Memorial Union - Madison

When I first started this blog, I didn't write about comics, I didn't write about movies. In fact, I barely wrote at all. Instead of plaguing the internet with my opinions about the 7th and 9th art, what I did at the beginning was more akin to (artistic) exhibitionism than anything else. Every week, I would share sketches and drawings with my 2 or 3 readers (at the time I was lucky if I had more than a dozen visits per day, I'm talking years before I crossed the 1 million mark).
my drawing from 2008 / mi dibujo del 2008

Although to a lesser degree I've tried to do the same in following years, including some of my random illustrations in certain posts and so on, since I left Peru in 2016 it has been quite difficult to actually sit down and draw.

Today, taking a look at old drawings, I found one of the oldest ones (which also happens to be one of my favorites). It may not seem like much but it helped me realize, at the time, how hard it was to draw a guy just sitting down and writing on his notebook (I remember I did this when I was in class, and I simply drew the guy that was sitting next to me). This was done in 2008, if I recall correctly, with 2B Pencil. It's hard to believe I did this 10 years ago.

And today, after meeting with a friend at the Memorial Union here in Madison, we both participated in free art event. All supplies were provided, and we both sat down at the terrace, next to the peaceful lake Mendota, and drew and painted for a couple of hours. I had a great time and I realized how much I missed holding a pencil in my hands. I've decided to share the result of those two hours, keep in mind, though, that I'm much better at penciling or even inking than I am at painting.

Buy my comic and get a Marvel comic for free!

Hi everyone!

Today, instead of reviewing someone else’s work, I’m focusing on my own comic book:
Un-American Chronicles, 4 stand-alone stories in one special issue: The Outsider (a horror story about a group of immoral kids that punish a defenseless woman with cruelty), It's Always the Statue of Liberty (an urban tale about 9/11; and about how, in fiction, a destroyed Statue of Liberty usually symbolizes the downfall of the US), Who Said It Was Easy? (a romantic comedy about a metamorphic woman who tries to seduce the guy next door) and Park (an erotic adventure in a public place…).

You can get the comic in the following link:
https://www.comixology.com/Un-American-Chronicles-1/digital-comic/95418

It’s only 1 dollar, and if you buy it you can win comics. That’s right, it’s sweepstakes time! I’ve decided to give away Marvel digital codes to the first 10 lucky readers. This is a magnificent opportunity to support independent comic books while taking a look at some well-known Marvel titles.

All codes are to be redeemed through Marvel’s official website:
https://marvel.com/redeem/

All you have to do to participate is buy Un-American Chronicles and rate it (from 1 to 5 stars). Once you’ve rated it on ComiXology’s website, you can send an email to atlantis2006@lycos.com with the words Un-American Chronicles Sweepstakes and that’s it. After that I’ll send the codes to the winners via email. I hope you like it!

Who Said It Was Easy?

https://www.comixology.com/Un-American-Chronicles-1/digital-comic/95418

https://marvel.com/redeem/

¡A leer!

Halo Jones vol. 1 - Alan Moore & Ian Gibson

We can all relate to the journey of the hero. The need to leave home behind and explore new, uncharted territories. But as much as we can relate to it, we’re also frightened of leaving behind the certainty of a world we know too well. It’s quite difficult, then, to make that sort of decision. And that is exactly the decision Halo Jones takes in the pages of 2000 AD.

I cannot overstate the importance of The Ballad of Halo Jones written by Alan Moore back in the mid-80s (originally published in 1984, in 2000 AD Progs # 376 - 385), this futuristic story begins in the Hoop a “slum where jobs are scarce and excitement is non-existent”. Overpopulation, financial crisis, unemployment… sure, the British author is talking about the distant future and yet, it almost seems like he’s talking about the present.

In this oppressive tomorrow, Halo Jones is an 18-year-old girl with no special talents or abilities, only the courage to speak her mind: “I'm sick of this place, every time something nice happens, a fight starts” affirms; she’s trapped in what seems to be a world devoid of hope and happiness. The conflict, the first of many, begins not too long after Halo and her friends go out to admire the Clara Pandy, a spaceship that has traveled all over the Galaxy just to come back to Earth to be disassembled.

That shiny spaceship is the only light that Halo can see. The only possibility to get out. But as Rodice, Halo’s best friend, explains “Even if you do get out it’s no good ‘cause no matter how far you get, they will fetch you back here and bust you to pieces. Just ask Clara Pandy”. Although all the odds are against her, Halo knows she must try to get out.
The Hoop
And why would she want to remain in the Hoop anyway? This is, after all, a society in conflict, overrun by crime, infested by alien refugees and mindless individuals called ‘Drummers’: people who voluntarily get an implant inside their heads so that they will lose their consciousness and they will become biological automatons, constantly dancing at the rhythm of a silent song, forever turned into a directionless herd.
Drummers & Clara Pandy

Ian Gibson’s magnificent art allows us to really see the futuristic universe created by Moore. The first double-page spread displays an impressive array of details that turn this city into a real place, with countless floating vehicles frenetically moving, and then Gibson zooms into the habitacle of Halo Jones, and then the last panel shows us how this girl dreams of getting out of that hell-hole. Gibson’s sleek design of the spaceship and the unique costumes created by the British artist are impressive, but above all well-grounded, with a strong and vibrant urban vibe.

Halo’s friends are Rodice and Ludy, a musician with enough talent to become a celebrity and get out of the Hoop. After an altercation with the Drummers, the 3 girls have different reactions. But in the end the only thing that matters is that they are running out of food and that means they must plan a shopping expedition “in a city where dangerous riots happen at the slightest provocation and even going to the shops is an ordeal requiring careful planning and a handful of Zen- inducing- grenades”.
Rodice & Halo Jones

The shopping expedition is an adventure unlike any other, but sadly the real shock awaits at home. Halo and Rodice live in an all-women floating apartment with Brinna, a motherly figure who has been murdered. Now her robotic hound Toby is out chasing the killers. But that’s not all. Ludy, despite all her musical gifts, has decided to give up in a way that is perhaps as dramatic as committing suicide: she has become a Drummer, thus forfeiting her dreams and turning her back to her talent. And she has done it only hours before her band signed a contract that would have gotten them out of the Hoop. This is what galvanizes Halo Jones and that’s when she decides she has to escape, no matter what.

After an unsettling visit to a very hostile Manhattan, Halo is hired as a waitress and she’ll be working in the Clara Pandy, commissioned for one final interstellar flight. The protagonist leaves Earth and says goodbye to her best friend, Rodice, after promising her that they’ll find each other the next year. It’s a bittersweet ending, that becomes even more dramatic thanks to Gibson’s peaceful lines and his unique visual atmosphere.

Pregúntale a Clara Pandy".

May comic / cómics de mayo

In May once again I celebrated Free Comic Book Day by going to The Turning Page, Milwaukee’s finest comic shop! (which, it so happens, is conveniently located in the east side, a couple of blocks from my house). This year I got 4 FCBD books, but this is probably the first time (in the past 5 or 6 years) that 2000AD wasn’t as entertaining as I thought it would be, however Scout Comics’ The Mall was surprisingly good. I really enjoyed the first issues of The Barrier, A Walk Through Hell and Jeepers Creepers. Sacred Creatures, American Gods and Thor continue to be really enjoyable series. DC Nation #0 had one good story (the one written by Tom King). I’m having so much fun reading the 12 trade paperbacks that I got, and I’ll be reviewing some of them in the next few weeks. Finally, my favorite comic of the month was The Highest House #4. And now without further ado here are May comics as per solicitations:

STREETS OF GLORY
(W) Garth Ennis (A) Mike Wolfer. In the past fifteen years, Joseph Dunn hasn't seen much of the little civilization Montana had to offer in 1899, but his absence along with the death of a generation has rendered the atmosphere unrecognizable. Dunn is the last of the drifters that independently roamed the western frontier of the United States in the 19th century. These were men who fought with nobility, wits, and an easily un-holstered gun at their side. The body count will rise when Dunn's trigger finger is forced to settle new problems with the only solution he knows.

WALK THROUGH HELL #1
(W) Garth Ennis (A) Goran Sudzuka (CA) Andy Clarke. So these two FBI agents walk into a warehouse… Special Agents Shaw and McGregor handle the routine cases nowadays, which is just the way Shaw likes it. She's pushing 40, a borderline burnout, the ghastly memories of her last investigation still clinging like shadows. McGregor is younger, more dedicated, hanging onto some measure of idealism whatever the world might throw at him. When two fellow agents go missing inside a Long Beach warehouse, Shaw and McGregor are sent to investigate. But what they find waiting is far from routine, as the local police have already discovered to their cost. Before the night is out, our heroes will encounter terror beyond their most appalling nightmares-in a place where the night may never end at all. A new kind of horror story for modern America, written by Garth Ennis (Preacher, The Boys, Crossed) and drawn by Goran Sudzuka (Y: The Last Man, Hellblazer).

Realmente disfruté los primeros números de The Barrier, A Walk Through Hell y Jeepers Creepers. Sacred Creatures, American Gods y Thor continúan siendo series realmente agradables.

AMERICAN GODS: MY AINSEL #3

ASTONISHING X-MEN #11

FREAKANGELS TP VOL 2

HOW TO TALK TO GIRLS AT PARTIES

WALK THROUGH HELL #1

May movies / películas de mayo

In May, I went to see Avengers: Infinity War (2018), directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, who had already made a splendid job with one of America’s most iconic heroes. I have to admit I didn’t know what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. It can’t be easy to direct a movie with over 20 characters, but I think the Russos succeeded not only in proving why these are Earth’s greatest heroes but also in creating a complex and compelling villain like Thanos. I think it doesn’t matter who your favorite Marvel hero is, you probably found at least a few good scenes with the characters you love the most. I felt particularly excited to see Doctor Strange and Thor on the spotlight, I loved the Stan Lee cameo, and I felt that the relationships between the heroes were handled in a way that added dramatic depth despite the fact that this is an action-oriented movie. Of course, this one (even more so than the others) has an impressive cast: Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Chris Evans (Captain America), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Paul Bettany (Vision), Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts), etc. I really enjoyed Avengers: Infinity War and I can’t wait to see the sequel!

Man), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Chris Evans (Captain America), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Paul Bettany (Vision), Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts), etc.
