Esta semana se inauguró, en la Galería Forum, la muestra fotográfica de Daniel Benaim. Especialmente interesante son las fotos de la cuarta serie "Planta alta". No solamente por la conjugación entre lo urbano y lo natural, sino por la presencia a veces apenas perceptible de gente anónima en estas imágenes. Las personas aparecen allí casi como siluetas oblicuas, por momentos el ojo inexperto podría pensar que el fotógrafo se descuidó y la gente terminó colándose en la foto. No es así. Hay un cuidado meticuloso que crea una sensación particular en el espectador. Sin duda, valió la pena asistir a la inauguración.
Lejos del esquema de Benaim, este dibujo hecho a lápiz se enfoca, precisamente, en un grupo de hombres y mujeres.

This week I had the opportunity to go to the inauguration of Daniel Benaim's photographic exhibit. Some of the images that I consider especially interesting are not only a combination of urban and natural elements, but also a peculiar approach to people. Unknown people have a somewhat oblicuous presence that generates an interesting feeling in the viewer.
Opposite to Benaim's proposal, this pencil-made drawing focus on a group of men and women.
Yesterday I was in the inauguration of Patricia Eyzaguirre's art exhibit. She is a kind and communicative individual, and I think that her art expresses that. Her art summons an original beauty made out of calm and serenity, as if the artist were about to resolve her conflicts and vital turmoil. Her images, of course, don't draw upon typical examples of beauty.
I, however, still have a certain predilection towards classic beauty. Perhaps that's why I include elements like the Laocoonte group in my drawings.

El día de ayer asistí a la inauguración de la muestra de Patricia Eyzaguirre, en la galería Yvonne Sanguinetti. Como persona Patricia es amable y comunicativa, y algo de esto se expresa en su arte. Un arte donde la belleza es lo más importante, y en donde se crea una sensación de calma, de sosiego, como si los conflictos internos y el remolino vital de la artista estuvieran prontos a resolverse. Por supuesto, sus imágenes no son ejemplos típicos de belleza, y precisamente en ello reside su originalidad.
Yo, por ejemplo, tengo cierta predilección por la belleza clásica. Tal vez por eso de vez en cuando incluyo elementos como el grupo de Laocoonte en mis dibujos.

On Wednesday 22nd two art inaugurations took place. The second week of September the same thing happened. How unfortunate that inaugurations are planned for the same date. I was torn... My intention was to attend both but in the end I only went to one, in Galería Vértice. I run into some old friends and thanks to some fine red and white wine time just flew by. Atist Harry Chávez aptly reinvents some iconic images of Peruvian pop culture.
I think we all love pop culture one way or another. But what constitutes pop culture varies enormously from one country to another. Here I drew a well known ceremonial Klingon sword that all Star Trek fans would deem as a great example of pop culture. But is it recognizable for everyone else? Hard to tell.

El miércoles 22 hubo dos inauguraciones de arte. Lo mismo ocurrió la segunda semana de setiembre, con la inauguración de las muestras de arte en las galerías Yvonne Sanguinetti y Lucía de la Puente, así como la inauguración de la muestra de muebles de diseño en Dédalo. Asistí a las dos primeras pero me resultó imposible llegar a la tercera. Debería haber más cuidado con las fechas, uno no puede desdoblarse y estar en todas partes al mismo tiempo. Esta vez asistí a la inauguración en la Galería Vértice; me encontré con algunos viejos amigos y entre tintos y blancos el tiempo pasó volando. El artista Harry Chávez reinventa imágenes icónicas de la cultura popular peruana (o selvática, para ser más preciso) con gran acierto.
Creo que a todos nos encanta la cultura popular de un modo u otro. Pero lo que es considerado popular varía enormemente de un país a otro. Aquí he dibujado una espada ceremonial Klingon que todos los fans de Star Trek calificarían como un gran ejemplo de cultura popular. Pero ¿puede este boceto ser reconocido por todos? Lo dudo.
Last week I went to the inauguration of "Precise Indifference", a photographic exhibit of Jorge Miño. Urban landscapes become something new under a different and unusual perspective. Restriction Lines and Paranoid Park are among my favorite works. The first one is a reinterpretation of structural elements that we all know very well, but there is such a thorough reimagining of those elements that the picture surprises the viewer. The second one perhaps alludes to the remarkable Gus Van Sant film “Paranoid Park”.
Now in this drawing I present the opposite concept of Precise Indifference. This sketch is almost a postal card, it’s the typical angle, common and easily recognizable. A friend of mine from Chicago saw it and recognized the park immediately. He asked me if I had been there. I told him I had never visited Chicago. To see how fast he could recognize the park made me feel quite satisfied.
In the second drawing I wanted to get the lizard skin right, so I put some detail in the scales. I had fun drawing this and this (as you can see).

La semana pasada asistí a la inauguración de la muestra fotográfica de Jorge Miño en la galería Enlace, en San Isidro. "Precisa Indiferencia" reúne fotos que parten de un cierto paisaje urbano o de una cierta arquitectura para indagar más allá de lo inmediato. "Líneas de contención" y "Paranoid Park" son quizá las que más me han impactado. La primera por ser un trabajo meticuloso que parte de elementos estructurales que todos podemos haber visto, pero desde un ángulo novedosa. La segunda es un interesante ejercicio de movimiento y supongo que el título no es gratuito y hace referencia a la extraordinaria película dee Gus Van Sant.
En este dibujo presento la antítesis del concepto detrás de "Precisa Indiferencia". Esta imagen es casi una postal, es decir, es un ángulo típico, absolutamente reconocible y perfectamente común. Tal vez en eso resida su encanto. Un amigo norteamericano que vive en Chicago la vio y dijo inmediatamente el nombre del parque. "¿Has estado allí?", me preguntó. Yo le expliqué que jamás había visitado Chicago. Me sentí satisfecho con el dibujo. Era fácilmente reconocible.
En el segundo dibujo quería una piel de lagarto que se viera verídica, así es que hice escamas algo detalladas. Fue divertido terminar esta imagen (creo que eso resulta evidente).
I invited a friend for lunch and I made an avocado salad with lettuce, sesame and chestnuts.
Then I made gnocchi (I love making gnocchi but it sure takes its time, boiling the potatos, peeling them off, and then adding the flour, etc.).
I added a parsley and garlic sauce, with a bit of thyme (slightly improvised, but mostly from a pre-existing recipe).
And my friend brought the dessert (bought at a nearby bakery).
