Censoring Art (part 2 of 3)

Last month I wrote a post about censorship in the comic book industry back in the 70s. Although, to be more precise, I should say censorship in Marvel Comics and especially in Conan the Barbarian. I was quite pleased to see that Conan the Barbarian: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus includes several pages of Barry Windsor-Smith’s original art, which allows us to compare what he drew and what was actually published.

The Song of Red Sonja, published in Conan the Barbarian # 24 (March, 1973), “is a milestone issue. It marks the end of an era as the fruitful collaboration between Barry Windsor-Smith and Roy Thomas comes to an end. To say goodbye to the barbarian, Barry Windsor-Smith penciled, inked and colored (and even designed the lettering for the title) of this closing chapter of the saga of Conan”.

The artistic involvement of Windsor-Smith in this final issue was impressive, and he even co-plotted some of the pages. However, in any case, “Once again, the Comics Code struck Conan, requesting a larger towel for Red Sonja in panel 1 and Conan’s hands to be repositioned above the water line in panel 3”. And now after 46 years, you can see the difference between both versions!

El mes pasado escribí sobre la censura en la industria del cómic en los 70s. Aunque, para ser más precisos, debería decir censura en Marvel Comics y especialmente en Conan the Barbarian. Me complació ver que Conan the Barbarian: The Original Years Marvel Omnibus incluye varias páginas del arte original de Barry Windsor-Smith, lo que nos permite comparar lo que dibujó y lo que realmente se publicó.

Conan the Barbarian: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus 1

I was eagerly awaiting the release of the first volume of Conan the Barbarian: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus. Like all Marvel omnibus editions, this extra sized hardcover book is a joy to behold. In this volume we can find the legendary run of Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith, as I have explained many times, I consider this British artist the best in his generation, and if I had to choose one name as the most talented representative of the 70s decade that name would be, without any doubts, Barry Windsor-Smith.

Conan the Barbarian The Original Marvel Years Omnibus 

Of course, since I’m such a huge fan of Windsor-Smith, I had already acquired his entire run on Conan a few years ago, when the estate of Robert E. Howard had decided to give the rights to Conan to Dark Horse Comics. In fact, and I include this as anecdotal information, the first time I purchased something from DCBS, back in 2006, I decided to get the trade paperback edited by Dark Horse which included the first issues of this run.

However, as it happens with the reedition of old material, there is always room for debate about what is the best form to present it. Personally, I think that editors should concentrate in restoring colors but not alter them. In Dark Horse, however, they had a different way of doing things and they decided to come up with a remastered edition that changed all the colors. In the process, the magnificent color palette which Windsor-Smith did himself after the first issues (at some point the British artist was effectively penciling, inking, coloring and sometimes lettering the entire comic) was forever lost. Or so I thought. Editor Cory Sedlmeier and restoration expert Michael Kelleher decided to bring back Conan’s original colors.

Although it would be interesting to talk about all the changes that you could find between Marvel’s original comics and Dark Horse reprints, I’ll choose just one example: the snow lion from “Lair of the Beast-Men!” (Conan the Barbarian # 2). I had read this story a long time and I perfectly remembered that the snow lion, as the name indicates, had white fur to serve as camouflage in the snow. In Dark Horse the made the terrible mistake of recoloring the lion so it looks like a typical lion that you’d see in the zoo, you can check Dark Horse's coloring here:

 Dark Horse also omitted the covers. Fortunately, Marvel has recovered all of this material plus many amazing extras. As soon as I saw the omnibus announced, I decided to get rid of Dark Horse’s reprints. For true Conan fans, this omnibus edition is the best way to have access to one of the best runs in comic book history!

Estaba esperando con impaciencia el lanzamiento del primer volumen de Conan the Barbarian: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus. Como todas las ediciones omnibus de Marvel, este gran tomo de tapa dura se ve extraordinario. En este volumen podemos encontrar la legendaria etapa de Roy Thomas y Barry Windsor-Smith, como he explicado muchas veces, considero a este artista británico como el mejor de su generación, y si tuviera que elegir a alguien como el representante más talentoso de la década de los 70s ese nombre sería, sin duda alguna, Barry Windsor-Smith.

Original colors

Por supuesto, como soy un gran fan de Windsor-Smith, ya había adquirido toda su etapa en Conan hace unos años, cuando los herederos de Robert E. Howard habían decidido darle los derechos de Conan a Dark Horse Comics. De hecho, e incluyo esto como información anecdótica, la primera vez que compré algo de DCBS, en 2006, decidí obtener el tomo recopilatorio editado por Dark Horse, que incluía los primeros números de esta etapa.

Sin embargo, como sucede con la reedición de material antiguo, siempre hay debate sobre cuál es la mejor forma de presentarlo. Personalmente, creo que los editores deberían concentrarse en restaurar los colores pero no alterarlos. En Dark Horse, sin embargo, tenían una forma diferente de hacer las cosas y decidieron crear una edición modernizada cambiando todos los colores. En el proceso, se perdió la magnífica paleta de colores que el mismo Windsor-Smith había elaborado (en efecto, en algún momento, él estuvo a cargo del dibujo a lápiz, la tinta, el coloreado y, a veces, el rotulado de todo el cómic). Pir suerte, el editor Cory Sedlmeier y el experto en restauración Michael Kelleher decidieron recuperar los colores originales de Conan.

Aunque sería interesante hablar de todos los cambios que podríamos encontrar entre los cómics originales de Marvel y las reimpresiones de Dark Horse, elegiré sólo un ejemplo: el león de las nieves de "La guarida de los hombres-bestia" (Conan the Barbarian # 2). Había leído esta historia hace mucho tiempo y recordaba perfectamente que el león de las nieves, como su nombre lo indica, tenía un pelaje blanco que le servía de camuflaje en la nieve. Dark Horse también omitió las portadas. Afortunadamente, Marvel ha recuperado todo este material y muchos extras sorprendentes. Tan pronto como vi el ómnibus anunciado, decidí deshacerme de las reimpresiones de Dark Horse. Para los verdaderos fanáticos de Conan, esta edición es la mejor manera de tener acceso a una de las mejores etapas en la historia del cómic.

March Comics / Cómics de marzo

March was great not only because of spring break but also because of the amazing comics I got. First of all, I wanted to talk about Marvel’s Conan the Barbarian Omnibus, a beautiful edition with the entire Barry Windsor-Smith run! Fantastic Four and Thor were good, but Invaders was better. Conan the Barbarian # 4 was surprising, definitely the best one in the series so far. Oliver and Die are among the best this month, but if I had to choose my favorite comic, then it would be the first issue of Spider-Man: Life Story. And now without further ado here are March comics as per solicitations:

Marzo fue un mes estupendo no solamente por las vacaciones de primavera sino también por los asombrosos cómics que recibí. Antes que nada, quería hablar de Conan the Barbarian Omnibus de Marvel, una preciosa edición con toda la etapa de Barry Windsor-Smith. Fantastic Four y Thor van bien, pero Invaders estuvo mejor. Conan the Barbarian # 4 fue sorprendente, el mejor de la serie hasta ahora. Oliver y Die estuvieron entre lo mejor del mes, pero si tuviera que elegir, mi cómic favorito del mes sería el primer número de Spider-Man: Life Story.
