Diablo House - Ted Adams & Santipérez

When I was around 12, I would often sneak into my school’s library during break. I guess I wasn’t too interested in playing soccer or in any of the other activities that were to be expected from students at the time. But I didn’t really read novels when I was at the library, nor did I play chess like a couple of my friends used to do. Every time I was there I would take a loot at the comic book collection that was available at the library. Because of the wisdom and audacity of the founder and principal of the school, there were no such things as age restrictions for us, so I could just as easily put my hands on an Asterix graphic novel or on Creepy issues from the 70s.

Evidently, I’ve always been an avid comic book reader, and those classic horror comics published by Warren in the United States (and by Toutain in Spain) were so different to the many Tintin or Asterix issues I had been reading up to that point, and not only because of the violence or the elements of sexuality, I’d dare say there was a unique visual language in those comics, and both writers and artists were ready to push the boundaries of the medium.

In the 90s, Toutain included some amazing works by Santipérez in Creepy and Comix Internacional, with such extraordinary miniseries like Valle Paraíso, the Spanish artist quickly became one of my favorite horror creators. I have been waiting for years, decades even, for the next Santipérez project, and when I saw Diablo House in IDW solicitations, I was ecstatic. Diablo House is a 4-issue miniseries that reminds me why I used to enjoy so much those classic Creepy comics, and it was most certainly worth the wait.
architecture inspired by Gaudí / arquitectura inspirada por Gaudí
Although Ted Adams seems to be famous only because of his position as IDW’s CEO, he’s also a writer in his own right and a true connoisseur of the 9th art. According to Adams’ statement in interview for CBR, “I was in Barcelona last year for the Barcelona Comics Festival, and was doing portfolio reviews […] I met an artist named Santipérez. It’s very rare that this happens. But I loved his art so much that I actually tried to buy some of his original art when he was showing it to me, which he wouldn’t sell me. But I hired him basically on the spot to do some work for us”.
silent suicide / suicidio silencioso
I’m not surprised at all by Adams’ story, and I’m sure that if I would have been able to hold Santipérez originals in my hand, I would have tried to buy them right there, hell, I might even have sold my soul to obtain that magnificent art. And selling your soul to the devil is precisely what’s behind the basic narrative structure of this miniseries: “The premise is that there’s a house in La Jolla, California, called Diablo House, which is modeled after Antoni Gaudí’s work in Barcelona. Basically, in this house, there’s a host, just like there would be in classic horror comics, and people can go in and essentially sell their soul to their devil. Every issue’s going to be a throwback to those twisted tales from the ’70s. Every issue is going to be a standalone story”, explains Adams. I love standalone issues, I love Gaudi, I love classic horror; and, what a coincidence, two years ago, before moving to Wisconsin, I reviewed Santipérez’s Valle Paraíso, and now, a few days after relocating to California, I get the chance to enjoy a story that takes place in the Golden State.
inside Diablo House / dentro de Diablo House
Published from July to December 2017, Diablo House gives Santipérez the opportunity to impress the readers with his amazing artistic skill. In the pages of Diablo House we can find the ominous and impressive architectural texture of the Gaudí-inspired house, but also the insanely beautiful and fascinating inner structure of the house (in a double page spread, Santipérez plays with perspective, dimensions and composition, but he also adds an infinitude of details that invites us to imagine what could be hidden behind each door); the silent page, especially the suicide panel, presented as a photograph, reminds me so much of Valle Paraíso that I could not stop staring at it; as usual, Santipérez’s portrayal of youth is fascinating, as we can see in in the scene in which two friends talk about how to hook up with girls, and of course, there is also plenty of sensuality and eroticism, but also incredibly crazy and original designs, like Riley’s car or the table in the last page.

Just one panel of Santipérez is enough to produce in all of us unprecedented levels of visual delight, and even in the hypothetical scenario that he would have only illustrated a single page in 2017, he would still deserve the Arion’s Achievement Award for Best Artist. I highly recommend Diablo House to all comic book readers and, most especially, to fans of the horror genre. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

things you need to know to pick up girls / cosas que necesitas saber para ligar con las chicas

fantasy and horror / fantasía y horror

Wisconsin Days, California Days

2 years. Don’t they go away in the blink of an eye? It’s hard to believe that in September 2016 I was in Milwaukee, excited about my first semester at UWM. And now, September 2018, I’m no longer in Wisconsin. In fact I’m not even in the Midwest. I’m currently living in Davis, California, and everything is new again. It’s exciting times for, that’s for sure.

2 years ago I attended Chicago's Wizard World Comic Con, as you can see here:
http://artbyarion.blogspot.com/2016/08/2016-chicagos-wizard-world-comic-con.html

And I was recently checking up the dates for future Wizard World Comic Cons. And guess what? There’s one coming up in October. Sacramento is only half an hour away from Davis. Wouldn’t it be funny to attend another comic book convention now that I’m starting a new life in the West Coast? I’m seriously thinking about it...

http://artbyarion.blogspot.com/2016/08/2016-chicagos-wizard-world-comic-con.html

My first week in California has been great, and since school hasn't started yet, I had enough time to read August's comics. I'm excited to see classics like Halo Jones recolered, or to see such seminal stories like Kraven's Last Hunt in a deluxe edition. Thor, Hit-Girl, Cinema Purgatorio and Jeepers Creepers were also quite good. There were a lot of amazing comics this month, like the conclusion of the 6-issue arc of The Highest House, Marvel 2-In-One (just as good as Byrne's epic run on the FF) or the third issue of The Magic Order (which keeps getting better and better); however, my favorite comic of the month is American Gods # 5.

By the way, I already updated the post about July comics, which you can find here:

BALLAD OF HALO JONES 2
Justice League: Born Again - Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire

How difficult it was to write stories about Earth’s greatest heroes? Quite difficult, actually. Before the arrival of Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis, the Justice League of America was going through a rough patch. For many years, the League had become stagnant and meaningless, to the point that it wasn’t a surprise for anyone to see the title cancelled and most of their characters disbanded, forgotten or killed.

In 1986, after having learned their lesson, DC editors decided to take a risk and reboot the Justice League. This time, editor Andy Helfer was in charge of the process and he hired Keith Giffen, a great creator who exceled not only as a writer but also as an artist, but despite all of his amazing storytelling abilities, Giffen needed something else, something to inspire him and such inspiration was found in J.M. DeMatteis who, when first approached to do this project, was still a bit reluctant, “So there I was, rewriting Keith’s script. I didn’t know why I was doing it -I don’t even remember actually agreeing to do it- but there I was. And maybe, just maybe, it was fun”, admits DeMatteis in the foreword of the Justice League International Omnibus vol. 1.

Like Byrne and Claremont in Marvel Comics, Giffen and DeMatteis became DC’s best creative team, and challenged the preconception of superhero dynamics, because instead of following the ‘grim and gritty’ style followed by most people in the 80s, after the release of Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns, these two American creators embraced a more down to earth approach, and the result was, in the eyes of most readers “a monthly sitcom with capes and tights” but in reality it was so much more than that: “the Leaguers reminded me of the gang of friends I grew up with in Brooklyn, sitting around on Saturday nights, putting our feet up, dropping our defenses, ragging on each other, sharing our problems. Just being ourselves, without the pressure of the world intruding”. The members of the League were superheroes all readers were familiar with, but they were distant acquaintances at best, it was thanks to Giffen and DeMatteis that they became real people, and started to become friends, strange as it might sound since we’re talking about a relationship between real readers and fictional characters, but that sense of comradery, of identification, proved to be the strongest asset of this new Justice League.

“Born Again” (originally published in Justice League # 1, May 1987), introduces the new members of the League: the misogynistic Guy Gardner, the courageous Black Canary, the fearless Mister Miracle, the naïve Captain Marvel (who is constantly teased and mocked by Gardner), the brooding and melancholic Martian Manhunter, the lighthearted Blue Beetle, the inexperienced Doctor Light, the enigmatic Dr. Fate and the strict and imposing Batman (the only one in the League capable of intimidating Gardner). As a group, they’ve never worked together, and in the first meeting it’s evident that they’re not friends, and that there are more differences between them than things in common.
colleagues, but not friends / colegas pero no amigos
Martian Manhunter is the only one who has remained as a member of the Justice League throughout all of its incarnations, and in many ways he is the memory of the League, he is the one who instead of being seduced by the presence of the reporters and TV channels, exposes them for what they are: “they are wolves -- waiting to consume us. To them, we’re novelties… sideshow freaks -- viewed with amusement one moment, reviled the next”. The power of the media and the manipulation of those who are in a position of power will become a reiterative leitmotif in the pages of the Justice League.

The debut of the Justice League is marked by a confrontation against a group of terrorists who take hostages in the United Nations building, their claims about impoverished and oppressed countries are heard by Doctor Light, who agrees with them although not with their violent methods. This thematic element continues to be explored in “Make War No More” (Justice League # 2, June 1987), a story in which 3 superheroes from a parallel dimension have found their way to our reality, led by altruistic concerns and unencumbered by politics, they’ve decided to get rid of the world’s nuclear arsenal (after all, they’re the sole survivors of a nuclear Armageddon and that motivates them to save Earth from such dire destiny). Although it’s a noble proposal, their actions are interpreted as an act of war. In the end, in Meltdown (Justice League # 3, July 1987), the Justice League must fight against Wandjina, Silver Sorceress and Bluejay in Russian territories, to prevent the dismantling of a nuclear plant that could cause major conflicts between the US and the Soviet Union.
Batman & Guy Gardner
It’s interesting to notice that for Guy Gardner, it makes no sense to help the Russians, after all, he believes that Ronald Reagan is the only man with the right to “have his finger on the button” and that if this strange group of metahumans eliminates the nuclear arsenal of the Soviet Union, then “we’d have the world where we want it”. Once again, the notions of power and manipulation become evident, and although Gardner’s opinions are not mirrored by their colleagues, in the end none of them realize that they are being manipulated by wealthy businessman Maxwell Lord, the man who orchestrated the terrorist attack on the UN building and also the man who’ll become the League’s greatest benefactor.

All the interior pages and the covers are penciled by the extraordinary Kevin Maguire (who at the time was a newcomer) and inked by Terry Austin and Al Gordon. In fact, according to DeMatteis, the superb illustrations produced by Maguire persuaded him to join the creative team: “this Maguire guy, whoever he was, was pretty damn good […] so I knew it was going to be a great-looking book”. And it was, but at the same time it became a testimony of how human superheroes can be, and how deep our relationships can turn out to be with such fictional creatures.
________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________

Silver Sorceress, Wandjina & Bluejay

In Russia / en Rusia

As executive producer of such popular TV series like “Everwood”, “Jack & Bobby” and “Dawson’s Creek”, Greg Berlanti always found a way to introduce gay characters, although rarely as protagonists. But in the wonderful Love, Simon (2018), Berlanti wonders if coming out is still a taboo in today’s world. Nick Robinson (The Kings of Summer) seems to be an average teenager, living a very normal life, but he has a secret. He’s gay, but he doesn’t have the courage to come out of the closet, and when he finds himself immersed in an online infatuation with another closeted gay, questions of love, identity and acceptance arise; and he no longer understands what he wants or what he needs to do. Love, Simon is a deeply touching, heartfelt coming-of-age tale, in which the need for acceptance becomes an urgency; and it’s also a greater level of acceptance which is demanded here, because as a gay teenager the protagonist not only wants to be accepted by his parents, but also by his friends, by his school and by the society at large. And yet, prejudices still exist, and the fear to embrace his true self is what prevents the boy from finding, if not love, at least the possibility of love.

Peter Chelsom’s The Space Between Us (2017), is a romantic story in which love knows no boundaries. Due to an accident, Asa Butterfield (Ender’s Game) is the first boy born on Mars, and he develops an online crush on Britt Robertson, which motivates him to escape from his boring Martian life. After arriving to our planet, the teenager discovers Earth’s beauty and he finally understands what it means to be in love. The protagonist and the girl he loves, must escape the authorities, led by Gary Oldman (Paranoia) and Carla Gugino, in order to find the boy’s father. Chelsom is a wonderful director, capable of making us feel connected to the naivete and innocence of the protagonist, while inviting us to admire his intelligence and charisma. However, not all is joy and happiness, as the protagonist’s body starts to deteriorate quickly since his organism is not used to Earth’s atmosphere. The Space Between Us is both moving and deeply evocative, a must see.

In Arrival (2016), director Denis Villeneuve asks us, the viewers, to what extent language is the foundation of civilization. When several spacecrafts enter into Earth’s atmosphere, the world as we know it changes. Suddenly, finding a way to communicate with these alien life forms becomes urgent, and that’s when the army recruits linguist Amy Adams (Nocturnal Animals) and scientist Jeremy Renner (American Hustle). Villeneuve is able to convey a wide array of emotions, from the pain and sadness of a mother that has lost her child, to the suspense and sheer horror of a linguist about to enter into an extraterrestrial spacecraft, without forgetting to share with us that sense of awe we feel in the face of the unknown. In this remarkable film, we’re invited to reflect upon the true value of communication and how languages can shape the way we see the world. Villeneuve offers a realistic take on what might happen if an alien civilization would come in contact with our planet, and the consequences that such intrusion could cause. The protagonist must find a way to communicate with an intelligent species before the political tension and inner conflicts end up putting an end to our world. Max Richter’s extraordinary music creates the right atmosphere for this intense, beautiful and unforgettable film. Villeneuve’s cinematic masterpiece is, undoubtedly, the best film of 2016. I highly recommend it.

Nick Robinson

The Space Between Us es enternecedora y profundamente evocadora; merece nuestra atención.
