September Comics / cómics de setiembre

And now I’m almost done catching up with recent comics. I got the first issue of Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham because I love Rafael Grampá’s art, but his writing is also stellar! The first issue of Captain America was great, I’ll definitely be getting the next ones. Danger Street and Plot Holes continue to be good. The conclusion of Red Room was intense, Piskor always manages to shock his readers. It’s been ages since I last bought a regular DC Universe comic, and this time I decided to give a chance to the first issues of Wonder Woman and Flash. At last, but not least, my favorite comic of the month was Miracleman, Gaiman’s take on repressed trauma and childhood abuse is a real example of magnificent writing. And now, without further ado, here are September comics, as per solicitations:

Y ahora casi he terminado de ponerme al día con los cómics recientes. Adquirí el primer número de Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham porque me encanta el arte de Rafael Grampá, ¡pero su escritura también es estelar! El primer número de Capitán América fue estupendo, definitivamente compraré los siguientes. Danger Street y Plot Holes siguen siendo buenos. La conclusión de Red Room fue intensa, Piskor siempre logra impactar a sus lectores. Han pasado años desde la última vez que compré un cómic normal del DC Universe, y esta vez decidí darle una oportunidad a los primeros números de Wonder Woman y Flash. Por último, pero no menos importante, mi cómic favorito del mes fue Miracleman. La visión de Gaiman sobre el trauma reprimido y el abuso infantil es un verdadero ejemplo de magnífica escritura. August Comics / cómics de agosto

Yes, I’m 2 months behind but I’m finally catching up. The conclusion of X-Cellent wasn’t necessarily excellent, but still good enough. Immortal X-Men was surprisingly good (kudos to Kieron Gillen). Something Epic and Danger Street continue to be welcomed additions to my pull list. The first issue of Con & On was a lot of fun. And I really enjoyed the Marvel Age anthology, especially the story by Straczynski about the Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko. If I had to choose my favorite comic of the month it would be The Plot Holes # 1, great art and a great script courtesy of the always fantastic Sean Gordon Murphy. And now, without further ado, here are August comics, as per solicitations:

Sí, llevo 2 meses de tardanza pero finalmente me estoy poniendo al día. La conclusión de X-Cellent no fue necesariamente excelente, pero sí aceptable. Immortal X-Men fue sorprendentemente bueno (felicitaciones a Kieron Gillen). Something Epic y Danger Street siguen siendo bienvenidas a mi lista mensual. El primer número de Con & On fue muy divertido. Y realmente disfruté la antología Marvel Age, especialmente la historia de Straczynski sobre Stan Lee, Jack Kirby y Steve Ditko. Si tuviera que elegir mi cómic favorito del mes sería The Plot Holes #1, gran arte y un gran guión cortesía del siempre fantástico Sean Gordon Murphy. September films / películas de setiembre

After traveling in Europe for a month, I decided to visit Milwaukee for a week. And of course I had time to admire the performance of one of my favorite actors of recent years. Let’s start with Little Women (2019), directed by Greta Gerwig (Barbie) and based on Louisa May Alcott’s homonymous novel; we see the lives of 4 sisters that love each other and that despite their many talents seem to have no other options in life except for getting married. Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird) loves to write and has a lot of talent, but she can’t take criticism from his friend Louis Garrel (Saint Laurent); Emma Watson (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) is interested in becoming an actress but she must forget about her dreams and find a husband, Eliza Scanlen tries to battle against her illnesses while Florence Pugh (Midsommar) spends time with her rich aunt, Meryl Streep (Let Them All Talk), who explains the importance of marrying to a wealthy man, such as Timothée Chalamet (The King), heir to a local millionaire. Top notch performances, dramatic moments and a respectful and yet innovative approach to the source material turn this into one of the best literary adaptations of recent years. 

I usually enjoy experimental movies, but One & Two (2015) was perhaps a bit too much for me. Timothée Chalamet (Beautiful Boy) and Kiernan Shipka are brother and sister, living under the strict rules of their parents, religious zealots that keep them isolated. The two teenagers have an amazing superpower: teleportation. They could go anywhere they want but they don’t know that the world is bigger than the yard in front of the house. I’m guessing the director, Andrew Droz Palermo, had a lot of ideas about religion and death that he wanted to explore but somehow none of that gets any development here. At least what remains clear to us is that love between siblings can overcome all obstacles. 

Scott Cooper's Hostiles (2017) is a touching film about the dark past of the US. Christian Bale (The Pale Blue Eye) is an officer responsible for killing hundreds of indigenous people in the wild west, but now the US government has decided it is time for the ‘wild’ to disappear and civilization calls for diplomacy, not genocide. Therefore, as an apology to the brutality committed for so many years, the officials task the protagonist with one last mission, to deliver […] to his ancestral lands, so he may spend the rest of his days with his family. Disgusted by the idea, at first, the protagonist refuses, but caves in reluctantly. In the long journey that follows, the protagonist slowly learns to let go of his hatred and starts admiring a culture that he was so eager to annihilate. However, there are many attacks and ambushes on the way, and slowly but surely, men start dying, some killed by different Indian tribes at war with each other, others killed by their own feelings of regret and remorse after a lifetime of exterminating Indians.  The ending was brilliant. The cast includes Rosamund Pike, Jonathan Majors, Wes Studi and even Timothée Chalamet (Dune) plays a minor role here. 

In The Adderall Diaries (2015), directed by Pamela Romanowsky, James Franco (The Interview) is a writer that shocks his audience with his autobiographical books about drug addiction. Suddenly his entire career is at risk when his father, Ed Harris, tells everyone that the books are mostly lies. Father and son have different memories of the past. When the protagonist was a teenager, wonderfully played by Timothée Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name), he was a drug addict, but it is true that he doesn’t remember everything, he doesn’t know the whole story. With some investigative journalism the truth will come up, but will it be too late for the son to reconcile with his father? Interesting premise, and overall solid execution, although not especially memorable.  

Jessie Nelson’s Love the Coopers (2015) is a fun intergenerational Christmas movie that brings together quite an impressive cast: Steve Martin and Diane Keaton are organizing a Christmas dinner for the whole family, but a time of the year that should be about the joy of sharing is, for many, a moment of frustration, or simply disillusion in the midst of unemployment. And yet, hope can still prevail. The cast includes John Goodman, Amanda Seyfried, Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine), Marisa Tomei and Timothée Chalamet (Bones and All), who is a teenager excited about his first kiss with the girl of his dreams. 

In one of his first films, Taika Waititi writes and directs Boy (2010), a deeply touching and personal story about an 11-year-old kid, James Rolleston, who is incredibly happy to see his father again after years of absence; however, what he doesn’t know or doesn’t want to admit is that his father is clumsy criminal, drug addict and alcoholic, whose only reason to return is to find a bag of money he buried in the garden. Boy combines the joy and innocence of childhood with a vivid imagination and moments full of humor and absurdity, which seem to increase the more we delve into the dilapidated and humble small New Zealand town in which the story unfolds.

Después de un mes de viaje por Europa, decidí visitar Milwaukee por una semana. Y por supuesto tuve tiempo de admirar la actuación de uno de mis actores favoritos de los últimos años. Empecemos con Little Women (2019), dirigida por Greta Gerwig (Barbie) y basada en la novela homónima de Louisa May Alcott; vemos la vida de 4 hermanas que se adoran y que a pesar de sus muchos talentos parecen no tener otras opciones en la vida excepto casarse. A Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird) le encanta escribir y tiene mucho talento, pero no soporta las críticas de su amigo Louis Garrel (Saint Laurent); Emma Watson (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) está interesada en convertirse en actriz pero debe olvidar sus sueños y encontrar un marido, Eliza Scanlen intenta luchar contra sus enfermedades mientras Florence Pugh (Midsommar) pasa tiempo con su tía rica, Meryl Streep (Let Them All Talk), quien le explica la importancia de casarse con un hombre acaudalado, como Timothée Chalamet (The King), heredero de un millonario local. Actuaciones de primer nivel, momentos dramáticos y un enfoque respetuoso pero innovador del material original la convierten en una de las mejores adaptaciones literarias de los últimos años.

 Normalmente disfruto de las películas experimentales, pero One & Two (2015) quizás fue demasiado para mí. Timothée Chalamet (Beautiful Boy) y Kiernan Shipka son hermano y hermana, viven bajo las estrictas reglas de sus padres, fanáticos religiosos que los mantienen aislados. Los dos adolescentes tienen un superpoder asombroso: la teletransportación. Podrían ir a donde quisieran, pero no saben que el mundo es más grande que el patio frente a la casa. Supongo que el director, Andrew Droz Palermo, tenía muchas ideas sobre la religión y la muerte que quería explorar, pero de alguna manera nada de eso se desarrolla aquí. Al menos lo que nos queda claro es que el amor entre hermanos puede superar todos los obstáculos.

Hostiles (2017), de Scott Cooper, es una conmovedora película sobre el oscuro pasado de Estados Unidos. Christian Bale (The Pale Blue Eye) es un militar responsable de matar a cientos de indígenas en el lejano oeste, pero ahora el gobierno de Estados Unidos ha decidido que es hora de que desaparezca lo "salvaje" y la civilización pide diplomacia, no genocidio. Por eso, como disculpa a la brutalidad cometida durante tantos años, los funcionarios le encomiendan una última misión al protagonista, devolver a Wes Studi a sus tierras ancestrales, para que pase el resto de sus días con su familia. Disgustado por la idea, al principio, el protagonista se niega, pero cede de mala gana. En el largo viaje que sigue, el protagonista aprende lentamente a dejar de lado su odio y comienza a admirar una cultura que estaba tan ansioso por aniquilar. Sin embargo, hay muchos ataques y emboscadas en el camino, y lenta pero seguramente, los hombres comienzan a morir, algunos asesinados por diferentes tribus indígenas en guerra entre sí, otros asesinados por sus propios sentimientos de arrepentimiento y remordimiento después de toda una vida exterminando a los indígenas. El final fue brillante. El elenco incluye a Rosamund Pike, Jonathan Majors, e incluso Timothée Chalamet (Dune) tiene un papel menor aquí.
