February Comics / Cómics de febrero

In the shortest month of the year I had the chance to read a lot of amazing comics! I got 2 classics X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills and Dave Gibbons’ The Originals. Millar is doing a good job with Prodigy, Magic Order and Sharkey. Jason Aaron favorably surprised me with Conan the Barbarian and Thor. Crypt of Shadows and Journey Into Unknown Worlds were fun. Empezando con 2 clásicos X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills y The Originals de Dave Gibbons. Jason Aaron me sorprendió favorablemente con Conan the Barbarian y Thor. Crypt of Shadows y Journey Into Unknown Worlds fueron divertidos.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #3

CRYPT OF SHADOWS #1

DIE #3
Desgarradora fantasía. Una historia tristísima con arte bellísimo.

JOURNEY TO UNKNOWN WORLDS #1

Blogging away

It’s been a while since I shared information about the blog with you guys, and now that I’m at the airport in Milwaukee waiting for my flight to Sacramento, I decided to talk a little bit about what goes into the decision process of what to write about when it comes to this particular blog, which as long time readers know, focuses mostly on comics but also on film.

First of all, for whatever reason, seems like some of my posts are incredibly popular compared to others, as I can see in Blogger’s data. First place, with almost a quarter of a million hits, goes to Severed #1, which was an amazing comic and due to the success of this post in 2011, I started reviewing many of Image’s new miniseries. Second place goes to Think Tank #1, with 230,000 hits, again another Image / Top Cow new series from 2012. Third place goes to the last issue of Severed, which once again proves how successful the series was and how many readers were interested in finding reviews about it. The fourth place is a short post about my comics (I heavily promoted this one back in 2011, so that’s how I explain the big numbers). The fifth place is a post about the comics I buy on a monthly basis, it’s very rare that this kind of posts could gain so much traction, but for some reason, that’s what happened with this one. The sixth place is Aetheric Mechanics, probably one of the first Avatar Press series that I reviewed, which encouraged me to talk more about other Avatar titles. The seventh place is The Theater #1, a new series published by Zenescope in 2011. The eighth place is The Legion, I’m a huge fan of the Legion of Super-Heroes, and with over 40,000 hits I realized in 2014 that it was a good idea to post more about the young heroes of the 31st century. And at last but not least, we have Days of Scandals Past, in reference to Days of Future Past, the classic Claremont/Byrne X-Men saga which, in 2014, turned into a movie directed by Bryan Singer. It took me almost a week of research to write that post, which became the most controversial post ever published on this blog, now that Singer is again in the middle of a sexual scandal, you might just as well (re)read it:

Spider-Man: Kraven’s Last Hunt - J.M. DeMatteis & Mike Zeck

Heroes and villains have a strange relationship. In order to define themselves, they must find their opposite: light and darkness, day and night, fire and ice and so on. However, they also need each other because no hero is complete without villains and no villain would be satisfied without a hero to attack. In simple terms, a protagonist alone would be boring, we need an antagonist.

When Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created Spider-Man back in the 60s they also introduced some of the most classic adversaries of the arachnid superhero. One of them was Kraven, the Hunter, a mysterious man from Russia who had turned hunting into his life passion. Challenged to hunt Spider-Man, Kraven knows defeat for the first time, and throughout the years, he would reappear only to be defeated again.

However, in the brilliant saga Kraven’s Last Hunt, J.M. DeMatteis decided to delve deep into the personality of the Hunter. What was his history? What turned him into a man obsessed with hunting? And above all, how could he finally find the way to defeat Spider-Man? This 6-issue arc is a dark and nightmarish tale, with an unprecedented level of maturity that certainly took the entire comic book industry by surprise back in 1987 (and very different in tone to DeMatteis’ critically acclaimed run on Justice League). There is a reason why it’s considered one of the best Spider-Man stories ever written, and even 30 years after its publication it remains just as shocking and impressive.

In addition to DeMatteis’ fascinating script, artist Mike Zeck surprises us with beautiful art and a careful panel distribution that takes into account symmetry with a unique sense of design and elegance. Page after page, the art complements and enhances the words of the writer, creating an amazing and cohesive visual narrative that completely captures the reader’s attention.
Kraven
In the opening scene of “The Coffin” (originally published in Web of Spider-Man # 31, October 1987), we see Kraven embracing the wild side of his nature. He has finally made a decision, one that will have tragic consequences. In order to kill the spider, he’ll become the spider. In a magnificent sequence masterfully penciled by Mike Zeck and wonderfully inked by Bob McLeod, we see Kraven violently devouring spiders, at the same time, Peter Parker wakes up from a nightmare, and understands that his life is at risk.
Peter Parker

Not too long after this ominous moment, Kraven will put aside his classic gadgets, and with a simple hunting rifle he shoots Spider-Man, takes his body and buries him. But that’s not the end of Kraven’s plan, it’s merely the beginning. He dons the mantle of the spider, he effectively becomes Spider-Man. His goal is to prove he can be a more powerful, a more efficient Spider-Man than the original one. And it is under this false identity that Kraven will fight against Vermin in “Crawling” (Amazing Spider-Man # 293, October 1987) and “Descent” (Spectacular Spider-Man # 131, October 1987).
Becoming the spider / convirtiéndose en la araña
DeMatteis perfectly captures the anxiety and fear experienced by Mary Jane, who keeps waiting for Peter Parker to show up and after so many days she finally tries to find him by contacting Peter’s friends. There is quite an interesting dilemma going on, since she doesn’t want to let people know that Peter is Spider-Man but at the same time there is no other way to find clues about what happened if she keeps the secret.

In “Resurrection” (Web of Spider-Man # 32, November 1987), “Spider-Man finally awakens from his drug-induced coma and busts out of his coffin”. Once again, Mike Zeck proves why he was one of the most talented artists in the 80s, by providing a couple of pages in which Peter Parker finds himself floating in an empty space; the splash page of Spider-Man punching his way out of the tomb is a very powerful image.
The nightmare has just begun / la pesadilla recién ha comenzado

The final confrontation between Kraven and Spider-Man takes place in the pages of “Thunder” (Amazing Spider-Man # 294, November 1987). But this isn’t the usual fight between a superhero and a supervillain. Kraven bares his soul at the same time that he removes his spider costume and, for the last time, wears the animal skins that forged his reputation as a hunter. Kraven literally saves Spider-Man’s life when he is unable to subdue Vermin. The hero doesn’t understand the actions of a man who had been his sworn enemy for such a long time. And Kraven announces “After all these years, you surely know that I’m a man of my word-- and I give you my word: from this night forward, Kraven the Hunter-- will never hunt again”. Spider-Man’s instincts tell him that Kraven is telling the truth, but without understanding the real meaning of that promise he immediately goes down the sewers to track down Vermin, promising Kraven that he’ll be back. But he won’t. At least not in time. “Once Kraven is alone, he completes his final hunt in horrendous fashion”. There is nothing left in Kraven’s life, and thus suicide seems to be the only possible alternative. That’s why “At the time of its publication, this issue generated considerable controversy due to Kraven’s violent death by his own hands”.

The final chapter, “Ascending” (Spectacular Spider-Man # 132, November 1987) brings about the bittersweet conclusion. Spider-Man is able to reestablish himself as the savior of New York, but at the same time, he suspects he won’t ever see Kraven again. He doesn’t know it yet, but the hunter has killed himself, thus honoring his word: he will never hunt again. And if heroes need villains to define themselves, what happens once the villain commits suicide?

________________________________________________________________________________________________

Can Peter Parker come back from limbo?

Kraven & Spider-Man

Lady Bird (2017) is an extraordinary film written and directed by Greta Gerwig. Saoirse Ronan (How I Live Now) gives out an outstanding performance, fierce and strong, just like her character. This fascinating tale analyzes the complexities and difficulties of adolescence, the constant tension between a rebellious daughter and a frustrated mother, Laurie Metcalf, who doesn’t know how to help her daughter or how to communicate with her. In her last year of high school, the protagonist must redefine herself, apply to colleges and try to find love, all while exploring the invisible lines that separate her from her wealthy classmates. She’ll be hurt, she’ll be disappointed, but she’ll have the most intense year of her life. Gerwig’s deeply personal portrayal of confused and problematic youth brings up fabulous characters, like Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea) who must come to terms with his homosexuality and the impossibility to come out to his family (the scene in which he bursts into tears and hugs Saoirse is heartbreaking), and also defiant teenagers like Timothée Chalamet (famous for his role as a gay boy in Call Me By Your Name). When Saoirse says she hates California, I immediately felt identified with her; she is deeply disappointed when she gets accepted into UC Davis, a university famous for being a farm (and since I live now here in Davis, I couldn’t stop laughing with that line). The film is an authentic emotional journey from beginning to end, and has such beautiful and amazing moments that it’s impossible not to remember, sometimes painfully, sometimes joyfully, how it was for us to grow up in a world that seemed to care very little for our biggest hopes and dreams.

Elijah Bynum writes and directs Hot Summer Nights (2017). Timothée Chalamet (Beautiful Boy) is a lonely teenager that spends the summer at his aunt’s house, in Cape Cod, there he meets Alex Roe (The 5th Wave), the town’s bad boy, and falls in love with his new friend’s sister, Maika Monroe. The film dissects what seems to be the perfect life in an upper-class summer destination; however, behind all that there is a massive network of young people taking all sorts of drugs, marijuana chief among them. It is in this context that the protagonist and his friend and partner try to do their best to become the only providers of weed. The film can work as a metaphor of fast-paced youth and also the difficulty of finding oneself at a critical age. Based on real life events, this is a moving a captivating coming-of-age tale.

Saoirse Ronan

Elijah Bynum escribe y dirige Hot Summer Nights (2017).
