June comics / cómics de junio

Only a handful of comics in June, but I’m sure that in a few days I’ll be celebrating my birthday (July 11) with more comics than last month! I enjoyed reading Fantastic Four, Invaders and Thor (and my letter was published!). Spider-Man: Life Story was outstanding. But, against all odds, my favorite comic of the month was Mark Waid’s Ignited #1. And now without further ado here are June comics as per solicitations.

Sólo un puñado de cómics en junio, pero estoy seguro que en pocos días celebraré mi cumpleaños (11 de julio) con más cómics que el mes pasado. Disfruté con la lectura de Fantastic Four, Invaders y Thor (y publicaron mi carta). Spider-Man: Life Story estuvo estupendo. March was great not only because of spring break but also because of the amazing comics I got. First of all, I wanted to talk about Marvel’s Conan the Barbarian Omnibus, a beautiful edition with the entire Barry Windsor-Smith run! Fantastic Four and Thor were good, but Invaders was better. Conan the Barbarian # 4 was surprising, definitely the best one in the series so far. Oliver and Die are among the best this month, but if I had to choose my favorite comic, then it would be the first issue of Spider-Man: Life Story. And now without further ado here are March comics as per solicitations:

Marzo fue un mes estupendo no solamente por las vacaciones de primavera sino también por los asombrosos cómics que recibí. Antes que nada, quería hablar de Conan the Barbarian Omnibus de Marvel, una preciosa edición con toda la etapa de Barry Windsor-Smith. Fantastic Four y Thor van bien, pero Invaders estuvo mejor. Conan the Barbarian # 4 fue sorprendente, el mejor de la serie hasta ahora. Oliver y Die estuvieron entre lo mejor del mes, pero si tuviera que elegir, mi cómic favorito del mes sería el primer número de Spider-Man: Life Story. January Comics / cómics de enero

I started the year celebrating the return of one of my favorite titles from and to Marvel Comics: Conan the Barbarian, a return to greatness for the Cimmerian. Invaders #1 was a pleasant surprise. Prodigy and Die continue to amaze me. And Fantastic Four was great (especially issue #5). However, my favorite issue of the month was League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: The Tempest #2, Alan Moore is still at the top of his game. And now without further ado here are January comics as per solicitations:

Empecé el año celebrando el regreso a Marvel Comics de una de mis colecciones favoritas: Conan the Barbarian, un retorno a la grandeza para el cimerio. Invaders #1 fue una grata sorpresa. Prodigy y Die continúan asombrándome. Y Fantastic Four está estupendo (en especial el # 5). Sin embargo, mi cómic favorito del mes fue LOEG Tempest #2, Alan Moore sigue estando en la cúspide. The Origins of Alpha Flight - John Byrne

It was the late 70s, and Chris Claremont and John Byrne were responsible for the huge success of The X-Men, and it was in the pages of “Home are the Heroes!” (X-Men # 109, February 1978), in which James Hudson, the Alpha Weapon, made his first appearance. This wasn’t a character created for the story, but rather a hero recycled from a Captain America storyline that never came to fruition. Byrne had originally envisioned Hudson as the Captain Canada that would be powerful enough to stand against the Sentinel of Liberty, and his name was supposed to be Guardian.

“It was, if memory serves, Roger Stern and Mark Gruenwald who came up with Vindicator, a strong but vaguely unsatisfying name. So Vindicator it was, though this might well raise the question as to just what a Canadian super hero would have to vindicate”, explains John Byrne. But it was in the pages of “Wanted Wolverine! Dead or Alive!” (X-Men # 120, April 1979) and “Shoot-Out at the Stampede” (X-Men # 121, May 1979) in which Byrne would introduce the rest of Alpha Flight: Northstar, Aurora, Sasquatch, Shaman and Snowbird. “A group that started as a bunch of ciphers whose sole purpose was to survive a fight with the X-Men became a formidable force in their own right”, affirms Byrne.

In due course, Alpha Flight members were no longer antagonists, and soon they would end up as allies of the X-Men, as can be seen in “...Something Wicked This Way Comes” (X-Men # 139, November 1980) and “Rage” (X-Men # 140, December 1980), furthermore, Alpha Flight also made appearances in titles such as The Incredible Hulk, Machine Man and Marvel Two-In-One. Fans were eager to see more of this group of Canadian mutants, who were living proof that the United States didn’t hold a monopoly on superheroes. And who else could have told stories about them if not the author who created them in the first place?

As Patrick O’Neill points out “At times, it seems as though John Byrne’s career at Marvel has consisted of taking over characters created by others… and turning them into fan favorites”, but that changed when Byrne “designed his own superhero team”. At the same time that Byrne was writing and drawing Fantastic Four, considered by fans and critics alike as one of the best runs in the history of Marvel Comics, he decided to also write and draw Alpha Flight.

Alpha Flight, Beta, Gamma

“Tundra” (originally published in Alpha Flight # 1, August 1983) marks the debut of Canada’s premier superhero team, and as Byrne would clarify later, in order to retain the right to receive royalties, he had to make a few modifications to the group of mutants that had fought against the X-Men, that’s why two new characters are added to the group: Marrina and Puck, who were part of Beta Flight. In this issue, the Canadian mutants fight against a gigantic creature called Tundra. 

In addition to the usual fights against powerful enemies, Byrne really made an effort in fleshing out characters and providing a rich and fascinating background for each one of them. That’s how, in “The Origins of Alpha Flight”, we can see why James Hudson is an unemployed engineer, and a reluctant hero, but we also see the tragic past of Shaman, Aurora’s multiple personality disorder and Northstar’s greatest concerns. 

Jean Paul Beaubier (AKA Northstar) is a ski champion and a Canadian celebrity, however he also has a secret that was still a taboo in the 80s. Jean Paul Beaubier had money and fame, and he would’ve been able to get any woman he wanted “although the women don’t seem to have interested you overmuch”, affirms James Hudson. Much in the same way that Bobby Drake (AKA Iceman) admits that he has no interest in girls in the very first issue of X-Men (only to confess his homosexuality decades later), we can see from the very beginning that Beaubier never pays attention to women. 

Shaman

When Byrne was writing Alpha Flight he decided to bravely face the censorship of the era by including a gay character: “I had recently read an article in Scientific American on what was then (the early 80s) fairly radical new thinking on just what processes caused a person to be homosexual, and the evidence was pointing increasingly to it being genetic and not environmental factors. So, I thought, it seemed like it was time for a Gay superhero, and since I was being ‘forced’ to make Alpha Flight a real series, I might as well make one of them Gay”. Although nowadays there is a proliferation of LGBT characters both in Marvel and DC books, at the time this was an unprecedented move, and a very bold one. “Of course, the temper of the times, the Powers That Were and, naturally, the Comics Code would not let me come right out and state that Jean-Paul was homosexual, but I managed to ‘get the word out’ even with those barriers”, states Byrne. 

In the end, “John Byrne helped to change the landscape of the Marvel Universe when he created the first gay Marvel superhero, Northstar, in the pages of Alpha Flight”, affirms Brian Cronin, and I completely agree with him. For us, the readers, it’s also very interesting to observe the way such an issue -which was quite controversial back then- was so subtly introduced in the pages of Alpha Flight.

Aurora & Northstar

Tundra

“Tundra” (originalmente publicado en Alpha Flight # 1, agosto de 1983) marca el debut del principal equipo de superhéroes de Canadá, y como Byrne aclararía más adelante, para retener el derecho a recibir regalías, tuvo que hacer algunas modificaciones al grupo de mutantes que había luchado contra los X-Men, es por eso que se agregaron dos nuevos personajes al grupo: Marrina y Puck, que formaban parte de Beta Flight. En este número, los mutantes canadienses luchan contra una criatura gigantesca llamada Tundra.

Además de las peleas habituales contra enemigos poderosos, Byrne realmente hizo un esfuerzo para ahondar en los personajes y proporcionar un trasfondo rico y fascinante para cada uno de ellos. Así es como, en “The Origins of Alpha Flight”, podemos ver por qué James Hudson es un ingeniero desempleado y un héroe reacio, pero también vemos el trágico pasado de Shaman, el trastorno de personalidad múltiple de Aurora y las mayores preocupaciones de Northstar.

Jean Paul Beaubier (alias Northstar) es un campeón de esquí y una celebridad canadiense, sin embargo, también tiene un secreto que todavía era un tabú en los 80s. Entonces, pensé, parecía que era hora de que haya un superhéroe gay, y como estaba siendo 'forzado' a convertir Alpha Flight en una serie real, podría convertir a uno de ellos en Gay”. Aunque hoy en día hay una proliferación de personajes LGBT en los títulos de Marvel y DC, en esa época este fue un movimiento sin precedentes, y muy audaz. “Por supuesto, el temperamento de los tiempos, los Poderes que Eran y, naturalmente, el Código de Cómics no me permitían salir y decir que Jean-Paul era homosexual, pero logré que se 'corriera la voz' incluso con aquellas barreras”, afirma Byrne.

Al final, “John Byrne ayudó a cambiar el horizonte del Universo Marvel cuando creó al primer superhéroe gay de Marvel, Northstar, en las páginas de Alpha Flight”, afirma Brian Cronin, y estoy totalmente de acuerdo con él. Para nosotros, los lectores, también es muy interesante observar la manera tan sutil en que se introdujo ese tema -que era bastante controversial- en las páginas de Alpha Flight.

October Comics / Cómics de octubre

October wasn’t an abundant month for comics, but I really enjoyed re-reading Freakangels. Thor was OK, American Gods was great but Magic Order # 3 was even greater (this the best I’ve read from Millar in a long time, plus Coipel’s art is amazing). And now without further ado, here are October comic as per solicitations:  

AMERICAN GODS: MY AINSEL #7

FREAKANGELS TP VOL 1

The first arc of the ongoing, post-apocalyptic saga is a must-have for fans of the online series, or a perfect starting point for new readers! So welcome to Whitechapel, some years from now, just barely above ground in a flooded England, where a clan of eleven strange people with purple eyes -- the Freakangels -- have carved out some sort of a life for themselves. Octubre no fue precisamente abundante en materia comiquera, pero realmente disfruté releyendo Freakangels. Thor estuvo OK. American Gods estuvo estupendo pero Magic Order #3 fue incluso mejor (es lo mejor que he leído de Millar en mucho tiempo y el arte de Coipel es asombroso). X-Men: Rites of Passage - Chris Claremont & John Byrne

After the Dark Phoenix Saga it was difficult for most fans to imagine a story that could by just as powerful and intense. And once again, Claremont and Byrne proved with Days of Future Past why they were the best creative team in the industry. It’s been almost 40 years since they reached their creative peak, and ever since then there have been only a handful of runs just as meaningful and unforgettable (namely Morrison’s New X-Men and Whedon and Cassaday’s Astonishing X-Men). 

Terry Austin

For Claremont, the emotional resonance of the Phoenix saga emanates from Jean Grey and a fundamental question about responsibility: “The key is never the power, whether to leap buildings in a single bound or reshape the shape and structure of tangible causality, but  the person wielding it”, explained the London born writer, and furthermore “How do you cope, how do you keep from being consumed; this is the most absolute of powers, how can you possibly keep from being just as absolutely corrupted? and once you fall from grace, even a little, how do you -how can you- atone?”. For Jean Grey, the only possible atonement was the ultimate sacrifice. This sacrifice affects the lives of all the X-Men, especially Scott Summers who decides to take a leave of absence but also young Kitty Pryde, who must step up her game and prove her worthiness as an X-Woman. 

Brent Anderson & Joe Rubinstein

In “Demon” (originally published in The Uncanny X-Men #143, March 1981), Kitty Pryde must go through a very difficult rite of passage. Alone in Xavier’s mansion, she must survive the attack of a deadly N’Garai demon. This issue also marks the final collaboration between Claremont and Byrne, and it’s an example of Byrne’s amazing talent as an artist: “While Chris was able to divulge personality through carefully crafted dialogue, John did so visually by ensuring that none of the characters ever stood, sat, moved or ran like any of the other characters did. Chris and John may have been relative newcomers to the world of professional comics, but they certainly knew their stuff”, affirms Terry Austin (who pencils and inks this issue’s wonderful cover). And that’s true. Back in the day, Byrne had a unique ability to make each character come to life. And in the pages of “Demon”, every panel proves why he was the best artist in the 80s. 

The story begins with a horny couple trying to have some fun in the woods, only to be quickly exterminated by the N’Garai demon, thus setting the mood of a story quite reminiscent of certain horror movies. The first appearance of the demon is shocking enough, and Byrne doesn’t even need a full splash page to prove how lethal this creature can be, the composition of the red moon panel is also superb. In the following pages, Professor X and all the X-Men leave the mansion. Kitty Pryde is home alone, and that is when the demon breaks through all the mansion’s defenses and attacks the young mutant. 

As I have stated before, I have always absolutely loved the classic black and yellow X-Men costumes. The idea of new students wearing the old X-Men costumes is, in part, what gave birth to such captivating concepts as the New Mutants, but it all started with Kitty Pryde. “A young Sigourney Weaver was how the face started to evolve when I started looking for the face. A couple of them started to look that way and I said, ‘Okay, that’s fine. She can grow up to be Sigourney Weaver. That’s a nice image’”, explains Byrne. And, of course, how fitting that her baptism of fire should be a confrontation with an unstoppable killing creature that looks very similar to the alien from Ridley Scott’s Alien film. 

The N'Garai demon

“Even in death…” (originally published in The Uncanny X-Men #143, April 1981) is, in a way, another rite of passage, this time centered on the figure of Cyclops, a man that is still mourning the loss of his beloved Jean Grey. After Byrne’s sudden departure, this issue needed the assistance of guest penciler Brent Anderson and inker Joe Rubinstein (who are also in charge of the cover). This is a rather peculiar issue in which Man-Thing (Marvel’s version of DC’s Swamp Thing) fights against an evil entity called D’Spayre, which is the embodiment of despair. As I explained in one of the first comic books I wrote, titled “The Only Living Substance” (as part of the anthology Dawn of the Undead), in medieval times, despair was simply the word used to express the idea of killing oneself, since the term suicide hadn’t been invented yet.

As a literary connoisseur, Claremont is obviously aware of the multiple meanings of the word despair, and so the beginning of the story depicts the sucide of a man who turns out to be Aleytys ‘Lee’ Forrester’s father. Lee is a brave young woman, captain of the fishing trawler Arcadia, who has employed Scott Summers (AKA Cyclops) in her ship. Investigating the death of her father, Cyclops and Lee run into D’Spayre. Thanks to Man-Thing’s help, Cyclops is able to defeat the evil entity.

Después de Dark Phoenix Saga Dark Phoenix Saga era difícil para la mayoría de los fans imaginar una historia que pudiese ser igual de poderosa e intensa. Y una vez más, Claremont y Byrne demostraron con Days of Future Past por qué eran el mejor equipo creativo de la industria. Han pasado casi 40 años desde que alcanzaron la cúspide creativa, y desde entonces solo ha habido un puñado de etapas igual de significativas e inolvidables (a saber, New X-Men de Morrison y Astonishing X-Men de Whedon y Cassaday).

Professor X, Kitty Pryde & Angel

Para Claremont, la resonancia emocional de la saga Phoenix emana de Jean Gray y de una pregunta fundamental sobre la responsabilidad: “La clave nunca es el poder, ya sea saltar edificios de un sólo salto o remodelar la forma y la estructura de la causalidad tangible, sino la persona blandiéndolo”, explicó el escritor nacido en Londres, y además, “¿Cómo te las arreglas? ¿Cómo evitas ser consumido?, este es el más absoluto de los poderes, ¿cómo puedes evitar ser tan absolutamente corrompido? y una vez que caes en desgracia, aunque sea un poco, ¿cómo puedes -como podría cualquiera- encontrar la expiación?”. Para Jean Gray, la única expiación posible fue el sacrificio máximo. Este sacrificio afecta la vida de todos los X-Men, especialmente Scott Summers, que decide ausentarse temporalmente, pero también la joven Kitty Pryde, que debe pasar una prueba de fuego y demostrar su valía como X-Woman.

En “Demonio” (originalmente publicado en The Uncanny X-Men # 143, marzo de 1981), Kitty Pryde debe enfrentar un difícil rito de paso. Sola en la mansión de Xavier, debe sobrevivir al ataque de un mortal demonio N'Garai. Este ejemplar también marca la colaboración final entre Claremont y Byrne, y es un ejemplo del increíble talento de Byrne como artista: “Mientras que Chris era capaz de divulgar la personalidad a través de un diálogo cuidadosamente elaborado, John lo hizo visualmente al asegurarse que ninguno de los personajes estuviera de pie, se sentara, se moviera o corriera como lo hacían los otros personajes. Chris y John pueden haber sido relativamente recién llegados al mundo de los cómics profesionales, pero sin duda sabían muy bien lo que estaban haciendo”, afirma Terry Austin (quien dibuja a lápiz y entinta la maravillosa portada de este número). Y eso es verdad. En el pasado, Byrne tenía la capacidad única de hacer que cada personaje cobrara vida. Y en las páginas de “Demon”, cada viñeta es una prueba de por qué fue el mejor artista de los 80s.

La historia comienza con una pareja cachonda que trata de divertirse un poco en el bosque, y son rápidamente exterminados por el demonio N'Garai, configurando así el ambiente de una historia que recuerda bastante a ciertas películas de terror. La primera aparición del demonio es impactante, y Byrne ni siquiera necesita una página completa para demostrar cuán letal puede ser esta criatura, la composición de la viñeta con la luna roja también es excelente. En las siguientes páginas, el Profesor X y todos los X-Men abandonan la mansión. Kitty Pryde está solo en casa, y es entonces cuando el demonio desbarata todas las defensas de la mansión y ataca a la joven mutante.

Como dije antes, siempre me han encantado los clásicos trajes negros y amarillos de los X-Men. La idea de que los nuevos estudiantes usen los antiguos trajes de los X-Men es, en parte, lo que dio origen a conceptos tan cautivadores como los Nuevos mutantes, pero todo comenzó con Kitty Pryde. “Una joven Sigourney Weaver fue la manera en la que su cara comenzó a evolucionar cuando comencé a dibujarla. Más de una ilustración comenzá a verse de esa manera y dije, 'OK, está bien. Ella puede crecer y ser Sigourney Weaver. Esa es una buena imagen'”, explica Byrne. Y, por supuesto, qué apropiado es que su bautismo de fuego sea una confrontación con una criatura asesina imparable que se parece mucho al alienígena de la película Alien de Ridley Scott.

D'Spayre & Man-Thing

“Incluso en la muerte ...” (publicado originalmente en The Uncanny X-Men # 143, abril de 1981) es, en cierto modo, otro rito de paso, esta vez centrado en la figura de Cíclope, un hombre que todavía está de luto por la pérdida de su amada Jean Gray. Después de la partida repentina de Byrne, este número necesitó la ayuda del dibujante invitado Brent Anderson y el entintador Joe Rubinstein (quienes también están a cargo de la portada). Este es un ejemplar bastante peculiar en el que Man-Thing (la versión de Marvel de Swamp Thing de DC) lucha contra una entidad maligna llamada D'Spayre, que es la encarnación de la desesperación. Como expliqué en uno de los primeros cómics que escribí, titulado "La única sustancia viviente" (como parte de la antología Dawn of the Undead), en la época medieval, la desesperación era simplemente la palabra utilizada para expresar el concepto de suicidio, ya que el término suicidio aún no se había inventado.

Como buen conocedor literario, Claremont es obviamente consciente de los múltiples significados de la palabra desesperación, por lo que el comienzo de la historia muestra el suicidio de un hombre que resultó ser el padre de Aleytys 'Lee' Forrester. Lee es una joven valiente, capitana del buque pesquero Arcadia, que ha empleado a Scott Summers (también conocido como Cyclops) en su barco. Al investigar la muerte de su padre, Cyclops y Lee se topan con D'Spayre. Gracias a la ayuda de Man-Thing, Cyclops puede vencer a la entidad malvada.
