Even as a busy grad student, I always find time to read comics. So every month, I’m always impatient to read something I haven’t read before or to re-read something that has been reprinted and that had been out of reach for a long time. One way or another, reading comics continues to be an important part of my life.
Like a treasure hunter, I always look for the best available titles. The selection process begins early. In fact, two months prior to the date I place my order, I’m already checking out solicitations and choosing what seems to be more promising. Then I read everything I buy and I keep in mind which titles have captivated me the most. Finally, I share my opinions with you at the end of the year, as I’m doing right now. So, without further ado, I invite you all to the 11th annual edition of the AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards).

There is power in words, there is power in sentences. Thanks to a writer’s imagination we can travel to different worlds and eras; good writing allows us to be anywhere we want. In my opinion the 2021 award for best writer should be shared by three extraordinary authors: Barry Windsor-Smith for his remarkable “Monsters” which is “one of comics' great literary epics, a masterpiece of story and art and a generous, unexpected gift from a legendary creator in total command of his craft”, and one that I’ll be reviewing in 2022. James Tynion IV for his uniquely intense and emotionally complex “The Nice House on the Lake”, truly 2021’s biggest surprise; Ed Piskor for his controversial “Red Room”.
Comics can be a superior medium because of the art. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and the logic outcome of this precept is that an artist is more valuable than anyone else: only he knows how to turn a page into a powerful visual feast, complex and captivating. I must confess that my eyes were seduced by the lines and designs of three artists: Barry Windsor-Smith for his “achingly good, epically scaled, and impeccably designed” pages in “Monsters”, after drawing Conan 50 years ago, Windsor-Smith continues to be simply the best; Álvaro Martínez Bueno for the wonderful artwork in “The Nice House on the Lake”; and finally Steve McNiven for his homage to Barry Windsor-Smith in “King-Size Conan”.
Covers are designed to grab the reader’s attention. They can be beautiful and seductive, or visceral and impressive or simply unconventional. Either way, with hundreds of comics published each month, a cover needs to shine. The most magnificent covers of 2021 were done by Kaare Andrews (“Amazing Fantasy”), Salvador Larroca (“Doctor Doom”) and Steve McNiven (“Captain America Tribute”).
Editors don’t usually get as much credit as they deserve, but they are an essential part of the publishing process. This time the award goes to Gary Groth, for contributing to Fantagraphics’ greatest new graphic novel: “Monsters”.
I read so many comics each year that sometimes it can be difficult to keep track of them. Fortunately, some of them stay with me long after I’ve finished reading them. The best single issue I read in 2021 is The Nice House on the Lake # 6, a story about adults trapped in a lake house who have very different memories of their teenage years in Milwaukee, when they were coming to terms with their alternative sexualities.
When I read my first Red Room comic by Ed Piskor I was immediately a fan. Now I want to every Red Room comic ever published, and although this is technically a ‘series of miniseries’, it is still an ongoing according to my own definitions, so bear with me.

There were plenty of amazing miniseries such as “Echolands”, “Batman Reptilian”, “Fantastic Four Life Story”, “What’s the Furthest Place From Here?”, “Space Bastards”. Nonetheless, the best limited series of 2021 is, without a doubt, “The Nice House on the Lake”.
I always have high expectations whenever I read something new. And even if Monsters isn’t a series but rather a graphic novel, it’s still new so, once again, bear with me. “Monsters” is the best new series of 2021; author Barry Windsor-Smith has created a true masterpiece. The best I’ve read in many years.
Originally published in black and white, IDW put out a Master Edition of Alan Moore’s “From Hell” in color for the first time. And it’s absolutely stunning. Certainly, this is my favorite acquisition of 2021.
After evaluating several publishers, I’ve decided to reward Fantagraphics for all the superb titles they’ve been publishing lately such as “Monsters” and “Red Room”.
I had mentioned before that every year more and more comic book websites disappear. 2021 was the last year of Comixology Submit (http://submit.comixology.com/) the best online place for independent creators like me to have their comics published. After Amazon acquired Comixology in 2014, everyone knew there would be changes to the Submit program, but instead of changes what we see now is Amazon getting rid of it completely, leaving me and hundreds, even thousands, of creators with very limited options to display our works.
Talent never dies. That’s why, in 2021, we remember 9 extraordinary men who dedicated their lives to produce the most amazing comics: John Paul Leon, a talented artist revered by fans and pros alike, and a creator responsible for many tremendously popular titles, lost his battle against cancer. Steve Lightle’s art was always beautiful, and it doesn’t matter how long its been, looking at any of his Legion of Super-Heroes covers will always fill me with joy, when I found out he passed away, I felt deeply sad. We also say goodbye to prolific Paraguayan comic book author Robin Wood, the man behind Nippur de Lagash and many other classics that I read many years ago. Among the departed are also magnificent artist Ryan Bodenheim (whose Halcyon Image series I’m reading right now) and popular writer Pat McGreal (famous for his brilliant Chiaroscuro series for Vertigo). Sadly, the pandemic isn’t over and Covid has taken the lives of more than one comic book creator this year, such as David Anthony Kraft (whose constant work for Marvel garnered him many fans), Mexican Francisco Gerardo Haghenbeck, Brazilian Robson Rocha and Filipino Jeffrey Huet.

No importa lo ocupado que esté con el doctorado, siempre encuentro tiempo para leer cómics. Así que cada mes, estoy siempre impaciente por leer algo que no he leído antes o por releer algo que ha sido reimpreso o que había sido difícil de encontrar por mucho tiempo. De un modo u otro, leer cómics continúa siendo una parte importante de mi vida.
Como un buscador de tesoros, siempre estoy pendiente de los mejores títulos. El proceso de selección empieza temprano. Hay poder en las palabras, hay poder en las frases. Gracias a la imaginación de un escritor, podemos viajar a diferentes mundos y épocas; una buena escritura nos permite estar en cualquier lugar que deseemos. En mi opinión, el premio del 2021 al mejor escritor debería ser compartido por tres autores extraordinarios: Barry Windsor-Smith por su notable “Monsters”, que es “una de las grandes epopeyas literarias de los cómics, una obra maestra de la historia y el arte, y un generoso e inesperado regalo de un creador legendario en total dominio de su oficio”, y uno que estaré reseñando el 2022. James Tynion IV por su excepcionalmente intensa y emocionalmente compleja “The Nice House on the Lake”, verdaderamente la mayor sorpresa del 2021; Ed Piskor por su controversial “Red Room”.
Si los cómics pueden ser un medio superior es por el arte. El arte de Steve Lightle siempre fue hermoso, y no importa cuánto tiempo haya pasado, mirar cualquiera de sus portadas de Legion of Super-Heroes siempre me llenará de alegría, cuando descubrí que falleció, me sentí profundamente triste. También nos despedimos del prolífico autor de cómics paraguayo Robin Wood, el hombre detrás de Nippur de Lagash y muchos otros clásicos que leí hace muchos años. Entre los fallecidos se encuentran también el magnífico artista Ryan Bodenheim (cuya serie Halcyon de Image estoy leyendo ahora mismo) y el popular escritor Pat McGreal (famoso por su brillante serie Chiaroscuro para Vértigo).
