Only 4 comics in January? Well, all I can say is that there will be more next time. Bendis continues to do a good job with the Legion of Super-Heroes, The Dollhouse Family is extraordinary, and this issue of Punisher Soviet is my favorite of the Ennis miniseries. But if I had to choose the best comic of the month then it would be Marvels X # 1, Alex Ross and Jim Krueger have done it again! And now, without further ado, here are January comics as per solicitations:

DOLLHOUSE #3

Conan the Barbarian: Exodus - Esad Ribic

Exactly a year ago, I read the first issue of the new Conan the Barbarian series edited by Marvel. It certainly was a return to greatness, after a not so stellar run in the hands of a different publisher. One of the main reasons I decided to buy all Conan issues was the cover art. Esad Ribić illustrated all 12 Conan covers last year, and each one of them is spectacular.

Ribić is a Croatian artist who started working for Marvel Comics in 2000, exceling as an cover artist in popular titles such as Wolverine, in which he got away with portraying a naked Nightcrawler in the cover of the 6th issue. In any case, “heir to masters like Frank Frazetta and Alex Ross, Ribić combines photorealism with impressionism, and the result is a premium selection of beautiful and unforgettable covers”. And in addition of being one of the best cover artists in the industry, Ribić is also an incredibly talented penciler, inker and colorist. 

Ribić is the reason why I started reading Thor: God of Thunder, and he’s the reason why I picked up the new Conan the Barbarian series, and when I saw he’d be in charge of a very special one-shot, I immediately knew I had to get it. “15 winters in Cimmeria have toughened the young Conan, but his greatest challenge lies ahead. Braving the elements, without food, without shelter, without weapons, Conan must learn to survive even as nature itself conspires to stop him. The snow freezes his bones. The wolves smell his blood. But if he can reach civilization, will his wounds heal…or will his troubles just begin?”. That is the beginning of a story written, penciled, inked and colored by the Croatian artist, and the result is absolutely impressive. 

I had no idea Ribić was such a wonderful writer, and he does what is most difficult for a writer: tell a silent story. Based on my own experience, when it comes to writing comics, there are basically 3 levels of difficulty, in the first level, the easy one, a writer uses everything at his disposal, thought balloons, captions, large exposition dialogues to explain what’s going on, etc. No good writer stays on that first level. In the second level, the intermediate one, a writer focuses on storytelling and replaces captions and thought balloons with panels that will convey that information visually. In the third level, the difficult one, a writer eliminates all text. If one can tell a story without words, then one is truly a master of the comic book medium, and that is precisely what Ribić proves in the pages of Exodus.

In this “man versus nature” setting, I can only think of masters like the Italians Berardi & Milazzo who were able to tell a moving and shocking story in 20 silent pages. Again, it isn’t an easy task to tell an entire story without a single word being pronounced by your protagonist. But Ribić doesn’t need sentences or dialogues, because one of his images is worth at least a thousand words. From the extraordinary cover in which Conan stabs a wolf with an improvised weapon, to the stunning inner art in which Conan must run from the other wolves in the pack, everything that we need to see to understand what’s going on is there, and the silence creates an even greater dramatic tension than anything else. Ribić also makes us realize how desperate Conan is, and how starvation forces him to the most reckless decisions. The absolute beauty of Ribić’s lines, his harmonic designs and his delicate chromatic balance turn each page into a unique work of art.

Hace exactamente un año, leí el primer número de la nueva serie de Conan the Barbarian editada por Marvel. Ciertamente fue un regreso a la grandeza, después de una etapa no muy estelar que digamos en manos de una editorial diferente. Una de las principales razones por las que decidí comprar todos los números de Conan fue la portada. Esad Ribić ilustró las 12 portadas de Conan el año pasado, y cada una de ellas es espectacular.

Ribić es un artista croata que comenzó a trabajar para Marvel Comics en el 2000, sobresaliendo como portadista en títulos tan populares como Wolverine, en el que se salió con la suya al retratar a un Nightcrawler desnudo en la portada del sexto número. En cualquier caso, “heredero de maestros como Frank Frazetta y Alex Ross, Ribić combina el fotorrealismo con el impresionismo, y el resultado es una excelente selección de portadas hermosas e inolvidables”. Y además de ser uno de los mejores portadistas de la industria, Ribić también es un dibujante, entintador y colorista increíblemente talentoso.

Ribić es la razón por la que comencé a leer Thor: God of Thunder, y él es la razón por la que compré la nueva serie de Conan the Barbarian, y cuando vi que estaría a cargo de un one-shot muy especial, inmediatamente supe que debía conseguirlo. “15 inviernos en Cimmeria han endurecido al joven Conan, pero su mayor desafío está por delante. Desafiando a los elementos, sin comida, sin refugio, sin armas, Conan debe aprender a sobrevivir incluso mientras la naturaleza misma conspira para detenerlo. La nieve congela sus huesos. No tenía idea de que Ribić era un escritor tan maravilloso, y hace lo más difícil que puede hacer un escritor: contar una historia silenciosa. Según mi propia experiencia, cuando se trata de escribir cómics, existen básicamente 3 niveles de dificultad, en el primer nivel, el fácil, un escritor usa todo lo que tiene a su disposición, globos de pensamiento, cajas de texto, grandes diálogos de exposición para explicar lo que está sucediendo, etc. Ningún buen escritor permanece en ese primer nivel. En el segundo nivel, el intermedio, un escritor se enfoca en la narración de historias y reemplaza las cajas de texto y los globos de pensamiento con viñetas que transmitirán esa información visualmente. En el tercer nivel, el difícil, un escritor elimina todo el texto. Si uno puede contar una historia sin palabras, entonces uno es verdaderamente un maestro del medio del cómic, y eso es precisamente lo que Ribić demuestra en las páginas de Éxodo.

En este entorno de "hombre versus naturaleza", solo puedo pensar en maestros como los italianos Berardi y Milazzo, que podían contar una historia conmovedora e impactante en 20 páginas silenciosas. Nuevamente, no es una tarea fácil contar una historia completa sin que tu protagonista pronuncie una sola palabra. Pero Ribić no necesita oraciones ni diálogos, porque una de sus imágenes vale al menos mil palabras. Desde la extraordinaria portada en la que Conan apuñala a un lobo con un arma improvisada, hasta el impresionante arte interior en el que Conan debe huir de los otros lobos de la manada, todo lo que necesitamos ver para comprender lo que está sucediendo está ahí, y el silencio crea una tensión dramática aún mayor que cualquier otra cosa. Ribić también nos hace darnos cuenta de cuán desesperado está Conan y de cómo el hambre lo obliga a tomar las decisiones más imprudentes. La belleza absoluta de las líneas de Ribić, sus diseños armónicos y su delicado equilibrio cromático convierten cada página en una obra de arte única.

December comics / cómics de diciembre

In December I traveled again to Wisconsin (it’s my fifth trip there since I moved to California), and after spending Christmas and New Year’s in Milwaukee, I came back to Davis and started reading my December comics. The much awaited conclusion of Batman Creature of the Night was great. I really enjoyed Die’s final chapter, as well as the second issue of Dollhouse, Punisher and Legion of Super-Heroes. American Gods continues to be one of the best ongoing titles, and the end of Invaders was quite fitting. However, if I had to choose the best issue of the month then that would be King Thor #4, after 8 years, Jason Aaron has put an end to his awarded run on Thor, with one final issue that is a heartfelt homage to the God of Thunder. And now, without further ado, here are December comics as per solicitations:

AMERICAN GODS #8

La tan esperada conclusión de Batman Creature of the Night estuvo estupenda. Since I went to Peru for a couple of weeks in August, I wasn’t able to read my comics until this week. But in any case, I have to say I really enjoyed catching up with ongoing titles like Die, Invaders and American Gods. I was impressed by the magnificent art in Conan the Barbarian Exodus. The Shock anthology was published last year but I bought it just now, and it’s an amazing book (with collaborators such as Neil Gaiman and Michael Zulli). Finally, my favorite comic of the month is Marvels Epilogue, by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross, a great standalone story that captures the magic of the original miniseries (published 25 years ago). And now, without further ado, here are August comics as per solicitations:

Como estuve en Perú por un par de semanas en agosto, no tuve tiempo de leer mis cómics hasta esta semana. pero en cualquier caso, debo decir que disfruté poniéndome al día con títulos como Die, Invaders and American Gods. Me impresionó el magnífico arte de Conan the Barbarian Exodus. La antología Shock se publicó el año pasado pero recién la compré ahora, y es asombrosa (tiene colaboradores como Neil Gaiman y Michael Zulli). Finalmente, mi cómic favorito del mes es Marvels Epilogue, de Kurt Busiek y Alex Ross una gran historia autoconclusiva que captura la magia de la miniserie original (que se publicó hace 25 años). Only a handful of comics in June, but I’m sure that in a few days I’ll be celebrating my birthday (July 11) with more comics than last month! I enjoyed reading Fantastic Four, Invaders and Thor (and my letter was published!). Spider-Man: Life Story was outstanding. But, against all odds, my favorite comic of the month was Mark Waid’s Ignited #1. And now without further ado here are June comics as per solicitations.

March was great not only because of spring break but also because of the amazing comics I got. First of all, I wanted to talk about Marvel’s Conan the Barbarian Omnibus, a beautiful edition with the entire Barry Windsor-Smith run! Fantastic Four and Thor were good, but Invaders was better. Conan the Barbarian # 4 was surprising, definitely the best one in the series so far. Oliver and Die are among the best this month, but if I had to choose my favorite comic, then it would be the first issue of Spider-Man: Life Story. Marzo fue un mes estupendo no solamente por las vacaciones de primavera sino también por los asombrosos cómics que recibí. Antes que nada, quería hablar de Conan the Barbarian Omnibus de Marvel, una preciosa edición con toda la etapa de Barry Windsor-Smith. Fantastic Four y Thor van bien, pero Invaders estuvo mejor. Conan the Barbarian # 4 fue sorprendente, el mejor de la serie hasta ahora. I started the year celebrating the return of one of my favorite titles from and to Marvel Comics: Conan the Barbarian, a return to greatness for the Cimmerian. Invaders #1 was a pleasant surprise. Prodigy and Die continue to amaze me. And Fantastic Four was great (especially issue #5). However, my favorite issue of the month was League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: The Tempest #2, Alan Moore is still at the top of his game. Empecé el año celebrando el regreso a Marvel Comics de una de mis colecciones favoritas: Conan the Barbarian, un retorno a la grandeza para el cimerio. Invaders #1 fue una grata sorpresa. Prodigy y Die continúan asombrándome. Y Fantastic Four está estupendo (en especial el # 5). Sin embargo, mi cómic favorito del mes fue LOEG Tempest #2, Alan Moore sigue estando en la cúspide. Y ahora sin mayores preámbulos ahí van los cómics de enero.
