Why is Old Man Logan considered the best Wolverine story of the decade? Well, for starters it is one of the best examples of intelligent writing and extraordinarily beautiful art coexisting in perfect harmony. Writer and artist have achieved such a powerful rapport that everything flows naturally. This is no easy feat, after all, most of the time one of the aspects overcomes the other, if the writing is too good then the art looks bland, and when the art is excellent then the writing looks uninspired. It happens all the time, really. This is an art, after all, and part of the art consists in finding the right creative team for a specific project.

Mark Millar and Steve McNiven had worked before in the best-selling Marvel event ‘Civil War’. There, McNiven’s pages had been impeccably executed; clean lines and a very kinetic approach to movement reinforced his status as a super star in the comic industry. Some of his previous works include Bendis New Avengers, where he had already proved that he was a force to be reckoned with (artistically speaking).

However, Steve McNiven kept improving with each new project. Civil War was better than New Avengers. And Old Man Logan was even better. Sometime I imagine that Millar and McNiven challenged each other: one of them would write the best Wolverine story and the other would provide the best illustrations of the decade; and that challenge (if it ever existed) sure paid off.
Ultron 8 |
Millar had envisioned a saga in which America was no longer the land of freedom but rather a derelict country, rotten to the core. In this scenario people would gather in coliseums to watch how dinosaurs (illegally imported from the Savage Land) would eat innocent men; old villainous creations such as Ultron 8 would look like a role model compared to the rest of the ‘civilization’; constant wars between small time crooks trying to become kings of the neighborhood would be the one and only rule; ancient foes, such as the Moloids, would now be the Earth’s immune system, literally devouring one demolished city after another. Not only America, but every country and continent on Earth would be in ruins, and amongst all the wreckage, one old man would try to return to his family to live peacefully ever after.

How do you translate all that into images? By hammering out the BEST work of your career. That’s why Steve McNiven was the perfect man for this job. From the very beginning, it’s obvious how much effort he put into the designs of this dreadful future. In my previous post there are two penciled versions for the first two pages. The first one would fit in any western related publication, but it’s the second version the one that proves how great an artist McNiven can be. The second one is a true fruit of imagination: an abandoned oil pipe, hand-made solar panels, etc. There is no need for words, the world as it is can be seen and understood by just one frame. That’s the genius of McNiven, he can make us realize how this new world works with just a few images.
Spider-Buggy |
There is also much of formal experimentation in Steve McNiven’s work. From clear and succinct lines in Civil War, here he adds much depth and volume using double hatching and cross hatching, a technique that requires a certain amount of patience. I’ve tried to do something similar in a few of my drawings, but eventually I get tired and I go for a quick finish. Another interesting approach is what might be referred as semi double page spreads. A typical double page takes, evidently, the entire space of both pages. Here, McNiven changes that a bit, by taking roughly ¾ of the double page spread, and using the remaining space for smaller frames or credits (check out the Hulk gang image, the Spider-Buggy breaking through a wall, etc.).

Movement & dynamism / movimiento y dinamismo |

Y Old Man Logan es todavía mejor.
