Instead of purchasing Marvel or DC Comics from the 90s (perhaps the only decade in history mocked by comic book fans due to the low quality of titles and the awful artistic styles that were in vogue back then), I was getting 2000 AD progs from the late 70s and early 80s; instead of the electric blue Superman I was enjoying John Byrne’s memorable run; instead of the tight-pants-and-jacket Wonder Woman from the 90s, I was just getting familiar with George Pérez take on the Amazon princess; instead of the big guns and the abundance of pouches that dominated the designs of X-Men costumes in those years, I was being delighted by the elegant and classic look –black and yellow– of the New Mutants. So in a way I was traveling back in time. I wasn’t familiar with any of the current output, but I was an expert in 80s comics. And I’m glad things worked out that way, after all, I had the opportunity to read some of the best comics ever published.
Obviously, now I can’t do that time-traveling trick. I get fresh comics every month and I spend so many hours in comic book related pages that, one way or another, I’m quite familiar with everything that is going on in titles that I don’t even read. Which is why I absolutely love projects like Mark Millar’s Chrononauts. Not only do I get to read a fun and action-packed adventure about time traveling, but I also get to reminisce dozens of classic Tharg’s Future Shocks and Time Twisters.
the first adventure / la primera aventura |
Chrononauts begins with best pals Corbin Quinn and Danny Reilly, they also happen to be the brightest scientists in their respective fields. Together, they have created the chrono-suits that allow them to travel through the timestream. But instead of a careful and rational exploration of past eras, the two buddies embark upon a destructive journey.
Millar has always had a good sense of humor, and that has been a constant element in previous works. Chrononauts is an amusing and lighthearted series, more action-oriented than character-driven. And that's perfectly fine. However I miss the subversive nature of other Millarworld titles. Kick-Ass was a reinvention / parody of the superhero genre, MPH a social criticism on the risks of uncontrolled capitalism and the bankruptcy of American industries, The Secret Service was a parable about social climbing and overcoming one’s humble origins, Jupiter’s Legacy was a cautionary tale about spoiled kids squandering and disrespecting their parents heritage, Nemesis was an unapologetic tour de force through the most sinister desires of the world’s wealthiest men, Starlight was a homage to old adventurers and how they might deal with retirement and old age and Chosen was an indictment on religious zealousness. Chrononauts, however, seems to be only a celebration of comradery and bromance.
Although a few years ago I had never even heard of him, Sean Gordon Murphy has quickly become one of my all-time favorite artists. His talent shines through the pages of Chrononauts and, as usual, he transmits pure energy and movement; his vibrant pages provide the reader with a unique aesthetic feast. I had already praised his art in “Punk Rock Jesus” but here it looks even better (in part thanks to the spectacular coloring provided by Matt Hollingsworth). As Blake Northcott explains “Chrononauts is pure eye Candy. Few can match the frenetic visual flair of Sean Murphy, who effortlessly brings a sweeping, cinematic style to Millar’s prose”.

DeleteI imagine most of us if we could time travel would end up making a hash of it.
ReplyDeleteWell, I still think most of us would fare better than the protagonists of this miniseries.
DeleteI really enjoyed your blog on Chrononauts. I love Mark Millar and can't wait to see what he writes next.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm currently reading Jupiter's Circle, which is Millar's prequel to Jupiter's Legacy.
DeleteSo I'll have a new Millar review ready in a couple of months.
