March Comics / Cómics de marzo

March was great not only because of spring break but also because of the amazing comics I got. First of all, I wanted to talk about Marvel’s Conan the Barbarian Omnibus, a beautiful edition with the entire Barry Windsor-Smith run! Fantastic Four and Thor were good, but Invaders was better. Conan the Barbarian # 4 was surprising, definitely the best one in the series so far. Oliver and Die are among the best this month, but if I had to choose my favorite comic, then it would be the first issue of Spider-Man: Life Story. And now without further ado here are March comics as per solicitations:

Marzo fue un mes estupendo no solamente por las vacaciones de primavera sino también por los asombrosos cómics que recibí. Antes que nada, quería hablar de Conan the Barbarian Omnibus de Marvel, una preciosa edición con toda la etapa de Barry Windsor-Smith. Fantastic Four y Thor van bien, pero Invaders estuvo mejor. Conan the Barbarian # 4 fue sorprendente, el mejor de la serie hasta ahora. Oliver y Die estuvieron entre lo mejor del mes, pero si tuviera que elegir, mi cómic favorito del mes sería el primer número de Spider-Man: Life Story. The Further Adventures of Nick Wilson - Eddie Gorodetsky, Marc Andreyko & Stephen Sadowski

Common sense dictates that if you’re a superhero, then victory is always guaranteed. And that’s how it was for Nick Wilson, until one day, without any warning or reason, he lost all his superpowers. As the years went by, Nick was unable to recover from that loss, and he sunk deeper and deeper in a life that had become irrelevant. He has gained weight and he has resorted to smoking marijuana to avoid the ugly reality. This is the initial premise established by Eddie Gorodetsky (writer of TV series like “The Big Bang Theory” and “Two and a Half Men”) and Marc Andreyko (famous for his run on DC’s Manhunter).

The Further Adventures of Nick Wilson is a 5-issue miniseries published between January and May 2018, and from the very beginning, it set out not to impress the reader with superheroic feats but rather with the daily life challenges that Nick Wilson must deal with. He’s no longer super, and now he makes a living by disguising of his old self, and putting up a show in birthday parties for kids. There is nothing glamorous about it, and he barely makes enough to buy weed and pay the rent.

According to David Mandel “Nick Wilson used to change the course of mighty rivers and bend steel with his mighty hands. Now he’s sitting on his couch, getting high in Cleveland. Andreyko and Gorodetsky may have the final word on superheroes, and they do it with one who’s powerless, penniless and so sad, it’s hilarious”. Of course, there’s a reason why the story takes place in Cleveland. Nick Wilson is Superman. Or was Superman. He could fly, he was invulnerable, he had super-strength, super hearing, vision powers, etc. The creators of Superman, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, both grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. In a subtle way, Andreyko pays homage to the men behind the first superhero of them all.

Even before reading the solicitation of the first issue, the cover had already caught my attention. Pete Woods takes us inside Nick’a apartment, and we see how colorless, how monotone, his life has become, the only bright thing, the only colorful thing, is his superhero costume, hanging behind him. Nick’s days as a hero are clearly behind him. But what happened with his former adversaries? What happened with his old arch-nemesis? Is the evil genius Clive Morganfeld living a miserable existence just like Nick? On the contrary, Clive has become a wealthy business man and he has enough millions at his disposal to start a bold new project: exploiting the figure of Nick Wilson, the hero, by tapping into the nostalgia of thousands of fans that still remember the golden days. In order to accomplish this, Clive decides to hire his former enemy, Nick. 

Nick Wilson must evaluate the possibilities in front of him. He can keep struggling to make ends meet or he can accept Clive’s offer and finally start making money. But isn’t that like selling his soul to the devil? At the same time, Nick runs into his former high school sweetheart but they’re in a different place now, and they no longer seem to be able to reconnect on a romantic level. She even refuses to go with him to their high school reunion. That is a very interesting chapter, as Nick tries to reconcile who he was and how promising his life seemed to be, with the reality of the present. Clive’s son, who feels maligned by his own father, quickly becomes friends with Nick and ends up hooking up with a quarterback that was still in the closet back in high school. There are many details like this, that could be clumsily handled by other writers, but thanks to Andreyko’s sensibilities all narrative elements are seamlessly integrated in a cohesive whole. 

Nick Wilson

Marc Andreyko has never let me down as a writer, and yet, for some reason, I didn’t have the chance until now to review his work. “I knew it from Manhunter, Torso and Love is Love. Now, Nick Wilson will show you that Marc Andreyko is one of the best writers and most unique voices in comics. This book is earthy and honest”, affirms Brian Michael Bendis, and I completely agree with him. In fact, I bestowed upon Love is Love the coveted Arion’s Achievement Award for best single issue of 2016. 

“Stephen Sadowski’s art is masterfully natural, smooth, and funny”, indeed, Sadowski’s effortlessly sets the mood of the story, but I must also compliment Ian Churchill, not only for his magnificent covers (every month it was quite difficult for me to choose between Woods or Churchill’s covers), but also for his work on issue # 4, in which he illustrates the story using a wide range of styles, proving his versatility and his impressive artistic talent. 

Years ago... / hace años...

“This book really got to me. It pretends to be cynical, but there is a beautiful, beating heart at the center of it”, explains Brad Meltzer, and I agree with him. Every month I was eagerly awaiting the next issue, and I did find that unique flare that I rarely see in more commercial publications. Definitely one of the best miniseries of 2018. I highly recommend it.

The Further Adventures of Nick Wilson es una miniserie de 5 números publicada entre enero y mayo de 2018, y desde el principio la idea no es impresionar al lector con hazañas superheroicas sino con los desafíos de la vida diaria que Nick Wilson debe enfrentar. Ya no es súper, y ahora se gana la vida disfrazándose de su antiguo ‘yo’ y montando un espectáculo en fiestas de cumpleaños para niños. No hay nada de glamoroso en eso, y apenas gana lo suficiente para comprar marihuana y pagar el alquiler.

Según David Mandel, “Nick Wilson solía cambiar el curso de los poderosos ríos y doblar el acero con sus poderosas manos. Ahora está sentado en su sofá, drogado en Cleveland. Remembering the past / recordando el pasado

Incluso antes de leer el resumen del argumento del primer número, la portada ya había llamado mi atención. Pete Woods nos lleva al apartamento de Nick, y vemos cuán incolora, cuán monótona se ha vuelto su vida, la única cosa brillante, la única cosa colorida, es su disfraz de superhéroe, colgado detrás de él. Los días de Nick como héroe están claramente detrás de él. Pero, ¿qué pasó con sus antiguos adversarios? ¿Qué pasó con su viejo archienemigo? ¿El genio malvado Clive Morganfeld vive una vida miserable como Nick? Por el contrario, Clive se ha convertido en un rico hombre de negocios y tiene suficientes millones a su disposición para comenzar un nuevo proyecto audaz: explotar la figura de Nick Wilson, el héroe, aprovechando la nostalgia de miles de admiradores que todavía recuerdan la época dorada. Multiple perspectives on the same event / múltiples perspectivas de un mismo evento

Nick Wilson debe evaluar las posibilidades. Puede seguir haciendo malabares para llegar a fin de mes o puede aceptar la oferta de Clive y finalmente comenzar a ganar dinero. ¿Pero no es eso como vender su alma al diablo? Al mismo tiempo, Nick se encuentra con su antigua novia de la secundaria, pero ahora están distanciados y ya no parecen capaces de volver a conectarse a un nivel romántico. Incluso ella se niega a ir con él a la reunión de la escuela secundaria. Este es un capítulo muy interesante, ya que Nick intenta reconciliar quién era y cuán prometedora parecía ser su vida, con la realidad del presente. El hijo de Clive, que se siente despreciado por su propio padre, rápidamente se hace amigo de Nick y termina ligando con un mariscal de campo que todavía estaba en el closet en la etapa escolar. Before the museum inauguration / antes de la inauguración del museo

“El arte de Stephen Sadowski es magistralmente natural, fino y divertido”, de hecho, Sadowski establece sin esfuerzo el ambiente de la historia, pero también debo felicitar a Ian Churchill, no sólo por sus magníficas portadas (cada mes era bastante difícil para mí elegir entre las portadas de Woods o Churchill), pero también por su trabajo en el número 4, en el que ilustra la historia utilizando una amplia gama de estilos, demostrando su versatilidad y su impresionante talento artístico.

“Este cómic realmente me atrapó. Pretende ser cínico, pero hay un corazón hermoso y palpitante en el centro”, explica Brad Meltzer, y vaya que eso es cierto. Todos los meses esperaba ansiosamente el próximo número, y encontré esa flama que rara vez veo en publicaciones comerciales. Definitivamente una de las mejores miniseries del 2018. La recomiendo de todas maneras.

May Comics / cómics de mayo

I guess, one way or another, we all celebrated Free Comic Book Day in May. However, unlike previous years, instead of my usual 5 FCBD books I only got 2 (shame on you, DCBS!). I got Archie, which was surprisingly good and 2000AD, which was extraordinary (I absolutely loved it). Marvel continues to do an outstanding job with monthly series like Silver Surfer and International Iron Man (I didn’t think I could enjoy Bendis and Maleev’s title so much). Of course, nothing could be better than the Uncanny X-Men Omnibus Vol. 1, almost 1000 pages of classic X-Men stories, mostly illustrated by John Byrne, one of my all-time favorite artists and the reason why I decided to get this gigantic book. Speaking of reprints, Gaiman and Zulli’s The Facts in the Case of the Departure of Miss Finch was also wonderful. Strange Fruit continues to be one of the best miniseries (and J.G. Jones art is top notch). Finally, there were two very interesting new series in May: the first issue of Renato Jones was aesthetically delightful but the best comic of the month would be Cinema Purgatorio #1, an impressive anthology that reunites authors such as Alan Moore, Garth Ennis, Kieron Gillen, Gabriel Andrade, Kevin O’Neil, Ignacio Calero, etc. And now, without further ado, here are May comics as per solicitations:

Supongo que, de un modo u otro, todos celebramos el Free Comic Book Day en mayo. Sin embargo, a diferencia de años anteriores, en vez de 5 cómics del FCBD sólo recibí 2. Me quedé con Archie, que fue toda una sorpresa, y con el extraordinario 2000AD (realmente me encantó). Marvel continúa haciendo un trabajo sobresaliente con series mensuales como "International Iron Man" (no pensé que disfrutaría tanto con esta colección de Bendis y Maleev) y "Silver Surfer". Por supuesto, nada podría superar a "Uncanny X-Men Omnibus Vol. 1", casi 1000 páginas de historias clásicas de los X-Men, la mayoría ilustradas por John Byrne, uno de mis artistas favoritos de todos los tiempos, Byrne es la razón por la que decidí conseguir específicamente este tomo gigantesco. Hablando de reimpresiones, "The Facts in the Case of the Departure of Miss Finch" de Gaiman y Zulli fue también maravilloso. "Strange Fruit" continúa siendo una de las mejores miniseries (y el arte de J.G. Jones es de primer nivel). Finalmente, hubo dos nuevas series muy interesantes en mayo: el primer número de "Renato Jones" fue estéticamente delicioso pero el mejor cómic del mes sería Cinema Purgatorio # 1, una impresionante antología con autores como Alan Moore, Garth Ennis, Kieron Gillen, Gabriel Andrade, Kevin O’Neil, Ignacio Calero, etc. Y ahora, sin mayores preámbulos, aquí están los cómics de mayo:

We Stand On Guard - Brian K. Vaughan & Steve Skroce

For decades, it has been a commonplace in comics or movies to portray Americans as the good guys, and other nations as potential or real enemies. While some might consider this as evidence of a twisted ideology, I simply see it in terms of the place of enunciation within the entertainment industry. Which makes sense if we remember that, in addition of being the hero (never the villain) of your own story, you will probably insert your narrative line into familiar surroundings, id est, your state, city or town.

In We Stand On Guard, Brian K. Vaughan abandons the fantasy genre that has been so rewarding to him in titles like “Saga” to return to his roots, the realm of science fiction in general, and the post-apocalyptical subgenre in particular. In the same way that “Y The Last Man” was about the struggle for survival after a major catastrophe, We Stand On Guard focus on two survivors (brother and sister), two Canadians that have made it through the cataclysmic war between the United States of America and Canada. “I’ve always been fascinated by friendships and rivalries between our two great nations” explains Vaughan, and in this new miniseries, the American writer explores the notion of an all-out war between the US and Canada. 

When I first read the solicitations for We Stand On Guard I thought this was a very amusing premise, and I was sure that every Vaughan fan would enjoy it. Turns out, I was wrong. As we can see in the letter section, the American writer received a few angry messages from his own countrymen. One particular reader from Kentucky accused Brian K. Vaughan of being a liberal (whatever the hell that means in our postmodern society), and admits he’s disgusted by the way the US is portrayed here, like “a violent, bloodthirsty nation who murders civilians in [a] surprise attack”. However, in real life the United States isn’t always seen like a benevolent nation (and it has been that way for years). So that’s why it’s so important for Vaughan to subvert the basic assumption of “Americans are always the good guys”.  

I think there is something especially alluring about this confrontation, because Americans and Canadians actually have so much in common that one automatically considers them as the ideal allies but never as enemies. Here, nevertheless, things are different. And as we follow the misadventures of a Canadian guerrilla group we also get to see the cruelty of the US military leaders. Vaughan balances the fight sequences with flashbacks to the past, in which we get to know how the protagonists survived in a hostile environment. 

Before the war / antes de la guerra

According to Jim Johnson, Vaughan's miniseries is an “excellent futuristic military thriller”, but this isn’t the kind of book that attempts to provide a definitive answer: “the questions that remain are the stuff of modern day political arguments, where each side believes themselves to be correct”. Both Canadians and Americans seem to share a lot of responsibility regarding the origin of the war. 

I had very fond memories of Steve Skroce, he was one of the few Marvel pencilers in the 90s who had his own style, different to what was ‘fashionable’ back then. I saw his work for the first time in the pages of X-Man, and I became a fan right away. Of course now, after 20 years, Skroce has changed and evolved as an artist. Perhaps his experience drawing storyboards for the Wachowskis (in “The Matrix” trilogy) has given him more refinement and confidence than ever. His pages now have a calmness and a clarity that were absent in his X-Man days. And his covers are imaginative, subtle and stunning. 

“Skroce does get more opportunity to show off his skills beyond drawing impressive military hardware; he adds a futuristic flair to urban landscapes as well, all while rendering the timeless beauty of nature with equal dexterity. Colorist Matt Hollingsworth’s enhancements make all of it look beautiful, breathtaking or alarming, depending on the context”, affirms Jim Johnson, and I agree with him.

Canada under attack / Canadá bajo ataque

The author had already reflected upon international politics in his critically acclaimed “Y: The Last Man”, and in We Stand On Guard the creative team “successfully take elements from today’s headlines and, with the slightest of nudges, turn them into something decidedly threatening, surprisingly believable and tremendously engaging”, explains Jim Johnson. Certainly, we should be thanking Vaughan and Skroce for producing such a fine miniseries.

Mientras que algunos podrían considerar esto como la evidencia de una retorcida ideología política, para mí es simplemente consecuencia del lugar de enunciación al interior de la industria del entretenimiento. Es lógico que, además de ser el héroe (nunca el villano) de tu propia historia, también insertes la línea narrativa en un entorno familiar, es decir, tu estado, ciudad o pueblo.

Canadian guerrilla / la guerrilla canadiense

En “We Stand On Guard”, Brian K. Vaughan abandona el género fantástico que ha sido tan ventajoso para él en títulos como “Saga” para volver a sus raíces, el reino de la ciencia ficción en general, y el subgénero post-apocalíptico, en particular. De la misma manera que en “Y The Last Man” veíamos la lucha por la supervivencia después de una gran catástrofe, “We Stand On Guard” se enfoca en dos supervivientes (hermano y hermana), dos canadienses que han resistido la guerra catastrófica entre los Estados Unidos de América y Canadá. “Siempre he estado fascinado por las amistades y rivalidades entre nuestras dos grandes naciones”, explica Vaughan, y en esta nueva miniserie, el escritor estadounidense explora la noción de una guerra sin cuartel entre ambos países.

Desde el inicio, la premisa de “We Stand On Guard” me pareció bastante amena, y estaba seguro de que todos los fans de Vaughan la disfrutarían. Aunque no fue así del todo. Como podemos ver en la sección de cartas, el escritor estadounidense recibió algunos airados mensajes de sus propios compatriotas. Un lector de Kentucky, por ejemplo, acusaba a Brian K. Vaughan de ser un liberal (lo que sea que aquello signifique en nuestra sociedad postmoderna), y admitió estar disgustado por la forma en que los Estados Unidos es retratado aquí, como “una nación violenta y sanguinaria que asesina civiles en [un] ataque sorpresa”. Sin embargo, en la vida real Estados Unidos no siempre es vista como una nación benevolente (y eso no es algo nuevo). Así que por eso es tan importante para Vaughan subvertir el supuesto básico de “los norteamericanos son siempre los buenos”.

Vi su trabajo por primera vez en las páginas de “X-Man”, y me convertí en un fan de inmediato. Por supuesto, ahora, después de 20 años, Skroce ha cambiado y evolucionado como artista. Quizás su experiencia como dibujante de storyboards para los Wachowski (en la trilogía de “The Matrix”) le ha dado más refinamiento y confianza que antes. February comics / cómics de febrero

February was such a good month for comics. I’m amazed by the high quality of Doctor Strange and Silver Surfer, which are quickly turning into my most eagerly-awaited monthly series. Millar is still firing on all cylinders with Huck and especially the second volume of Jupiter’s Circle. And Image has a couple of promising new series: Snowfall and Cry Havoc. However, once again my favorite comic of the month, and by quite a large margin, is Alan Moore’s Providence # 7. Can’t wait to start reviewing this series. And now without further ado here are February comics as per solicitations:
