeman, and as the years go by, he earns the respect of everyone around him. The way he escapes totally blew my mind.

Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) is a wonderful all-ages production. Spielberg effortlessly captures the essence of magic, as seen through the eyes of children; and creates a charming story about first encounters, tender aliens and clever kids. Every element here works brilliantly: the cinematography, the music and the acting (Henry Thomas, Robert MacNaughton and Drew Barrymore had very good performances). An undisputed classic from the 80s, E.T. continues to be one of those movies you must see at least twice.

Return of the Living Dead II (1988) is a hilarious comedy about reanimated corpses that want nothing else but to devour the brains of living people. If you want to laugh at zombies you should check this out.

En los últimos años, mayo ha sido el mes de Marvel, así que hablemos de “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015) de Joss Whedon. Tenía bastantes expectativas, pero no puedo decir que estoy 100% satisfecho. Esta secuela es, de hecho, un éxito de taquilla muy entretenido y lleno de acción, pero se centra demasiado en los efectos especiales y descuida el desarrollo de los personajes. Mis momentos favoritos son la fiesta en la que todos se turnan para levantar el martillo de Thor y la secuencia en la casa de Hawkeye. Me encanta la idea de este futuro distópico en el que todo ha cambiado, y también disfruté con los sutiles elementos políticos entrelazados en la narrativa. Por supuesto, hay algunas secuencias muy memorables. Y el reparto incluye a jóvenes actores tan prometedores como Miles Teller (Whiplash) y Ansel Elgort. Estoy impaciente por ver la continuación.

Dolan explora audazmente la sexualidad del adolescente, desde sus urgencias masturbatorias hasta su constante necesidad de tocar a su madre, incluso de manera inapropiada. Además, también podemos observar el sufrimiento de una mujer soltera que apenas logra sobrevivir después de perder su empleo miserable. Hay momentos de violencia brutal entre madre e hijo, pero también escenas inspiradoras y llenas de emoción que confieren un nivel de humanidad sin precedentes a estos personajes trastornados. Una de las mejores películas del 2014, de verdad.

“Non-Stop” de Jaume Collet-Serra (2014) está llena de suspenso y circunstancias inquietantes desde la primera toma. Liam Neeson debe proteger la vida de los pasajeros en un avión amenazado por terroristas. “Non-Stop” me mantuvo en vilo. Y me encantó la participación de Julianne Moore (Far From Heaven).

“Winter’s Tale” (2014) fue una gran decepción. Ni siquiera se salva con un buen reparto: Colin Farrell (Fright Night), Jennifer Connelly (Dark City), Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story: Freak Show), etc.

“Submarine” (2010) es el debut como director de Richard Ayoade: un fascinante relato sobre lo difícil que es crecer centrado en un adolescente torpe (Craig Roberts) que trata de encontrar el amor (o el sexo) en la secundaria mientras intenta evitar que el matrimonio de sus padres se desintegre. Ligeramente experimental, muy original y extravagante en el buen sentido, “Submarine” es un viaje maravilloso a través de los mares turbulentos de la adolescencia. Realmente la recomiendo.

“Mickybo and Me” (2004) de Terry Loane es una conmovedora y desgarradora crónica sobre la amistad y los horrores de la guerra. Dos niños irlandeses (John Joe McNeill y Niall Wright) huyen de casa, tratando de emular a sus héroes Butch Cassidy y Sundance Kid. Loane combina la inocencia de la infancia con la devastación de una guerra que los chicos no pueden entender. El final es realmente conmovedor e inolvidable.

“The Shawshank Redemption” (1994), dirigida por Frank Darabont, es una asombrosa adaptación de un cuento de Stephen King. Tim Robbins es un banquero que va a la cárcel acusado de un crimen que no cometió. Allí se hace amigo de Morgan Freeman, y conforme pasan los años, se gana el respeto de todos a su alrededor. La forma en que se escapa me tomó por sorpresa.

“E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (1982), de Steven Spielberg, es una maravillosa producción para todas las edades. Spielberg captura sin esfuerzo la esencia de la magia, vista a través de los ojos de los niños; y crea una encantadora historia sobre los primeros encuentros, tiernos extraterrestres y niños muy listos. Todos los elementos aquí funcionan brillantemente: la cinematografía, la música y la actuación (Henry Thomas, Robert MacNaughton y Drew Barrymore tenían muy buenos papeles). Un clásico indiscutible de los 80s, E.T. continúa siendo una de esas películas que hay que ver al menos dos veces.

“Return of the Living Dead II” (1988) es una comedia hilarante sobre cadáveres reanimados que no quieren otra cosa que devorar los cerebros de los que están vivos. Si quieren reírse de los zombis véanla.

I know some of you might feel as if I’m on a ‘filmic diet’, consuming less and less with each passing month... But trust me, I’ve just been busy. Still I went with my friends to see Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), director J.J. Abrams once again sends the Enterprise on a course of adventure that never stops. I really like the way Abrams handles the combat sequences, the dramatic confrontation between protagonists and antagonists and the never-ending action. The original cast returns, but besides Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Anton Yelchin, we have Benedict Cumberbatch as Khang, a villain so intelligent and lethal that captures our attention immediately. I was thrilled to see another great Star Trek production, and hopefully there will be a third one.

Emilio Estevez wrote and directed Bobby (2006), and it is a heartfelt homage to Robert Kennedy. Focusing on the day of the assassination of the presidential candidate, Estevez creates one of the most fascinating and tragic stories I’ve seen in years. He shows us the most significant moments in the lives of a group of characters and the way they see Robert Kennedy as well as the way they dream of a more human America, a nation of justice and liberty and not of bigotry and war. With a large cast of famous actors (Anthony Hopkins, Helen Hunt, Joshua Jackson, Ashton Kutcher, Shia LaBeouf, William H. Macy, Lindsay Lohan, Laurence Fishburne, Demi Moore, Martin Sheen, Sharon Stone, Elijah Wood, etc.) and a superb script, “Bobby” is a true contemporary masterpiece. 

Superman IV: the Quest for Peace (1987) was the last Man of Steel movie with Christopher Reeve in it, who also helped co-write it. Gene Hackman (Lex Luthor) and Margot Kidder (Lois Lane) return, and we even have Mariel Hemingway as a new character. The premise for Quest for Peace was actually quite interesting: in a world threatened by nuclear holocaust, only someone as powerful as Superman can get rid of all the atomic bombs thus ensuring world peace. There are some very inspiring moments, like Superman’s speech at the UN or his examples of idealism and goodness, but overall the execution of the concept is inadequate. With the smallest budget of all the four Superman movies and a shoddy production, the plot holes and bad narrative choices were too evident and because of that the superhero franchise was negatively affected.  

Based on the comic book by James O'Barr, The Crow (1994) was written and directed by Alex Proyas who did a remarkable work in designing a dark city and an even darker hero. Brandon Lee, the protagonist, died in an accident during the filming process. Nevertheless, Alex Proyas finished this mythical film, which has become a cult classic and a precursor of darker and more adult oriented productions.

Before “The Walking Dead” Frank Darabont wrote and directed The Mist (2007), based on a Stephen King’s novella. When a mysterious mist surrounds a small town, people start dying. There is something hidden in the mist, something not of this world. Thomas Jane is a concerned father who seeks shelter with his son in the local supermarket, he’s trapped there with Toby Jones (a cashier), Marcia Gay Harden (a religious extremist, hysterically obsessed with god) and many of the protagonists of The Walking Dead (Laurie Holden, Melissa McBride, Jeffrey DeMunn). Imprisonment exacerbates the fear and irrationality of everyone, and at the same time they get attacked by the creatures that hide in the mist. The suspense and the horror come not only from the exterior threat but most especially from the aberrant behavior of frightened and enraged people. Easily one of the best horror films I’ve seen in my life, I recommend it to everyone. It’s a must see.

From the Netherlands comes Spetters (1980), directed by Paul Verhoeven and starred by Hans van Tongeren. This is an aggressive and almost violent chronicle of the lives of three young men, filmed with an intensity and realism that knows no boundaries. We see these three boys in their sexual escapades, in their failed attempts to become the best motorcyclists in the country; we see them struggling to get money, we see them jerking off together and trying to seduce cute girls with as little money as possible. The intensity of the scenes, the full frontal nudity and the closeness that the director accomplishes with the protagonists is outstanding. Nothing here feels forced or out of place, and in this tale about losers, tragic accidents, male rape, unrequited love and juvenile frustration we are confronted with the harsh reality of an adult world that does not condone the sins of youth. 
   
Chroniques sexuelles d’une famille d’aujourd’hui (2012) is directed by Pascal Arnold and Jean-Marc Barr, who have done exceptional films in the past about young assassins and the painful discovery of sexuality (like American Translation or Chacun sa nuit). This time, the theme of murders is omitted and we get a thorough analysis of human sexuality that focuses on a French family. Mathias Melloul is a teenager that gets caught masturbating (while filming himself with his cellphone) in school. This incident prompts his parents to start discussing about sexuality. As a loving couple that has been married for years, they have what many would consider a healthy and normal sexual life… except, they don’t. The boy’s brother (interpreted by Nathan Duval), however is particularly fond of masturbating while he watches threesomes, and then as he participates in these encounters he doesn’t know if he’s more interested in the girl or the boy (eventually he will date Pierre Perrier, an actor that has participated in American Translation and Chacun sa nuit). But we also get to see the sexual life of the boy’s sister, and the sad and almost depressing reality of his granddad, who still has sexual urges but as a widower is supposed to keep them in check, at least to satisfy society’s demand. ‘Sexual Chronicles’ is excellent. 

Finally, I also saw Diumenge (2012), by Jordi Estapé and Marc Vilajuana. This Catalan production is centered in the lives of two high school boys Enric Domingo and Alex Duran. One of them is a ‘normal’ kid, with good friends and a pretty girlfriend, the other one is new in town, but he’s also an outcast, reviled by many due to his effeminate demeanor. Soon, homosexual passion breaks through, causing devastating effects for both boys.

Alguno de ustedes pensará que estoy 'a dieta fílmica', consumiendo menos y menos cada mes que pasa... Pero confíen en mí, simplemente he estado ocupado. Aún así fui con mis amigos a ver "Star Trek Into Darkness" (2013), el director J.J. Abrams una vez más envía al Enterprise en rumbo a una aventura que nunca se detiene. Realmente me gusta la manera en que Abrams maneja las secuencias de combate, la confrontación dramática entre protagonistas y antagonistas y la acción incesante. El elenco original regresa, pero además de Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto y Anton Yelchin, tenemos a Benedict Cumberbatch como Khang, un villano tan inteligente y letal que captura nuestra atención de inmediato. Estoy encantado de ver otra gran producción de "Star Trek" y espero que haya una tercera.

Enfocándose en el día del asesinato del candidato presidencial, Estevez crea uno de las más fascinantes y trágicas historias que he visto en años. Nos muestra los momentos más significativos en las vidas de un grupo de personajes, el modo en que ven a Robert Kennedy y el modo en que sueñan con un Estados Unidos más humano, una nación de justicia y libertad y no de discriminación y guerra. Con un gran elenco de actores famosos (Anthony Hopkins, Helen Hunt, Joshua Jackson, Ashton Kutcher, Shia LaBeouf, William H. Macy, Lindsay Lohan, Laurence Fishburne, Demi Moore, Martin Sheen, Sharon Stone, Elijah Wood, etc.) y un soberbio guión, “Bobby” es una verdadera obra maestra contemporánea. 

"Superman IV: the Quest for Peace" (1987) fue la última película del Hombre de Acero con Christopher Reeve, quien también fue el co-guionista. Gene Hackman (Lex Luthor) y Margot Kidder (Lois Lane) regresan, e incluso tenemos a Mariel Hemingway como un nuevo personaje. La premisa de la Búsqueda de la paz era de hecho bastante interesante: en un mundo amenazado por el holocausto nuclear, sólo alguien tan poderoso como Superman puede deshacerse de todas las bombas atómicas, asegurando así la paz mundial. Hay algunos momentos muy inspiradores, como el discurso de Superman en la ONU o sus ejemplos de idealismo y bondad, pero en conjunto la ejecución del concepto es pobre. Con el presupuesto más pequeño de las cuatro películas de Superman y una producción defectuosa, los huecos argumentales y las malas decisiones narrativas son demasiado evidentes, y a causa de ello la franquicia del súper-héroe se vio negativamente afectada.

Basado en el cómic de James O'Barr, "The Crow" (1994) fue escrita y dirigida por Alex Proyas, quien hace un trabajo notable al diseñar una ciudad oscura y a un héroe aún más oscuro. Brandon Lee, el protagonista, murió en un accidente durante la filmación. No obstante, Alex Proyas terminó este mítico film, que se ha convertido en un clásico de culto y en un precursor de producciones más oscuras y más orientadas al público adulto.

Antes de “The Walking Dead”, Frank Darabont escribió y dirigió "The Mist" (2007), basado en una novela breve de Stephen King. Cuando una misteriosa niebla rodea a un pequeño pueblo, la gente empieza a morir. Hay algo escondido en la niebla, algo que no es de este mundo. Thomas Jane es un preocupado padre que busca cobijo con su hijo en el supermercado local, él está atrapado allí con Toby Jones (un cajero), Marcia Gay Harden (una extremista religiosa, histéricamente obsesionada con dios) y muchos de los protagonistas de "The Walking Dead" (Laurie Holden, Melissa McBride, Jeffrey DeMunn). El aprisionamiento exacerba el miedo y la irracionalidad de todos, y al mismo tiempo son atacados por las criaturas que se esconden en la niebla. El suspenso y el horror llegan no sólo desde el exterior sino sobre todo de la conducta aberrante de la gente enfurecida y aterrorizada. Sin duda, uno de los mejores films de terror que he visto en mi vida. Lo recomiendo. Hay que verlo de todas maneras.

De Países Bajos llega "Spetters" (1980), dirigido por Paul Verhoeven y protagonizado por Hans van Tongeren. Esta es una crónica agresiva y casi violenta de las vidas de tres jóvenes, filmada con una intensidad y un realismo que no conoce límites. Vemos a estos tres chicos y sus odiseas sexuales, sus intentos fallidos de convertirse en los mejores motociclistas del país; los vemos luchando para conseguir dinero, los vemos masturbándose juntos e intentando seducir a las chicas bonitas con la menor cantidad de plata posible. La intensidad de las escenas, los desnudos totales y la cercanía que el director consigue con los protagonistas es sobresaliente. Nada aquí se siente forzado o fuera de lugar, y en este relato sobre perdedores, trágicos accidentes, violación entre hombres, amor no correspondido y frustración juvenil nos vemos confrontados con la cruda realidad de un mundo adulto que no perdona los pecados de juventud.
   
"Chroniques sexuelles d’une famille d’aujourd’hui" (2012) es dirigida por Pascal Arnold y Jean-Marc Barr, quienes ya contaban con films excepcionales sobre jóvenes asesinos y el doloroso descubrimiento de la sexualidad (como "American Translation" o "Chacun sa nuit"). Esta vez, el tema de los asesinatos es omitido, y obtenemos así un minucioso análisis de la sexualidad humana que se enfoca en una familia francesa. Mathias Melloul es un adolescente que es sorprendido mientras se masturba en el colegio (además de filmarse a sí mismo en el acto con su celular). Este incidente motiva a sus padres a empezar a discutir sobre sexualidad. Al ser una amorosa pareja con años de matrimonio, ellos tienen lo que muchos considerarían una vida sexual sana y normal... excepto que esto no es así. El hermano del muchacho (interpretado por Nathan Duval), sin embargo, es particularmente entusiasta de la masturbación mientras mira tríos, y luego cuando participa en estos encuentros no sabe si está más atraído por la chica o el chico (eventualmente saldrá con Pierre Perrier, un actor que ha participado en "American Translation" y "Chacun sa nuit"). Pero también vemos la vida sexual de la hermana del muchacho, y la triste y deprimente realidad de su abuelo, quien todavía tiene deseos sexuales, pero como viudo supuestamente debe reprimirlos, al menos para satisfacer las demandas de la sociedad. ‘Crónicas sexuales’ es excelente. 

Finalmente, también vi "Diumenge" (2012), de Jordi Estapé y Marc Vilajuana. Esta producción catalana se centra en las vidas de dos chiquillos de secundaria Enric Domingo y Alex Duran. Uno de ellos es un jovencito 'normal', con buenos amigos y una bonita enamorada, el otro es nuevo en el pueblo, pero también es un marginado, repudiado por muchos a causa de su conducta afeminada. Pronto, la pasión homosexual surge, causando devastadores efectos para ambos chicos.
