2023 Comic Books: Arion's Achievement Awards

In many ways, this has been a busier year than previous ones. Of course, I always manage to find enough time to sit down and read comics. It's a recurring, monthly ritual that always brings me joy, whether it be reading something new or re-reading classic materials. Throughout the years, no matter what, reading comics remains an important component of my life. 

Most comics are mildly entertaining and narratively acceptable and that’s it. Fortunately, there are always a few that go beyond the standard, expanding our imagination and igniting our curiosity. My purpose here is to highlight those works that have, indeed, inspired me. So, without further ado, I invite you all to the 13th annual edition of the AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards).

Mark Buckingham

We remember intense moments. Those instances of happiness, pain, sadness, anger and so on. But can we make others experience all of that? I think only good writers are able to achieve such a feat. Transmitting emotions so powerful that something inside of us is awakened. There are 3 excellent writers on my 2023 list: Ed Piskor for his shocking and brutally unapologetic approach to the deepest crevices of online depravity in “Red Room: Crypto Killaz”, Ryan North for his fantastically engaging  “Fantastic Four” and Neil Gaiman for his powerful and profoundly evocative “Miracleman: The Silver Age”. 

Growing up surrounded by art helps me to distinguish who are truly masters of pencil & inks. Of course,  if we add to the mix the fact that I’m an autodidact artist, then you’ll see I have a good approach when it comes to judging the artistic skills of others. 3 artists have exceled during the past 12 months and I think a reward is only fair: Rafael Grampá for his sinister, highly detailed and hauntingly beautiful “Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham”, Travis Charest for his brief but stunning contribution to “The Ambassadors” and Mark Buckingham for his remarkable “Miracleman: The Silver Age”.  

The only duty of a cover is to be aesthetically superior to all others. After all it’s the first thing we see and it’s what persuades to hold a comic in our hands. Cover artwork must be gorgeous. It isn’t easy to come across great covers on a monthly basis, but some artists have pleasantly surprised me with their output: Mark Brooks for his impressive “Immortal X-Men” cover art, full of color and attractive designs; Mark Buckingham for his spectacular illustrations for “Miracleman: The Silver Age”; and Steve Skroce, for his eye-catching and energetic work in “Clobberin' Time”.

Sometimes we don’t pay attention to editors, but they work constantly to provide us with the best possible comics. In this case the award goes to Keith Richardson (Rebellion / 2000 AD) for putting together the superb line of 2000 AD graphic novels and trade paperbacks.  

After reading an insane amount of comics it can be quite difficult to choose the best one. So I’ve considered only those published in 2023 (that, for instance, rules out “America Lost & Found”, truly one of the most brilliant Judge Dredd comics I’ve ever read). So the 2023 Arion’s Achievement Award for Best Single Issue goes to “Who Is… Dickie Dauntless?” from Miracleman: The Silver Age # 6; Neil Gaiman creates a fascinating story in which emotional pain, trauma and even a glimmer of hope can coexist as we delve deep into Young Miracleman’s secret past as a victim of sexual abuse.

Although “Miracleman: The Silver Age” doesn’t necessarily come out on a monthly schedule it is still, without a shadow of a doubt, the best ongoing series of this and last year. Neil Gaiman’s innovative and courageous exploration of identity and sexuality in Young Miracleman; a poignant and unforgettable tale about adolescence and relationships; and one of the best superhero titles I could possibly ask for. 

Mark Buckingham

There have been many wonderful miniseries (“The Plot Holes”, “Wild’s End”, “Clobberin' Time”, “Local Man”) but the prize goes to “Red Room: Crypto Killaz”. I can’t remember the last time I saw a story that could combine so skillfully moments of absolute depravity, explicit violence and a piercing analysis of deranged online communities. Controversial and shocking, this is a series only for mature readers.

As soon as I began the nominations for New Series I quickly realized how many amazing first issues I had read. I loved “W0RLDTR33”, “Something Epic”, “Bone Orchard Tenement”, “Con & On”, “Captain America”, “Flash” and “Wonder Woman”, but this award cannot be shared. So the one and only Best New Series is “Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham”, one of the highest artistic accomplishments of the year accompanied by a brilliant script.

“America Lost & Found: The Rediscovered Scripts” deserves as many accolades as possible. It certainly is the Best Archival Collection / Reprint I bought this year and also one of the finest hardcovers I have in my collection. Rebellion really knows how to do a truly deluxe hardcover edition with magnificent extras!

Although I tend to lean towards American publishers that doesn’t mean, in any way, that I can’t recognize great publishers from other countries. 2023 was the year of Rebellion. In addition to the weekly 2000 AD, Rebellion has been releasing a wonderful selection of trade paperbacks and hardcovers including material from decades ago. So, against all odds, the best publisher of 2023 is the British Rebellion.

For over a decade now, it is a yearly tradition for me to find out, possibly weeks or months in advance, which Free Comic Book Day titles will be released in May. All the information is readily available at FreeComicBookDay.com from solicitations to previews, everything that you need to enjoy that annual party that is FCBD.  

 

In 2023 we say goodbye to several prominent creators: Dan Green and Joe Giella, were classic inkers, and part of the Silver Age of Comics. Decades younger than the previous two, Lee Moder was an artist known for co-creating Star Girl. Incredibly famous for his work in Spider-Man along Stan Lee, as well as many other classic Marvel titles, John Romita Sr. was one of the most respected artists in the industry. Francisco Ibáñez was extremely popular in Spain thanks to his humoristic Mortadelo & Filemón, which acquired fame in many other Spanish-speaking countries. Rachel Pollack was perhaps the first trans woman who managed to break into the comic book industry, working mostly for Vertigo and creating stories that defied social expectations, which is always the mark of a good writer. I am particularly sad for the loss of a childhood idol, the British artist who brought me so much joy in titles like Sam Slade Robo Hunter or masterpieces like Halo Jones, I’m talking about Ian Gibson, whose unique style will forever be ingrained in my memory. And at last, but not least, Keith Giffen, a writer and artist of extraordinary talent, and someone who illustrated some of my favorite childhood comics, such as Omega Men and Legion of Super-Heroes, even in recent years, I was still rediscovering his facet as a writer in Justice League International. Giffen was a true giant in the industry, and he'll be missed and mourned by countless readers.

En muchos sentidos, este ha sido un año más ajetreado que los anteriores. Por supuesto, siempre encuentro suficiente tiempo para sentarme y leer cómics. Es un ritual mensual recurrente que siempre me trae alegría, ya sea leyendo algo nuevo o releyendo materiales clásicos. A lo largo de los años, pase lo que pase, la lectura de cómics sigue siendo una parte importante de mi vida.

La mayoría de los cómics son medianamente entretenidos y narrativamente aceptables y eso es todo. Afortunadamente, siempre hay algunos que van más allá del standard, que expanden nuestra imaginación y encienden nuestra curiosidad. Mi propósito aquí es resaltar esas obras que, de hecho, me han inspirado. Así que, sin más preámbulos, los invito a la décimotercera edición anual de los premios AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards).

Recordamos momentos intensos. Esos momentos de felicidad, dolor, tristeza, ira, etc. ¿Pero podemos hacer que otros experimenten todo eso? Creo que sólo los buenos escritores son capaces de lograr tal hazaña, transmitiendo emociones tan poderosas que algo se despierta en nuestro interior. Hay tres escritores excelentes en mi lista de 2023: Ed Piskor por su enfoque impactante, brutal y sin remordimientos de las grietas más profundas de la depravación online en “Red Room: Crypto Killaz”, Ryan North por su fantásticamente encantador “Los cuatro fantásticos” y Neil Gaiman por su poderosa y profundamente evocadora “Miracleman: The Silver Age”.

Crecer rodeado de arte me ayuda a distinguir quiénes son verdaderos maestros del lápiz y la tinta. Por supuesto, si a esto le sumamos el hecho de que soy un artista autodidacta, entonces veréis que tengo un buen enfoque a la hora de juzgar las habilidades artísticas de los demás. Tres artistas se han destacado durante los últimos 12 meses y creo que la recompensa es justa: Rafael Grampá por su siniestro, muy detallado e inquietantemente hermoso “Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham”, Travis Charest por su breve pero sorprendente contribución a “The Ambassadors” y Mark Buckingham por su notable “Miracleman: The Silver Age”.

El único propósito de una portada es ser estéticamente superior a todas las demás. Al fin y al cabo es lo primero que vemos y lo que nos incita a sujetar un cómic en las manos. La portada debe ser preciosa. No es fácil encontrar grandes portadas mensualmente, pero algunos artistas me han sorprendido gratamente con su producción: Mark Brooks por sus impresionantes portadas para “Immortal X-Men”, llenas de color y atractivos diseños; Mark Buckingham por sus espectaculares ilustraciones para “Miracleman: The Silver Age” y Steve Skroce, por su llamativo y enérgico trabajo en “Clobberin' Time”.

A veces no prestamos atención a los editores, pero ellos trabajan constantemente para brindarnos los mejores cómics posibles. En este caso, el premio es para Keith Richardson (Rebellion / 2000 AD) por crear la magnífica línea de novelas gráficas y tomos recopilatorios de 2000 AD.

Polémica e impactante, esta es una serie sólo para lectores maduros.

Tan pronto como comencé con las nominaciones para Nueva Serie, rápidamente me di cuenta de cuántos primeros números asombrosos había leído. Me encantaron “W0RLDTR33”, “Something Epic”, “Bone Orchard Tenement”, “Con & On”, “Captain America”, “Flash” y “Wonder Woman”, pero este premio no se puede compartir. Así que la única Mejor Serie Nueva es “Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham”, uno de los mayores logros artísticos del año acompañado de un guión brillante.

“America Lost & Found: The Rediscovered Scripts” merece tantos elogios como sea posible. Sin duda es la mejor colección/reimpresión de archivo que compré este año y también una de las mejores tapas duras que tengo en mi colección. ¡Rebellion realmente sabe cómo hacer una edición de tapa dura verdaderamente de lujo con magníficos extras!

Aunque tiendo a inclinarme por las editoriales estadounidenses eso no significa, de ninguna manera, que no pueda reconocer a las grandes editoriales de otros países. 2023 fue el año de Rebellion. Además del semanal 2000 AD, Rebellion ha estado publicando una maravillosa selección de tomos recopilatorios y en tapa dura, incluyendo material de hace décadas. Entonces, contra todo pronóstico, la mejor editorial de 2023 es la Británica Rebellion.

Desde hace más de una década, es una tradición anual para mí descubrir, posiblemente con semanas o meses de anticipación, qué títulos del Día del Cómic Gratis se lanzarán en mayo. November comics / cómics de noviembre

I got a few more comics than last time. And I’m glad I did. It’s been over a decade since I had so many DC monthly comics on my list. Wonder Woman and Danger Street continue to surprise me. Plot Holes has a great story and great art. Captain America was quite good. The ashcan of Animal Pound was very promising. It was great catching up on Fantastic Four and Iron Man (impressive both of them). And now, for the second month in a row, I’ll say my favorite November comic was Flash # 3, Si Spurrier and Mike Deodato Jr. are an amazing creative team. And now, without further ado, here are November comics as per solicitations:

ANIMAL POUND ASHCAN

Recibí algunos cómics más que la última vez. Y me alegro que así haya sido. Ha pasado más de una década desde que tuve tantos cómics mensuales de DC en mi lista. Wonder Woman y Danger Street me siguen sorprendiendo. Plot Holes tiene una gran historia y un gran arte. El Capitán América estuvo bastante bien. El preview de Animal Pound fue muy prometedor. Fue estupendo ponerme al día con Fantastic Four y Iron Man (ambos impresionantes). Y ahora, por segundo mes consecutivo, diré que mi cómic favorito de noviembre fue Flash # 3, Si Spurrier y Mike Deodato Jr. son un equipo creativo asombroso. November films / películas de noviembre

I was able to watch plenty of movies during Thanksgiving break, and many of them shared an element of comedy. Let’s start with Renfield (2023), directed by Chris McKay and co-written by Robert Kirkman. This is a hilarious parody / homage of the classic black and white vampire movies from the 30s; Nicolas Cage (Kick-Ass) is the evil Count Dracula while Nicholas Hoult (The Menu) is his docile servant. After decades under the employ of the count, the protagonist realizes he is indeed in a very toxic relationship and starts attending a self-help group. Can the faithful Renfield reinvent himself while his master’s constant demand for blood (and especially for virgins’ blood) comes at a shocking cost? Renfield made me laugh out loud from start to finish, and in addition to an incredibly fun story Cage and Hoult’s performances are top notch. 

Based on the homonymous novel by Casey McQuiston and directed by Matthew López, Red, White & Royal Blue (2023) is a delightful romantic comedy that deals with unexpected possibilities in the world of the elite. Uma Thurman (Kill Bill) is the president of the US, and she has sent her son, Taylor Zakhar Perez, to the most important wedding organized by the British Crown, there he meets the prince, Nicholas Galitzine. Both young men seem to be constantly in disagreement and fighting with each other; however, over time, they start developing feelings for each other. Can this infatuation survive in a long-distance setting, and furthermore, what are the dire consequences of the king of England, Stephen Fry, finding out about this forbidden affair? López creates charming characters and tender moments full of laughter, yes, it’s a romantic comedy, but a queer one.

In Angel Manuel Soto’s Blue Beetle (2023), Xolo Maridueña has recently graduated from college but is having a hard time finding a job, until he meets Bruna Marquezine, the daughter of the original Blue Beetle. The young Latino ends up bonding with a scarab that turns him into the new Blue Beetle, just in time to fight against the cruel Susan Sarandon (Blackbird). At the beginning I thought the movie could easily fall into the trap of stereotyping a Latino family, but I ended up loving the protagonist’s relatives so much. Damián Alcázar is the father and his performance is unforgettable, especially when we see the strong connection with his son. Mom, sister, uncle and grandma, they’re all funny and endearing, this family makes it impossible for the protagonist to have any privacy and keep his superhero identity as a secret, and maybe that’s the way it should be. 

 

James Gunn writes and directs Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023), the end of a beloved trilogy that reunites Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy), Bradley Cooper, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista and Karen Gillan. The Guardians of the Galaxy try to save Rocket’s life, and in the process they find out who created him, the High Evolutionary, played by Chukwudi Iwuji, a villain working with the powerful Adam Warlock, played by Will Poulter. Gunn comes up with a compelling story, a peculiar enemy, while maintaining the quirkiness and good sense of humor that characterized previous volumes. I laughed quite a bit during the movie, but I think the best part is the ending. Bittersweet and even sad, we see the disintegration of a group of superheroes that have conquered our hearts, but most importantly, we understand why all good things must come to an end. 

Rifkin’s Festival (2020), written and directed by Woody Allen, is a love letter to European classic cinema, with many black and white scenes paying homage to sequences by Truffaut, Bergman, Godard, Fellini and Buñuel. Wallace Shawn is a man obsessed with classic European filmmakers and is currently attending the San Sebastián Film Festival in Spain, with his distant wife Gina Gershon, a woman who seems to be falling in love with Louis Garrel (Saint Laurent), the most famous new French director. Jealousy, neurosis and a hypochondriac behavior take the protagonists into the arms of Elena Anaya, a beautiful and fascinating Spanish doctor who will try to take care of his health as well as his broken heart. Something absolutely necessary if we keep in mind that death, played by Christoph Waltz, is always lurking. Although it isn’t Allen’s finest production, Rifkin’s Festival is still a funny and poignant comedy about the fears and insecurities we all have, and above all, a heartfelt gratitude for the European filmmakers who revolutionized cinema in the 60s and 70s. 

Gore Verbinski’s The Weather Man (2005) is a unique film that masterfully combines dark comedy with a depressive routine that is never rewarding. Nicolas Cage works in a television network in Chicago as a weather man, the protagonist is trapped in an empty existence, even though his life could be considered as successful by everyone, after all, he makes a lot of money and he’s on TV. But he’s deeply unhappy, he’s suffering after separating from his wife, and his children are having serious problems. His son, a teenager played by Nicholas Hoult (Equals), is seduced by an older man who tries to take advantage of him, while his daughter is overweight and has lost interest in most activities. It’s heartbreaking to observe how the protagonist’s mediocrity still earns him a considerable amount of money while his father, Michael Caine, a formidable writer, isn’t rich in economical terms but is respected and admired, and above all, is an exemplary husband and father. I had seen this one before, but it gets even better a second time. An inquisitive, critical and non-conformist approach to the expectations of society and the illusion of success turned this into Verbinski’s best work to date.

Pude ver muchas películas durante el feriado de Acción de Gracias y muchas de ellas compartían un elemento de comedia. Empecemos por Renfield (2023), dirigida por Chris McKay y coescrita por Robert Kirkman. Esta es una hilarante parodia/homenaje a las clásicas películas de vampiros en blanco y negro de los 30s; Nicolas Cage (Kick-Ass) es el malévolo Conde Drácula, mientras que Nicholas Hoult (The Menu) es su dócil sirviente. Después de décadas bajo el servicio del conde, el protagonista se da cuenta de que efectivamente está en una relación muy tóxica y comienza a asistir a un grupo de autoayuda. ¿Podrá el fiel Renfield reinventarse a sí mismo mientras la constante demanda de sangre (y especialmente de sangre de vírgenes) de su tiene tiene un alto costo? Renfield me hizo reír a carcajadas de principio a fin y, además de una historia increíblemente divertida, las actuaciones de Cage y Hoult son de primer nivel.

Mamá, hermana, tío y abuela, todos son divertidos y entrañables, esta familia hace imposible que el protagonista tenga privacidad y mantenga en secreto su identidad de superhéroe, y tal vez así debería ser.

Los Guardianes de la Galaxia intentan salvar la vida de Rocket y en el proceso descubren quién lo creó, el Alto Evolucionario, interpretado por Chukwudi Iwuji, un villano que trabaja con el poderoso Adam Warlock, interpretado por Will Poulter. A Gunn se le ocurre una historia convincente, un enemigo peculiar, manteniendo la extravagancia y el buen sentido del humor que caracterizaron los volúmenes anteriores. Me reí bastante durante la película, pero creo que lo mejor es el final. Agridulce y hasta triste, vemos la desintegración de un grupo de superhéroes que han conquistado nuestros corazones, pero lo más importante es que entendemos por qué todo lo bueno debe llegar a su fin.

Rifkin’s Festival (2020), escrita y dirigida por Woody Allen, es una carta de amor al cine clásico europeo, con muchas escenas en blanco y negro que rinden homenaje a secuencias de Truffaut, Bergman, Godard, Fellini y Buñuel. Wallace Shawn es un hombre obsesionado con los cineastas clásicos europeos y actualmente asiste al Festival de Cine de San Sebastián en España, con su distante esposa Gina Gershon, una mujer que parece sentirse atraida por Louis Garrel (Saint Laurent), un nuevo y famoso director francés. Los celos, las neurosis y un comportamiento hipocondríaco llevan a los protagonistas a los brazos de Elena Anaya, una bella y fascinante doctora española que intentará cuidar de su salud además de su corazón roto. Algo absolutamente necesario si tenemos en cuenta que la muerte, interpretada por Christoph Waltz, siempre está al acecho. Aunque no es la mejor producción de Allen, Rifkin's Festival sigue siendo una comedia divertida y conmovedora sobre los miedos e inseguridades que todos tenemos y, sobre todo, un agradecimiento sincero hacia los cineastas europeos que revolucionaron el cine en los 60s y 70s.

The Weather Man (2005), de Gore Verbinski, es una película única que combina magistralmente la comedia negra con una rutina depresiva que nunca resulta gratificante. Nicolas Cage trabaja en una cadena de televisión en Chicago presentando las predicciones del clima, el protagonista está atrapado en una existencia vacía, aunque su vida podría ser considerada exitosa por todos, después de todo, gana mucho dinero y sale en la televisión. Pero es profundamente infeliz, sufre tras separarse de su esposa y sus hijos tienen serios problemas. Su hijo, un adolescente interpretado por Nicholas Hoult (Equals), es seducido por un hombre mayor que intenta aprovecharse de él, mientras que su hija tiene sobrepeso y ha perdido interés en la mayoría de las actividades. Es desgarrador observar cómo la mediocridad del protagonista todavía le permite ganar una cantidad considerable de dinero mientras su padre, Michael Caine, un escritor formidable, no es rico económicamente pero sí respetado y admirado, y sobre todo, es un marido y padre ejemplar. Ya la había visto antes, pero mejora aún más la segunda vez. Una aproximación inquisitiva, crítica e inconformista a las expectativas de la sociedad y la ilusión del éxito la convierten en la mejor obra de Verbinski hasta la fecha.

October comics / cómics de octubre

Last month I didn’t get that many comics, but the ones I got were good. The first issue of Unnatural Order showed some promise. Plot Holes and Danger Street continue to be surprisingly good. The second issue of Captain America and Wonder Woman were strong contenders for the ‘best of the month’ recognition, however, I must say my favorite October comic turned out to be Flash # 2. And now, without further ado, here are October comics as per solicitations:

CAPTAIN AMERICA #2

(W) J. Michael Straczynski (A/CA) Jesus Saiz. When Spider-Man interrupts date night to ask for help taking down the Sinister Six's latest plot, Captain America begrudgingly obliges. Meanwhile, more and more of Steve's former enemies are being recruited by a mysterious new threat - one seemingly connected to an enemy Steve faced long before he picked up the shield… Rated T+

DANGER STREET #10

(W) Tom King (A/CA) Jorge Fornes. All the pieces come together as the Commodore finds his new knight, the Creeper, just in time for the Outsiders to storm his castle. Will he survive their wrath? Meanwhile, Lady Cop comes steps closer to solving the mystery of the golden Helmet of Fate as the Dingbats set their plans in motion to resurrect one of their own. El mes pasado no recibí tantos cómics, pero los que llegaron a mis manos fueron de calidad. El primer número de Unnatural Order resultó prometedor. Plot Holes y Danger Street siguen siendo sorprendentemente buenos. El segundo número de Captain America y Wonder Woman fueron firmes candidatos al reconocimiento de 'lo mejor del mes', sin embargo, debo decir que mi cómic favorito de octubre resultó ser Flash #2. October films / películas de octubre

Before dressing up for Halloween, I had time to actually go to the movies to see Killers of the Flower Moon (2023), directed by Martin Scorsese. Extraordinary and fascinating film about the injustice and violence suffered by the Osage community in Oklahoma in the 20s. Oil money awakens the greed of Robert De Niro (The Family), who creates a system to exploit and take the money from the Osage people, while maintaining his reputation as a respectable businessman. De Niro easily controls and manipulates Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street), who ends up marrying Lily Gladstone, heiress to the oil fortune. In addition to the magnificent historical reconstruction and the engaging representation of indigenous cultural practices, what I admire the most about this story is the complex relationship between the protagonists, the affect that could be confused with love and at the same time the homicidal tendencies and the constant tension and suspense. An intelligent and captivating script is complemented by top notch performances, and the welcomed addition of an all-star cast including Jesse Plemons (The Power of the Dog), John Lithgow (Interstellar) and Brendan Fraser (The Whale), among others. Definitely one of the best films of the year!

Based on Paul Tremblay’s novel, Knock at the Cabin (2023) is a suspense story with horror elements, which has the audacity to also include a romantic component. I had high expectations for it, and I do believe M. Night Shyamalan does an adequate job as a director. Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) is the leader of a cult that includes Rupert Grint (Wild Target) and others; they target a gay couple, Jonathan Groff (The Matrix: Resurrections) and Ben Aldridge, and their adopted daughter, and ask them to sacrifice a member of their family to save the world. Certainyly, the source material is utter rubbish, I have no respect for plots that include religious conceptions of the apocalypse, that rely heavily on faith and the end of the world as a divine act of punishment. The story is idiotic, to say the least, and even if that isn’t Shyamalan’s fault he still decided to adapt this particular novel. Bad choice.

 

Scott Beck and Bryan Woods write and direct 65 (2023), an action-packed movie starred by Adam Driver (The Dead Don't Die), a pilot whose spaceship accidentally crashes on a primitive planet inhabited by dinosaurs. Stranded in a hostile environment the protagonist must protect a child, Ariana Greenblatt, while trying to find the scape pod which now lies miles away from the main crash site. In many ways it’s a typical sci-fi survival tale, and even if there are a few interesting moments overall it isn’t precisely memorable. 

Cameron Crowe’s We Bought a Zoo (2011) is an endearing approach to how to come to terms with loss. Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting) is a man mourning the death of his wife, and trying to get over the sadness while raising his two children. Evidently, in order to move on, it’s a good idea to move to a different house, but instead of a house, this family will choose to relocate to a zoo on the verge of bankruptcy. The zoo crew is comprised of Scarlett Johansson (Lost in Translation), Elle Fanning (A Rainy Day in New York), Patrick Fugit and Angus Macfadyen (Braveheart), really unique and funny characters that will help this family to understand that death is a part of life. There are deeply touching moments, and Crowe does a magnificent job in balancing different emotional tones, as evidenced in the richness and honesty of the relationships between the characters. I absolutely enjoyed it and I wish I would’ve seen this a decade ago!

Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat direct Competencia oficial (2021), a hilarious Spanish movie about the seduction of fame, the power of celebrities and the unique magic of the film industry. Penélope Cruz (Abre los ojos) is an extravagant and promising filmmaker who’s been tasked with working with two actors: superstar Antonio Banderas (Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios), the most famous actor in Spain and a big Hollywood celebrity and Oscar Martínez, a highly respected and admired theater actor, who despises fame and opulence. The two actors are constantly fighting, trying to prove who is the best performer but also rejecting the other’s ideologies and idiosyncrasies. A lucid and witty analysis of today’s obsession with entertainment and the role of classic actors versus shallow celebrities, Competencia oficial is an incredibly poignant film, full of humor and unforgettable moments. I highly recommend it.

Rossana Diaz Costa directs Un mundo para Julius (2021), based on Alfredo Bryce Echenique’s magnum opus, a novel that redefined Latin American narrative and that today, half a century after its publication, remains as an undisputed classic in the world of literature. Although it isn’t an easy novel to adapt, Diaz Costa accepts the challenge and rescues very specific moments from the novel and incorporates them in a film that takes place over several years, depicting the life of one of Peru’s wealthiest families and in particular of Julius, a sensitive child that feels more comfortable with the servants of the house than with his own relatives. I loved Alfredo Bryce Echenique’s cameo and I also enjoyed the fact that Julius’ mansion is actually the Museo Pedro de Osma, which is quite close to my house in Peru. Overall a good adaptation of the novel, with superb acting. Of course, many elements of the novel are left behind, but it would’ve been impossible to fit all of it in a two-hour production.

Varado en un entorno hostil, el protagonista debe proteger a una niña, Ariana Greenblatt, mientras intenta encontrar la cápsula de escape que ahora se encuentra a kilómetros de distancia del lugar principal del accidente. En muchos sentidos, es una típica historia de supervivencia de ciencia ficción, e incluso si hay algunos momentos interesantes, en general, no es muy memorable que digamos.

We Bought a Zoo (2011), de Cameron Crowe, es una aproximación entrañable a cómo afrontar la pérdida. Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting) es un hombre que está de luto por la muerte de su esposa y trata de superar la tristeza mientras cría a sus dos hijos. Evidentemente, para seguir adelante sería una buena idea mudarse a otra casa, pero en lugar de una casa, esta familia optará por trasladarse a un zoológico al borde de la quiebra. El equipo del zoológico está compuesto por Scarlett Johansson (Lost in Translation), Elle Fanning (A Rainy Day in New York), Patrick Fugit y Angus Macfadyen (Braveheart), personajes realmente únicos y divertidos que ayudarán a esta familia a comprender que la muerte es parte de la vida. Hay momentos profundamente conmovedores y Crowe hace un trabajo magnífico al equilibrar diferentes tonos emocionales, como lo demuestra la riqueza y honestidad de las relaciones entre los personajes. ¡La disfruté muchísimo y desearía haberla visto hace una década!

Mariano Cohn y Gastón Duprat dirigen Competencia oficial (2021), una desternillante película española sobre la seducción de la fama, el poder de las celebridades y la magia única de la industria cinematográfica. Penélope Cruz (Abre los ojos) es una cineasta extravagante y prometedora a la que se le ha encomendado trabajar con dos actores: la superestrella Antonio Banderas (Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios), el actor más famoso de España y una gran celebridad de Hollywood, y Oscar Martínez, un actor de teatro muy respetado y admirado, que desprecia la fama y la opulencia. Los dos actores pelean constantemente, tratando de demostrar quién es el mejor intérprete pero también rechazando las ideologías e idiosincrasias del otro. Un análisis lúcido e ingenioso de la obsesión actual por el entretenimiento y el papel de los actores clásicos frente a las celebridades superficiales, Competencia oficial es una película increíblemente astuta, llena de humor y momentos inolvidables. La recomiendo totalmente.

Rossana Díaz Costa dirige Un mundo para Julius (2021), basada en la obra maestra de Alfredo Bryce Echenique, una novela que redefinió la narrativa latinoamericana y que hoy, a medio siglo de su publicación, se mantiene como un clásico indiscutible en el mundo de la literatura. Aunque no es una novela fácil de adaptar, Díaz Costa acepta el desafío y rescata momentos muy concretos de la novela y los incorpora en una película que se desarrolla a lo largo de varios años, retratando la vida de una de las familias más acaudaladas del Perú y en particular de Julius, un niño sensible que se siente más cómodo con los sirvientes de la casa que con sus propios familiares. Me encantó el cameo de Alfredo Bryce Echenique y también disfruté el hecho de que la mansión de Julius es en realidad el Museo Pedro de Osma, que está bastante cerca de mi casa en Perú. En general una buena adaptación de la novela, con actuaciones magníficas. Por supuesto, muchos elementos de la novela quedan excluidos, pero hubiera sido imposible encajarlos todos en una producción de dos horas.
