Young Avengers # 11 - Kieron Gillen & Jamie McKelvie

You are only as young as you feel. And it is true, in many ways, age is a state of the mind. It has been quite rejuvenating, at least for me, to read Young Avengers every month for the past year. I even sent a letter to Kieron Gillen trying to explain my excitement and joy (the letter was printed on YA # 4, ‘nuff said). There was certainly something very special about this title, something as strong as a heartbeat and as a rhythmic as the best songs. 

Yes, Young Avengers is Marvel’s finest title of 2013, but it’s also the best in the industry. It has received plenty of recognitions, chief amongst them the prestigious Arion’s Achievement Award for Best Ongoing Series of the year. But seriously, even without medals and laurels, I’m sure you would absolutely love Young Avengers.  

“You are as old as you feel” explains Loki, and Marvel Boy makes a very pertinent intervention. “It’s a truth I’ve seen in many worlds and people: the young worried they’re too old”. I’ve shared with my friends the same concern, the fear of getting older. Soon I’ll be 30, and I think that I no longer have the right to consider myself young. 

Kate Bishop is worried (just like I am). She says she’s 21, what happens if in the intergenerational battle she ends up teaming with Mother, the demon from a parallel dimension? If it’s grownups versus kids, is she the former or the latter? Loki and Marvel Boy convince her that she is young. Totally, absolutely. And it’s very reassuring to admit that, even if I’m getting closer to a change of digits (from twenty-something to thirty-something), I would still fight alongside Wiccan, Hulkling, Marvel Boy and Loki.

Were you afraid of the future? Did you ever stop to consider what it would mean to stop being a teenager and becoming an adult? In order to defeat Mother, Loki must dispose of his child persona, if he is to gain enough power he must turn into a teenager warrior. And thanks to Wiccan’s magic and an arcane ritual involving candles, Kid Loki is annihilated and Teen Loki finally walks amongst men. 

Although he is the god of mischief and the supreme master of lies, there was something very endearing about Loki’s childhood innocence and enthusiasm. Once the child is gone, the Young Avengers lose a fundamental part of their spirit as a group.

In “Stage Nervous Breakdown”, the battle is near. And Prodigy has summoned every teenaged hero of the Marvel universe. Hundreds of underage adventurers reunite under the same banner. It’s time for youths to vanquish their elderly foes. 

Jamie McKelvie’s art is superb. From the splash page that includes a prepubescent Loki to the amazing panel that shows Loki as a teenager deity. Despite the dramatic events there is always room for humor (a good example would be Marvel Boy “getting caught” by Kate Bishop watching something inappropriate on his holographic screen). And watching the faces of over 50 juvenile heroes in the same page is –surprisingly– a visual delight. □

Marvel Boy “getting caught” / Marvel Boy con las "manos en la masa"

Eres tan joven como te sientes. Y también es cierto que la edad es un estado de la mente. Ha sido bastante rejuvenecedor, al menos para mí, leer "Young Avengers" todos los meses durante el año que acaba de pasar. Incluso le envié una carta a Kieron Gillen, intentando explicar mi emoción y mi alegría (por cierto, la carta fue publicada en el # 4). Había ciertamente algo muy especial en esta colección, algo tan fuerte como el latido de un corazón y tan rítmico como las mejores canciones.

Sí, "Young Avengers" es el mejor título Marvel del 2013, pero también es uno de los mejores de la industria. Ha recibido muchos reconocimientos, algunos muy preciados como el Arion’s Achievement Award a mejor serie mensual. Pero en serio, incluso sin medallas ni laureles, estoy seguro que todos quedarían encantados con "Young Avengers".  

“Eres tan viejo como te sientes” explica Loki, y Marvel Boy interviene de manera muy pertinente. “Es una verdad que he visto en muchos mundos y personas: los jóvenes se preocupan de haber envejecido demasiado”. He compartido con mis amigos la misma preocupación, el miedo de envejecer. Pronto, tendré 30 años, y creo que ya no tengo el derecho de considerarme joven.

Over 50 young heroes / Más de 50 héroes juveniles

Kate Bishop está preocupada (igual que yo). Ella dice que tiene 21, ¿qué pasaría si en la batalla intergeneracional ella termina aliándose con Madre, el demonio de una dimensión paralela? Si se trata de adultos versus chiquillos, ¿ella es lo primero o lo segundo? Loki y Marvel Boy la convencen de que es joven. Total y absolutamente. Y es muy reconfortante admitir que, incluso si es que estoy próximo a un cambio de dígitos (de 20 tantos a 30 tantos), aun así pelearía al lado de Wiccan, Hulkling, Marvel Boy y Loki.

¿Le tenían miedo al futuro? ¿Alguna vez consideraron lo que significaría dejar de ser un adolescente y convertirse en un adulto? Para derrotar a Madre, Loki debe deshacerse de su identidad de niño, si ha de ganar suficiente poder debe convertirse en un guerrero adolescente. Y gracias a la magia de Wiccan y a un arcano ritual con velas, el Loki niño es aniquilado y el Loki adolescente finalmente surge.

Aunque es el dios de la travesura y el amo supremo de las mentiras, había algo encantador en el entusiasmo y en la inocencia infantil de Loki. Ahora que el niño ya no existe, los Jóvenes Vengadores pierden una parte fundamental de su espíritu como grupo.

En “Ataque de nervios escénicos”, la batalla se aproxima. Y Prodigy convoca a todos los héroes adolescentes del universo Marvel. Cientos de aventureros menores de edad se reúnen bajo un mismo estandarte. Es hora de que los jóvenes venzan a sus envejecidos enemigos.

El arte de Jamie McKelvie es soberbio. Desde la página que incluye a un Loki pre-pubescente hasta el asombroso panel que muestra a Loki como una deidad adolescente. A pesar de los eventos dramáticos siempre hay espacio para el humor (un buen ejemplo sería Marvel Boy atrapado con las "manos en la masa" por Kate Bishop mientras ve algo inapropiado en su pantalla holográfica). Y mirar las caras de más de 50 héroes juveniles en la misma página es –sorprendentemente– una delicia visual. □

Young Avengers # 10 - Kieron Gillen & Jamie McKelvie

For most people, Mother’s Day is a happy occasion, albeit slightly smeared by the corporate interests of the greeting cards industry. For the Young Avengers, on the other hand, Mother’s Day is the most miserable moment of the year. 

Mother, the inter-dimensional demon accidentally summoned by Billy (Wiccan) is still at large. And that means the Young Avengers are still in danger. One of my favorite pages shows just how ferocious this devilish woman can be: she devours a caption. I love the way in which Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie have pushed the boundaries of the fourth wall, and this is a clever example of the narrative style they have developed in earlier issues. 

Gillen finally starts showing us that Loki isn’t the sweet kid we thought he was (although, seriously, how sweet can the god of mischief be?). He has been plotting all along. Poisoning the mind of Billy and making Teddy (Hulkling) feel insecure about his boyfriend. By effectively ruining the loving relationship between these two boys, Loki is manipulating Billy’s existence, just enough so that his destiny as the galaxy’s mightiest demiurge might be fulfilled. “Imagine all realities as a deck of cards, and you with the hands born to shuffle”, says Thor’s brother.

The conversation between Loki and the demoniac Mother is especially revealing. But Leah’s presence is also an interesting turn of events. Now, I must confess I have never read Gillen’s Journey Into Mystery, but I understand is one of Marvel’s best series of recent years, and I think I understand why. The mystery between Leah of Hel and Loki of Asgard was fully explored in Journey Into Mystery, but it’s also present in these pages.

Now Leah has deceived Teddy. She has convinced him that he needs a “special group therapy”. And when Teddy agrees to be a part of one of these highly unorthodox counseling sessions, he runs into an old acquaintance of Ms. America, three Marvel Boy’s ex-girlfriends (a Kree female, a human girl and Oubliette, the Exterminatrix) and the evil Patriot that kidnapped Speed in issue # 6. Teddy realizes he has willingly walked into a trap, and what is worse, after weeks of being weakened by Leah’s powerful magical enchantments, he can no longer break free. 

Every month, the first book I read is Young Avengers. I’m always very excited to find out what has happened. And every month there is a great cliffhanger that leaves me completely surprised. And then I impatiently wait an entire month to read the next issue. This time, however, not only the cliffhanger was unexpected but the whole poker game, there isn’t one card that trumps the other but rather a combination of cards that will turn any reader into a compulsive gambler. I’m already betting on what might be some of the possible outcomes.

Of course, the end of the second volume of Young Avengers wouldn’t have been as impressive without the superb art of Jamie McKelvie. Through his immaculate and symbolic designs, McKelvie blurs gender lines and mocks male superiority. Perhaps this is made evident in one particular moment of rage, in which Teddy turns into Hulkling and literally rips off not only his t-shirt (as the original Hulk always did) but also his pants (luckily for him, beneath his regular clothes he’s wearing his unstable molecules costume, so nudity is avoided). McKelvie’s drawings also play on contemporary anxieties about sexual expression (and repression).

Loki manipulate Billy's mind / Loki manipula la mente de Billy

Para la mayoría de las personas, el día de la madre es una ocasión feliz, aunque ligeramente mancillada por los intereses corporativos de la industria de tarjetas de saludos. Para los Jóvenes Vengadores, por el contrario, el día de la madre es el momento más miserable del año.

Madre, el demonio inter-dimensional invocado accidentalmente por Billy (Wiccan) sigue en libertad. Y eso significa que los Jóvenes Vengadores aún están en peligro. Una de mis páginas favoritas muestra qué tan feroz es esta diabólica mujer: ella devora un cuadro de texto. Me encanta la manera en la que Kieron Gillen y Jamie McKelvie han empujado las fronteras de realidad y ficción, y este es un ejemplo muy astuto del estilo narrativo que han desarrollado en números anteriores.

Gillen finalmente empieza a mostrarnos que Loki no es el dulce niño que habíamos pensado que era (aunque, en serio, ¿qué tan dulce puede ser el dios de los engaños?). Él ha estado conspirando todo este tiempo. Envenenando la mente de Billy y haciendo que Teddy (Hulkling) se sienta inseguro con su enamorado. Al arruinar la relación entre estos dos chicos, Loki está manipulando la existencia de Billy, lo suficiente para que se cumpla su destino como el más poderosos demiurgo de la galaxia. “Imagina todas esas realidades como un mazo de cartas, y a ti como las manos nacidas para barajarlas”, dice el hermano de Thor.

La conversación entre Loki y la demoniaca Madre es especialmente reveladora. Pero la presencia de Leah es también un giro interesante. Debo confesar que nunca he leído Journey Into Mystery de Gillen, pero entiendo que es una de las mejores series de Marvel de los últimos años, y creo que sé por qué. El misterio entre Leah de Hel y Loki de Asgard fue explorado por completo en Journey Into Mystery, pero también está presente en estas páginas.

Leah ha engañado a Teddy. Ella lo ha convencido de que necesita una "terapia grupal especial". Y cuando Teddy acepta ser parte de estas sesiones tan poco ortodoxas, se encuentra con un viejo conocido de Ms. America, con tres ex-enamoradas de Marvel Boy (una hembra Kree, una chica humana y Oubliette, la Exterminatrix) y con el malvado Patriot que secuestró a Speed en el número 6. Teddy se da cuenta de que caído voluntariamente en una emboscada, y lo que es peor, después de semanas de ser debilitado por los poderosos hechizos de Leah, ya no es capaz de huir.

Cada mes, lo primero que leo es Jóvenes Vengadores. Siempre me emociona saber qué ha pasado. Y todos los meses quedo impaciente por saber qué sucederá en la próxima entrega. Y hay que esperar todo un mes. Esta vez, sin embargo, no sólo la última escena fue inesperada sino todo el juego de póker; no hay una carta que le gane a las demás sino, más bien, una combinación de cartas que convertirán a todos los lectores en apostadores compulsivos. Yo ya estoy apostando sobre cuáles podrían ser algunos de los desenlaces posibles.

Por supuesto, el final del segundo volumen de los Jóvenes Vengadores no habría sido tan impresionante sin el soberbio arte de Jamie McKelvie. A través de sus diseños inmaculados y simbólicos, McKelvie difumina las líneas de género y se burla de la superioridad masculina. Tal vez esto se hace evidente en un particular momento de ira, en el que Teddy se convierte en Hulkling y literalmente destroza no sólo su camiseta (tal como siempre pasaba con el Hulk original) sino también sus pantalones (afortunadamente para él, debajo de sus ropas está usando su uniforme de moléculas inestables, así que la desnudez logra evitarse). Los dibujos de McKelvie también juegan con las ansiedades contemporáneas en relación a la expresión (y represión) sexual.

Loki (in the middle) / Loki al medio

It’s a strange thing the relationship we have with our parents. They want the best for us, but sometimes they lack the necessary objectivity and end up taking the worst possible decisions. For many, their ruined lives are the direct result of something a father or a mother did or didn’t do. This becomes even clearer when we take a look at gay teenagers and the way their parents react.

Certainly, Allan Heinberg surprised us when he described Billy Kaplan’s parents as two open minded adults who were very proud of their gay son. Obviously, that is not the case most of the times. The usual reaction is the one we see in Teddy Altman’s mother: hatred, discrimination and hostility. Granted, she isn’t really Teddy’s mother but rather a version of her from a parallel dimension that has, somehow, invaded our reality. But still, it’s easy to notice that this extra-dimensional homophobic demon shares many traits with intolerant parents all over the world. Surely, Kieron Gillen knows how to combine fantastic elements with realistic observations, and the result is a subtle but engaging allegory about motherhood. 

There is something deliciously twisted in the way this woman brainwashes Billy’s parents in order to ban the ‘inappropriate’ relationship between the two boys. She’s determined to eliminate any possibility of a gay romance between Billy and Teddy, but she underestimates the kids.

It takes the two teenagers only a couple of minutes to figure out that there is something wrong with this motherly figure. And when Billy tries to cast a spell on her, she counterattacks. Even Teddy’s attempt to neutralize her proves to be futile. After asking the Avengers for help, they discover that this brainwashing scheme is very serious. Unable to resist the combined power of the Scarlet Witch, Rogue, Thor, Havoc, Wolverine and Captain America, the couple is quickly imprisoned –separately– in an extra-dimensional jail.

Jamie McKelvie once again creates page after page of pure beauty. There is something especially enlightening about his clear panels, his precise lines and his determinate brushes. And his sense of design is simply fabulous. One of my favorite moments is the one that takes place when Loki liberates Billy and Teddy from their otherworldly imprisonment. What we see here is a fascinating exploration of the comic as a visual medium instead of the boring and unimaginative drawings that we see in most of the titles out there. Because here, being behind bars is a synonym of being behind the panel, the lines of the page are the contours that restrain the characters movements.

Jamie also has some wonderful and intimate sequences, like the one in which we see Billy and Teddy holding hands, showing their mutual support and their concern for Teddy’s deranged “mother”. Another great page shows Teddy, as Hulkling, tearing apart the body of the woman, who simply reconstitutes herself. I said it last month but I’ll say it again: this is the best Marvel NOW title and also one of the best comics I’ve read either from DC, Marvel or any other imprint in 2013. I can’t wait for the third issue.

La relación que tenemos con nuestros padres es extraña. Ellos quieren lo mejor para nosotros, pero a veces carecen de la objetividad necesaria y terminan tomando las peores decisiones posibles. Para muchos, sus vidas arruinadas son el resultado directo de algo que un padre o una madre hizo o dejó de hacer. Esto se hace más claro cuando vemos al adolescente gay y la manera en que sus padres reaccionan.

Wolverine, Captain America, Havoc, Jarvis, Scarlet Witch, Rogue & Thor

Sin duda, Allan Heinberg nos sorprendió cuando describió a los padres de Billy Kaplan como dos adultos de mente abierta que están muy orgullosos de su hijo gay. Obviamente, esto no es lo habitual. La reacción usual es la que vemos en la madre de Teddy: odio, discriminación y hostilidad. Es cierto que ella en realidad no es la madre de Teddy sino una versión paralela de otra dimensión que, de algún modo, ha invadido nuestra realidad. Pero aún así, es fácil notar que este homofóbico demonio extra-dimensional comparte muchos rasgos con padres intolerantes a lo largo del mundo. Ciertamente, Kieron Gillen sabe cómo combinar los elementos fantásticos con las observaciones realísticas, y el resultado es una alegoría sobre la maternidad sutil pero cautivante.

Hay algo deliciosamente retorcido en la manera en la que esta mujer les lava el cerebro a los padres de Billy para prohibir la relación "impropia" entre los dos muchachos. Ella está determinada a eliminar cualquier posibilidad de un romance gay entre Billy y Teddy, pero subestima a los chiquillos.

En tan sólo un par de minutos los adolescentes deducen que algo no marcha bien con esta figura materna. Y cuando Billy intenta conjurar un hechizo, ella contraataca. Incluso el intento de Teddy de neutralizarla es fútil. Después de pedirle ayuda a los Avengers, descubren que este plan de lavado cerebral va en serio. Incapaces de resistir al poder combinado de la Bruja Escarlata, Rogue, Thor, Havoc, Wolverine y Captain America, la pareja es rápidamente apresada -por separado- en una cárcel extra-dimensional.

Jamie McKelvie una vez más crea página tras página de belleza pura. Hay algo especialmente iluminador en sus viñetas limpias, sus líneas precisas y sus pinceladas firmes. Y su sentido del diseño es simplemente fabuloso. Uno de mis momentos favoritos ocurre cuando Loki libera a Billy y Teddy de su prisión. Lo que vemos aquí es una fascinante exploración del cómic como medio visual en vez de los dibujos aburridos y poco imaginativos de muchos otros títulos. Porque aquí, estar entre rejas es un sinónimo de estar tras las viñetas, las líneas de la página son los contornos que restringen el movimiento de los personajes.  

Jamie también tiente secuencias íntimas y maravillosas, como aquella en la que vemos a Billy y Teddy agarrándose de la mano, mostrando su apoyo mutuo y su preocupación por la desquiciada "madre" de Teddy. Otra gran página muestra a Teddy, como Hulkling, destrozando el cuerpo de la mujer, quien simplemente se reconstituye. Lo dije el mes pasado y lo diré de nuevo: este es el mejor título de Marvel NOW y también uno de los mejores cómics he que leído el 2013 de DC, Marvel o cualquier otra editorial. Me muero de ganas por leer el tercer número.
