The Avengers # 7 - Kurt Busiek & George Pérez

Years ago, when I first traveled to the US, I visited relatives in New Jersey. I found The Avengers # 27 in a newsstand, and when I bought it I became a fan. There is a reason why, through the years, I kept tracking down all the Avengers issues from the Busiek and Pérez run, which is not only my favorite but also one of the best regarded ever.

Because I could only buy some random issues here and there, in the very few comic book shops I used to go to in Lima, my Avengers collection was actually quite small. So when I got the third part of the “Live Kree or Die” saga I hadn’t read what had happened before, but I understood in a second the real relevance of “The Court Martial of Carol Danvers” (published in The Avengers # 7, August 1998).

Carol Danvers (AKA Warbird, and nowadays Captain Marvel) is under trial. Judged by her own colleagues, she must defend herself. Thor is appointed as the most impartial member of the committee, and he says: “All those here know thee to be a brave warrior and true, but thou dost face most grave charges today -- that alcoholism hath made thee derelict in thy duties, and a danger to thyself and thy fellow Avengers. If this be true, then let thy comrades aid thee -- help thee to triumph over this”. Carol has no answer, but her facial expression communicates anger and frustration.

As Earth’s mightiest heroes, the Avengers save the world on a weekly basis, fight against hundreds of villains, aliens and cosmic forces beyond human imagination. But can they fight against an addiction? Can they help one of their members to overcome alcoholism? One by one, all the Avengers testify, starting with Iron Man, who remembers how he was hesitant on offering a membership to Carol due to the possibility of her being an alcoholic, as was seen in “Too Many Avengers!”. 

The Avengers # 4 & 5

When it’s the turn of Wanda Maximoff (AKA Scarlet Witch), she decides not to mention the drinking incident that took place in “Earth’s Mightiest Frauds?”, but she remembers how much it broke her heart to see Carol Danvers departing in such a traumatic way in “By Friends --Betrayed!”. Wanda is aware of how much the Avengers failed Carol when she needed them the most. When Wanda begs her friend to find help, Carol finally breaks down. This strong, powerful and proud woman, who just seconds ago had been screaming at Thor and Captain America, cannot stop crying. When faced with accusations, Carol does her best to defend herself, but when she is faced by Wanda’s honest concern, she cannot do anything but cry. 

Warbird is no longer a member of the Avengers, and Wanda is the only one who cries because of this. The whole team then quickly goes to the moon, to fight against a group of alien mercenaries and to find the Supreme Intelligence of the Kree. Despite the court martial and all the humiliation she has endured, Carol Danvers decides to fly to the moon to help her former teammates. In the past, she was powerful enough to fly to another galaxy if she wanted to, but months of heavy drinking have severely limited her capabilities. “The woman called Warbird forges ahead -- drawing on her internal power reserves, closing off her need to breath -- forcing herself forward […] Warbird’s diminished power reaches its limits, and she convulses -- convulses and begins to fall”. Busiek’s dramatic lines combined with Pérez’s extraordinary art turn this into one of the most unforgettable moments in the history of the Avengers. Because in the end, it doesn’t matter how powerful our heroes can be, or how many victories they may have under their belts, what matters is their courage and their refusal to surrender. Carol Danvers doesn’t give up until her body betrays her. She falls down to Earth, against her will, and after landing she feels as if she has failed.

Evidence / evidencia

There are no happy endings in this story. Carol Danvers doesn’t miraculously recover from her alcoholism. The Avengers don’t invite her to be part of the team again. Carol Danvers isn’t defeated by the Kree aliens or by any external threat, she’s defeated by her own addictions. And when she proclaims, in tears, that she needs a drink, as readers we can understand her pain. The last page is, in my opinion, one of the best endings I’ve ever seen in a superhero comic book. Carol is in the same bar she always goes to, and she has a glass of whisky in front of her. Somebody asks if she is going to drink it. She holds the glass, with a defeated look on her face, and answers “I don’t know”.

Hace años, cuando viajé por primera vez a Estados Unidos, visité a familiares en New Jersey. Allí encontré The Avengers # 27 en un quiosco, y cuando lo compré me convertí en un fan. Hay una razón por la que, a lo largo de los años, seguí rastreando todos los números de los Avengers de la etapa de Busiek y Pérez, que no sólo es mi favorita, sino también una de las más celebradas de la historia.

Debido a que sólo podía comprar algunos números al azar aquí y allá, en las pocas tiendas de cómics a las que solía ir en Lima, mi colección de los Avengers era bastante pequeña. Así que cuando adquirí la tercera parte de la saga “Vive Kree o muere” no había leído lo que había pasado antes, pero comprendí en un segundo la verdadera relevancia de “La corte marcial de Carol Danvers” (publicado en The Avengers # 7, agosto de 1998).

Carol Danvers (alias Warbird, y hoy Capitana Marvel) está bajo juicio. Juzgada por sus propios colegas, debe defenderse. Thor es designado como el miembro más imparcial del comité y dice: "Todos aquellos que aquí están os conocen como una guerrera valiente y leal, pero hoy os enfrentais a los cargos más graves: que el alcoholismo os ha vuelto negligente en vuestros deberes, y un peligro para vos misma y vuestros compañeros Vengadores. Si acaso esto sea cierto, entonces dejad que vuestros camaradas os ayuden -- os ayuden a salir triunfante”. Carol no tiene respuesta, pero su expresión facial transmite ira y frustración.

Como los héroes más poderosos de la Tierra, los Vengadores salvan el mundo semanalmente, luchan contra cientos de villanos, alienígenas y fuerzas cósmicas más allá de la imaginación humana. Pero, ¿pueden luchar contra una adicción? ¿Pueden ayudar a uno de sus miembros a superar el alcoholismo? Uno por uno, todos los Vengadores testifican, comenzando por Iron Man, quien recuerda cómo dudaba al ofrecer una membresía a Carol debido a la posibilidad de que ella fuera alcohólica, como se vio en “¡Demasiados Vengadores!”.

Cuando le toca el turno a Wanda Maximoff (también conocida como la Bruja Escarlata), decide no mencionar el incidente con la bebida que tuvo lugar en “¿Los fraudes más poderosos de la Tierra?”, Pero recuerda que se le rompió el corazón al ver a Carol Danvers partir en una situación tan traumática en "Traicionada por amigos". Wanda es consciente de cuánto le fallaron los Vengadores a Carol cuando más los necesitaba. Cuando Wanda le ruega a su amiga que busque ayuda, Carol finalmente se derrumba. Esta mujer fuerte, poderosa y orgullosa, que hace apenas unos segundos le había estado gritando a Thor y al Capitán América, no puede dejar de llorar. Cuando se enfrenta a las acusaciones, Carol hace todo lo posible por defenderse, pero cuando se enfrenta a la honesta preocupación de Wanda, no puede hacer nada más que llorar.

Warbird ya no es miembro de los Vengadores, y Wanda es la única que llora por esto. Luego, todo el equipo va rápidamente a la luna, para luchar contra un grupo de mercenarios alienígenas y encontrar la Inteligencia Suprema de los Kree. A pesar del consejo de guerra y toda la humillación que ha sufrido, Carol Danvers decide volar a la luna para ayudar a sus excompañeros. En el pasado, era lo suficientemente poderosa como para volar a otra galaxia si quería, pero meses de beber en exceso han limitado gravemente sus capacidades. “La mujer llamada Warbird avanza - alimentándose de sus reservas de energía internas, eliminando su necesidad de respirar - forzándose hacia adelante [...] El poder disminuido de Warbird alcanza sus límites, y ella convulsiona - convulsiona y comienza a caer”. Las líneas dramáticas de Busiek combinadas con el extraordinario arte de Pérez convierten este en uno de los momentos más inolvidables en la historia de los Vengadores. Porque al final, no importa cuán poderosos puedan ser nuestros héroes, o cuántas victorias puedan tener en su haber, lo que importa es su coraje y su negativa a rendirse. Carol Danvers no se rinde hasta que su cuerpo la traiciona. Ella cae a la Tierra, contra su voluntad, y después del duro aterrizaje siente que ha fracasado.

No hay finales felices en esta historia. Carol Danvers no se recupera milagrosamente de su alcoholismo. Los Vengadores no la invitan a volver a formar parte del equipo. Carol Danvers no es derrotada por los extraterrestres Kree ni por ninguna amenaza externa, es derrotada por sus propias adicciones. Y cuando ella proclama, entre lágrimas, que necesita un trago, como lectores podemos entender su dolor. La última página es, en mi opinión, uno de los mejores finales que he visto en un cómic de superhéroes. Carol está en el mismo bar al que siempre va y tiene un vaso de whisky frente a ella. Alguien le pregunta si se lo va a beber. Ella sostiene el vaso, con una mirada de derrota en el rostro, y responde “No lo sé”.

Young Avengers: Prelude - Kieron Gillen & Jamie McKelvie

 2013 was the year of the Young Avengers. Or at least it was for me. Sure, for those who have good memory, 2005 was the real year of the Young Avengers, that’s when the first issue came out and that’s when Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung proved to the whole world that not only it was possible to have a couple of gay teenagers as the main characters of the title, but also that it was necessary and it was about damn time. 

I didn’t have a chance to read the original Young Avengers series in 2005; of course I bought all the issues a few years later and enjoyed them tremendously. But I was missing the experience of reading it on a monthly basis. Fortunately for me, at the end of 2012 Marvel Comics announced a new Young Avengers series by Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie. I wasn’t sure what to expect from it. Could it be nearly as good as Heinberg’s series? I decided to get the first issue and I absolutely loved it. Every month I looked forward to getting my package of comics and reading the new issue of Young Avengers was pure pleasure. And in issue # 4, my letter was published and Gillen himself answered to it in a witty and hilarious way that was only befitting of a title that made me laugh out loud so much. 

Although I’ve had letters published in The Walking Dead or Thor, nothing could’ve given me a greater satisfaction than seeing my words in the letter column of the best comic book published in 2013. It’s no coincidence that in the same year, Young Avengers won most of the Arion’s Achievement Awards (Best Writer, Best Artist, Best Single Issue and Best Ongoing Series). 

Ms America

I made sure to review every single issue, but I had completely forgotten that before the first issue there was an issue # 0, or so to speak. Marvel Now Point One # 1 (published in December 2012), included among other stories “The New World”, by Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie, Mike Norton and Matthew Wilson (the same creative team that would be in charge of the ongoing series in 2013). I can’t believe that it has taken me literally 7 years to find this prelude, read it and review it, but hey, better late than never, right?

In this story Kid Loki has a rather violent lunch with Miss America. It’s the first encounter between the two of them and it ends in a fight (they don’t know they’ll become teammates very soon). Of course, before the fight Gillen offers us hilarious moments, plenty of witty retorts and a unique sense of rebelliousness that really allows the readers to understand how different, and yet how faithful to the original, is this new iteration of the Young Avengers. And the art is beyond impressive, McKelvie’s clear lines and beautiful sense of design turn every page into a delicious visual feast (even more appetizing than the Korean barbecue Loki seems to be so fond of). 

One of the details I love the most is the flyer Kid Loki gives to us, the readers, which is a clever way of breaking the fourth wall but also a joke that works wonderfully by itself: “Are you young? Wild? Free? Only able to buy beer with a fake ID? Do your hobbies include saving the world all night and then trying to find a place that has a good 5am breakfast?”. The next part cracked me up so much, Kid Loki is in serious need of “Thousands upon thousands of devoted readers, who are beautiful, strong, kind, discerning, and -most of all- numerous”. Yes, the flyer is a call for young superheroes, but above all, it’s a call for an audience, a call that I  answered 7 years ago. And I’m so happy that I did.

El 2013 fue el año de los Young Avengers. O al menos lo fue para mí. Claro, para los que tienen buena memoria, 2005 fue el verdadero año de los Young Avengers, fue entonces cuando salió el primer número y fue entonces cuando Allan Heinberg y Jim Cheung le demostraron al mundo entero que no sólo era posible tener a un par de adolescentes homosexuales como los protagonistas principales del cómic, sino también que era justo y necesario.

Kid Loki

No tuve la oportunidad de leer la serie original de Young Avengers en el 2005; por supuesto, compré todos los números unos años después y los disfruté tremendamente. Pero me estaba perdiendo la experiencia de leer mensualmente. Afortunadamente para mí, a finales del 2012 Marvel Comics anunció una nueva serie de Young Avengers de Kieron Gillen y Jamie McKelvie. No estaba seguro de qué esperar. ¿Podría ser tan buena como la serie de Heinberg? Decidí adquirir el primer número y me encantó. Cada mes esperaba recibir mi paquete de cómics y el nuevo número de Young Avengers era placer puro. Y en el número 4, se publicó mi carta y el propio Gillen la respondió de una manera ingeniosa e hilarante que solamente podía corresponder a una colección que me hizo reír tanto.

Aunque he tenido cartas publicadas en The Walking Dead o Thor, nada podría haberme dado mayor satisfacción que ver mis palabras en la columna de cartas del mejor cómic publicado del 2013. No es casualidad que en el mismo año, Young Avengers ganó la mayoría de los Arion's Achievement Awards (mejor guionista, mejor artista, mejor edición individual y mejor serie en curso).

Me aseguré de reseñar todos y cada uno de los números, pero me había olvidado por completo que antes del primer número había un número 0, por así decirlo. Marvel Now Point One # 1 (publicado en diciembre de 2012), incluye entre otras historias "The New World", de Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie, Mike Norton y Matthew Wilson (el mismo equipo creativo que estaría a cargo de la serie en curso en 2013). No puedo creer que me haya tomado literalmente 7 años encontrar este preludio, leerlo y reseñarlo, pero bueno, más vale tarde que nunca, ¿verdad?

Miss America versus Kid Loki

En esta historia, Kid Loki tiene un almuerzo bastante violento con Miss América. Es el primer encuentro entre los dos y termina en una pelea (no saben que pronto se convertirán en compañeros de equipo). Por supuesto, antes de la pelea, Gillen nos ofrece momentos divertidos, muchas respuestas ingeniosas y un sentido único de rebeldía que realmente permite a los lectores comprender cuán diferente y, sin embargo, cuán fiel al original es esta nueva versión de los Jóvenes Vengadores. Y el arte es más que impresionante, las líneas claras y el hermoso sentido del diseño de McKelvie convierten cada página en un delicioso festín visual (incluso más apetitoso que la barbacoa coreana que a Loki parece entusiasmarle tanto).

Uno de los detalles que más me gustan es el volante que nos da Kid Loki a los lectores, que es una forma inteligente de romper la cuarta pared, pero también una broma que funciona de maravilla por sí sola: “¿Eres joven? ¿Salvaje? ¿Desocupado? ¿Sólo puedes comprar cerveza con una identificación falsa? ¿Tus pasatiempos incluyen salvar el mundo toda la noche y luego tratar de encontrar un lugar que tenga un buen desayuno a las 5am? ”. La siguiente parte me hizo reír tanto, Kid Loki tiene una gran necesidad de “Miles y miles de lectores devotos, que sean hermosos, fuertes, amables, exigentes y, sobre todo, numerosos”. Sí, el volante es una convocatoria para jóvenes superhéroes, pero sobre todo, es una convocatoria de público, una llamada que respondí hace 7 años. Y estoy tan feliz de haberlo hecho.

Quino (1932-2020)

I grew up reading Mafalda, just like many thousands of readers. It is strange that until now I have not saved room for Quino, Joaquín Salvador Lavado, one of the most brilliant creators in the Spanish-speaking world. A master cartoonist and talented writer and artist, Quino expertly captured a particular time, a series of ideals and dreams, in the seemingly mundane context of Mafalda and her friends. With keen reflections, a critical attitude and a clear political stance, Quino transformed that comic strip into a masterpiece that deserves to be read and reread, always honored and celebrated.

In addition to Mafalda, an indisputable classic, I have also greatly enjoyed reading "Quinoterapia" and "How bad people can be!" among many other works of great quality. As a comic book author, I must say that telling a story is always difficult. Doing it in a couple of pages is a big challenge. Doing it on one page or less than one page is incredibly difficult. Doing it in just a 2 or 3 panel comic strip is impossible unless you have the intelligence, humor, and wisdom of someone like Quino. For years and decades, Quino was able to make us laugh and cry, and even cry with laughter, with his comic strips. We will never forget him.

Crecí leyendo a Mafalda, al igual que miles de lectores. Es extraño que hasta ahora no le haya dedicado un espacio a Quino, Joaquín Salvador Lavado, uno de los más brillantes creadores en lengua hispana. Maestro caricaturista y talentoso guionista y dibujante, Quino plasmó con pericia una época en particular, una serie de ideales y sueños, en el contexto aparentemente cotidiano de Mafalda y sus amigos. Con reflexiones agudas, una actitud crítica y una clara postura política, Quino transformó aquella tira cómica en una obra maestra, que merecía ser leída y releída, siempre homenajeada y celebrada. 

Además de Mafalda, clásico indiscutible, también he disfrutado enormemente con la lectura de “Quinoterapia” y “¡Qué mala es la gente!” entre muchas otras obras de gran calibre. Como autor de cómics, debo decir que narrar una historia es siempre difícil. Hacerlo en un par de páginas es un gran reto. Hacerlo en una página o en menos de una página es increíblemente difícil. Hacerlo en apenas una tira de 2 o 3 viñetas es imposible a menos que uno tenga la inteligencia, el humor y la sabiduría de alguien como Quino. Durante años y décadas, Quino fue capaz de hacernos reír y hasta llorar, e incluso llorar de la risa, con sus tiras cómicas. Nunca lo olvidaremos.

Legends of the Dark Knight Annual # 5 - Chuck Dixon & Quique Alcatena

In 1970, Frank Robbins and Neal Adams created the perfect adversary for Batman: Man-Bat! Even the name made perfect sense. Instead of having a man dressed as a bat to fight crime we have a bat in the shape of a man committing crimes although due to the beastly nature of the Man-Bat, one could argue that those are not in fact real crimes. 

The idea behind Man-Bat is reminiscent of literary classics such as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. We have this idea of a scientist who comes up with some sort of potion; upon drinking that potion this man, who is usually described as a very professional and intelligent individual, with high moral values and also a natural kindness in his heart, id est Dr. Jekyll, due to the potion will eventually be transformed into an opposite version of himself, a monster not only physically but also morally, id est Mr. Hyde. Here Dr. Kirk Langstrom is a zoologist with a specialization in the field of chiropterology, and he invents a strange serum and tests it on himself.

In “Wings” (July 1995), writer Chuck Dixon takes advantage of the concept of Batman as an urban legend, who is represented in newspapers as a bat creature, so there is certainly a lot of similarities between the hero and his adversary. Dixon also manages to tell a compelling story that involves Kirk Langstrom working as a scientist dealing with his insecurities and his fear of having a loving relationship with the woman of his dreams. After drinking the serum he is slowly turning into a monster, and we get to see the frustration, the pain and the emotional turmoil that the character goes through. 

This story would not be the same without the magnificent art by Argentinian artist Quique Alcatena, whose precise brushes and inks give every page a unique texture, in which the amount of details is considerable. Every figure and every character help to create a notion of darkness. Alcatena is the perfect artist for gothic horror and we can see that in many of his designs, which celebrate dark Gothic architecture; in his representation of Batman, especially, we can see a darker than night figure, reminiscent of the designs that Leonardo da Vinci did while analyzing the wings of a bat. 

Alfred Pennyworth & Bruce Wayne

Alcatena combines all of this into fascinating pages. I would consider this one of the best works in his career. Of course some of my favorite panels involve Man-Bat, but there is one in particular in which he is just holding the phone sitting on his bed and he looks absolutely miserable, he is indeed a monster but also a monster who dreams to become human again. Man-Bat therefore is not the typical villain that Batman must fight against. Man-Bat is a man trapped in a bad decision: he is Mr. Hyde trying to turn back into Dr. Jekyll. And of course Batman will help him achieve that goal.

En lugar de tener un hombre vestido de murciélago para combatir el crimen, tenemos a un murciélago de forma humanoide que comete crímenes, aunque debido a la naturaleza bestial de Man-Bat, se podría argumentar que esos no son crímenes reales.

Dr. Kirk Langstrom

La idea detrás de Man-Bat recuerda a clásicos literarios como Dr. Jekyll y Mr. Hyde. Tenemos la idea de un científico que inventa algún tipo de poción; Al beber esa poción, este hombre, que generalmente se describe como un individuo muy profesional e inteligente, con altos valores morales y también una bondad natural en su corazón, o sea Dr. Jekyll, debido a la poción eventualmente se transformará en una versión opuesta de sí mismo, un monstruo no sólo físicamente sino también moralmente, o sea Mr. Hyde. Aquí el Dr. Kirk Langstrom es un zoólogo con especialización en el campo de la quiropterología, e inventa un suero extraño que prueba en sí mismo.

Miserable

En “Alas” (julio 1995), el escritor Chuck Dixon aprovecha el concepto de Batman como una leyenda urbana, que se retrata en los periódicos como una criatura tipo murciélago, por lo que ciertamente hay muchas similitudes entre el héroe y su adversario. Dixon también logra contar una historia convincente que involucra a Kirk Langstrom trabajando como científico y lidiando con sus inseguridades y su miedo de tener una relación amorosa con la mujer de sus sueños. Después de beber el suero, poco a poco se está convirtiendo en un monstruo, y podemos ver la frustración, el dolor y la confusión emocional que atraviesa el personaje.

Man-Bat versus Batman

Esta historia no sería la misma sin el magnífico arte del artista argentino Quique Alcatena, cuyos precisos pinceles y tintas dan a cada página una textura única, en la que la cantidad de detalles es considerable. Cada figura y cada personaje ayudan a crear una noción de oscuridad. Alcatena es el artista perfecto para el horror gótico y lo podemos ver en muchos de sus diseños, que celebran la arquitectura gótica oscura; en su representación de Batman, sobre todo, podemos ver una figura más oscura que la noche, que recuerda los diseños que hizo Leonardo da Vinci al analizar las alas de un murciélago.

Batcave

Alcatena combina todo esto en páginas fascinantes. Consideraría que este es uno de los mejores trabajos de su carrera. Por supuesto, algunas de mis viñetas favoritas involucran a Man-Bat, pero hay una en particular en la que él simplemente sostiene el teléfono sentado en su cama y se ve absolutamente miserable, de hecho es un monstruo, pero también un monstruo que sueña con convertirse en humano nuevamente. Por tanto, Man-Bat no es el típico villano contra el que Batman debe luchar. Man-Bat es un hombre atrapado en una mala decisión: es el Sr. Hyde que intenta volver a convertirse en el Dr. Jekyll. Y, por supuesto, Batman lo ayudará a lograr ese objetivo.

September comics / Cómics de setiembre

A couple of days after moving to my new apartment here in Davis, I was welcomed with a box of comics, and unlike previous months, this time the box wasn’t half empty, it was full! I was so happy to get the deluxe hardcover edition of John Byrne’s Superman: the Man of Steel vol. 1! The Boys Dear Becky and Strange Adventures continue to amaze me, the Legion of Super-Heroes was good too, however my favorite comic of the month was X-Men: Marvels Snapshots! And once again this year the best FCBD book was the aptly titled Best of 2000AD! And now without further ado here are September comics as per solicitations:

BOOKS OF MAGIC #1

(W) Kat Howard (A) Tom Fowler (CA) Kai Carpenter. From the SANDMAN UNIVERSE #1, it's the return of Neil Gaiman's magical morality fable in an all-new series written by Kat Howard (Roses and Rot, An Unkindness of Magicians) and drawn by Tom Fowler (DOOM PATROL)! Timothy Hunter may be destined tobecome the most powerful magician in the universe, but he's still a London teenager, and having magical abilities complicates things more than it helps. It's not like he can use magic to pass his exams, stop being bullied or convince his cute friend to date him. And while Tim's trying to live his life, there are cultists who want to kill him, believing his power will eventually corrupt him into becoming a merciless mage. Oh, and those are the good guys. Luckily, his new substitute teacher is more than she appears, and may be able to help Tim discover the mystery behind the Books of Magic…

BOOKS OF MAGIC #2

September films / películas de setiembre

Unlike previous months, in September I was able to watch a couple of absolutely new productions, including Christopher Nolan’s newest project Tenet (2020), I’ve always been a Nolan fan and I think the way he works with time travel and time paradoxes in Tenet gives us as a result one of the most unique and mind-blowing science fiction films of recent years; however I also feel like it’s a bit difficult to stay emotionally connected to Tenet (in my opinion, the same happens with Dunkirk), and it can also be unnecessarily confusing. The protagonist is John David Washington, a man tasked with the difficult mission of saving the world while learning about a very special way of altering time. The all-star cast includes Robert Pattinson (very solid performance), Elizabeth Debicki (extraordinary in her role as a femme fatale), Michael Caine (who is as amazing as ever, my favorite scene happens to be the one focused on him), Kenneth Branagh (great as a villain) and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (who I was barely able to recognize, evidence enough of his complete transformation for this role). Once again, Tenet might not be the best Nolan film but I’ll surely include it in my list of the best of 2020. 

Arkansas (2020), directed and starred by Clark Duke, is a very down to Earth take on drug dealers in the state of Arkansas. Liam Hemsworth (Paranoia) is a reckless and ambitious young man who thinks that drug dealing might be the solution to all of his financial problems, Clark Duke becomes his partner in crime, and together, under the tutelage of John Malkovich (Being John Malkovich), they live a secret life as drug dealers while pretending to be park rangers. They’re far down the hierarchy and yet they dream about meeting their boss, Vince Vaughn, whose empire of illegal substances is about to crumble down in the most unexpected way. Arkansas is an honest, visceral and realistic exploration of a topic that is often glorified or exaggerated in Hollywood; the lives of these drug dealers are anything but glamorous, they don’t make millions of dollars and even the slightest mistake can (and will) cost them their lives. 

Bill Condon’s The Good Liar (2019) is a fascinating film that celebrates the talent of two of the most remarkable British actors: Helen Mirren (Woman in Gold) and Sir Ian McKellen (Apt Pupil). McKellen is a clever and manipulative old man who is an expert scammer, without violence or threats, he has been able to stole thousands of pounds from his unsuspecting victims, but when he goes out on a date with Mirren, a charming old woman who has inherited a fortune, the protagonist sharpens his teeth and is ready to attack. Condon magnificently creates two strong, original and very peculiar characters, and while on one level there is a confrontation between truth and lies, on a higher level there is a refreshing and inspiring battle of acting skills, in which the only winners are the viewers. Nothing is what it seems to be in this captivating tale about lies, appearances and the strange emotional connections that can take place between two aging but brilliant individuals. This is definitely one of the best films of 2019. I highly recommend it. 

From Iceland comes Hjartasteinn (2016), written and directed by Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson. This tragic and touching coming of age tale revolves around two teenagers, Baldur Einarsson, a 13-year old boy who spends most of his free time with his best friend, Blær Hinriksson, who happens to be a couple of years older. The younger boy admires his friend’s hairy armpits, and they constantly play with each other, joking, touching each other’s crotches, threatening to kiss each other, masturbating and so on. However, when Baldur meets a girl, he starts losing interest in his friend, and in that moment there is a reversal of roles, and it’s now the friend who starts feeling an attraction that no one understands or condones in the small fishing village in which they live. Hjartasteinn delves deep into the unhealed wounds of conservative societies, and shows us how traumatic it can be to grow up as a homosexual kid in a rural setting. Bittersweet, dramatic and compelling, this Icelandic film breaks the ice in every way that matters.

Marc Brummund’s Freistatt (2015) is a historical German production that takes place in the late 60s. Louis Hofmann is a 14-year-old boy who is sent to the strictest juvenile detention center in Germany after developing an incestuous relationship with his mother. This isolated place is, in fact, worse than a prisoners’ camp; and the warden and his henchmen mistreat, abuse and torture all the underage boys that live there. Without a way to escape or inform their families about what truly happens in this nightmarish place, the boys become aggressive and attack each other constantly. When the protagonist isn’t fighting against the depraved adults that control his life, he must fight against the other kids around him. In such a bleak and terrible scenario, it isn’t surprising to see stories of desperation, moments of pain and many situations involving sexual abuse and torture, and . Based on real life events, this dramatic tale highlights the strength of a boy who never surrenders and who, above all, intends to preserve the human dignity that everyone else has lost. 

 

Written and directed by Michael Pavone, That’s What I Am (2011) is a story about acceptance and also about the courage it takes to understand who we truly are. Chase Ellison is a 12-year-old boy who complains about having to work together with Alexander Walters, a boy ostracized and ridiculed by the school bullies. However, after spending time together, a strong friendship between the boys begins. It’s 1965 and  discrimination and prejudice are at the heart of this story. When the school’s best teacher, Ed Harris (Run All Night), is accused of being a homosexual and threatened with being fired, the boys in his class understand the consequences of living in an intolerant society. With a calm and yet firm pulse, Pavone aptly transmits the inner conflict of his characters.

A diferencia de meses anteriores, en setiembre pude ver un par de producciones absolutamente nuevas, incluyendo el proyecto más reciente de Christopher Nolan, Tenet (2020). Siempre he sido fan de Nolan y creo que la forma en la que trabaja con los viajes en el tiempo y las paradojas temporales en Tenet da como resultado una de las películas de ciencia ficción más singulares y alucinantes de los últimos años; sin embargo, también siento que es un poco difícil permanecer conectado emocionalmente con Tenet (en mi opinión, lo mismo sucede con Dunkirk), y también puede ser innecesariamente confuso. El protagonista es John David Washington, un hombre encargado de la difícil misión de salvar al mundo mientras descubre una forma muy especial de alterar el tiempo. The Good Liar (2019) de Bill Condon es una película fascinante que celebra el talento de dos de los actores británicos más notables: Helen Mirren (Woman in Gold) y Sir Ian McKellen (Apt Pupil). McKellen es un anciano inteligente y manipulador, un experto estafador, sin violencia ni amenazas, ha podido robar miles de libras a sus desprevenidas víctimas, pero cuando tiene una cita con Mirren, una encantadora anciana que ha heredado una fortuna, el protagonista afila los dientes y está listo para atacar. Condon crea magníficamente dos personajes fuertes, originales y muy peculiares, y mientras en un primer nivel hay un enfrentamiento entre la verdad y la mentira, en un segundo nivel hay una refrescante e inspiradora batalla de habilidades actorales, en la que los únicos ganadores son los espectadores. Nada es lo que parece ser en esta cautivadora historia sobre mentiras, apariencias y las extrañas conexiones emocionales que pueden ocurrir entre dos personas mayores pero brillantes. Esta es definitivamente una de las mejores películas del 2019. La recomiendo.

De Islandia llega Hjartasteinn (2016), escrita y dirigida por Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson. Esta trágica y conmovedora historia sobre el paso de una edad a otra, gira en torno a dos adolescentes, Baldur Einarsson, un chico de 13 años que pasa la mayor parte de su tiempo libre con su mejor amigo, Blær Hinriksson, que es un par de años mayor. El niño más joven admira las axilas peludas de su amigo, y constantemente juegan entre ellos, bromeando, tocándose mutuamente la entrepierna, amenazándose con besarse, masturbándose, etc. Sin embargo, cuando Baldur conoce a una chica, empieza a perder interés en su amigo, y en ese momento se produce un cambio de roles, y ahora es el amigo quien empieza a sentir una atracción que nadie entiende ni tolera en el pequeño pueblo de pescadores en el que ellos viven. Hjartasteinn profundiza en las heridas sin curar de las sociedades conservadoras y nos muestra lo traumático que puede ser crecer como un muchacho homosexual en un entorno rural. Agridulce, dramática y cautivadora, esta película islandesa rompe el hielo en todo sentido.

 

Freistatt (2015) de Marc Brummund es una producción histórica alemana ambientada a fines de los 60s. Louis Hofmann es un chaval de 14 años que es enviado al centro de detención juvenil más estricto de Alemania tras desarrollar una relación incestuosa con su madre. Este lugar aislado es, de hecho, peor que un campo de prisioneros; y el alcaide y sus secuaces maltratan, abusan y torturan a todos los muchachos menores de edad que viven allí. Sin una forma de escapar o informar a sus familias sobre lo que realmente sucede en este lugar de pesadilla, los chicos se vuelven agresivos y se atacan constantemente. Cuando el protagonista no está luchando contra los adultos depravados que controlan su vida, debe luchar contra los otros chiquillos a su alrededor. En un escenario tan desolador y terrible, no es sorprendente ver historias de desesperación, momentos de dolor y muchas situaciones que involucran abuso sexual y tortura. Basado en hechos de la vida real, este relato dramático destaca la fuerza de un chico que nunca se rinde y que, sobre todo, pretende preservar la dignidad humana que todos los demás han perdido.

 

Escrita y dirigida por Michael Pavone, That’s What I Am (2011) es una historia sobre la aceptación y también sobre el coraje que se necesita para comprender quiénes somos realmente. Chase Ellison es un niño de 12 años que se queja de tener que trabajar con Alexander Walters, un chico condenado al ostracismo y ridiculizado por los matones de la escuela. Sin embargo, después de pasar tiempo juntos, comienza una fuerte amistad entre los chicos. Es 1965 y la discriminación y los prejuicios están en el corazón de esta historia. Cuando el mejor maestro de la escuela, Ed Harris (Run All Night), es acusado de ser homosexual y amenazado con ser despedido, los niños de su clase comprenden las consecuencias de vivir en una sociedad intolerante.
