The Legion # 6, 7 & 8 - Abnett, Lanning & Coipel

Still reeling from the shock of recent events, the legionnaires decide to confront Earth’s president, a man who has ruined the government’s reputation and violated the laws of the United Planets. And that’s the beginning of “Terror Incognita”, a 3 part odyssey that chronicles the showdown between the Legion and Ra’s Al Ghul.

“Terrorform” (published in The Legion # 6, May 2002) shows the scope of Ra’s Al Ghul’s plans, an immortal man who has been preparing the destruction of humankind for centuries. After exterminating all humans, the Head of the Demon plans to replace them “with something infinitely better”.

The legionnaires defeat the Oversight Watch, an elite mercenary team designated to protect the president. However, Ra’s Al Ghul manages to outsmart the Legion. An understandable victory if one remembers that two thousand years ago, this villain had battled hundreds of times with Batman as well as with the world’s greatest superheroes. Meanwhile, in Xanthu, Star Boy and Xs realize that Robotica’s Baseworld is heading towards another sector of the galaxy, a fact confirmed by Dreamer’s precognitive abilities.

In “Fear of Change” (The Legion # 7), the second chapter, Kid Quantum, Cosmic Boy, Ultra Boy, Leviathan, Brainiac 5, Chameleon, Shikari, Gates and Triad try to do everything they can to prevent the terraforming of Earth. The evolutionary challenge presented by Ra’s Al Ghul is a tough one. Outclassed and overwhelmed by the attack of the Head of the Demon, the legionnaires fight desperately.

The final battle between the Legion and Ra’s Al Ghul takes place in “Hypersapiens” (The Legion # 8). Without his Oversight Watch and the assistance of the mysterious Venge, the Head of the Demon realizes that it’s time for him to actively participate in the struggle. And so he does. Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning designed an amazing fighting choreography in which Ra’s Al Ghul defeats most of the legionnaires; and just like Batman, his nemesis, he uses only his superior intellect and his agility.

Personally, this is one of my favorite moments. The physical confrontation is not what really matters here but rather the mental duel between the galaxy’s favorite sons and daughters and an immortal man who is fed up with humanity. Ra’s Al Ghul knows exactly when and how to strike, and using only the strength of an average human he manages to subjugate Shikari, Chameleon, Cosmic Boy, Leviathan, Ultra Boy and Kid Quantum. Sequences like this surely inspired writers like Brad Meltzer, who in “Identity Crisis” also described how a human villain (Deathstroke) could overthrow the entire Justice League of America. In any case, it’s one of the best action scenes I could remember.

Finally, M’Onel engages in combat with Ra’s Al Ghul. For an entire year, the Daxamite had been following the orders of the Head of the Demon, disguised as the president of the world. Now he isn’t taking orders anymore. And he’s angry enough to defeat Batman’s archenemy.

The timely arrival of Legion World and the rest of the legionnaires allows the Legion to stop the Moon from colliding against our planet. Of course, “Terror Incognita” wouldn’t have been as impressive without the amazing art by Olivier Coipel. Coipel emphasizes the iconic nature of the heroes of the 31st century, while retaining a fresh and youthful atmosphere. His dominion over composition is made evident, for instance, in the fight between Ra’s Al Ghul and the legionnaires. And at last, but not least, I would like to mention his spectacular covers, from a delightfully villainous image in issue # 6, with the legionnaires crushed by the immortal’s fist, to a simple and yet effective concept in issue # 7, and to the incredible confrontation in issue # 8.

The Legion with the Science Police / la Legión con la Policía Científica
