2022 Comic Books: Arion's Achievement Awards

I never get tired of reading comics and that remains as one of my favorite activities. Once a month I get my package of comics and it’s always a thrill to get them out, selecting which ones I’ll read first. I don’t really need to celebrate Christmas because I get a small tasting of it on a monthly basis, so what else could I possibly ask for? 

Every month more than 300 different titles are published in the American market, in addition to an equal amount of trade paperbacks and hardcovers. Of course, some are forgettable, but others challenge our imagination and reignite the spark of our curiosity. My purpose here is to highlight those works that have, indeed, inspired me. So, without further ado, I invite you all to the twelfth annual edition of the AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards).

When remembering our feelings, the most intense ones are the ones that stay with us. But can we make others experience anything similar to what we hold dear in our memories? I think only extraordinary writers are capable of doing that. And when we read their stories something inside of us is awakened. There are 3 excellent writers on my 2022 list: James Tynion IV for his suspenseful and yet humanizing portrayal of friendship on the throes of global apocalypse in “The Nice House on the Lake”, Christa Faust for her rather audacious and controversial “Hit Me” and Matt Kindt for his revival of “Mind MGMT: Bootleg”.

I grew up surrounded by art, and that has helped me identity the true masters of pencil & inks. Of course, learning to draw has become very useful when I have to judge the artistic skills of others. 3 artists have exceled during the past 12 months and I think a reward is only fair: Carlos Pacheco for his beautiful and captivating sequences on “Arrowsmith: Behind Enemy Lines”, Liam Sharp for his experimental approach in “Starhenge: Dragon & Boar” and Farel Dalrymple for his quirky and bold take on “Mind MGMT: Bootleg”. 

The sacred duty of a cover is simple: it has to be aesthetically superior to all other covers. The first thing we look at when holding a comic is the cover, and it has to be catchy, it has to be gorgeous. It isn’t easy to come across great covers on a monthly basis, but some artists have pleasantly surprised me with their output: Mike Allred for his excellent covers on “X-Cellent” (pardon the pun) and “Superman: Space Age”; Geof Darrow for his exquisitely detailed artwork for “Shaolin Cowboy: Cruel to be Kin”; and Travis Moore, with his adorable cover for “DC Pride: Tim Drake Special”.

Some fans don’t pay attention to editors, but they work 24/7 to provide us with the best possible comics. In this case the award goes to Nick Lowe (Marvel Comics) for remastering and finally releasing (after a wait of years) the superb  Neil Gaiman’s “Miracleman: The Silver Age”.

After reading so many comics this year, it became really difficult to decide which one was the best. So I’ve considered only those published in 2022. So the 2022 Arion’s Achievement Award for Best Single Issue goes to Astro City: That Was Then, a heartbreaking issue about teenage heroes and the ever elusive search for identity.

“Miracleman: The Silver Age” is the best ongoing series of the year (although technically it was the best ongoing series of 1991, but with all the added new material, I decided it qualifies as a 2022 comic). Neil Gaiman's contemporary classic is absolutely fascinating, and this is only getting started.

There have been many fabulous miniseries like Lovesick, Batman: Fortress, The X-Cellent, Starhenge: Dragon & Boar, Mind MGMT: Bootleg or Arrowsmith: Behind Enemy Lines but the prize goes to The Human Target, thanks to the creative exploits of the talented Tom King. 

When I started with my nominations for New Series I immediately realized how many amazing first issues I had read. I loved Love Everlasting, Superman: Space Age and Hit Me, but this award cannot be shared. So the one and only Best New Series is Shaolin Cowboy: Cruel to be Kin. 

Captain Britain Omnibus deserves as many praises as possible. It certainly is the Best Archival Collection / Reprint I bought this year. It’s nice to see Marvel is finally reprinting Alan Moore’s Captain Britain along with everything else, a decade after the previous omnibus. 

In my opinion AWA (Artists • Writers • Artisans) has really been trying to push the envelope, and with groundbreaking series like Hit Me, in addition to many others, it is publishing an amazing selection of titles so it deserves to be the best publisher of 2022. 

There are many interesting and informative websites about comics, but only a few are as fun as ComicBookHerald.com I’m always delighted by their reading guides and other interesting articles.

2022 is also a sad year: We lost more creators in the past 12 months than ever before. Now it’s our time to say goodbye to some of the most brilliant writers and artists. I’ll start with George Pérez, a symbol of excellence in the comic book industry and an artist that remained at the top of his game for decades, never losing his grace, his loves for details and those absolutely amazing Pérez panels with literally hundreds of superheroes; he’ll be deeply missed. Alan Grant was the genius mind behind most of my favorite childhood characters such as Judge Dredd, Sam Slade Robo-Hunter, Strontium Dog and many others; after working in 2000AD he also became famous in the US thanks to his work on Batman. I enjoyed so much all of his comics, and now the thought that he won’t be writing anything else saddens me deeply. Neal Adams was a legend in the field, and his contributions go beyond groundbreaking runs on Batman and Green Lantern / Green Arrow, he was a courageous activist always defending the rights of comic book creators, every man and woman making comics in the US today has a great debt with Neal Adams, a true hero who supported creators more than anyone else. French artist Jean-Claude Mézières is especially famous for co-creating Valérian (which was turned into a movie in 2017), a true giant among his incredibly talented colleagues, the death of Mézières marks a time of mourning for all of his fans, regardless of their continent of origin. Trained in 2000AD “the galaxy’s greatest comic”, Kevin O’Neill worked for some of the most acclaimed British writers, including Alan Moore, we’ll all miss his unique style and his passion for the 9th art. Carlos Pacheco came from Spain and he quickly became one of the most important artists in DC and Marvel, I’ve always loved his elegant style, always full of movement and energy; diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Pacheco was a warrior to the end, even when he knew he couldn’t win against such a terrible condition. Garry Leach was an outstanding British artist, I’ve always felt so much admiration for his clean and precise lines, for his vibrant pages full of details, a master of illustration techniques and great at creating haunting atmospheres, Leach’s more famous work was in the pages of Miracleman with Alan Moore. Tim Sale has always been an extremely popular American artist, and many of his stories have been the favorites of an entire generation. Tom Palmer was a fantastic inker who worked in Marvel for decades. Tom Veitch was a very original writer, someone more famous for his own creations than for working with established characters, unfortunately he was a victim of Covid 19. Brian Augustyn marveled readers as both a writer and an editor, and he was responsible for many well remembered runs, especially in DC Comics. 

And thus 2022 cometh to an end. Speak, speak now, reader. If thou art not as unkind as a Vaudeville villain then, by all means, unsheathe thy tongue. Thou shall not be arrested by modestly discourse, come forth and pray tell us what is on thy mind lest you wish to incur in the wrath of the keeper of this tavern, ensconced in yonder and ethereal realms.

I bid thee farewell and long live the ninth art!

Nunca me canso de leer cómics y esa sigue siendo una de mis actividades favoritas. Una vez al mes recibo mi paquete de historietas y siempre es emocionante abrirlo, y seleccionar cuáles leeré primero. Realmente no necesito celebrar Navidad porque ya cuento con esta pequeña degustación mensual, entonces, ¿qué más podría pedir?

Cada mes se publican más de 300 títulos diferentes en el mercado estadounidense, además de una cantidad igual de tomos recopilatorios y tomos en tapa dura. Por supuesto, algunos son olvidables, pero otros desafían nuestra imaginación y vuelven a encender la chispa de nuestra curiosidad. Mi propósito aquí es resaltar aquellas obras que, de hecho, me han inspirado. Así que, sin más preámbulos, los invito a todos a la duodécima edición anual de los AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards).

Al recordar nuestros sentimientos, los más intensos son los que se quedan con nosotros. Pero, ¿podemos hacer que otros experimenten algo similar a lo que apreciamos en nuestros recuerdos? Creo que sólo los escritores extraordinarios son capaces de hacer eso. Y cuando leemos sus historias algo dentro de nosotros se despierta. Hay 3 excelentes escritores en mi lista de 2022: James Tynion IV por su interpretación llena de suspenso y, sin embargo, humanizadora de la amistad en medio del apocalipsis global en "The Nice House on the Lake", Christa Faust por su bastante audaz y controversial "Hit Me" y Matt Kindt por su retorno a “Mind MGMT: Bootleg”.

Crecí rodeada de arte, y eso me ha ayudado a identificar a los verdaderos maestros del lápiz y las tintas. El deber sagrado de una portada es simple: tiene que ser estéticamente superior a todas las demás portadas. Lo primero que miramos cuando sujetamos un cómic es la portada, y tiene que llamar la atención, tiene que ser hermosa. No es fácil encontrar grandes portadas mensualmente, pero algunos artistas me han sorprendido gratamente con su producción: Mike Allred por sus excelentes portadas de “X-Cellent” (perdón por el juego de palabras) y “Superman: Space Age”; Geof Darrow por su obra de arte exquisitamente detallada para “Shaolin Cowboy: Cruel to be Kin”; y Travis Moore, con su adorable portada de “DC Pride: Tim Drake Special”.

Algunos fans no prestan atención a los editores, pero ellos trabajan las 24 horas del día, los 7 días de la semana para brindarnos los mejores cómics posibles. En este caso, el premio es para Nick Lowe (Marvel Comics) por remasterizar y finalmente publicar (después de una espera de años) el soberbio “Miracleman: The Silver Age” de Neil Gaiman.

Después de leer tantos cómics este año, se volvió realmente difícil decidir cuál era el mejor. Así que he considerado sólo los publicados en el 2022. Por lo tanto, el premio Arion's Achievement Award al mejor número único del 2022 va para Astro City: That Was Then, un episodio desgarrador sobre héroes adolescentes y la búsqueda siempre esquiva de la identidad.

“Miracleman: The Silver Age” es la mejor serie mensual del año (aunque técnicamente fue la mejor serie mensual de 1991, pero con todo el material nuevo agregado, decidí que califica como un cómic del 2022). Captain Britain Omnibus merece tantos elogios como sea posible. Sin duda es la mejor obra coleccionada / reimpresión de archivo que compré este año. Es bueno ver que Marvel finalmente está reimprimiendo el Captain Britain de Alan Moore junto con todo lo demás, una década después del ómnibus anterior.

En mi opinión, AWA (Artists • Writers • Artisans) realmente ha estado tratando de ir más allá, y con series innovadoras como Hit Me, además de muchas otras, está publicando una asombrosa selección de títulos, por lo que merece ser la mejor editorial del 2022.

Tim Sale siempre ha sido un artista estadounidense extremadamente popular y muchas de sus historias han sido las favoritas de toda una generación. Tom Palmer fue un entintador fantástico que trabajó en Marvel durante décadas. Tom Veitch fue un escritor muy original, alguien más famoso por sus propias creaciones que por trabajar con personajes establecidos, lamentablemente fue víctima del Covid 19. Brian Augustyn maravilló a los lectores como escritor y editor, y fue responsable de muchas etapas muy bien recordadas, especialmente en DC Comics.

 
Y así el 2022 llega a su final. Hablad, hablad ahora, lectores. Si no sois tan malvados como un villano de Vodevil entonces, por todos los medios, desenvainad vuestra lengua. No seáis arrestados por discursos modestos, venid al frente y decidnos lo que está en vuestra mente a menos que oséis incurrir en la ira del dueño de esta taberna, escondida allende los reinos etéreos.
