I’ve been traveling for a month and I happen to be wearing Nike shoes right now, and who would’ve imagined that there was a mildly interesting story about how Nike became the biggest shoe brand. Air (2023) reunites Matt Damon (The Martian) and Ben Affleck (The Way Back) after 26 years. Affleck is the CEO of a struggling shoes company that is desperately trying to survive, and Damon is a middle-aged man, out of shape, who doesn’t think the concept of running shoes can apply to him, but he’s passionate about sports, basketball in particular, and he’s sure he knows who will be the next NBA megastar. Nike must persuade Michael Jordan to sign a contract with them, but why would the rising star be interested in a small company that clearly can’t compete with the big ones, or can it? There is a lot of business strategies here, a lot of planning, and a few interesting sequences. 

The real classic is Good Will Hunting (1997), directed by Gus Van Sant, based on a script by Matt Damon (The Last Duel) and Ben Affleck (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), which was incredibly successful. Damon is a young man who works as a janitor at MIT. He has a special gift for math, but he has no formal education. Nobody knows about his potential until one day he solves a theorem that was meant only for advanced mathematicians. Stellan Skarsgård  is a professor who sees the potential in a young man who is throwing away his life. He can’t help him directly, but after an arduous search for therapists, all of them give up after the first session except for Robin Williams (House of D), a man who is still grieving the loss of his wife. The protagonist starts to get to know himself and to appreciate the possibilities he has ahead of him, for the first time he falls in love with Minnie Driver, Ben Affleck is his best friend, an uneducated guy with no future, but with a good heart, who recognizes how incredibly talented his friend is, the other guys don’t contribute much except for the hilarious “jerking off into a baseball glove” moment. I’ve always loved this film, and even after rewatching it, that impressive scene of emotional confrontation between the therapist and the patient, the old man and the young man, when we can see that hardest thing is to forgive ourselves, continues to touch me deeply. Full of emotion, amazing scenes, impressive acting and memorable lines, Good Will Hunting still deserves our full attention.

For more than a decade, Darren Aronofsky has been letting us down, and after the extremely disappointing Mother, I had almost given up on him. But I had to believe in the possibility of a return to greatness. And that’s what we see in The Whale (2022), not only for the director but also for the main actor Brendan Fraser, who for the last 20 years had basically disappeared from the spotlight. Based on the theater play by Samuel D. Hunter, this heartbreaking film shows us one week in the life of a gay English professor who teaches online and hasn’t left his home in years simply because he literally can’t carry his own weight. He is morbidly obese, and his health is deteriorating quickly. One night, Ty Simpkins (Jurassic World), a religious teenager shows up at his doorstep to share church pamphlets, only to find the obese man about having a heart attack after trying to masturbate. The protagonist realizes he only has a few days to live and decides to reconnect with his daughter, who hates him, and accuses him of abandoning her. Brendan Fraser performance will leave you in tears, as we stare at his slow movements, we feel his pain and the colossal effort that a simple task like standing up requires. A compulsive eater with a destructive relation with food… just as deadly an addiction as any other. The other characters are addicted to alcohol, marijuana, etc. In Aronofsky’s universe, addiction is always there (as seen in Requiem for a Dream). With unparalleled intensity and brutal honesty, Aronofsky carves a story from the deepest and darkest corner of the human nightmare, because for some life can be an awful and asphyxiating nightmare. And yet, amidst all this horror, Brendan Fraser still cares for people, especially for the daughter that rejects him, but will he have enough time to save that relationship? Without a doubt one of the best films from 2022.

 

I always say that after the magnificent The Squid and the Whale, it has been difficult for Noah Baumbach to produce something equally impressive (White Noise came pretty close). However, he actually accomplishes something unique, beautiful, haunting and powerful with Marriage Story (2019). I never would’ve imagined that a film about a couple getting divorced could be so fascinating, and yet it is. Adam Driver (The Dead Don’t Die) owns a small independent theater company and his wife is Scarlett Johansson (Lost in Translation), a beautiful actress who works for him on all of his plays. They had a son, and they had a house and presumably a lot of love. But sometimes that isn’t enough. There is a distance between them. And finally, the idea of divorce becomes real, and when the lawyers get into the game, hell is unleashed. It was heartbreaking to observe who this couple, good people and kind, end up becoming enemies, and it’s especially worse when the lawyers exacerbate the worst part in them. But I guess that happens to everyone who gets divorced. It’s always a sad, lonely and painful process, Baumbach perfectly captures all the frustration and the anguish, and turns this into an absolutely outstanding film, one that deserves to be in the top 10 of 2019.

Affleck es el director general de una empresa de calzado a punto de quebrar y Damon es un hombre cuarentón, fuera de forma, que no cree que las zapatillas para correr puedan ser para él, pero le apasionan los deportes, el baloncesto en particular, y está seguro de saber quién será la próxima megaestrella de la NBA. Nike debe persuadir a Michael Jordan para que firme un contrato con ellos, pero ¿por qué la estrella en ascenso tendría interés en una pequeña empresa que claramente no puede competir con las grandes? No puede ayudarlo directamente, pero emprende una ardua búsqueda de terapeutas, todos se dan por vencidos después de la primera sesión, excepto Robin Williams (House of D), un hombre que todavía está de duelo por la pérdida de su esposa. El protagonista comienza a conocerse a sí mismo y a apreciar las posibilidades que tiene por delante, por primera vez se enamora de Minnie Driver, Ben Affleck es su mejor amigo, alguien sin educación y sin futuro, pero con un buen corazón, que reconoce lo increíblemente talentoso que es su amigo, algunos de los otros muchachos no contribuyen mucho, más allá de algún momento hilarante como el de "masturbarse en un guante de béisbol". Siempre me ha encantado esta película, y aún después de volver a verla, sigue conmoviendo esa impresionante escena de confrontación emocional entre el terapeuta y el paciente, el anciano y el joven, cuando podemos ver que lo más difícil es perdonarnos a nosotros mismos. Llena de emoción, escenas asombrosas, actuación impresionante y líneas memorables, Good Will Hunting aún merece toda nuestra atención.

El protagonista se da cuenta de que sólo le quedan unos días de vida y decide reconectarse con su hija, quien lo odia y lo acusa de haberla abandonado. La actuación de Brendan Fraser te dejará con lágrimas en los ojos, mientras observamos sus lentos movimientos, sentimos su dolor y el colosal esfuerzo que requiere una tarea tan simple como ponerse de pie. Es un devorador compulsivo con una relación destructiva con la comida… una adicción tan mortal como cualquier otra. Los demás personajes son adictos al alcohol, a la marihuana, etc. En el universo de Aronofsky, la adicción siempre está ahí (como se ve en Requiem for a Dream). Con una intensidad sin igual y una honestidad brutal, Aronofsky esculpe una historia desde el rincón más profundo y oscuro de la pesadilla humana, porque para algunos la vida puede ser una pesadilla horrible y asfixiante. Y, sin embargo, en medio de todo este horror, Brendan Fraser todavía se preocupa por las personas, especialmente por la hija que lo rechaza, pero ¿tendrá tiempo suficiente para salvar esa relación? Sin duda una de las mejores películas del 2022.

Pero supongo que eso le pasa a todos los que se divorcian. Siempre es un proceso triste, solitario y doloroso, Baumbach captura perfectamente toda la frustración y la angustia, y la convierte en una película absolutamente sobresaliente, que merece estar en el top 10 de 2019.
