July films / películas de julio

And just like I promised last month, I’ve seen more movies in July than ever before (granted, I’m exaggerating a bit, but still…). Let’s start with The Wolverine (2013), I’m a fan of the mutant of the adamantium claws, and I must say I enjoyed this sequel. As usual, Hugh Jackman is the ideal Logan. There’s a lot of action here, but also some very interesting moments (Logan having nightmares with Jean Grey, his romance with Mariko, etc.). My favorite part: the after credits scene. Spoiler alert: Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen reappear as Professor X and Magneto, just in time to fight against the sentinels in the upcoming Days of Future Past. I’m impatient already.

World War Z (2013), is a fast-paced movie that focuses on the desperate struggle of one man (Brad Pitt) against the living dead. I love zombie movies, and I simply loved WWZ, I never thought anyone could combine high-octane action with suspense sequences so brilliantly but director Marc Forster pulls it off (of course, I had high expectations since he directed “Stay”, one of the best films I’ve seen in my life). Probably the zombie movie with the largest budget ever, this is something that every horror fan (and every moviegoer) should pay attention to.

I’m preparing for the sequel of Mark Millar’s most acclaimed creation, so I just had to watch Kick-Ass (2010) again. It’s every bit as good as I remembered. Director Matthew Vaughn understands the nerdiness of the protagonist and the world of comic book fanboys as envisioned by Millar, and delivers some really emotive moments while building a captivating narrative. The movie is audacious when it has to be (for instance, showing Dave Lizewski’s masturbation marathons, which were only hinted at in the comic) but a bit too politically correct at the end (I won’t say more, but if you want a more elaborate opinion about it check my Kick-Ass review). Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s performance is absolutely great, and Chloë Grace Moretz is such a brilliant Hit-Girl. Of course, Nicolas Cage, Mark Strong and Christopher Mintz-Plasse are magnificent in their roles.

It’s no secret that I’m Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s biggest fan, and almost every month I talk about him in the cinematographic section… Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a bike messenger in New York; velocity and adrenaline are more vital to him than oxygen. That’s obvious since the opening scene of Premium Rush (2012), a production with a solid plot that quickly captures our attention, as we follow the protagonist’s adventure in the craziest and most dangerous day of his life. I really enjoyed this one, and as usual I must say Joseph Gordon-Levitt is keeping an impeccable record: he doesn’t have one bad movie (out of the 35 or 40 he’s acted in) in his filmography.

David Duchovny is a gifted filmmaker, and House of D (2004) is an extraordinary exploration of the hardships of growing up, the anxiousness of the first kiss and the strange relationship we have with our parents (and that we’re doomed to replicate with our children). At 13, Anton Yelchin is a vibrant, cheerful and enthusiastic boy. He lives with his mother, Téa Leoni, a clinically depressed nurse. There is such a strong feel of authenticity here that you feel identified with the protagonist. It doesn’t matter if you didn’t grow up in New York in the 80s, it doesn’t matter if for you puberty brought along different problems to the ones that appear here. Somehow, it all ties up together, and it all feels as real as your life or the life of your best friend. You get to know the characters so well that they feel like the people sitting next to you. And, of course, when tragedy strikes it’s impossible to contain the tears. This is by far one of the best American films I’ve seen in a long time.

Derek Cianfrance’s Blue Valentine (2010) is a bittersweet take on love and long term relationships. We follow Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams through the years, when they first meet, young and reckless, full of idealized dreams, until they grow older, get married and have a daughter, and when they finally decide they can’t stand each other. Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams are extraordinary actors who always choose the best projects, and this is no exception. Blue Valentine is sad, unpleasant, realistic and makes no concessions. A truly mature take on a subject poorly exploited by thousands of idiotic romantic comedies.

I saw Leaving Las Vegas (1995) so many years ago. And I wanted to see it again. I must say I  really enjoyed it, if enjoyment is the correct term when you’re referring to a chronicle of the last days of an alcoholic (Nicolas Cage) who decides to literally drink himself to death; on his self-destructive journey he meets a prostitute (Elisabeth Shue), but not even the company of a loving woman can save him. Director Mike Figgis shows the most awful aspects of alcoholism, the horror of addiction, and the nightmarish world of Las Vegas. With superb acting and a brilliant soundtrack, Leaving Las Vegas definitely deserves to be seen at least twice.

Wake Wood (2010) is a horror movie about a father and a mother who find the way to resurrect their daughter, who died in an accident. Of course, when she returns from the dead, she’s no longer the angelical and sweet kid she once was… she’s something evil. But despite the formulaic plot, this British production manages to mix Celtic folklore with everyday life in a small and secluded town. The result is, indeed, noteworthy.

John Carpenter’s The Fog (1980) reunites Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween) and Janet Leigh (Psycho), two actresses that every horror fan should know. When a mysterious fog appears, strange things happen in a coast town. A group of dead men murdered a century ago return with the fog that engulfs the town. I love the idea that these corpses are so horribly putrefied that they must be hidden by the unnatural fog that precedes their arrival. And this is so much better than the uninspired sequel from 2005.

Based on a theater play, François Ozon’s Dans la maison (2012) is easily one of the best French films I’ve seen in years. Ernst Umhauer is a teenager with a superior intelligence. A brilliant student, he quickly captures the attention of his literature teacher. As the teacher reads his stories, all chapters of a very ambitious novel, he realizes that his student hates and loves the bourgeois, hates and loves his own reality (marred by poverty and marginality) and hates and loves the prosperous family of his best friend. He feels to urge to penetrate inside the bourgeois family and dissect it with a mordacious and refined mordacious prose. After gaining the father’s trust by proving to be an exceptional basketball player (and showering naked with the old man), the protagonist quickly seduces the mother. But his charismatic personality also attracts his friend, a boy insecure of his feelings who, after watching him getting undressed one night, decides to kiss him. The literature teacher gets obsessed with the pages his student writes, and soon fiction becomes reality (after all, the teenager is writing about his own experiences) and everything starts to get out of hands. A brilliant script, excellent actors and fascinating characters turn Dans la maison in a contemporary masterpiece.

Perhaps Teorema (1968) directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini served as inspiration for Dans la maison. After all, in Teorema an unknown man, Terence Stamp, is welcomed by a wealthy family. He stays in the house, and immediately seduces the maid, the son, the mother, the daughter and finally the father. And then he simply leaves. His departure has a catastrophic and traumatic effect on everyone. The genius of Pasolini consists on expressing the frustrations of the life we have, on showing us that all the money in the world can’t buy happiness, and that sometimes it takes only one person, one sexual act, one moment, to realize that our existence is worthless and meaningless. Pasolini also deliberates about gender, sexuality and power structures, adding depth to the Marxist ‘proletarian versus bourgeois’ debate. An indisputable Italian classic.

From Finland comes Hymypoika (2003), directed by Jukka-Pekka Siili. Everything here revolves around the abnormal behavior of a group of teenagers. Obsessed with filming their sexual acts, Reino Nordin and his friends discover that there is a dangerous line that divides mere voyeurism from perversion. It’s almost painful to observe the frustration these kids experience, some of them have a hard time finding a sexual partner and others lose their girlfriends when they find out they’ve been filmed during intercourse. Eventually, the need for sex is replaced by the need to brag about it and, even more, to watch the sexual act on a screen over and over again. Things deteriorate: Reino Nordin is sodomized and another boy rapes a girl and videotapes the act so that he can show it to the rest of the gang… after that, only a tragic ending is possible.

Nicolas Robin is a handsome young man who has joined the French navy. Noir océan (2010) focuses on the lives of the young crew in the days of the nuclear tests in Mururoa. Nothing here breaks the routine, as these guys go through their daily chores and their boring tasks. Only interaction between the youngsters gives meaning to a mission that seems devoid of purpose. But having friends also means having problems.

Mesa sto dasos (2010) is an excessively experimental Greek movie. Since there is no conflict here, I can’t say this movie fulfills the elemental requisite of telling a story (without conflict, stories cannot exist). There are however, a few appealing scenes like the mutual masturbation sequence between two strapping young men or the non-simulated sex that takes place in the woods.
