On July 6, I flew from California to Spain. I spent 5 wonderful and incredibly fun weeks in Spain, Italy and Germany. So of course when I returned to California I had a lot of comics to read. So let’s start with new titles like Batman Reptilian, a fantastic new miniseries by Garth Ennis and Liam Sharp; then Amazing Fantasy #1, a very interesting first issue; The United States of Captain America, however, were a bit disappointing (not even the introduction of a new gay Captain America was enough to capture my attention). The Blue Flame, The Marvels and Legends of the Dark Knight continue to be good. The conclusion of the first Eternals arc was great! And for the second time in a row, and against all odds, the best two comics of the month come from DC, The Nice House on the Lake and Strange Adventures. In a solid second place I’d have Marvel Voices: Pride, a fun and endearing anthology about LGBT characters in the Marvel Universe. And now, without further ado, here are July comics as per solicitations:

AMAZING FANTASY #1

BATMAN REPTILIAN #1

(W) Christopher Cantwell (A/CA) Adam Gorham. It's been seven months since the incident, and Sam Brausam is alive… if you can call it that. He's barely learned to walk again, his spirit seems broken beyond repair, and the booze and pain pills aren't doing his recovery any favors. El 6 de julio volé de California a España. Pasé 5 semanas maravillosas e increíblemente divertidas en España, Italia y Alemania. Common Grounds # 3 - Hickman, Bachalo & Jurgens

Whenever I go to Bizarro World, the comic book store here in Davis, I dive into the boxes full of back issues and I have unearthed some amazing treasures. In the past year or so, nothing has been better than Common Grounds, an amazing miniseries that I didn’t even know existed... Writer Troy Hickman created a unique concept that allowed him to tell multiple, standalone stories in a single issue, while working with some of the best artists in the industry.

In “Sanctuary” (March 2004) a girl and a man meet for coffee after facing some street thugs. In their conversation we see the classic question: are superpowers a curse or a blessing? Sure, this is a question that has been asked by many superheroes but what’s really interesting here is the way in which such philosophical issue can become a very down-to-earth dialogue. This story is illustrated by Chris Bachalo, a fantastic artist who always delivers highly dynamic and lively pages. Bachalo also excels at conveying emotions, which is fundamental for the script.

The second story “Heir of Truth” is a remake of sorts, the original story was also written by Troy Hickman and illustrated by Jerry Smith, one of his colleagues. Printed in black and white and with (one might assume) a limited print run, “Heir of Truth” is one of those cases in which the story stays in the mind of the writer, and continues to evolve until it returns in a more refined version. Here, Strangeness and Charm, two superhero siblings, remember their father. Since Marvel and DC heroes aren’t too keen on reproduction, the question of different generations of heroes and the interaction between them has rarely been explored in mainstream titles. Of course, authors like Alan Moore and Kurt Busiek have written stories in which the family connections are essential. And I must say I really like Hickman’s approach, as it is concise but also moving. The siblings wonder about the true nature of their deceased father, was he a supervillain with a noble heart? Was he a good man prompted to do the wrong things at the wrong time?

“Heir of Truth” is illustrated by Dan Jurgens, who once again proves how talented he is when it comes to super-heroic action sequences and characters design. As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve always liked Dan Jurgens’ art when he was a regular collaborator for the Superman comics, and here he continues to be just as good as he was during his run on the Man of Steel. The striking cover, which reunites all the protagonist superheroes, is by the fantastic Rodolfo Migliari.

Cada vez que voy a Bizarro World, la tienda de cómics aquí en Davis, me sumerjo en las cajas llenas de cómics y he desenterrado algunos tesoros increíbles. En el último año, nada ha sido mejor que Common Grounds, una miniserie increíble que ni siquiera sabía que existía... El escritor Troy Hickman creó un concepto único que le permitió contar múltiples historias independientes en un sólo número, mientras trabajaba con algunos de los mejores artistas de la industria.

En “Santuario” (marzo del 2004) una muchacha y un hombre se encuentran para tomar un café después de enfrentarse a unos matones callejeros. En su conversación vemos la pregunta clásica: ¿los superpoderes son una maldición o una bendición? Claro, esta es una pregunta que se han hecho muchos superhéroes, pero lo que es realmente interesante aquí es la forma en que este tema filosófico puede convertirse en un diálogo muy realista. Esta historia está ilustrada por Chris Bachalo, un artista fantástico que siempre ofrece páginas muy dinámicas y animadas. Bachalo también sobresale en transmitir emociones, lo cual es fundamental para el guión.

Dan Jurgens

La segunda historia “Heredero de la verdad” es una especie de remake, la historia original también fue escrita por Troy Hickman e ilustrada por Jerry Smith, uno de sus colegas. Impreso en blanco y negro y con (asumo yo) un tiraje limitadísimo, "Heredero de la verdad" es uno de esos casos en los que la historia permanece en la mente del escritor y continúa evolucionando hasta que regresa de una manera más refinada. Aquí, Strangeness y Charm, dos hermanos superhéroes, recuerdan a su padre. Dado que los héroes de Marvel y DC no están muy interesados en la reproducción, la cuestión de las diferentes generaciones de héroes y la interacción entre ellos rara vez se ha explorado en los títulos convencionales. Por supuesto, autores como Alan Moore y Kurt Busiek han escrito historias en las que las conexiones familiares son fundamentales. Y debo decir que me gusta mucho el enfoque de Hickman, ya que es conciso pero también conmovedor. Los hermanos se preguntan sobre la verdadera naturaleza de su padre fallecido, ¿era un supervillano con un corazón noble? ¿Fue un buen hombre impulsado a hacer las cosas incorrectas en el momento equivocado?

Dan Jurgens

“Heredero de la verdad” está ilustrado por Dan Jurgens, quien demuestra una vez más lo talentoso que es cuando se trata de secuencias de acción superheroicas y diseño de personajes. Como mencioné antes, siempre me gustó el arte de Dan Jurgens cuando era un colaborador habitual de los cómics de Superman, y aquí sigue siendo tan bueno como lo fue durante su etapa en el Hombre de Acero. La llamativa portada, que reúne a todos los superhéroes protagonistas, es del fantástico Rodolfo Migliari.

Marvel # 3 - Busiek, Ross, Sienkiewicz, Weiss et al

As you might have noticed from the previous issues, the fantastic Alex Ross covers don’t necessarily correspond with the stories inside each issue, so for this issue, for instance, we have an extraordinary composition in which much of its power derives from the darkness of the illustration. In contrast with the shadows that surround them, we see Luke Cage and Iron Fist, urban heroes per excellence. Of course, Alex Ross also provides the magnificent opening page, as well as the last one, in which we can see how Nightmare has become as powerful as Galactus and the Celestials.

The first story is “A Clash at the Deepest Depths” (February 2021) with script, pencils and inks by Alan Weiss. This is supposed to be a homage to classic stories from the 40s, so this Namor the Submariner is a character that hasn’t interacted with any Marvel heroes yet. I think Weiss does a pretty good job imitating the style of 40s comics, but this wasn’t really my cup of tea. There is also a very amusing double page story, “Unwanted Attention” by Scott Gustafson, starred by Rocket Raccoon.

My favorite story in this issue is, by far, Bill Sienkiewicz’s “Beginnings”. Here Uatu, the Watcher, acts not only as the cosmic entity that has vowed to observe and never interfere but also as a standup comedian with the very unique and insightful comments and jokes to share. Uatu is a aware of his godlike characteristics and his unending wisdom, he has observed the galaxy for countless eons and now he has a question that we can all find fascinating: “What drives humans to create?”.

Here Sienkiewicz concentrates on artistic creation and comic books. There is a fascinating metafictional and metaphorical game, as we get to see the Watcher, watching a kid that will grow up to be a comic book artist, id est, Sienkiewicz himself. The connection between author and creation complement the characters of the Marvel universe as well as the creations we all admire so much. Sienkiewicz uses a rather experimental artistic style that fits in perfectly with the original and quite unusual nature of “Beginnings”.

Finally, “Honeymoon in Hell” by Ayan Heshka is also a peculiar tale about the Red Skull, Captain America’s archnemesis. This one is a reinterpretation of 40s and 50s aesthetics and a wildly unexpected incursion into the past of some unknown Marvel characters. I think this proposal was quite promising but overall it falls short of the reader’s expectations.

Como habréis notado en los números anteriores, las fantásticas portadas de Alex Ross no se corresponden necesariamente con las historias dentro de cada número, por ello para este ejemplar, por ejemplo, tenemos una composición extraordinaria en la que gran parte de su potencia proviene de la oscuridad de la ilustración. En contraste con las sombras que los rodean, vemos a Luke Cage y Iron Fist, héroes urbanos por excelencia. Por supuesto, Alex Ross también proporciona la magnífica página inicial, así como la última, en la que podemos ver cómo Nightmare se ha vuelto tan poderoso como Galactus y los Celestiales.

Scott Gustafson

La primera historia es "Un choque en las profundidades más profundas" (febrero del 2021) con guión, lápices y tintas de Alan Weiss. Se supone que es un homenaje a las historias clásicas de los 40s, así que Namor the Submariner es un personaje que aún no ha interactuado con ningún héroe de Marvel. Creo que Weiss hace un buen trabajo imitando el estilo de los cómics de los 40s, pero esto es algo poco memorable. También hay una historia de doble página muy divertida, "Atención no deseada" de Scott Gustafson, protagonizada por Rocket Raccoon.

Ayan Heshka

Mi historia favorita en este número es, de lejos, "Comienzos" de Bill Sienkiewicz. Aquí Uatu, el Observador, actúa no solo como la entidad cósmica que se ha comprometido a observar y nunca interferir, sino también como un comediante con comentarios y bromas muy únicos y perspicaces para compartir con todos. Uatu es consciente de sus características divinas y su sabiduría sin fin, ha observado la galaxia durante incontables eones y ahora tiene una pregunta que todos podemos encontrar fascinante: "¿Qué impulsa a los humanos a crear?".

Alex Ross

Aquí Sienkiewicz se concentra en la creación artística y los cómics. Hay un fascinante juego metaficcional y metafórico, en el que vemos al Observador, observando a un niño que se convertirá en un dibujante de cómics, id est, el propio Sienkiewicz. La conexión entre autor y creación complementa los personajes del universo Marvel así como las creaciones que todos admiramos tanto. Sienkiewicz utiliza un estilo artístico bastante experimental que encaja perfectamente con la naturaleza original y bastante inusual de “Beginnings”.

 

Finalmente, "Luna de miel en el infierno" de Ayan Heshka también es una historia peculiar sobre Red Skull, el archienemigo del Capitán América. Esta es una reinterpretación de la estética de los 40s y 50s y una incursión tremendamente inesperada en el pasado de algunos personajes desconocidos de Marvel. Creo que esta propuesta fue bastante prometedora, pero en general no cumple con las expectativas del lector.

July was such an amazing month, I was very busy during my trip to Europe but before leaving the US I managed to watch The Woman in the Window (2021), directed by Joe Wright (and based on the novel by A.J. Finn). Amy Adams (Nocturnal Animals) is a psychologist who’s had a mental breakdown and suffers from agoraphobia, an irrational fear of going outside her apartment; she lives a reclusive life, and constantly combines pills with alcohol, creating a very dangerous cocktail for her mental wellbeing. It is in this scenario in which she meets her new neighbors, as they all stop by at different times to say hi. First, Fred Hechinger a 17-year-old boy who awakens her motherly instinct and her need to protect children from abuse, then the mother of the boy, a magnificent Julianne Moore (Still Alice) who complains about her husband and quickly becomes a friend, and finally the father, Gary Oldman (The Space Between Us), whose cruelty and aggressiveness seem to be his defining features. When the protagonist witnesses from her window the murder of Julianne Moore she immediately contacts the police, but when the family shows up with a different woman that affirms to be the wife, then nobody believes in Amy Adams, whose mental state is deteriorating due to her medications. The Woman in the Window is a captivating psychological thriller, full of suspense and great acting, perhaps some of the plot twists might seem predictable to some viewers, but that doesn’t diminish my enjoyment in the least. 

Florian Zeller’s The Father (2020) is one of the most intense and dramatic films I’ve seen in this decade.  Anthony Hopkins (The Dresser) gives an outstanding performance as a man who is slowly losing his memories and cognitive capacities, to the point that sometimes he forgets his own daughter Olivia Colman, or his caretaker Imogen Poots (Vivarium). Navigating in a dark sea of confusing memories and incapable of distinguishing past events from present ones, the protagonist deterioration contrasts with his strong will and determination. Anthony Hopkins has always been a remarkable actor, but this might be one of the best roles of his career, everything from his loving relationship with his daughter, to his constant forgetfulness and his doubts are extraordinarily conveyed, with only a few gestures or a subtle modulation of the voice, everything becomes so real to us, the viewers, that we simply cannot take our eyes off the screen. It’s amazing to see how the protagonist has a series of strategies he uses to hide the fact he’s losing his memory, and due to his ingenuity and resilience it’s impossible for us not to feel identified with him. At the same time, the conflict also unfolds from the point of view of the daughter and her husband, who wants to get rid of this old man. The ending is as heartbreaking as one might expect in a dramatic film like this one, I must say this is definitely one of the best productions of 2020 and I highly recommend it. 

Directed by Marshall Curry, The Neighbors’ Window (2019) is a very interesting short film in which we get to see how passion wanes between a married couple, Maria Dizzia and Greg Keller, when they start spying their neighbors very active sexual life through the window, they realize how dull their life is, and how difficult it is to find intimacy after having 3 children. The end, unexpected and bittersweet, really rounds it up.

Doug Roland writes and directs Feeling Through (2020), a story about Steven Prescod, a boy from an underprivileged background and Robert Tarango, a homeless blind guy. Can friendship be possible between them? And are survival instincts stronger than altruistic feelings? This short film has good moments, but the end felt somewhat too optimistic or even naïve given the context.

Amy Adams (Nocturnal Animals) es una psicóloga que ha tenido un colapso mental y sufre de agorafobia, un miedo irracional a salir de su apartamento; vive una vida solitaria y constantemente combina pastillas con alcohol, creando un cóctel muy peligroso para su bienestar mental. Es en este escenario en el que conoce a sus nuevos vecinos, quienes en diferentes momentos van a saludarla. Primero, Fred Hechinger, un chaval de 17 años que despierta su instinto maternal y su necesidad de proteger a los niños del abuso, luego la madre del muchacho, una magnífica Julianne Moore (Still Alice) que se queja de su esposo y rápidamente se convierte en una amiga, y finalmente el padre, Gary Oldman (The Space Between Us), cuya crueldad y agresividad parecen ser los rasgos que lo definen. Cuando la protagonista presencia desde su ventana el asesinato de Julianne Moore inmediatamente contacta a la policía, pero cuando la familia aparece con una mujer diferente que afirma ser la esposa, entonces nadie cree en Amy Adams, cuyo estado mental se está deteriorando debido a sus medicamentos. The Woman in the Window es un thriller psicológico cautivador, lleno de suspenso y grandes actuaciones, tal vez algunos de los giros de la trama puedan parecer predecibles para algunos espectadores, pero eso no disminuyó mi disfrute en lo más mínimo.

The Father (2020), de Florian Zeller, es una de las películas más intensas y dramáticas que he visto en esta década. Anthony Hopkins (The Dresser) ofrece una destacada actuación como un hombre que poco a poco va perdiendo su memoria y sus capacidades cognitivas, hasta el punto de que a veces se olvida de su propia hija Olivia Colman, o de su enfermera Imogen Poots (Vivarium). Navegando en un mar oscuro de recuerdos confusos e incapaz de distinguir los hechos pasados de los presentes, el deterioro del protagonista contrasta con su fuerte voluntad y determinación. Anthony Hopkins siempre ha sido un actor notable, pero este podría ser uno de los mejores papeles de su carrera, todo desde su relación amorosa con su hija, hasta su constante olvido y sus dudas se transmiten extraordinariamente, con solo unos pocos gestos o una sutil modulación de la voz, todo se vuelve tan real para nosotros, los espectadores, que simplemente no podemos apartar los ojos de la pantalla. Es asombroso ver cómo el protagonista tiene una serie de estrategias que usa para ocultar el hecho de que está perdiendo la memoria, y debido a su ingenio y resistencia es imposible que no nos sintamos identificados con él. Al mismo tiempo, el conflicto también se desarrolla desde el punto de vista de la hija y su esposo, que quiere deshacerse de este anciano. El final es tan desgarrador como uno podría esperar en una película dramática como esta, debo decir que esta es definitivamente una de las mejores producciones del 2020 y la recomiendo mucho.

Dirigida por Marshall Curry, The Neighbors’ Window (2019) es un cortometraje muy interesante en el que podemos ver cómo la pasión se desvanece en el matrimonio de Maria Dizzia y Greg Keller, cuando comienzan a espiar la vida sexual muy activa de sus vecinos a través de la ventana, se dan cuenta de lo aburrida que es su vida y de lo difícil que es encontrar intimidad después de tener 3 hijos. El final, inesperado y agridulce, realmente redondea el relato.
