Stan Lee (1922-2018)

He didn’t just create one or two characters. He created an entire universe. No other contemporary writer has been able to achieve such a feat. The fact that Stan Lee’s numerous creations are still thriving in comic books and other media is a testament to his creativity.

After a short trip to San Francisco, I woke up today to the beeps and rings of my phone. Some friends from Milwaukee were sharing the sad news with me. I was deeply saddened to find out that the most influential creator ever had passed away. Stan Lee was 95 years old but he was such an active and energetic man that he became almost as legendary as his own superheroes. Perhaps for us, the readers, he seemed to be blessed with the immortality of Marvel’s pantheon of superhumans. And I must say that I was sure I would be able to run into him one day, at a comic book convention. I guess I waited too long. After being here in the US for more than 2 years I never managed to find the time to go to that comic book convention. Since I recently moved to California I was planning to visit either San Francisco or Los Angeles, Stan Lee’s home.

I started this blog 8 years ago and I’ve written about different authors but I would need at least 8 more years to review all the amazing comics Stan Lee wrote during his years at Marvel Comics. One of Stan Lee’s favorite personal creations was the Silver Surfer, and I would like to take a quote from the Herald of Galactus: “It is not given to us to know whether we shall succeed or not. In failure there is no disgrace. There can be but one ultimate shame… the cowardice of not having tried”. As an independent comic book creator, I can only be thankful to Lee for inspiring millions of readers, myself included, but also for making me realize that I should not give up, and I should always keep trying, I should always keep writing.

Farewell Stan. You will be dearly missed.

  2. He was there pretty much since the beginning of superhero comics in 1939. He certainly had an amazing run. I guess now he's hanging out with the Watchers all the time.

    1. Indeed. If Valhalla was paradise for those deemed as worthy warriors, I'm sure there is a special kind of paradise for those who spent so many years creating so many awesome characters.
