Censoring Art (part 3 of 3)

As I mentioned in previous posts, the Comics Code Authority put a lot of effort in censoring Barry Windsor-Smith’s magnificent art during his run on Conan the Barbarian. My first example came from “The Dweller in the Dark” and the second one from “The Song of Red Sonja”.

However, the most blatant case of censorship comes from the pages of one of Conan’s most classic stories: “The Frost Giant’s Daughter”, which I reviewed merely 7 years ago here, describing it as “visual poetry at its purest”. Unfortunately, as readers we only had access to the censored version of this impressive visual poetry.

One of the lawyers from the Comics Code Authority sent a memo to editor Steve Englehart, formally presenting a number of objections and suggested changes in regards to Windsor-Smith’s artwork, phrases such as “enlarge drapery to cover buttocks and show drapery to indicate that there is breast covering […] Cover breasts, buttock and pubic areas extensively beyond present illustration” can be found in the memo, which is also included in the Conan the Barbarian: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus edition.

Once again, I leave you with both the original version and the Comics Code approved version, so you can compare them at your leisure.

Mi primer ejemplo vino de The Dweller in the Dark y el segundo de The Song of Red Sonja.

The Original Marvel Years Omnibus.
