Silver Surfer: Citizen of Earth - Dan Slott & Mike Allred

In the 60s, Stan Lee revolutionized the comics industry with the creation of the Marvel Universe, and after the original first wave of superheroes, the author tried new and different approaches to the superhuman archetype. One of such experiments would be the pacifist and melancholic Silver Surfer, the former herald of Galactus. Silver Surfer was a reluctant hero, constantly brooding, hesitant, always aware of what he had lost: his beloved Shamballa Bal, a girl from planet Zenn-La.  

Silver Surfer was one of Stan Lee’s favorite creations, and yet in recent decades the herald of Galactus had been languishing in limbo. Many creative teams tried to update the character, but their attempts were infructuous. Luckily for us, Dan Slott and Mike Allred found the ideal formula to revitalize the Silver Surfer, and to make him relevant again. 

Relying on a good sense of humor and the most outlandish sci-fi concepts, Slott successfully relaunched the Silver Surfer. And, following Marvel’s usual procedures, after a couple of years the title would be renumbered. “Homecoming” (Silver Surfer # 1, March 2016) marks the beginning of a new era and a great jumping on point. This time a bizarre group of aliens are planning to steal Earth’s “greatest resource”. Unlike many other stories about invaders from outer space, this time the much sought-after resource is culture. Every novel, every film, every comic book and TV show is taken by the aliens, every form of cultural and artistic expression disappears. Now that’s an idea that I absolutely love, it’s original and insane at the same time, and it fits so well with the overall tone of this series. 

There are a lot of funny moments in “Things Change” (Silver Surfer # 2, April 2016) and several homages to Doctor Who. Just like it happens quite frequently in the British TV series, Silver Surfer has to make up his mind about what he feels for his current human companion (in this case Dawn Greenwood) and his former and first ally, Alicia Masters. The tension between the two women and Silver Surfer’s inner doubts are just -priceless. However, the most shocking moment comes with the arrival of Shalla Bal, Silver Surfer’s long-lost love. “I Stand With Earth!” (Silver Surfer # 3, June 2016) is “a tale of triumph and tragedy” that celebrates the 50th anniversary of Silver Surfer.

Homage to a Clockwork Orange and Doctor Who / Homenaje a Una naranja mecánica y Doctor Who

Slott pays homage to the classic Lee and Kirby comics, reuniting the characters and making them face an adversary that, in some ways, is just as dangerous as Galactus. A dogmatic Shalla Bal insists on eradicating Earth’s culture and turning our planet into a replica of Zenn-La. During Lee’s era, Silver Surfer was a brooding character, shunned by those he pretended to save. This time, however, he is doubly rejected by the Zenn-La attackers and also by the people of the Earth, blinded by the promises of a better life. There is a magnificent scene in which many men and women surrender to the charming Shalla Bal, and Silver Surfer exclaims “There is a price for perfection! We need adversity! To strive! To grow!”. Most people don’t understand that, but Alicia Masters does. As a blind artist, it’s precisely her lack of sight which allows her to be one of the best sculptors in the world. So she stands against Shalla Bal and her promises of cold and lifeless perfection.

“Homeworld” (Silver Surfer # 4, July 2016) is a very special issue, in which we see how much the heroes of Earth admire the former herald of Galactus. And at last, but certainly not least, “Citizen of Earth” (Silver Surfer # 5, September 2016) and “Understanding the Alien Heart” (Silver Surfer # 6, October 2016) are two magnificent anniversary issues. Here Slott highlights the nobility and humanity of Silver Surfer, an alien who is finally respected and admired by everyone on Earth.

As usual, Mike Allred proves to be an amazing artist, able to combine a vintage sensibility with the most visually striking elements of pop art. In the hands of Allred, good comedy becomes an essential part of this comic, and thanks to the craziness and extravagance of these pages, Slott’s scripts become even more compelling and hilarious.

The Avengers

Con un buen sentido del humor y los conceptos más extravagantes de la ciencia-ficción, Slott relanzó con éxito a Silver Surfer. "Llegada a casa" (Silver Surfer # 1, marzo de 2016) marca el comienzo de una nueva era y es un gran punto de partida para nuevos lectores. Esta vez un extraño grupo de alienígenas está planeando robar el "mayor recurso" de la Tierra. A diferencia de muchas otras historias sobre invasores del espacio, esta vez el recurso más preciado es la cultura. Cada novela, cada película, cada cómic y programa de televisión es robado por los extraterrestres, cada forma de expresión cultural y artística desaparece. Esa es una idea que me encanta, es original y alocada al mismo tiempo, y encaja tan bien con el tono general de esta serie.

Heroes of the Earth / Héroes de la Tierra

Hay muchos momentos divertidos en "Las cosas cambian" (Silver Surfer # 2, abril de 2016) y varios homenajes a Doctor Who. Al igual que sucede con bastante frecuencia en la serie de televisión británica, Silver Surfer tiene que tomar una decisión sobre lo que siente por su actual compañera humana (en este caso Dawn Greenwood) y su antigua y primera aliada, Alicia Masters. La tensión entre las dos mujeres y las dudas internas de Silver Surfer llaman la atención. Sin embargo, el momento más impactante viene con la llegada de Shalla Bal, el amor perdido tiempo atrás. "Yo defiendo la Tierra" (Silver Surfer # 3, junio de 2016) es "un relato de triunfo y tragedia" que celebra el 50 aniversario de Silver Surfer.

Slott rinde homenaje a los cómics clásicos de Lee y Kirby, reuniendo a los personajes y haciendo que se enfrenten a un adversario que, de alguna manera, es tan peligroso como Galactus. Silver Surfer & Spider-Man

"Mundo hogar" (Silver Surfer # 4, julio de 2016) es un número muy especial, en el que vemos lo mucho que los héroes de la Tierra admiran al antiguo heraldo de Galactus. Y por último, pero no menos importante, "Ciudadano de la Tierra" (Silver Surfer # 5, septiembre de 2016) y "Entendiendo el corazón alienígena" (Silver Surfer # 6, octubre de 2016) son dos magníficos números de aniversario. Aquí Slott destaca la nobleza y la humanidad de Silver Surfer, un extraterrestre que finalmente es respetado y admirado por todos en la Tierra.

Como de costumbre, Mike Allred demuestra ser un artista increíble, capaz de combinar una sensibilidad nostálgia con los elementos más llamativos del arte pop. En las manos de Allred, la buena comedia se convierte en una parte esencial de este cómic, y gracias a la locura y la extravagancia de estas páginas, los guiones de Slott se vuelven aún más atractivos e hilarantes.

There were some promising first issues in September, like Doom Patrol #1. Cinema Purgatorio continues to impress me, but my favorite issue of the month was Silver Surfer #6. And now, without further ado, here are September comics as per solicitations:

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1

CINEMA PURGATORIO #5

This issue continues Cinema Purgatorio by Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill, A More Perfect Union by Max Brooks and Michael DiPascale, Code Pru by Garth Ennis and Raulo Caceres, Modded by Kieron Gillen and Ignacio Calero, and The Vast by Christos Gage and Gabriel Andrade. Each story has its own cover by the series artist and there is also an Ancient Tome Premium edition limited to 1000 copies.

DOOM PATROL #1 BOLLAND CVR

They are being watched though, and Daddy's little girl is out for revenge. Rated T+

INTERNATIONAL IRON MAN #7

JACKED #1 (MR)

Eric Kripke (creator of Supernatural) teams up with Vertigo veterans John Higgins (HELLBLAZER) and Glenn Fabry (PREACHER) to bring you a very Vertigo take on the modern superhero in this six-issue miniseries. Josh Jaffe, a neurotic family man mid-midlife crisis, buys an online 'smart pill' to increase his focus and jolt him out of his slump. But to Josh's surprise, the pill gives him incredible strength and power-but its cost is that it's extremely addictive. This irreverent and brutally realistic story examines both the mighty highs and humiliating lows of being a real-life superhero.

Silver Surfer: Escape to Terror - Stan Lee & John Byrne

In the 60s, Stan Lee was the most prolific writer in the comics industry. And after creating literally hundreds of characters and an entire narrative universe, he simply stepped down of his role as a creator in 1972 and stopped writing on a monthly basis. However, the legendary author would return to his writing duties sporadically in the 80s, and it’s no surprise to see that he would focus on one of his favorite creations: Silver Surfer.  

Stan Lee has always worked with the best artists of the industry; in the 60s his frequent collaborators were Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko or John Buscema, so obviously this tendency remained intact in the 80s. That’s why Lee decided to work with Moebius, one of the finest European artists (one of the best ones in the entire world), and the result was the magnificent Silver Surfer: Parable. And in June 1982, Lee recruited someone who was arguably the most famous and respected artist in the American industry at the time: John Byrne.

“Escape -- to Terror!” is a one-of-a-kind collaboration between two masters of the medium. Stan Lee was the plotter, and John Byrne the scripter and penciler; Tom Palmer inked Byrne’s pages, adding a very special texture that immediately reminded me of John Buscema’s style (Buscema was the main artist in Lee’s Silver Surfer short-lived monthly series in the late 60s). 

Silver Surfer has always been depicted as a brooding character, with more things in common to Shakespeare’s Hamlet than the typical superpowered swashbuckler. He possesses the power cosmic, which effectively turns him into a superior being, far above mortal men, and yet all this power brings him no joy. As Galactus herald he was doomed to search for planets to placate the hunger of the Devourer of Worlds, a mission that constantly made him feel guilty. 

After arriving to Earth, Silver Surfer defies Galactus and becomes an ally of the Fantastic Four, thus saving our planet. But Galactus traps him on Earth. Unable to return to his homeworld, Silver Surfer would become a melancholic figure always remembering his lost love, Shalla Bal, and the beauty of the planet he left behind, Zenn-La. In this one-shot, Silver Surfer tries to break Galactus barrier and return to his galaxy. “Even in failure there can be nobility. But failure to try brings only shame!”, explains Silver Surfer. This idea is also a leit motiv in “Parable”, and it’s a fundamental aspect of Silver Surfer. 

A melancholic hero / un héroe melancólico

“Others may battle with victory in sight -- but the Surfer still strives when all hope is gone!”, it’s precisely this perseverance which makes possible the confrontation between Silver Surfer and his master in the classic Trilogy of Galactus. In this opportunity, aided by the Fantastic Four, the Silver Surfer is able to break Galactus barrier and he travels to his world at the speed of light. But instead of the glimmering towers and the proud cities of the past, he finds a barren and desolated wasteland. 

Galactus

After losing his herald, Galactus had returned to Zenn-La and consumed the world’s life energy. Those who were able to escape in their spaceships had returned to Zenn-La, but the planet can no longer sustain any lifeform. Saddened, the protagonist is received by an angry mob and accused of betraying Zenn-La. To make matters worse, he finds out that his beloved Shalla Bal is a prisoner of Mephisto, so he must return to Earth. 

“Escape -- to Terror” is a 48 page one-shot that has everything a Silver Surfer fan could look for: a story of tragic proportions and cosmic depth and really extraordinary art. I would recommend reading it along with Parable, to fully savor Stan Lee’s narrative proposal.

Y después de crear, literalmente, cientos de personajes y todo un universo narrativo, él simplemente se retiró de su papel como creador en 1972 y dejó de escribir colecciones mensuales. Sin embargo, el legendario autor regresaría a sus funciones de escritor de forma esporádica en los 80s, y no es una sorpresa ver que se centraría en una de sus creaciones favoritas: Silver Surfer.

Fantastic Four

Stan Lee siempre ha trabajado con los mejores artistas de la industria; en los 60s sus colaboradores frecuentes eran Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko o John Buscema, por lo que, obviamente, esta tendencia se mantuvo intacta en los 80s. Es por eso que Lee decidió trabajar con Moebius, uno de los mejores artistas europeos (y uno de los mejores a nivel mundial), y el resultado fue la magnífica Silver Surfer: Parábola. Y en junio de 1982, Lee reclutó a alguien que fue sin duda el artista más famoso y respetado en la industria estadounidense en aquella época: John Byrne.

“Escape -- al terror” es una obra que reúne a dos maestros del noveno arte. Stan Lee propuso el argumento, y John Byrne fue el guionista y dibujante; Tom Palmer entintó las páginas de Byrne, dotándolas de una textura muy especial que me recordó de inmediato al estilo de John Buscema (Buscema era el artista principal en la serie de corta duración de Silver Surfer que Lee escribía a finales de los 60s).

Silver Surfer siempre ha sido representado como un personaje melancólico, con más cosas en común con Hamlet de Shakespeare que con un típico aventurero con superpoderes. Él posee el poder cósmico, eso lo convierte efectivamente en un ser superior, muy por encima de los mortales, y sin embargo, este poder no le trae ninguna alegría. April comics / cómics de abril

April sure came with a lot of good surprised. For the first time in my life, I decided to buy a Marvel Omnibus, and I’m glad I did. Marvel Universe by John Byrne is an extraordinary edition that compiles the works of one of my favorite creators; there are over one thousand pages of Byrne art in here and each page is a true delight for me; I’m just thrilled to have this amazing hardcover in my possession. Millar did a satisfactory job with the final issue of Huck and the first issue of Empress. I really enjoyed Silver Surfer and Jupiter’s Circle. Bermejo’s new Suciders series was quite impressive. Providence continues to be one of the best miniseries and this particular issue has some really unforgettable moments. But the best issue of the month was The Fix # 1, I couldn’t stop laughing while reading this transgressive comic… can’t remember the last time I had so much fun with a first issue, which is why I’m giving Nick Spencer due credit for this awesome new series. And now, without further ado, here are April comics as per solicitations:

EMPRESS #1

Hubo muchas buenas sorpresas en abril. Por primera vez en mi vida decidí comprar un Marvel Omnibus y me alegra haberlo hecho. “Marvel Universe by John Byrne” es una extraordinaria edición que recopila la obra de uno de mis creadores favoritos; hay más de mil páginas de arte de Byrne aquí, y cada página es una verdadera delicia; estoy encantado de tener en mis manos este asombroso tomo en tapa dura. Millar hizo un trabajo satisfactorio con el número final de “Huck” y el primer ejemplar de “Empress”. Realmente disfruté con “Silver Surfer” y “Jupiter’s Circle”. La nueva serie de “Suciders” de Bermejo fue bastante impresionante. “Providence” sigue siendo una de las mejores miniseries y en este número en particular hay momentos realmente inolvidables. Pero lo mejor del mes fue “The Fix”, no pude dejar de reír mientras leía este cómic transgresor… no recuerdo la última vez que me divertí tanto con un primer ejemplar, así que le doy a Nick Spencer el crédito que merece por esta estupenda nueva serie. Silver Surfer # 4, 5 & 6 - Dan Slott & Michael Allred

It was only inevitable to find Silver Surfer and the Guardians of the Galaxy reunited in the pages of this cosmic title. And indeed, in “Earthly Needs”, the former herald of Galactus decides to return Dawn to her homeworld. But before entering Earth’s atmosphere there is a hilarious meeting between Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Captain Marvel, Venom and Silver Surfer. 

Fun is always welcome, and the meeting between the protagonist and the Guardians of the Galaxy is overflowing with clever jokes and witty remarks. I won’t spoil any surprises, but I will say I had a lot of fun reading this chapter. Nevertheless, back on our planet, not everything is well in Anchor Bay, Massachusetts. Silver Surfer is aware of a disturbance but he can’t pinpoint its origin. Worried, he accompanies Dawn to her home; and there he meets her family.

As suggested by Dawn, Silver Surfer reverts to his Norrin Radd identity, and together they spend a lovely afternoon, having a nice lunch and sharing anecdotes with the girl’s sister and father. But there’s something sinister going on in Anchor Bay, something sinister enough to demand the presence of Doctor Strange and even the Hulk. 

In “New Dawn”, the Sorcerer Supreme understands that this time he’s facing one of his most powerful enemies: the Lord of Nightmares. Doctor Strange, Hulk and Silver Surfer (all former members of the superhero team The Defenders) must defend Earth once again. However, how can they fight against the ethereal realm of nightmares? 

Nightmare has imprisoned every living mind on Earth, and is forcing them to experience their nightmares as if they were real. Only the astral form of Doctor Strange has resisted; Bruce Banner is trapped in his bad dreams, but not the Hulk. The key to defeat Nightmare lies in the hands of Dawn. As she has recently arrived to our world, she has not been affected by this oneiric attack.

Venom, Drax, Star-Lord, Gamora, Groot, Rocket Raccoon & Silver Surfer

One of Slott’s wisest choices is to let us know what Dawn and her family dream about. The fears of Dawn’s sister are very strong: she is scared of being trapped in the little town of Anchor Bay, the father is frightened of losing her daughters. But eventually we can all overcome our fears. In the end, after Nightmare is no longer a threat, father and sister must say goodbye to the girl that means so much to them. For years, Dawn had sacrificed her dreams to run the family inn, putting ahead the needs of others. Now it’s about time to embrace her passion and go to the stars, with Silver Surfer.

Trapped in Anchor Bay / Atrapados en Anchor Bay

“Imperfections” is a very funny self-contained adventure. Here Slott proves why comedy is always important (something a lot of Marvel writers seemed to have forgotten). Humor is what makes us human, after all. And who could be more human than Dawn, a normal girl, compared to Silver Surfer, wielder of the Power Cosmic? For the former herald of Galactus, having an earthling as travel companionship is terribly frustrating. And for us, the readers, the contrast between them is an invitation to laughter. Humans may be imperfect creatures, but perhaps that’s what Silver Surfer finds so charming about Dawn.

Dawn’s normal biological needs are baffling for the Silver Surfer. She has to eat constantly, and go to the bathroom, and sleep, and so on. So instead of traveling to the furthest reaches of the galaxy, Silver Surfer is forced to make constant stops along the way, to find planets with food that a human could digest. That’s how they get to Planet Prime, a world devoted to perfection. There, Warrior One, the Ultimate Soldier, battles against Silver Surfer. 

The illustrations by penciler / inker Mike Allred and colorist Laura Allred are gorgeous. The Allreds are able to convey so many emotions in their pages. Furthermore, they also pay homage to comic book artists from the classic period, and instead of choosing dark settings they always embrace light and color. Mike Allred’s panels are truly impressive.

Hulk, Doctor Strange & Silver Surfer

Era inevitable que Silver Surfer y los Guardianes de la Galaxia se reunieran en las páginas de este título cósmico. Y de hecho, en “Necesidades terrenales”, el ex heraldo de Galactus decide regresar a Dawn a su mundo natal. Pero antes de entrar en la atmósfera de la Tierra, hay un hilarante encuentro entre Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Captain Marvel, Venom y Silver Surfer. 

La diversión siempre es bienvenida, y el encuentro entre el protagonista y los Guardianes de la Galaxia está cargado de bromas astutas y observaciones ingeniosas. No arruinaré ninguna sorpresa, pero diré que me divertí bastante leyendo este capítulo. No obstante, de vuelta a nuestro planeta, no todo anda bien en Anchor Bay, Massachusetts. Silver Surfer es conciente de un disturbio pero no puede precisar su origen. Preocupado, acompaña a Dawn a su hogar; y allí conoce a su familia. 

Por una sugerencia de Dawn, Silver Surfer revierte a su identidad de Norrin Radd, y juntos pasan una tarde encantadora, con un buen almuerzo y compartiendo anécdotas con la hermana y el padre de Dawn. Pero hay algo siniestro en Anchor Bay, algo tan siniestro que amerita la presencia de Doctor Strange e incluso Hulk. 

En “Nuevo amanecer”, el Hechicero Supremo comprende que esta vez se está enfrentando a uno de sus más poderosos enemigos: el Amo de las Pesadillas. Doctor Strange, Hulk y Silver Surfer (todos antiguos integrantes del equipo superheroico Los Defensores) deben defender a la Tierra una vez más. Sin embargo, ¿cómo pueden pelear contra el reino etéreo de las pesadillas? 

Norrin Radd and Dawn fight against Nightmare / Norrin Radd y Dawn pelean contra Pesadilla

Pesadilla ha aprisionado todas las mentes vivientes de la Tierra, obligándolas a experimentar sus pesadillas como si fuesen reales. Sólo la forma astral de Doctor Strange ha resistido; Bruce Banner está atrapado en sus malos sueños, pero Hulk no. La clave para vencer a Pesadilla yace en las manos de Dawn. Como ella ha llegado recientemente a nuestro mundo, no ha sido afectada por este ataque onírico.

Silver Surfer versus Warrior One

Una de las más sabias elecciones de Slott es permitirnos conocer los sueños de Dawn y su familia. Los miedos de la hermana de Dawn son muy fuertes: ella teme quedar atrapada en el pequeño pueblito de Anchor Bay, al padre le aterra perder a sus hijas. Pero eventualmente todos podemos sobreponernos a nuestros miedos. Al final, después de que Pesadilla deja de ser una amenaza, el padre y la hermana deben decirle adiós a la chica que tanto significa para ellos. Durante años, Dawn había sacrificado sus sueños para manejar la pensión familiar, anteponiendo las necesidades de otros. Ahora ya llegó el momento de abrazar su pasión y partir rumbo a las estrellas, con Silver Surfer.

Not so imperfect after all / no tan imperfecto después de todo

“Imperfecciones” es una aventura autoconclusiva muy divertida. Aquí Slott demuestra por qué la comedia siempre es importante (algo que muchos escritores de Marvel parecen haber olvidado). El humor es lo que nos hace humanos, después de todo. ¿Y quién podría ser más humana que Dawn, una chica normal, comparada con Silver Surfer, portador del Poder Cósmico? Para el ex heraldo de Galactus, tener a una terráquea como compañera de viaje es terriblemente frustrante. Y para nosotros, los lectores, el contraste entre ambos es una invitación a la risa. Los humanos quizá sean criaturas imperfectas, pero tal vez por eso Silver Surfer encuentra a Dawn tan encantadora.

Las necesidades biológicas normales de Dawn desconciertan a Silver Surfer. Ella tiene que comer constantemente, e ir al baño, y dormir, y así sucesivamente. Así que en vez de viajar a los más lejanos confines de la galaxia, Silver Surfer se ve obligado a detenerse constantemente por el camino, para encontrar planetas con comida que un humano podría digerir. Así es como llegan a Planet Prime, un mundo que adora la perfección. Allí, Warrior One, el soldado definitivo, combate con Silver Surfer. 

Las ilustraciones del artista Mike Allred y la colorista Laura Allred son preciosas. Los Allred son capaces de transmitir tantas emociones en sus páginas. Además, rinden homenaje a los dibujantes de cómics del período clásico, y en vez de elegir escenarios oscuros optan siempre por la luz y el color. Las viñetas de Mike Allred son realmente impresionantes.

Silver Surfer # 1, 2 & 3 - Dan Slott & Mike Allred

When Stan Lee and Jack Kirby introduced Silver Surfer to the public in the pages of Fantastic Four, he was the herald of Galactus, an obedient servant that would find worlds so that his master could devour them thus placating his endless hunger.

But immediately after his memorable first appearance, Silver Surfer became something else, something harder to define. He was a rebel who would fight against Galactus in order to save Earth, but he was also a melancholic outcast, a misunderstood loner, an unwilling hero with enough inner doubts to compete against Shakespeare’s Hamlet. 

Dan Slott recovers the cosmic grandeur present in the origin of the character and grounds it with the incorporation of Dawn, an ordinary girl from Earth that suddenly turns into “The Most Important Person in the Universe” (coincidentally, the title of the inaugural chapter).

“Everything and All at Once” describes Dawn’s adventures, as she manages to free herself from her alien captors and has enough courage and charisma to lead a revolt against the Incredulous Zed and his powerful army. But it’s only in the third chapter, titled “Change of Heart”, when we get to admire the full scope of Slott’s ambitious tale. For me, the moments shared between the Never Queen and Eternity are priceless. They are also a magnificent homage to Marvel’s cosmic past.

Of course, as you may have imagined, I didn’t buy this title only because of Dan Slott. I should say, in fact, that I bought it because of Michael Allred and Laura Allred, one of my favorite artistic teams. Last year they graced the pages of FF (as a matter of fact, in FF # 16, they portrayed a vibrant and very likeable Silver Surfer, perhaps a prophecy of what was yet to come).

With only a few issues, I’ve already read a lot of positive comments about this new Silver Surfer series. I would say it is by far the best treatment of Galactus’s herald that I’ve seen in decades. And it is all thanks to the great creative team formed by Dan Slott and Mike Allred.

For the past few years, Slott has been comfortably entrenched in the gulfs of the Spider-Man universe, but once upon a time he was a new writer, someone completely unknown, someone eager to tell stories about the human –and the superhuman– condition. When I read his first issues in She-Hulk I knew I had found someone special, an author with a refreshing perspective and an impeccable sense of humor. And all of that is rescued in the pages of Silver Surfer. 

Because Slott does succeed in combining the cosmic threats and larger-than-life heroes with clever jokes, sharing always the sensibilities of Russell T. Davies (creator of famous British series like “Queer as Folk”), the man responsible for the current success of “Doctor Who” (in fact, Slott publicly acknowledges his creative debt with Mr. Davies). Even Silver Surfer’s sense of grandeur, the impossible odds and the extraterrestrial threats, seem to keep the same jovial spirit of a legendary TV series like “Doctor Who”.

So do I recommend Silver Surfer? Yes, by all means!

Dawn

Cuando Stan Lee y Jack Kirby presentaron a Silver Surfer en las páginas de los Cuatro Fantásticos, él era el heraldo de  Galactus, un sirviente obediente que encontraba mundos para que su amo pudiese devorarlos y, así, aplacar su hambre infinita.

Pero inmediatamente después de su memorable primera aparición, Silver Surfer se convirtió en algo más, algo difícil de definir. Fue un rebelde que peleó contra Galactus para salvar la Tierra, pero también fue un marginado melancólico, un solitario incomprendido, un héroe por obligación con suficientes dudas internas para competir con el Hamlet de Shakespeare. 

Dan Slott recupera la grandeza cósmica presente en el origen del personaje y la asienta en tierra firme con la incorporación de Dawn, una chica ordinaria de la Tierra que repentinamente se convierte en “La persona más importante del universo” (no es coincidencia que ese sea el título del capítulo inaugural).

“Todos y todo a la vez” describe las aventuras de Dawn, quien se las arregla para liberarse de sus captores alienígenos y tiene suficiente valentía y carisma para liderar una revolución en contra de Zed, el Incrédulo y su poderosa armada. Pero es sólo en el tercer capítulo, titulado “Cambio de corazón”, cuando podemos admirar el verdadero alcance del ambicioso relato de Slott. Para mí, los momentos compartidos entre la Reina Nunca y Eternidad son invalorables. También son un magnífico homenaje al pasado cósmico de Marvel.

Desde luego, como pueden haber imaginado, no compré este título sólo por Dan Slott. Debería decir, de hecho, que lo compré por Michael Allred y Laura Allred, uno de mis equipos artísticos favoritos. El año pasado agraciaron las páginas de "FF" (de hecho, en el FF # 16, retrataron a un Silver Surfer vibrante y muy simpático, tal vez una profecía de lo que estaba por venir).

Con pocos números, ya he leído muchos comentarios positivos sobre esta nueva colección de Silver Surfer. Yo diría que es de lejos el mejor tratamiento del heraldo de Galactus que he visto en décadas. Y es todo gracias al gran equipo creativo formado por Dan Slott y Mike Allred.

En años recientes, Slott se había atrincherado cómodamente en las cavidades del universo de "Spider-Man", pero hace mucho tiempo él fue un escritor nuevo, alguien completamente desconocido, alguien impaciente por contar historias sobre la condición humana –y la superhumana. Cuando leí sus primeros números en "She-Hulk" supe que había encontrado a alguien especial, a un autor con una perspectiva refrescante y un impecable sentido del humor. Y todo ello es rescatado en las páginas de "Silver Surfer".

Y es que Slott tiene éxito al combinar las amenazas cósmicas y los héroes legendarios con bromas astutas, compartiendo siempre las sensibilidades de Russell T. Davies (creador de famosas series británicas como “Queer as Folk”), el hombre responsable por el éxito actual de “Doctor Who” (de hecho, Slott admite públicamente su deuda creativa con el señor Davies). Incluso el sentido de grandeza de Silver Surfer, los retos imposibles y las amenazas extraterrestres, parecen conservar el mismo espíritu jovial de una serie de televisión tan legendaria como “Doctor Who”.

Así que, ¿les recomiendo Silver Surfer? ¡Claro que sí!
