April Comics / cómics de abril

I received some extraordinary comics in April. Silver Surfer and Infamous Iron Man were very good, but the conclusion of Unworthy Thor was even more special, not only because Aaron and Coipel are a great creative team but also because my letter was published in the letters column. The first issue of Shaolin Cowboy had some truly wonderful artwork (Darrow is always impressive). Cinema Purgatorio continues to be an amazing anthology and with only 2 issues American Gods is about to become my favorite series. And I’m also glad to have some classic material like Alan Moore’s Night Raven or George Pérez’s Wonder Woman. My favorite issue of the month was Providence # 12. And now without further ado here are April comics as per solicitations:

AMERICAN GODS: SHADOWS #2

Recibí extraordinarios cómics en abril. Silver Surfer e Infamous Iron Man fueron muy buenos, pero la conclusión de Unworthy Thor fue incluso más especial, no sólo porque Aaron y Coipel son un gran equipo creativo sino también porque mi carta fue publicado en la sección de cartas. El primer número de Shaolin Cowboy tiene un arte de primera (Darrow siempre impresiona). Cinema Purgatorio sigue siendo una antología asombrosa y con sólo 2 números American Gods está a punto de convertirse en mi serie favorita. Y también me alegra tener material clásico como Night Raven de Alan Moore o Wonder Woman de George Pérez. Mi cómic favorito del mes fue Providence # 12. Huck - Mark Millar & Rafael Albuquerque

It’s been over a decade since I read Superman: Red Son for the first time, an Elseworlds project written by Mark Millar that turned out to be one of the best Superman stories ever written.  Red Son is up there with Alan Moore’s “Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow” or John Byrne’s “Man of Steel”, it really is that good. And that shouldn’t come as a surprise, given the fact that Millar has often explained how much he loves Superman. But, save a few issues here and there, he was never a frequent Superman writer back when he was still working for DC Comics.

So as the smart man he is, Millar found the way to scratch this literary itch in the form of Superior and now Huck. Both works complement each other rather nicely, so I think it would be fitting to read them (or re-read them) at the same time. Huck is a friendly approach to the superhero genre with a nice touch of brightness and candor. In the words of Antony Delfini “we live in a world of cynicism, materialism, vanity, and selfishness. Huck is a breadth of fresh air because he’s the opposite of that mentality”.

Huck is a big guy –with an even bigger heart– from a small American town. He does at least one good deed a day, and he has become a blessing for all the people around him. But as soon as he decides to expand his radius of influence, and help men and women outside the US, his secret is now out in the open. No longer the town’s mysterious Samaritan, Huck is now a reluctant celebrity who must fight against hordes of newspaper journalists and TV reporters… and in the process he’s offered the possibility of finding out who his real mother is. 

There is something deceptively simple about Millar’s concept. This isn’t just a homage to Superman’s roots, it’s also an insightful portray of who we are as a society and what we expect, as readers, from our heroes. Huck is the guy who will help others asking for nothing in return. Some might consider that an odd behavior, why work so hard for others when he could become the richest man on Earth? Why is he so modest when he could be worldwide famous? Why bother to intervene when he could be much better off by simply abstaining from the conflicts of his nation? Perhaps because he believes he can make a difference, and because he everything he does is for the right reason. 

So instead of mindlessly fighting against supervillains like Superman does in his monthly titles, Huck lives a quiet life, preventing conflicts instead of going into battle, helping others in time so that he won’t have to worry about them later. There is something absolutely charming about this resurrection of the classic superhero.

Of course, there is also plenty of action in Huck, as he will be forced to fight against a powerful android who keeps his mother in prison. The action scenes are adequate, but personally I think they betray a little bit the essence of the protagonist. Perhaps it would’ve been more interesting to focus more on Huck’s everyday life and, just for once, forget about the evil villain lurking in the shadows.

To be honest, it took me a couple of issues to warm up to Rafael Albuquerque’s style but I ended up enjoying his contribution. An accomplished penciler and inker, Albuquerque rose to prominence after his collaborations in Vertigo’s American Vampire. He doesn’t seem to be too keen on details or realistic anatomy, but that doesn’t detract from the evident value of his work. In fact, it’s thanks to his loose lines, his dynamic composition and his kinetic pages that we can appreciate the true nature of a character like Huck. His lines are wonderfully enhanced by Dave McCaig’s coloring, who provides the right mood in every scene with just a touch of the right pigment.

Red Son es comparable con “¿Qué pasó con el Hombre del Mañana?” de Alan Moore o “Man of Steel” de John Byrne. Y eso no debería ser una sorpresa, teniendo en cuenta que Millar ha explicado a menudo lo mucho que le encanta Superman. Pero, salvo algunos números desperdigados, él nunca fue un escritor habitual de Superman en la época en la que todavía estaba trabajando para DC Comics.

Millar, con la astucia que lo caracteriza, encontró la manera de rascarse esta picazón literaria bajo la forma de Superior y ahora “Huck”. Ambos trabajos se complementan entre sí bastante bien, así que creo que sería adecuado leerlos (o re-leerlos) al mismo tiempo. Huck es un enfoque amigable sobre el género de los superhéroes, con un toque de optimismo y sinceridad. En palabras de Antonio Delfini “vivimos en un mundo de cinismo, materialismo, vanidad y egoísmo. Huck es una bocanada de aire fresco porque es lo opuesto de esa mentalidad”.

Huck es un sujeto grande –con un corazón aún más grande– en una pequeña ciudad norteamericana. Él hace por lo menos una buena acción al día, y se ha convertido en una bendición para todos los que lo rodean. Pero apenas decide ampliar su radio de influencia, y ayudar a la gente en otros países, su secreto sale a flote. En vez de ser el misterioso samaritano del pueblito, Huck es ahora una celebridad que debe luchar contra las hordas de periodistas de la prensa y reporteros de televisión... y en el proceso podrá descubrir quién es su verdadera madre.

El concepto central de Millar es aparentemente muy simple. Esto no es solamente un homenaje a las raíces de Superman, también es un retrato perspicaz de lo que somos como sociedad y lo que esperamos, como lectores, de nuestros héroes. Huck es el sujeto que va a ayudar a los demás sin esperar nada a cambio. Algunos podrían considerar que ese es un comportamiento extraño, ¿por qué ayudar a otras personas cuando podría convertirse en el hombre más rico de la Tierra? ¿Por qué es tan modesto cuando podría ser mundialmente famoso? ¿Por qué preocuparse por intervenir cuando podría abstenerse de los conflictos de su nación? Tal vez porque él cree que puede hacer la diferencia, y porque todo lo que hace es por una buena razón.

Así que en lugar de luchar tontamente contra supervillanos, como hace Superman en su colección mensual, Huck vive una vida tranquila, previene conflictos antes de que desemboquen en algo peor, ayuda a otros en el momento adecuado para no tener que preocuparse por ellos más tarde. Hay algo absolutamente encantador acerca de esta resurrección del superhéroe clásico.

Trapped / atrapados

Por supuesto, también hay un montón de acción en Huck, sobre todo cuando se verá obligado a luchar contra un poderoso androide que ha aprisionado a su madre. Las escenas de acción son adecuadas, pero personalmente creo que traicionan un poco la esencia del protagonista. Tal vez hubiera sido más interesante centrarse más en la vida cotidiana de Huck y, por una vez, olvidar al malvado villano que acecha desde las sombras.

Para ser honesto, me tomó un par de números acostumbrarme al estilo de Rafael Albuquerque pero terminé disfrutando su contribución. Albuquerque es un buen dibujante y un sólido entintador; él saltó a la fama después de sus colaboraciones en American Vampire de Vertigo. No parece estar demasiado interesado en la anatomía realista o en ser detallista, pero eso no le resta valor a su obra. De hecho, es gracias a sus líneas sueltas, su composición dinámica y sus vibrantes páginas que podemos apreciar la verdadera naturaleza de un personaje como Huck. Sus líneas están maravillosamente realzadas por el coloreado de Dave McCaig, que proporciona la atmósfera adecuada en cada escena con el pigmento apropiado.

February comics / cómics de febrero

February was such a good month for comics. I’m amazed by the high quality of Doctor Strange and Silver Surfer, which are quickly turning into my most eagerly-awaited monthly series. Millar is still firing on all cylinders with Huck and especially the second volume of Jupiter’s Circle. And Image has a couple of promising new series: Snowfall and Cry Havoc. However, once again my favorite comic of the month, and by quite a large margin, is Alan Moore’s Providence # 7. Can’t wait to start reviewing this series. And now without further ado here are February comics as per solicitations:

Febrero fue un gran mes en materia de cómics. Estoy asombrado por la altísima calidad de “Doctor Strange” y “Silver Surfer”, que se están convirtiendo en dos de mis series mensuales predilectas. Millar sigue dando lo mejor de sí con “Huck” y especialmente el segundo volumen de “Jupiter’s Circle”. Image ha lanzado un par de títulos prometedores: “Snowfall” y “Cry Havoc”. Sin embargo, una vez más, mi cómic favorito del mes es, de lejos, Providence # 7 de Alan Moore. Estoy impaciente por reseñar esta serie. January comics / cómics de enero

The beginning of 2016 comes with plenty of comics, just the way I like it. The first issue of Silver Surfer was very good, and I really enjoyed the conclusion of Nameless (I’ll be reviewing the series in April); Doctor Strange and Jupiter’s Circle keep getting better and better. I must say my favorite comic of the month was Alan Moore’s Providence # 6. And now without further ado here are January comics as per solicitations:

El 2016 empieza lleno de cómics, tal como a mí me gusta. El primer número de “Silver Surfer” fue muy bueno, y realmente disfruté la conclusión de “Nameless” (estaré reseñando esta serie en abril); “Doctor Strange” y “Jupiter’s Circle” siguen mejorando. Debo decir que mi cómic favorito del mes fue Providence # 6 de Alan Moore. Y ahora sin mayores preámbulos aquí están los cómics de enero:

Union Jack - Ben Raab & John Cassaday

Amateur writers have a particularly difficult time breaking into the comic book industry, but that doesn’t mean artists have it easier. 20 years ago, when John Cassaday left his home in Texas to follow his crazy dreams of becoming an artist, he probably asked himself if he was making the right decision. That’s the kind of question nobody can answer for you. And perhaps that’s a good thing, because it means people will never find the right argument to discourage you.

So two decades ago Cassaday met Mark Waid in a comic book convention, and the veteran writer was amazed at the way this Texan newcomer “knew how to draw mood and emotion and not just pole-dancers in superhero costumes”. Even at the beginning of his career, Cassaday could portray so many emotions in just one panel, effectively creating an atmosphere that was unique and that elevated whatever comic he was working on from a simple entertainment product into a superb work of art. 

For the past few years, I’ve been tracking down Cassaday’s ‘old stuff’. Sure, we all know how brilliant he was in Planetary or Astonishing X-Men, and how he repeatedly won the most prestigious awards of the industry (Eisner Awards, Eagle Awards, etc.), but I wanted to find out how did it all begin. So that’s why I picked up Union Jack, a 3-issue miniseries co-written by Ben Raab and John Cassaday and, of course, fully illustrated by Cassaday.

In “Tradition” (originally published in Union Jack # 1, December 1998), Joey Chapman (the new Union Jack) remembers his predecessor (Lord Falsworth) and, at the same time, uncovers a vampire conspiracy that will force him to visit old friends like Lady Jacqueline Falsworth Crichton (a woman who fought in WWII and that hasn’t aged a day since then) and her son Kenneth Crichton (a frail man who suffers from a very abnormal case of anemia).

Cassaday, of course, is no stranger to the vampiric subgenre, and his interest for Dracula’s legacy has led him to be the artist in I Am Legion (an extraordinary French miniseries about vampires in WWII) and the cover illustrator for Dynamite’s The Complete Dracula. “Faith” (Union Jack # 2, January 1999) and “Fate” (Union Jack # 2, February 1999) are faithful to the classic Bram Stoker concepts but they also include many legends and historical conjectures to substantiate an already appealing premise. 

Union Jack versus the vampires / Union Jack versus los vampiros

Union Jack turned out to be a very interesting miniseries, certainly better than many of the titles Marvel was publishing back then. Characters are well-defined, motives remain clear and the villainous Baron Blood is as scary as ever. And the art is amazing. Naturally, in the late 90s, Cassaday was still in the process of refining his artistic style, so he was still lacking a certain visual sophistication and his attention for details wasn’t as admirable as it is now. And yet, a quick glance at his pages was more than enough to notice how immensely talented he was. His dynamic images, his sense of composition, his graphic virtuosity, it’s all there, and like a diamond in the rough, it doesn’t need to be polished to captivate the eye of the beholder. Cassaday’s covers are iconic and powerful, successfully turning a rather obscure character into the ultimate superhero.

Para un escritor novato resulta particularmente difícil entrar a la industria del cómic, pero eso no significa que para los artistas sea más fácil lograrlo. Hace 20 años, cuando John Cassaday abandonó su natal Texas para seguir su alocado sueño de artista, es probable que se preguntara si estaba tomando la decisión correcta. Ese es el tipo de pregunta que nadie puede responder por ti. Y tal vez eso sea una ventaja, porque significa que la gente nunca encontrará el argumento adecuado para desanimarte.

Así que hace dos décadas Cassaday conoció a Mark Waid en una convención de cómics, y el veterano escritor fue sorprendido por la forma en que este aficionado tejano “sabía dibujar el estado de ánimo y la emoción, y no sólo bailarines exóticos en trajes de superhéroes”. Incluso al principio de su carrera, Cassaday podía representar muchísimas emociones en tan sólo una viñeta, creando una atmósfera única, y es por eso que ese cómic dejaba de ser un simple producto de entretenimiento para convertirse en una magnífica obra de arte.

En los últimos años, he estado rastreando los primeros trabajos de Cassaday. Claro, todos sabemos lo brillante que fue en “Planetary” o “Astonishing X-Men”, y cómo ganó varias veces los premios más prestigiosos de la industria (premios Eisner, premios Eagle, etc.), pero yo quería saber de qué manera empezó. Así que por eso elegí “Union Jack”, una miniserie de 3 ejemplares co-escrita por Ben Raab y John Cassaday y, por supuesto, totalmente ilustrada por Cassaday.

Cassaday's extraordinary composition / extraordinaria composición de Cassaday

Cassaday, por supuesto, no es ajeno al subgénero vampírico, y su interés por el legado de Drácula lo motivó a ser el artista de I Am Legion (extraordinaria miniserie francesa sobre vampiros en la Segunda Guerra Mundial) y el portadista de “The Complete Dracula” de Dynamite. “Fe” (Union Jack # 2, enero de 1999) y “Destino” (Union Jack # 2, febrero de 1999) son fieles a los conceptos clásicos de Bram Stoker, pero también incluyen muchas leyendas y conjeturas históricas para justificar una premisa ya de por sí atractiva.

Union Jack resultó ser una miniserie muy interesantes, sin duda mejor que muchos de los títulos que Marvel publicaba en aquel entonces. Los personajes están bien definidos, las intrigas están bien planteadas y el malévolo Baron Blood es tan temible como antaño. Y el arte es increíble. Naturalmente, a finales de los 90s, Cassaday todavía estaba en el proceso de perfeccionar su estilo artístico, por lo que todavía faltaba una cierta sofisticación visual y su detallismo no era tan admirable como lo es actualmente. Sin embargo, un rápido vistazo a sus páginas es más que suficiente para notar lo inmensamente talentoso que era. Sus imágenes dinámicas, su sentido de la composición, su virtuosismo gráfico, todo ello es evidente; estas páginas son como un diamante en bruto que no necesita ser pulido para cautivar el ojo del espectador. Las portadas de Cassaday son icónicas y enérgicas, convirtiendo con éxito a este personaje casi desconocido en el superhéroe definitivo.

November comics / cómics de noviembre

November sure brought plenty of good surprises. Airboy comes to its irreverent conclusion (I really enjoyed it), and there were some truly interesting first issues, such as Millar’s Huck and Aaron’s Doctor Strange (in fact, the first two chapters in this new saga of the Sorcerer Supreme were a lot of fun). The Puma Blues HC is a gorgeous edition (Zulli is such an amazing artist and this is the kind of book I’ll treasure forever). The best comic of the month is The Goddamned #1 by Jason Aaron and R.M. Guéra (intense story and wonderful art: a must read!). So now, without further ado, here are November comics as per solicitations:

Hubo muchas buenas sorpresas en noviembre. “Airboy” llega a su irreverente conclusión (realmente la disfruté), y hubo algunos primeros números realmente interesantes, como “Huck” de Millar y “Doctor Strange” de Aaron (de hecho, los primeros dos capítulos de esta nueva saga del Hechicero Supremo fueron muy divertidos). El tomo en tapa dura de “The Puma Blues” HC es una edición preciosa (Zulli es un artista tan asombroso y este el tipo de libro que atesoraré para siempre). El mejor cómic del mes es “The Goddamned” #1 de Jason Aaron y R.M. Guéra (argumento intenso y arte maravilloso: ¡imprescindible!). Así que sin mayores preámbulos, aquí están los cómics de noviembre:
