Marvel # 6 - Ross, Darnall, Bermejo et al

It has taken me almost 2 years to finish reviewing the 6-issue miniseries aptly titled Marvel. Following an anthological format rarely seen these days in the Big Two, Marvel turned out to be a magnificent confluence of outstanding creators. Of course, to provide cohesiveness to the project, Alex Ross was in charge of all the covers plus the main story, the only one that continues from one issue to the next. In the 6th and last chapter, Alex Ross comes up with a striking cover that reunites the most important Marvel characters from the early 60s, and unlike other colorful covers, these one has only two tones that go really well together, a primary yellow and a green hue.

As usual, the “Overture” is the work of Alex Ross and Steve Darnall; once again, the cosmic confrontation between Doctor Strange and Nightmare is reaching its final stages. Now it’s time to either give up or muster the necessary strength to defeat Nightmare. In the conclusion of the story, we see many Marvel superheroes on the page, although this time instead of the magnificent and photorealistic art from Ross, what we see is the more cartoonish and simple lines of Mitch O’Connell.

The next story is “The One-Eyed Gambit”, written, illustrated and colored by Greg Smallwood. Here we get to see Nick Fury fighting against Advanced Idea Mechanics (A.I.M.) and most specifically against MODOK (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing). I really enjoyed the combination of pop art sensibility with 60s nostalgia in this charming story that rescues the most essential aspect of Nick Fury, id est, his super spy facet. There are of course some clever references to James Bond, including casinos, high stakes gambling and deformed villains, it all works together marvelously.

 

I have to say that before last year I simply had no idea who Greg Smallwood was, but I certainly enjoyed this short story and recently I have been very pleased with his artistic contributions to Tom King’s The Human Target (which I should be reviewing soon). Evidently, Smallwood has a unique style and he’s not afraid of delving into nostalgia or previous decades to find visually appealing aesthetics. Also, the fact that he pencils, inks and colors all of his works is admirable.

And at last but not least we have a very special story written and fully illustrated by Lee Bermejo. “The Silver Glint of Space” is also the only black and white story in the anthology, but Bermejo’s art is so detailed and visually striking, that color actually isn’t needed. In recent years Bermejo has become one of my favorite artists, and that is the reason why I’ve been buying as many of his comics as possible, even if sometimes I don’t like the writers he’s teamed up with.

“The Silver Glint of Space” is a post-apocalyptic story in which our planet is in ruins and the only living man is Johnny Storm, the Human Torch. He’s the only one present and it’s his duty to talk to the Silver Surfer, the herald of Galactus. It’s a bitter conversation but quite a revealing one. Bermejo proves to be not only an amazing artist but also a very competent writer. John Byrne was the first author to ever write a post-apocalyptic story in the X-Men with “Days of Future Past” and in Fantastic Four with “The Last Galactus Story”, in which Galactus’ herald visits a devastated Earth. In “The Silver Glint of Space” Galactus’ herald finds our world destroyed but at least he’s able to have a meaningful conversation with Johnny Storm. I wish we could see more projects like this, Marvel certainly was a marvelous anthology!

Me he demorado casi 2 años en terminar de reseñar la miniserie de 6 números acertadamente titulada Marvel. Siguiendo un formato antológico pocas veces visto estos días en las grandes editoriales, Marvel resultó ser una magnífica confluencia de destacados creadores. Por supuesto, para darle cohesión al proyecto, Alex Ross estuvo a cargo de todas las portadas más la historia principal, la única que continúa de un número a otro. En el sexto y último capítulo, Alex Ross presenta una llamativa portada que reúne a los personajes más importantes de Marvel de principios de los 60s, y a diferencia de otras coloridas portadas, esta tiene solo dos tonos que combinan muy bien, un amarillo primario y un tono verde

Como es habitual, la “Obertura” es obra de Alex Ross y Steve Darnall; una vez más, la confrontación cósmica entre Doctor Strange y Nightmare está llegando a sus etapas finales. Ahora es el momento de rendirse o reunir la fuerza necesaria para derrotar a Nightmare. En la conclusión de la historia, vemos muchos superhéroes de Marvel en la página, aunque esta vez en lugar del magnífico y fotorrealista arte de Ross, lo que vemos son las líneas más caricaturescas y simplonas de Mitch O'Connell.

La siguiente historia es “El gambito tuerto”, escrita, ilustrada y coloreada por Greg Smallwood. Aquí podemos ver a Nick Fury luchando contra Mecánica de Ideas Avanzadas (o A.I.M. por sus siglas en inglés) y más específicamente contra MODOK (Organismo Mental Diseñado Sólo para Matar por sus siglas en inglés). Disfruté mucho la combinación de la sensibilidad del arte pop con la nostalgia de los 60s en esta encantadora historia que rescata lo más esencial de Nick Fury, es decir, su faceta de súper espía. Por supuesto, hay algunas referencias ingeniosas a James Bond, incluidos los casinos, los juegos de azar de alto riesgo y los villanos deformes, todo funciona en conjunto maravillosamente.

Debo decir que antes del año pasado simplemente no tenía idea de quién era Greg Smallwood, pero ciertamente disfruté de esta historia corta y recientemente estoy muy complacido con sus contribuciones artísticas a The Human Target de Tom King (que debería reseñar pronto) . Evidentemente, Smallwood tiene un estilo único y no teme adentrarse en la nostalgia o en décadas anteriores para encontrar una estética visualmente atractiva. Además, el hecho de que dibuja, entinta y colorea todos sus trabajos es admirable.

Y por último, pero no menos importante, tenemos una historia muy especial escrita y totalmente ilustrada por Lee Bermejo. “El destello de plata del espacio” también es la única historia en blanco y negro de la antología, pero el arte de Bermejo es tan detallado y visualmente impactante que el color en realidad no es necesario. En los últimos años Bermejo se ha convertido en uno de mis artistas favoritos, y esa es la razón por la que he estado comprando la mayor cantidad posible de sus cómics, aunque a veces no me gustan los escritores con los que se asocia.

 

“El destello de plata del espacio” es una historia post-apocalíptica en la que nuestro planeta está en ruinas y el único hombre vivo es Johnny Storm, la Antorcha Humana. Él es el único presente y es su deber hablar con Silver Surfer, el heraldo de Galactus. Es una conversación amarga pero bastante reveladora. Bermejo demuestra ser no sólo un artista asomobroso sino también un escritor muy competente. John Byrne fue el primer autor en escribir una historia post-apocalíptica en los X-Men con “Días del futuro pasado” y en Fantastic Four con "The Last Galactus Story", en la que el heraldo de Galactus visita una Tierra devastada. En “El destello de plata del espacio”, el heraldo de Galactus encuentra nuestro mundo destruido, pero al menos puede tener una conversación significativa con Johnny Storm. Ojalá pudiéramos ver más proyectos como este, ¡Marvel ciertamente fue una antología maravillosa!

Marvel # 4 - Ross, Abbinanti, Acuña, Barta et al

In previous issues of Marvel, the first and last page serve not only as a nice framing sequence but also as the one continuing story that unfolds from one chapter to the next, as opposed to all the other standalone adventures by different creative teams. Once again, Alex Ross and Steve Darnall shows us how Nightmare has been able to vanquish even the all-mighty Celestials.

The next step for Nightmare is attempting to subdue such powerful cosmic entities like the Living Tribunal. These pages have magnificent art by Alex Ross, who is also in charge of a striking cover that pays homage to the 90s by showcasing some of the most popular characters that became famous in that decade (Shatterstar, Deadpool, Cable, etc.).

In “Sons of Deviant Worlds”, Daniel Acuña writes and illustrates a curious tale that takes place in a postapocalyptic future. Here the Deviants (the rivals of the Eternals) have conquered Earth and enslaved humans. In this context, the appearance of Silver Surfer might be seen as a sign of hope or doom. In the classic introduction of Galactus, the Fantastic Four are responsible for humanizing Silver Surfer who becomes an ally and eventually helps mankind. But in this alternative future we can expect Silver Surfer to fulfill his role as the herald of Galactus and thus bring about the destruction of the entire planet.

“Where Monsters Smell” by Hillary Barta and Doug Rice is a hilarious take on the old monster comics that Marvel used to publish before entering into the business of superheroes. In that aspect, this story is completely faithful to the spirit of the original Marvel Comics anthology from the 40s, the same one that inspired this anniversary celebration. I laughed out loud at the interactions between these monsters, but also the clever jokes in reference to the Comics Code Authority. As a curiosity, even Groot is here (but the original version from the 50s who was very different from the Groot that joins the ranks of the Guardians of the Galaxy decades later).

Finally, my favorite story is “I Am a Revoltin’ Development”, written by Alex Ross and penciled, inked and colored by Sal Abbinanti, a artist I wasn’t familiar with but whose rather experimental approach brings a unique narrative strength to an already fascinating script. Here Ben Grimm shares a story about his past, his fears and challenges as a kid. 

I particularly enjoyed the way past and present are intermingled, and so when Ben Grimm talks about school fights what we see is his present, as the Thing. Introspective and moving in its own right, the revolting development turns out to be a blessing in disguise. But of course, with a character like the Thing, there will be constant questions about the normal life left behind.

En números anteriores de Marvel, la primera y la última página sirven no sólo como una buena secuencia de encuadre, sino también como la historia continuada que se desarrolla de un capítulo al siguiente, a diferencia de todas las demás aventuras independientes de diferentes equipos creativos. Una vez más, Alex Ross y Steve Darnall nos muestran cómo Nightmare ha podido vencer incluso a los todopoderosos Celestiales.

El siguiente paso de Nightmare es intentar someter a entidades cósmicas tan poderosas como el Tribunal Viviente. Estas páginas cuentan con el magnífico arte de Alex Ross, quien también está a cargo de una llamativa portada que rinde homenaje a los 90s, al mostrar algunos de los personajes más populares que se hicieron famosos en esa década (Shatterstar, Deadpool, Cable, etc.).

En “Hijos de los mundos desviados”, Daniel Acuña escribe e ilustra un relato curioso que se desarrolla en un futuro postapocalíptico. Aquí los Deviants (los rivales de los Eternos) han conquistado la Tierra y esclavizado a los humanos. En este contexto, la aparición de Silver Surfer podría verse como un signo de esperanza o perdición. En la clásica introducción de Galactus, los Cuatro Fantásticos son los responsables de humanizar a Silver Surfer, quien se convierte en un aliado y eventualmente ayuda a la humanidad. Pero en este futuro alternativo podemos esperar que Silver Surfer cumpla su papel de heraldo de Galactus y así provoque la destrucción de todo el planeta.

“Donde los monstruos huelen” de Hillary Barta y Doug Rice es una divertida versión de los viejos cómics de monstruos que Marvel solía publicar antes de entrar en el negocio de los superhéroes. En ese aspecto, esta historia es completamente fiel al espíritu de la antología original de Marvel Comics de los 40s, la misma que inspiró esta celebración de aniversario. Me reí a carcajadas con las interacciones entre estos monstruos, pero también de los chistes ingeniosos en referencia a la Autoridad del Código de los Cómics. Como curiosidad, incluso Groot está aquí (pero la versión original de los 50s, que era muy diferente al Groot que se une a las filas de los Guardianes de la Galaxia décadas después).

Finalmente, mi historia favorita es "Soy un suceso repugnante", escrita por Alex Ross y dibujada a lápiz, entintada y coloreada por Sal Abbinanti, un artista con el que no estaba familiarizado pero cuyo enfoque bastante experimental aporta una fuerza narrativa única a un guión ya de por sí fascinante. Aquí Ben Grimm comparte una historia sobre su pasado, sus miedos y desafíos cuando era niño.

Disfruté particularmente la forma en que el pasado y el presente se entremezclan, por lo que cuando Ben Grimm habla de las peleas escolares, lo que vemos es su presente, como la Cosa. Introspectivo y conmovedor por derecho propio, el desarrollo repugnante resulta ser una bendición disfrazada. Pero, por supuesto, con un personaje como la Cosa, habrá preguntas constantes sobre la vida normal que queda atrás.

Marvel # 2 - Busiek, Ross, Rivera, Powell et al

The 8-month delay between the first and second issue (January 2021) of the anthology titled Marvel is due to the temporary shutdown of the American comic book industry in 2020. As many other industries, comic books also suffered the consequences of the coronavirus. Fortunately, after a year things are finally getting back to normal for the big publishers. For the cover of this second issue, Alex Ross combines all the old fonts used in Marvel comics in the 60s, creating quite an interesting effect.

In “Overture”, Alex Ross and Steve Darnall will show us the confrontation between Doctor Strange and his archnemesis Nightmare. My favorite is the first page and especially the first panel, that has an amazing composition, we have Doctor Strange’s unconscious face at the top and below, in a bubble created by Nightmare, the astral figure of the Sorcerer Supreme. Ross’ lines and colors complement each other spectacularly.

Dan Brereton writes and fully paints “Danger Room is Down”, a story that takes place in-between panels after the events of Giant Size X-Men (1975). The astonishing splash page reunites what in the 70s was the all-new team of X-Men: Beast, Havoc, Polaris, Colossus, Storm, Iceman, Jean Grey, Angel, Wolverine, Banshee, Sunfire, Nightcrawler and Warpath, who are about to undergo their first training session in the Danger Room. Cyclops and Professor X are monitoring the situation, and there are many tense moments, especially due to Wolverine’s rudeness. Brereton’s illustrations are amazing, and deserve to be enjoyed with enough calm and time to appreciate all the hard work the American artist has put into it.

“Leave the Demon, Take the Cannoli” is written, penciled, inked and partially colored by Eric Powell (with colors assistance by Marissa Louise). This one is a funny story about the Thing enjoying a day off while the rest of the Fantastic Four are out of town. My favorite sequence is the one in which the Thing wears Johnny Storm’s favorite underwear, and ruins it all in the process. Powell’s cartoonish style is ideal for this amusing tale in which even Doctor Doom shows up, hungry for cannoli.

However, the best story is “The Vision: Unphased”, written, penciled, inked and colored by Paolo Rivera, one of the most talented artists that has worked for Marvel in the past two decades. For reasons that the reader will only discover at the end, the Vision cannot use his phasing abilities and therefore rescuing people from a destroyed building proves to be a particularly difficult task. Rivera’s art has a unique quality, an unprecedented use of chiaroscuro techniques that go hand in hand with the overall realistic and dramatic portrayal of this story’s events. More human than ever thanks to the breathtakingly beautiful art of Rivera, the Vision proves what it means to truly be a hero in this rescue mission.

El retraso de 8 meses entre el primer y el segundo número (enero del 2021) de la antología titulada Marvel se debe al cierre temporal de la industria del cómic estadounidense en el 2020. Como muchas otras industrias, los cómics también sufrieron las consecuencias del coronavirus. Afortunadamente, después de un año, las cosas finalmente están volviendo a la normalidad para las grandes editoriales. Para la portada de este segundo número, Alex Ross combina todas las fuentes antiguas utilizadas en los cómics de Marvel en los 60s, creando un efecto bastante interesante.

En “Overture”, Alex Ross y Steve Darnall nos mostrarán el enfrentamiento entre Doctor Strange y su archienemigo Nightmare. Mi favorita es la primera página y especialmente la primera viñeta, que tiene una composición asombrosa, allí tenemos el rostro inconsciente del Doctor Strange arriba y abajo, en una burbuja creada por Nightmare, la figura astral del Hechicero Supremo. Los trazos y los colores de Ross se complementan espectacularmente.

Dan Brereton escribe y pinta completamente “El cuarto del peligro está averiado”, una historia que tiene lugar entre viñetas después de los eventos de Giant Size X-Men (1975). La asombrosa página de inicio reúne lo que en los 70s fue el equipo totalmente nuevo de los X-Men: Beast, Havoc, Polaris, Colossus, Storm, Iceman, Jean Grey, Angel, Wolverine, Banshee, Sunfire, Nightcrawler y Warpath, quienes están a punto de realizar su primera sesión de entrenamiento en el cuarto del peligro. Cyclops y el profesor X están monitoreando la situación, y hay muchos momentos tensos, especialmente debido a la rudeza de Wolverine. Las ilustraciones de Brereton son increíbles y merecen ser disfrutadas con suficiente calma y tiempo para apreciar todo el arduo trabajo que el artista estadounidense ha puesto en ellas.

“Deja al demonio, lleva los cannolis” está escrito, dibujado a lápiz, entintado y parcialmente coloreado por Eric Powell (con coloreado adicional de Marissa Louise). Esta es una historia divertida sobre la Mole disfrutando de un día libre mientras el resto de los Cuatro Fantásticos están fuera de la ciudad. Mi secuencia favorita es aquella en la que la Mole usa la ropa interior favorita de Johnny Storm y la arruina del todo en el proceso. El estilo caricaturesco de Powell es ideal para esta divertida historia en la que incluso el Doctor Doom aparece, hambriento de cannolis.

Sin embargo, la mejor historia es “La Visión: sin fase”, escrita, dibujada a lápiz, entintada y coloreada por Paolo Rivera, uno de los artistas más talentosos que ha trabajado para Marvel en las últimas dos décadas. Por razones que el lector sólo descubrirá al final, la Visión no puede usar sus habilidades para volverse intangible y, por lo tanto, rescatar personas de un edificio destruido resulta ser una tarea particularmente difícil. El arte de Rivera tiene una calidad única, un uso sin precedentes de las técnicas del claroscuro que van de la mano con la representación realista y dramática de los eventos de esta historia. Más humano que nunca gracias al arte asombrosamente hermoso de Rivera, Visión demuestra lo que significa ser un verdadero héroe en esta misión de rescate.

In 1939, a small publisher by the name of Timely Comics released an anthology titled Marvel Comics. 30 years later, after the arrival of Stan Lee, that company became Marvel Comics forever changing the history of the medium. 80 years have passed since the publication of Marvel Comics #1, and as part of the Marvels anniversary, Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross have decided to pay homage to the title that started it all, so much in fact that the magnificent cover by Ross takes as inspiration that of the 1939 comic.

As it was common at the time, comics usually followed the anthological format, featuring several short stories by different creative teams, just like Action Comics or Detective Comics. And certainly, Marvel #1 (May 2020) is true to the essence of yesteryear. In “Overture”, Alex Ross and Steve Darnall write about Nightmare, one of Doctor Strange’s most powerful villains. Alex Ross is also in charge of the interior art, and his pages are absolutely beautiful. In the first page, Nightmare is riding a horse through a landscape that doesn’t seem to belong to this world, and that is only the prelude of an extraordinary double page spread, in which we see dozens of heads, eyes closed, all of them, and on top, Nightmare, going from one panel to the next, connected to the dreaming minds of everyone. And the sequence that takes place in New York is beyond great!

In “Spider-Man: Make My Day”, Sajan Saini and Frank Espinosa tell a rather amusing story about Peter Parker and Mary Jane, dealing with the increasing costs of the ingredients needed for the web fluid, and the subsequent attack of the Rhino. The coloring is great but the art itself is a bit obscure sometimes, or is excessively trying to be impressionistic when, as well know, in comics there can be nothing better than figurative art.

“The Boy… and the Brute” is written by Kurt Busiek and illustrated by legendary artist Steve Rude, who adds a certain ‘retro’ style to his designs in this story that takes place in the Avengers’ past. The boy, of course, is Rick Jones, and the brute is the Hulk, two characters that share a unique connection, since one of them was responsible for the other’s transformation into an unstoppable green monster. All in all, a fantastic beginning for this new anthology!

En 1939, una pequeña editorial llamada Timely Comics publicó una antología titulada Marvel Comics. 30 años después, tras la llegada de Stan Lee, esa empresa se convirtió en Marvel Comics cambiando para siempre la historia del medio. Han pasado 80 años desde la publicación de Marvel Comics # 1, y como parte del aniversario de Marvels, Kurt Busiek y Alex Ross han decidido rendir homenaje al título que lo inició todo, tanto así que la magnífica portada de Ross está inspirada en la del cómic de 1939.

Como era común en ese momento, los cómics solían seguir el formato antológico, presentando varios relatos de diferentes equipos creativos, al igual que Action Comics o Detective Comics. Y ciertamente, Marvel # 1 (mayo de 2020) es fiel a la esencia de antaño. En "Obertura", Alex Ross y Steve Darnall le dan vida a Nightmare, uno de los villanos más poderosos de Doctor Strange. Alex Ross también está a cargo del arte interior, y sus páginas son absolutamente hermosas. En la primera página, Nightmare monta a caballo por un paisaje que no parece pertenecer a este mundo, y eso es sólo el preludio de una extraordinaria doble página, en la que vemos decenas de cabezas, ojos cerrados, todos ellos, y por encima, Nightmare, yendo de una viñeta a otra, conectado a todas las mentes soñadoras. ¡Y la secuencia que tiene lugar en New York es más que genial!

En "Spider-Man: Haz mi día", Sajan Saini y Frank Espinosa cuentan una historia bastante divertida sobre Peter Parker y Mary Jane, lidiando con los costos crecientes de los ingredientes necesarios para el fluido de la telaraña y el posterior ataque de Rhino. El coloreado es grandioso, pero el arte en sí es un poco oscuro a veces, o intenta excesivamente ser impresionista cuando, como bien sabemos, en los cómics no puede haber nada mejor que el arte figurativo.

"El muchacho... y el bruto" está escrito por Kurt Busiek e ilustrado por el legendario artista Steve Rude, quien agrega un cierto estilo "retro" a sus diseños en esta historia que tiene lugar en el pasado de los Vengadores. El muchacho, por supuesto, es Rick Jones, y el bruto es Hulk, dos personajes que comparten una conexión única, ya que uno de ellos fue el responsable de que el otro se transformara en un imparable monstruo verde. Un fantástico comienzo para esta nueva antología.

December comics / cómics de diciembre

 A dozen of comics helped me celebrate the end of 2020! Very quickly Doctor Doom has become my favorite ongoing series, I’m enjoying it so much! Marvel and Marvels Snapshots are always quite good. My favorite comic of the month was Strange Adventures #7, probably the best title DC has published in years! And now, without further ado, here are December 2020 comics as per solicitations:

¡Una docena de cómics me ayudaron a celebrar el final del 2020! Muy rápidamente Doctor Doom se ha convertido en mi serie favorita mensual, ¡la estoy disfrutando mucho! Since I went to Peru for a couple of weeks in August, I wasn’t able to read my comics until this week. But in any case, I have to say I really enjoyed catching up with ongoing titles like Die, Invaders and American Gods. I was impressed by the magnificent art in Conan the Barbarian Exodus. The Shock anthology was published last year but I bought it just now, and it’s an amazing book (with collaborators such as Neil Gaiman and Michael Zulli). Finally, my favorite comic of the month is Marvels Epilogue, by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross, a great standalone story that captures the magic of the original miniseries (published 25 years ago). And now, without further ado, here are August comics as per solicitations:

Como estuve en Perú por un par de semanas en agosto, no tuve tiempo de leer mis cómics hasta esta semana. pero en cualquier caso, debo decir que disfruté poniéndome al día con títulos como Die, Invaders and American Gods. Me impresionó el magnífico arte de Conan the Barbarian Exodus. La antología Shock se publicó el año pasado pero recién la compré ahora, y es asombrosa (tiene colaboradores como Neil Gaiman y Michael Zulli). Finalmente, mi cómic favorito del mes es Marvels Epilogue, de Kurt Busiek y Alex Ross una gran historia autoconclusiva que captura la magia de la miniserie original (que se publicó hace 25 años).
