Newuniversal - Warren Ellis & Salvador Larroca

I remember that the first time I heard about the New Universe, John Byrne was making a parody of it in the pages of a Superman comic. I had no idea about the New Universe but thanks to the guys in the letters column I found out about it. A few years later, looking for comic books in the historic center of Lima, I found some old Spanish editions with most of the New Universe line. I bought all of them and read them quickly. These were good comics with competent writers and pencilers. 

The concept of the New Universe was quite simple: “What if superheroes lived in the universe outside your window?”. The main premise was that superheroes existed in your / our world and, of course, there were no X-Men, Spider-Man or Avengers. A couple of decades after the cancellation of the New Universe, Marvel editors decided to celebrate the anniversary and recruited Warren Ellis and Salvador Larroca. This new creative team would revamp a concept that was unique in the '80s but not so much in the 21st century. So they created a different reality this was never meant to be the world outside your window. 

From the opening sequence of the Newuniversal we realize that this is an alternative timeline. Perhaps slightly better than our own reality, but still problematic. In this reality 9/11 never happened, the year is 2007, and the World Trade Center remains intact; now this might seem as an extremely optimistic approach but this isn't a perfect world, is just one that is slightly different to ours. John Lennon is still alive and well, and celebrating his birthday with new songs, but at the same time mourning the loss of his friend and collaborator Paul McCartney who was killed in the '80s. Famous people have been killed but they are not the same ones that we are familiar with.

Instead of having one protagonist, the story is told in a polyphonic way. All the characters that existed in the New Universe are present in Newuniversal. After the White Event, random people get unique superpowers. A girl lives in nightmares and encounters a spaceship bigger than anything that could be created in our planet, she’ll become Nightmask. Justice is a man in a comma, suddenly resurrected, now he can mentally see all the crimes that people around him are committing and so he quickly executes and brutally murders his nurse who was guilty of killing patients, not because of euthanasia but because he’s a serial killer, much like the Angel of Death from New Jersey.

Then we have a group of archaeologists who have discovered the remains of an old city and specially the skeleton of a warrior who has a unique star brand on the skull. Then we see Kenneth, a young man in a small and ordinary town, who after waking up realizes that his girlfriend, who was sleeping next to him, is now completely carbonized and there is a huge star brand all around them. Kenneth is arrested under the suspicion that he has killed the girl; however, as Kenneth starts to discover his incredible powers he quickly destroys, mutilates and kills every police officer in the station and escapes. Something the original Starbrand would’ve never done intentionally. Meanwhile Justice continuous to kill everyone who has been guilty of a crime and thanks to his powers he is unstoppable. 

"This is a paradigm shift" / "Este es un cambio de paradigma"

One of the most interesting moments for me was the expedition of the group of archaeologists, as they understand the meaning of their discovery: there is a an old city which was called the city of lights and they are now beginning to understand that there was no fantasy or exaggeration in that name. The city had highly advanced technology, including artificial lights and many other wonders that were impossible a thousand year ago. In the same way as in the old 80s comics, when Kenneth becomes Starbrand, he must face against an older and more powerful Starbrand, just like the previous bearers of the star brand. Like in the old comic book he cannot tell if they are looking out for him or if they are possible rivals. At the same time there is a government agency created to keep under control the possible appearance of super powered individuals. There is a woman capable of using a cutting-edge robotic armor, but is she ready to face men and women with unpredictable powers?

Justice

I feel like this was going to be a very complex story. All the setup is there, all the characters, all the mystery. These first 6 issues are a wonderful introduction into this universe, which is far more fascinating than the one from the 80s. However, Ellis unfortunately didn't have the time or the support from Marvel to finish telling this story, which is quite a shame. The artist, Salvador Larroca, had already transitioned from his more cartoonish style from '90s to a hyper-realistic approach, which he will continue to improve, until a year later when he started working on Iron Man, providing very realistic illustrations for the classic superhero. 

Archeologists / arqueólogos

Salvador Larroca has produced spectacular comics in the past, and the Newuniversal is only a mere example of that amazing talent. The Spanish artist is also in charge of the covers, a wonderful work of design that has particular elements that play with each other. There is always a main graphic motive and then everything else revolves around it, and then there are other elements that complement that main aspect. Of course, with such a wonderful brilliant creative team, it is just sad that we will never get to see the rest of the story.

Recuerdo que la primera vez que escuché sobre el Nuevo Universo fue cuando John Byrne estaba haciendo una parodia del mismo en las páginas de un cómic de Superman. No tenía ni idea sobre el Nuevo Universo pero gracias a los fans de la sección de cartas me enteré. Unos años después, buscando historietas en el centro histórico de Lima, encontré algunas ediciones antiguas en español con la mayor parte de la línea del Nuevo Universo. Los compré todos y los leí rápidamente. Estos eran buenos cómics con escritores y dibujantes competentes.

Starbrand

El concepto del Nuevo Universo era bastante simple: "¿Y si los superhéroes vivieran en el universo fuera de tu ventana?". La premisa principal era que los superhéroes existían en tu/nuestro mundo y, por supuesto, no existían los X-Men, Spider-Man o Avengers. Un par de décadas después de la cancelación del Nuevo Universo, los editores de Marvel decidieron celebrar el aniversario y reclutaron a Warren Ellis y Salvador Larroca. Este nuevo equipo creativo renovaría un concepto que fue único en los 80s pero que quizá ya no lo sería en el siglo XXI. Así que ellos crearon una realidad diferente, que no tenía la intención de ser el mundo fuera de tu ventana.

Kenneth

Desde la secuencia de apertura de Newuniversal nos damos cuenta de que esta es una línea de tiempo alternativa. Quizás un poco mejor que nuestra propia realidad, pero igualmente problemática. En esta realidad el 11 de setiembre nunca sucedió, el año es 2007, y el World Trade Center permanece intacto; ahora bien, esto puede parecer un enfoque extremadamente optimista, pero este no es un mundo perfecto, es  uno ligeramente diferente al nuestro. John Lennon sigue vivo y coleando, y celebra su cumpleaños con nuevas canciones, pero al mismo tiempo agraviado por la pérdida de su amigo y colaborador Paul McCartney, quien fue asesinado en los 80s. Han asesinado a personajes famosos, pero no son los mismos que conocemos.

Kenneth = Starbrand

En lugar de tener un protagonista, la historia se cuenta de forma polifónica. Todos los personajes que existieron en el Nuevo Universo están presentes en Newuniversal. Después del Evento Blanco, personas aleatorias obtienen superpoderes únicos. Una muchacha vive en pesadillas y se encuentra con una nave espacial más grande que cualquier cosa que pueda crearse en nuestro planeta, ella se convertirá en Nightmask. Justice es un hombre en coma, resucitado de repente, ahora puede ver mentalmente todos los crímenes que están cometiendo las personas a su alrededor y rápidamente ejecuta y asesina brutalmente a su enfermero que era culpable de matar pacientes, no mediante eutanasia sino porque ese sujeto era un asesino en serie, muy parecido al Ángel de la Muerte de New Jersey.

Justice

Luego tenemos un grupo de arqueólogos que han descubierto los restos de una ciudad antigua y especialmente el esqueleto de un guerrero que tiene una marca estelar única en el cráneo. Luego vemos a Kenneth, un joven de un pueblo pequeño y corriente, que al despertarse se da cuenta de que su novia, que dormía a su lado, ahora está completamente carbonizada y hay una enorme marca estelar a su alrededor. Kenneth es arrestado bajo la sospecha de que ha matado a la joven; sin embargo, cuando Kenneth comienza a descubrir sus increíbles poderes, rápidamente destruye, mutila y mata a todos los oficiales en la estación de policía y escapa. Algo que el Starbrand original nunca habría hecho intencionalmente. Mientras tanto, Justice continúa matando a todos los que han sido culpables de un crimen y gracias a sus poderes es imparable.

Justice

Uno de los momentos más interesantes para mí fue la expedición del grupo de arqueólogos, ya que entienden el significado de su descubrimiento: hay una ciudad antigua a la que llamaban la ciudad de las luces y ahora empiezan a entender que no hubo fantasía o exageración en ese nombre. La ciudad contaba con tecnología muy avanzada, incluyendo luces artificiales y muchas otras maravillas que eran imposibles hace mil años. De la misma manera que en los viejos cómics de los 80s, cuando Kenneth se convierte en Starbrand, debe enfrentarse a un Starbrand más viejo y poderoso, como lo hicieron los anteriores portadores de la marca estelar. Como en el viejo cómic, no se puede saber si lo están cuidando o si son posibles rivales. Al mismo tiempo, se crea una agencia gubernamental para mantener bajo control la posible aparición de individuos con superpoderes. Existe una mujer capaz de usar una armadura robótica de última generación, pero ¿está lista para enfrentarse a hombres y mujeres con poderes impredecibles?

Ancient city of lights / la antigua ciudad de las luces

Claramente esta iba a ser una historia muy compleja. La configuración dramática está ahí, todos los personajes, todo el misterio. Estos primeros 6 números son una maravillosa introducción a este universo, mucho más fascinante que el de los 80s. Sin embargo, Ellis desafortunadamente no tuvo el tiempo ni el apoyo de Marvel para terminar de contar esta historia, lo cual es una lástima. El artista Salvador Larroca ya había pasado de su estilo más caricaturesco de los 90s a un enfoque hiperrealista, que seguirá mejorando, hasta que un año después empezará a trabajar en Iron Man, aportando ilustraciones muy realistas para el clásico superhéroe.

"to be continued..." (no sequel after 16 years) / "continuará" (sin secuelas 16 años después)

Salvador Larroca ha producido cómics espectaculares en el pasado, y Newuniversal es tan sólo un ejemplo de ese asombroso talento. El artista español también está a cargo de las portadas, un maravilloso trabajo de diseño que tiene elementos particulares que juegan entre sí. Siempre hay un motivo gráfico principal y luego todo lo demás gira en torno a él, y luego hay otros elementos que complementan ese aspecto principal. Por supuesto, con un equipo creativo brillante y maravilloso, es triste que nunca podamos ver el resto de la historia.

Captain America Tribute - Joe Simon, Stan Lee et al

In 1941, a small publisher by the name of Timely Comics, released the adventures of a certain star-spangled hero that served both as an American propaganda outside the US but also as an example of patriotism in the convulsive times of World War II. Captain America was created to fight the Nazis and to defeat Hitler, and he was born when America and the world needed him the most. 80 years have passed since the creation of this character and although much has been said about his recent exploits, people tend to forget the original stories from the 40s.

Steve McNiven

Perhaps as a way to remind readers of stories of yesteryear, or perhaps simply as an anniversary homage, Marvel Comics decided to adapt those first stories in a very interesting way, by having the best industry artists drawing different pages while preserving the original dialogs by Joe Simon and Stan Lee. The result is a beautiful comic book in which every page is a glorious example of the creativity and talent of today’s comic book artists. True, some people might miss the original Jack Kirby pages, but hey, those have been reprinted on multiple occasions and can be easily found online and in print. 

John Cassaday

The cover of the issue is based on Jack Kirby’s iconic Avengers # 4 (March 1964), that marks the reintroduction of Captain America in the modern Marvel Universe, after decades of hibernation. Artist Steve McNiven maintains Kirby’s composition, adding important details to the background as well as expression lines in the faces of Marvel’s most famous superheroes. This comic, however, doesn’t start with the Avengers adventure but rather with the original comic book (March 1941) and the splash page is wonderfully illustrated by John Cassaday, an artist who’s been involved with Captain America, in one way or another, for over 20 years now.

Salvador Larroca

In subsequent pages of the origin issue we have people like Salvador Larroca and Paul Renaud (by the way, the dialogue in this page is hilarious: just see the second panel when Captain America gets angry at Bucky and says “I ought to tan your hide!”, nowadays people would be screaming and accusing the hero of being abusive, or too violent with children or who knows what, but in 1940, this was perfectly normal. In the next story we see the first appearance of Red Skull, and here Inhyuk Lee’s page  is very impressive. 

Then we have the actual Avengers comic, which is not only the longest but also the only one connected to the Marvel Universe, and so here in the splash page, beautifully illustrated by Jim Cheung we see Earth’s mightiest heroes. Alex Ross ads hyperrealism to the first encounter of the Sentinel of Liberty and the Avengers. Finally the page by Ray-Anthony Height is so vivid and colorful, and so full of energic.

En 1941, una pequeña editorial con el nombre de Timely Comics, publicó las aventuras de cierto héroe de rayas y estrellas que sirvió como propaganda estadounidense fuera de los Estados Unidos pero también como ejemplo de patriotismo en los convulsos tiempos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. El Capitán América fue creado para luchar contra los nazis y derrotar a Hitler, y nació cuando Estados Unidos y el mundo más lo necesitaban. Han pasado 80 años desde la creación de este personaje y aunque se ha hablado mucho de sus hazañas recientes, la gente tiende a olvidar las historias originales de los 40s.

Inhyuk Lee

Quizás como una forma de recordar a los lectores historias de antaño, o quizás simplemente como un homenaje de aniversario, Marvel Comics decidió adaptar esas primeras historias de una manera muy interesante, pidiéndoles a los mejores artistas de la industria que dibujaran diferentes páginas conservando los diálogos originales de Joe Simon y Stan Lee. El resultado es un hermoso cómic en el que cada página es un ejemplo glorioso de la creatividad y el talento de los artistas del cómic de hoy. Es cierto que algunas personas pueden echar de menos las páginas originales de Jack Kirby, pero bueno, se han reeditado en múltiples ocasiones y se pueden encontrar fácilmente en línea e impresas.

Jim Cheung

La portada del número se basa en el icónico Avengers # 4 (marzo 1964) de Jack Kirby, que marca la reintroducción del Capitán América en el Universo Marvel moderno, después de décadas de hibernación. El artista Steve McNiven mantiene la composición de Kirby, agregando detalles importantes al fondo, así como líneas de expresión en los rostros de los superhéroes más famosos de Marvel. En la siguiente historia vemos la primera aparición de Red Skull, y aquí la página de Inhyuk Lee es muy impresionante.

Luego tenemos el cómic de los Vengadores, que no sólo es el más largo sino también el único conectado al Universo Marvel, y aquí en la página de inicio, bellamente ilustrada por Jim Cheung, vemos a los héroes más poderosos de la Tierra. Alex Ross agrega hiperrealismo al primer encuentro entre el Centinela de la Libertad y los Vengadores. Finalmente, la página de Ray-Anthony Height es tan vívida y colorida, y tan llena de energía.

Doctor Doom # 1 - Christopher Cantwell & Salvador Larroca

The Fantastic Four are Marvel’s premier superhero family, but also the cornerstone of the Marvel Universe. They were the protagonists of the first superhero comic ever written by Stan Lee. It is often said that the true measure of heroes is their enemies. And so the best superheroes must have the best supervillains. It doesn’t come as a surprise, then, that the most important group of superheroes should have the most unique and impressive supervillain: Doctor Doom!

Aco

Victor Von Doom, the ruler of Latveria, has always been a fascinating character. Writers love to use him in their stories and fans can’t get enough of him. However, this overexposure means that Doom has been handled, or should we say manhandled, by people who were not up to the task. For instance, John Byrne disapproved so much of the use of Doctor Doom by certain writers that he erased from existence those stories attributing the out of character exploits of Doom to a robotic replica. Likewise, in a highly unpopular adventure written by Brian Michael Bendis over 15 years ago, we see Doom speaking like a vulgar thug. Eric Smearman explains that “One of the reasons why I, a fan of Bendis' creator-owned stuff, dislike his mainstream Marvel work is that he doesn't really get most of the characters' ‘voices’. That scene with Doom is a prime example”.

Indeed, although Doom is a complex and captivating character, the kind of honorable enemy that only Kirby creations like Darkseid could rival, he has been poorly portrayed even in recent times. But everything changed last year, thanks to Christopher Cantwell. Few writers since the Byrne era (around 30 years ago), have been able to capture so perfectly the voice of Doom. But Cantwell not only reminds us why Doom is to be feared and respected, he also shows us his human side, his hopes and dreams, and his fears. 

Latveria

In “Pottersville” (originally published in Doctor Doom # 1, December 2019) we get to see Doom’s normal routine as the ruler of Latveria, but also his constant confrontation with media and journalists. When Doctor Doom, one of the smartest men in the world, criticizes the Antlion, a new lunar base designed by Reed Richards and Tony Stark, nobody seems to pay attention to him. He announces a catastrophe, and yet the catastrophe doesn’t take place. Although he never admits it in public, in private Doom is questioning his abilities: “Truthfully, my foresight weakens with each passing year. For the world is lost”.

At the same time, Doom starts having visions of an alternative future, a future in which he has married an intelligent and beautiful woman, a future in which he has children and is admired as the savior of humanity. This reignites the hope in him that maybe the world is not lost after all. But before he has time to decide what to do, a terrorist attack destroys the Antlion, and the attack seems to have come from Latveria. Doom is powerful and ruthless but he is also a man of honor. He knows he gave no orders for such an attack, but in order for the investigation to proceed smoothly he decides to surrender. For a man as proud and arrogant as Doom, surrendering is the ultimate sacrifice. But that is the sacrifice that will trigger a unique journey.

Doomstadt

Salvador Larroca is the artist in charge of this 30 page special first issue. Over a decade ago Larroca had refined his style considerably, combining a unique comic book sensibility with a level of realism that elevated titles such as The Invincible Iron Man. As surprising as it might seem, his art is just as amazing as it was before, if not more. Clean lines, graceful movements, subtle expressions and an attention to detail turn this comic into an authentic visual feast. And Aco’s cover is as iconic as it is powerful.

Los Cuatro Fantásticos son la principal familia de superhéroes de Marvel, pero también la piedra angular del Universo Marvel. Fueron los protagonistas del primer cómic de superhéroes escrito por Stan Lee. A menudo se dice que la verdadera medida de los héroes son sus enemigos. Y así, los mejores superhéroes deben tener los mejores supervillanos. No es de extrañar, entonces, que el grupo más importante de superhéroes tenga al supervillano más singular e impresionante: ¡Doctor Doom!

Victor Von Doom

Victor Von Doom, el gobernante de Latveria, siempre ha sido un personaje fascinante. A los escritores les encanta usarlo en sus historias y los fans siempre demandan más de él. Sin embargo, esta sobreexposición significa que Doom ha sido tratado, o deberíamos decir maltratado, por personas que no estaban a la altura de las circunstancias. Por ejemplo, John Byrne desaprobó tanto el uso de Doctor Doom por parte de ciertos escritores que borró de la existencia esas historias atribuyendo estas impopulares hazañas de Doom a una réplica robótica. Asimismo, en una aventura de muy mala fama escrita por Brian Michael Bendis hace más de 15 años, vemos a Doom hablando como un matón vulgar. Eric Smearman explica que “Una de las razones por las que a mí, un fan de las creaciones que pertenecen a Bendis, no me gusta su trabajo convencional en Marvel es que realmente no capta la mayoría de las 'voces' de los personajes. Esa escena con Doom es un buen ejemplo”.

De hecho, aunque Doom es un personaje complejo y cautivador, el tipo de enemigo honorable con el que sólo las creaciones de Kirby como Darkseid podrían rivalizar, ha sido mal retratado incluso en años recientes. Pero todo cambió el año pasado gracias a Christopher Cantwell. Pocos escritores desde la era Byrne (hace unos 30 años), han podido capturar tan perfectamente la voz de Doom. Pero Cantwell no sólo nos recuerda por qué Doom debe ser temido y respetado, también nos muestra su lado humano, sus esperanzas y sueños, y sus miedos.

Antlion

En "Pottersville" (publicado originalmente en Doctor Doom # 1, diciembre de 2019) vemos la rutina normal de Doom como gobernante de Latveria, pero también su constante confrontación con los medios y los periodistas. Cuando el Doctor Doom, uno de los hombres más inteligentes del mundo, critica al Antlion, una nueva base lunar diseñada por Reed Richards y Tony Stark, nadie parece prestarle atención. Anuncia una catástrofe y, sin embargo, la catástrofe no se produce. Aunque nunca lo admite en público, en privado Doom está cuestionando sus habilidades: “Sinceramente, mi clarividencia se debilita con cada año que pasa. Puesto que el mundo está perdido”.

Al mismo tiempo, Doom comienza a tener visiones de un futuro alternativo, un futuro en el que se ha casado con una mujer inteligente y hermosa, un futuro en el que tiene hijos y es admirado como el salvador de la humanidad. Esto reaviva la esperanza en él de que quizás el mundo no esté perdido después de todo. Pero antes de que tenga tiempo de decidir qué hacer, un ataque terrorista destruye el Antlion, y el ataque parece provenir de Latveria. Doom es poderoso y despiadado, pero también es un hombre de honor. Sabe que no dio órdenes para tal ataque, pero para que la investigación se desarrolle sin problemas, decide rendirse. Para un hombre tan orgulloso y arrogante como Doom, rendirse es el máximo sacrificio. Pero ese es el sacrificio que desencadenará una travesía única.

Doctor Doom versus Union Jack

Salvador Larroca es el artista español a cargo de este primer número especial de 30 páginas. Hace más de una década, Larroca había refinado su estilo considerablemente, combinando una sensibilidad de cómic única con un nivel de realismo que elevó títulos como The Invincible Iron Man. Por sorprendente que parezca, su arte es tan asombroso como lo era antes, si no más. Las líneas limpias, los movimientos elegantes, las expresiones sutiles y la atención al detalle convierten a este cómic en un auténtico festín visual. Y la portada de Aco es tan icónica como poderosa.

September comic books / cómics de setiembre

September has been a very good month for me. I’m so excited to read Steranko’s SHIELD and the Best of Milligan and McCarthy (I took a quick look and they look absolutely awesome). I enjoyed X-Men Battle of the Atom and Young Avengers. I was sad to see Peter David’s X-Factor coming to an end, for almost a decade Peter David did his best to turn this title into something extraordinary, and he was successful. X-Factor has been consistently good since the first issues and although many readers think that the level of quality somehow got diminished since 2010 I still think this was one of Marvel’s most solid ongoing titles. Matt Kindt wrote a very exciting first issue with Infinity Hunt, and another great first issue was Avengers, Hickman and Opeña are a great creative team, I wish I had bought this a year ago, when it was originally released. Sidekick and Kick-Ass continue to be top notch, and the Unwritten graphic novel was wonderful. And now, without further ado, here are September comics as per solicitations.

Setiembre ha sido un buen mes para mí. Estoy emocionado por leer SHIELD de Steranko y lo mejor de Milligan y McCarthy (dando un simple vistazo puedo decir que se ven estupendos). Disfruté con X-Men Battle of the Atom y Young Avengers. Fue triste ver que X-Factor de Peter David llegara a su fin, por casi una década, Peter David hizo lo posible para convertir este título en algo extraordinario, y tuvo éxito. X-Factor ha sido consistentemente bueno desde los primeros números y aunque muchos fans piensan que el nivel de calidad disminuyó desde el 2010, igual creo que este era uno de los títulos más sólidos de Marvel. Matt Kindt escribió un gran primer número con Infinity Hunt, y otro muy buen primer número fue Avengers, Hickman y Opeña son un grandioso equipo creativo, desearía haber comprado esto hace un año, cuando fue publicado originalmente. Sidekick y Kick-Ass continúan siendo de primer nivel, y la novela gráfica de Unwritten fue maravillosa. Y ahora, sin más preámbulos, aquí están los cómics de setiembre.
