The Legion, of course, could not survive without them. And although in many ways the title ends with the “Notorious” saga, DC would still release 5 more issues before permanently cancelling the title. “Childhood’s End” (published in The Legion # 34, August 2004) was arguably the best of these 5 final issues. Keith Champagne wrote quite an entertaining stand-alone issue, a feat that always requires a good grasp on narrative techniques and imaginative ideas. Champagne revisits Qward, the planet that was conquered by the Anti-Monitor in Crisis on Infinite Earths. Probably no other writer had ever thought about finding out what had happened to the people of Qward after the death of the Anti-Monitor, so I think Champagne really nailed it when he took the legionnaires to this forsaken corner of the galaxy.
The villain of “Childhood’s End” is Lord Thalon, who has captured Wildfire to use him as a source of energy for the entire planet. Lord Thalon has a son, and he’s the one who tells the story: “My father is ruthless. He is cunning. He is powerful beyond measure. My father is feared. I want to be just like him when I grow up”. The tyrant, however, is defeated by a group of legionnaires, and the son swears to become a powerful man and destroy the Legion. Once again, veteran penciler Steve Lightle returns to the title that made him famous; his exquisite lines and his innovative designs are but a sample of his dedication as an artist. Lightle’s cover is spectacular too.
