My trip to Europe ended in July but I didn’t have enough time to read comics until now. Batman: Dark Age continues to impress me. Blood Squad Seven keeps getting better with every issue. And Animal Pound was amazing. Fantastic Four and Get Fury are very good. But the best comic of the month was, definitely, The Nice House by the Sea, a sequel to the remarkable The Nice House on the Lake. And now, without further ado, here are July comics as per solicitations: 

ANIMAL POUND #4

(W) Tom King (A/CA) Peter Gross. Piggy the dog reigns in a dictatorial role, instating a system of brutality and death, a meatgrinder of hierarchy that there is no escape from. When two groups of animals work together to try and put a stop to this, will their efforts be enough to prevent Piggy's third term?

BATMAN DARK AGE #4 

(W) Mark Russell (A/CA) Michael Allred. Batman's world begins to grow as the people of Gotham realize they only need a costume to justify their problematic behavior. June Comic Books / Cómics de junio

Since I was traveling around Europe in June, it’s only now that I had the chance to read comic books from that month. I was thrilled to receive The Complete Web of Horror, an impressive hardcover edition reprinting classic horror stories from the late 60s as well as never before seen material. Get Fury and Fantastic Four continue to surprise me. And Batman Dark Age was great! The conclusion of Avengers Twilight was good. Doom was quite an enthralling one-shot. But if I had to choose my favorite comic of the month, that would be Blood Squad Seven # 1. A very promising new series. And now, without further ado, here are June comics as per solicitations: 

AVENGERS TWILIGHT #6

Como estuve viajando por Europa en junio, recién ahora tuve la oportunidad de leer los cómics de dicho mes. Me encantó recibir The Complete Web of Horror, una impresionante edición de tapa dura que reimprime historias clásicas de terror de fines de los 60s, así como material nunca antes visto. Get Fury y Fantastic Four siguen sorprendiéndome. ¡Y Batman Dark Age estuvo estupendo! La conclusión de Avengers Twilight estuvo bien. Doom fue un one-shot bastante atrayente. August films / películas de agosto

After 6 years in California, I finally said goodbye to the Golden State and I managed to watch new (and old) productions. Let’s start with The Idea of You (2024), a romantic comedy directed by Michael Showalter, that dares to step outside the usual genre boundaries to inquire if a relationship could work between Anne Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada), a 40-year-old woman, and Nicholas Galitzine (famous for his role as a gay prince in Red, White & Royal Blue), a younger man in his 20s. Despite the age difference, they both feel attracted to each other, and more importantly, there’s real love. However, social pressure will be too much for the couple. An older man could surely get away with dating younger women, but when an older woman dates a younger guy then the entire society is against her. In a straightforward and unassuming way, the film legitimizes the true power of romantic connection while asking important questions about what society views as appropriate in terms of age. Surprisingly captivating and full of emotion, The Idea of You is a refreshing reinterpretation of romantic comedies. 

In Doug Liman’s Road House (2024), Jake Gyllenhaal (famous for his role as a gay man in Brokeback Mountain) is former wrestler that clings to his old days of glory. An amazing fighter, even now that he has been forcibly retired, he can still instill fear in the hearts of his opponents. That’s the reason why the owner of Road House, a bar in Florida, comes looking for him, to keep away the hordes of belligerent costumers that besiege the watering hole. Although it’s fascinating to see Gyllenhaal kick the hell out of every local hoodlum, it’s also interesting to understand why ended up unemployed in such a bad situation. This is a remake of an 80s movie of the same title, and even if I haven’t seen the original one I must say I really enjoyed this new version, which is full of action, great fight sequences and even moments of humor. The cast includes Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen and Lukas Gage (The White Lotus).

Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021) is a strange experiment. After the disappointing Justice League movie from 2017 which was initiated by Zack Snyder and completed by Joss Whedon, Warner Brothers decided to release the ‘director’s cut’, of that movie. Clocking in over 4 hours of length, this version of Justice League sure shows a lot more about the character’s backgrounds. A bunch of the extra material feels superfluous, for example, the appearance of the Martian Manhunter, as he basically does nothing except showing up when he isn’t needed and completely disappearing when the Justice League was desperate for more manpower. Snyder comes up with a few good moments, but overall, I think this 4-hour version doesn’t do any justice to what a Justice League film could be.

Justice League (2017) is the official version of the movie, as released in theaters worldwide. It’s true that when Joss Whedon took over Zack Snyder’s project, a lot of his original vision was lost. But Snyder’s vision wasn’t particularly great to begin with. So imagine a lesser version of that in the hands of Whedon. No wonder why Justice League has been considered by many as one of the most disappointing superhero movies of recent years. Of course it was great to see Ben Affleck (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Henry Cavill (Man of Steel), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Amy Adams (Arrival) and Jesse Eisenberg (Zombieland) reprising their previous roles, and pretty cool to see newcomers such as Ezra Miller (The Flash) and Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones), but this is one superhero movie I’m glad I never went to see in the movies (or I would’ve asked for a refund!).

There can be no age more difficult that adolescence. That’s clear for Niklaus Hilber, director of Amateur Teens (2015), a film that takes place in a high school in Switzerland. We see different characters acting and reacting to an age characterized by the pernicious power of social media and for the kids’ inability to simply disconnect from all of that. How can sexuality develop in a world in which everyone is constantly posting intimate pictures on different apps? Is intimacy possible when you share your personal information online with everyone? There are many relevant questions that need to be addressed, and Amateur Teens does a fine job with asking them. The answers, of course, are not provided, but then again, in the world in which we live today, sometimes there are no answers at all. The cast includes Fabrizio Borsani, Jérôme Humm and Benjamin Dangel.

Before having multimillion dollar budgets and big Hollywood superstars, Christopher Nolan was just a new filmmaker trying to leave his mark. In Memento (2000), we see all of Nolan’s characteristics: different narratives coalescing together, use of color intermingled with black and white, use of flashbacks and playing with time in general. Guy Pearce is a man with amnesia. He can’t form new memories, but he can remember what happened to him long ago. His wife was killed and he was severely injured (hence his short term memory loss). He has been looking for revenge all this time, who knows how long it has been, but now that he met Carrie-Anne Moss, a femme fatale in her own right, he discovers new clues about the identity of Joe Pantoliano, who could have been the killer he was looking for. Or is he? After all, when a man cannot make any new memories, all he can do is rely on the notes he writes and leaves for himself, on polaroids taken in a rush, and tattoos all over his body which try to map the order of events. Nolan’s absolutely brilliant script and his unique style as a director proved, 24 years ago, that he was on his way to becoming one of the greatest filmmakers ever.

Después de 6 años en California, finalmente me despedí del estado dorado y pude ver nuevas (y viejas) producciones. Empecemos por The Idea of You (2024), una comedia romántica dirigida por Michael Showalter, que se atreve a salir de los límites habituales del género para indagar si podría funcionar una relación entre Anne Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada), una mujer de 40 años, y Nicholas Galitzine (famoso por su papel como un príncipe gay en Red, White & Royal Blue), un hombre más joven de unos 20 años. A pesar de la diferencia de edad, ambos se sienten atraídos el uno por el otro y, lo que es más importante, hay amor verdadero. Sin embargo, la presión social será demasiado para la pareja. Un hombre mayor seguramente podría salir con mujeres más jóvenes, pero cuando una mujer mayor sale con un hombre más joven, entonces toda la sociedad está en su contra. De una manera sencilla y sin pretensiones, la película legitima el verdadero poder de la conexión romántica al tiempo que plantea preguntas importantes sobre lo que la sociedad considera apropiado en términos de edad. Sorprendentemente cautivadora y llena de emoción, The Idea of You es una refrescante reinterpretación de las comedias románticas.

En Road House (2024) de Doug Liman, Jake Gyllenhaal (famoso por su papel como un hombre gay en Brokeback Mountain) es un ex luchador que se aferra a sus viejos días de gloria. Un luchador asombroso que, incluso ahora que se ha retirado a la fuerza, todavía puede infundir miedo en los corazones de sus oponentes. Esa es la razón por la que la dueña de Road House, un bar en Florida, viene a buscarlo, para mantener alejadas a las hordas de clientes beligerantes que asedian el bar. Aunque es fascinante ver a Gyllenhaal patear a todos los matones locales, también es interesante entender por qué terminó desempleado en una situación tan mala. Se trata de un remake de una película de los 80s del mismo título, y aunque no he visto la original debo decir que disfruté mucho de esta nueva versión, que está llena de acción, grandes secuencias de lucha e incluso momentos de humor. El reparto incluye a Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen y Lukas Gage (The White Lotus).

Justice League de Zack Snyder (2021) es un experimento extraño. Después de la decepcionante película de Justice League de 2017 que inició Zack Snyder y completó Joss Whedon, Warner Brothers decidió lanzar la versión del director de esa película. Con más de 4 horas de duración, esta versión de la Liga de la Justicia sin duda muestra mucho más sobre los antecedentes de los personajes. Gran parte del material adicional se siente superfluo, por ejemplo, la aparición del Detective Marciano, ya que básicamente no hace nada más que aparecer cuando no es necesario y desaparecer por completo cuando la Liga de la Justicia estaba desesperada por recibir apoyo. A Snyder se le ocurren algunos buenos momentos, pero en general, creo que esta versión de 4 horas no hace justicia a lo que podría ser una película de la Liga de la Justicia.

Justice League (2017) es la versión oficial de la película, tal y como se estrenó en los cines de todo el mundo. Es cierto que cuando Joss Whedon se hizo cargo del proyecto de Zack Snyder, se perdió gran parte de su visión original. Pero la visión de Snyder no era particularmente inspirada para empezar. Así que imaginemos una versión disminuida de aquello en manos de Whedon. No es de extrañar que muchos hayan considerado a Justice League como una de las películas de superhéroes más decepcionantes de los últimos años. Por supuesto que fue genial ver a Ben Affleck (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Henry Cavill (Man of Steel), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Amy Adams (Arrival) y Jesse Eisenberg (Zombieland)  retomar sus papeles anteriores, y estupendo ver a recién llegados como Ezra Miller (The Flash) y Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones), pero esta es una película de superhéroes que me alegro de no haber ido a ver al cine (¡o habría pedido que me devuelvan el importe de la entrada!).

Hay muchas preguntas relevantes que deben abordarse, y Amateur Teens hace un buen trabajo al plantearlas. Las respuestas, por supuesto, no se proporcionan, pero, de nuevo, en el mundo en el que vivimos hoy, a veces no hay respuestas en absoluto. El reparto incluye a Fabrizio Borsani, Jérôme Humm y Benjamin Dangel.

Ha estado buscando venganza todo este tiempo, quién sabe cuánto tiempo ha pasado, pero ahora que conoció a Carrie-Anne Moss, una femme fatale por derecho propio, descubre nuevas pistas sobre la identidad de Joe Pantoliano, que podría haber sido el asesino que buscaba. ¿O no lo es? Al fin y al cabo, cuando un hombre no puede crear nuevos recuerdos, todo lo que puede hacer es confiar en las notas que escribe y deja para sí mismo, en las polaroids que se toma a toda prisa y en los tatuajes que tiene por todo el cuerpo que intentan trazar el orden de los acontecimientos. El guión absolutamente brillante de Nolan y su estilo único como director demostraron, hace 24 años, que estaba en camino a convertirse en uno de los mejores cineastas de todos los tiempos.
