For the first time in almost a century, there will be no new comic books released, Diamond, the US main comic book distributor has been temporarily shutdown amid the pandemic. Fortunately, DCBS was still able to send March’s comics as well as comics that were scheduled to come out the first week of April. So that means that next month’s post about April comics will probably be the last for a while. I was very satisfied with the first issue of Marvels Snapshots and I’ll try to write a review about it, Marvels X continues to be good, and Ennis continues to amaze me in Punisher Soviet. However, my favorite comic of the month doesn’t come from Marvel but rather from DC, and I’m talking about Strange Adventures # 1, Tom King has done it again, great story and great art by Mitch Gerads and Doc Shaner. And now, without further ado, here are March comics, as per solicitations:

8 years ago the first issue of Lot 13 came out from DC Comics. Originally planned to appear within the Wildstorm imprint, it ended up as part of regular DC offerings since Wildstorm had been eliminated from the publisher, much in the same way that a few years later Vertigo would disappear. At the time I reviewed the first issue, promising to do the same with the next ones, however I never got around it until now. So if you’ve been following this blog since 2012 then you’ll particularly enjoy this post.
We all know that Steve Niles loves the horror genre, and he has produced many horror-themed titles in the past. And Lot 13 had started as the quintessential haunted house story. However, in issue # 2 (originally published in January 2013) we are made privy to the terrible past surrounding the infamous lot 13, and the house built upon it. In a shocking scene, we see two drunk men taking turns and raping a woman. Although it is a violent scene, artist Glenn Fabry manages to depict the moment without making it more explicit than it needs to be. As readers we all understand what’s going on, and we also understand that the ghost of this woman will be forever trapped in the house now visited by the protagonists, along with the people executed during the Fairfax trials.
In issue # 2 (published in February 2013), we see the family desperately fighting to save their lives. Against an unending horde of mutilated and disfigured bodies, it looks as if all hope is lost. Fabry not only provides magnificent covers but also extraordinary and beautiful interior pages; his art shines in every sequence, and makes solid the ethereal concept of ghosts; furthermore, the amount of details, the careful design and the unique balance of every page turn this comic into the kind of work that deserves to be appreciated with our full attention.
A miniseries by such a famous creative team should have been successful but perhaps it didn’t reach its audience due to a series of reason. First of all, it’s a miniseries that would’ve fit well in Wildstorm but that seems slightly out of place under the DC Comics label. But the second reason, and perhaps the most important one, is that around the time the miniseries was published, a number of comic book writers openly complained about the use of rape and promised never to include such scenes in their works. This was one of the many situations in which the division between fiction and reality was forgotten. We can read or write a work of fiction about rape and that doesn’t mean that we condone rape.
However, the premise of some writers was that talking or even mentioning sexual abuse in the pages of a comic book would be an insult to victims of rape, however, this attempt of erasure feeds into the trauma, because in order to heal it’s necessary to remember and to accept what has happened, something which is extremely difficult to victims of sexual abuse who as a psychological defense mechanism deny what happened to them.

Todos sabemos que Steve Niles ama el género de terror, y ha producido muchos títulos de terror en el pasado. Lot 13 había comenzado como la típica historia de la casa encantada. Although in March we’ve spent most of the quarantine in front of the TV, we’ve seen mostly series (entire seasons) and only a handful of movies. I’ll start with Wes Anderson’s most recent production, an animated movie titled Isle of Dogs (2018), in which the mayor of a Japanese city decides to eradicate all dogs and send them to an island. In this context, a 12-year old boy decides to risk his life by going to the island, his only goal is to find his best friend, his dog Spots. After arriving to the island, the boy is helped by a very peculiar group of dogs, who have sworn to be always loyal to humans even if they have been exiled and treated like garbage. Anderson works here with many of his frequent collaborators who do the voices of the different dogs, so there are a lot of amazing actors involved in the project even if you don’t get to see any of them.
Richard Curtis writes and directs About Time (2013), a romantic comedy that reminds us of his previous works such as Love Actually. When Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina) turns 21, his father Bill Nighy (Wild Target) explains to him that he has a very special ability: he can travel back in time and change what happened in his own past. Surprised by the possibilities, the young man tries to use this new ability to hook up with the attractive Margot Robbie (Focus), but it doesn’t matter how many different timelines he creates, and how much effort he puts into it, she never pays attention to him. In time, he will meet Rachel McAdams (The Notebook) and fall in love with her. They are the perfect couple, and have a happy life, but when the protagonist decides to travel back in time again, he realizes that some changes in the past can have terrible consequences for his present. Curtis succeeds in creating charming characters, and above all, in making the audience feel identified with them.
After his opera prima, Shane Carruth directed Upstream Color (2013), a movie that starts with intensity, while creating a unique pace and atmosphere in which fear and horror can be present. When a man introduces a special variety of worms in the body of a woman, Amy Seimetz, and he manages to control her and hypnotize her, and in the process steals all her valuable possessions, her savings and even her house. However, the movie is more about what happens after such a traumatic experience, as the protagonist tries to recover her humanity and meets a man, Shane Carruth, who seems to have gone through a similar experience. Together, they’ll explore their traumas and uncover many other similar cases. Instead of relying on dialogs or special effects, the director’s proposal works mainly due to his careful editing, the selection of images and scenes, and the fantastic music, composed by Carruth himself.
Shane Carruth’s Primer (2004) is an example of how a filmmaker can be creative even without a big budget. Two friends, Shane Carruth and David Sullivan, are on the verge of a major scientific breakthrough: the world’s first time machine. What starts as a mere side project soon turns into a reality. However, once they’re able to travel in time, they realize the multiple complexities and ramifications of their invention. Famous for having a detailed oriented script, Primer has sparked the enthusiasm of many fans, who have come up with charts and elaborated graphics explaining exactly how time travel takes place in the film, and many recommend watching it at least a couple of times.

Aunque en marzo hemos pasado buena parte de la cuarentena en frente del televisor, hemos visto más que nada series (temporadas enteras) y sólo un puñado de películas. La producción más reciente de Wes Anderson es la película animada Isle of Dogs (2018), en la que el alcalde de una ciudad japonesa decide erradicar a todos los perros y enviarlos a una isla. En este contexto, un niño de 12 años decide arriesgar su vida yendo a la isla, su único objetivo es encontrar a su mejor amigo, su perro Spots. Después de llegar a la isla, el niño es ayudado por un grupo muy peculiar de perros, que han jurado ser siempre leales a los humanos, incluso si han sido exiliados y tratados como basura.
