August films / películas de agosto

Unlike other months, I actually managed to go to the Regal Cinema in Davis and I saw Quentin Tarantino’s latest film Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood (2019), and I really enjoyed it. Tarantino envisioned it as his love letter to the Hollywood of the late 60s, and through several independent stories, the legendary filmmaker certainly captures the zeitgeist of that era. The main story revolves around Rick Dalton, an actor that used to be popular and now feels as if he’s not nearly as famous or relevant, Dalton is magnificently played by Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant), and there are some really unique and intense scenes that, thanks to DiCaprio’s talent, immediately become unforgettable; at all times, Dalton is accompanied by his stunt double, portrayed by Brad Pitt (Burn After Reading). The chemistry between the two famous actors is amazing, and the success of the film relies on that. Other outstanding characters are the ones played by Margot Robbie (Focus) and Emile Hirsch (Just Jim). The rest of the cast is absolutely impressive: Austin Butler, Bruce Dern, Luke Perry, Al Pacino, etc. Still, it feels like an unusual movie for Tarantino, but then again, defying the expectations of viewers is what all creator must do at some point. It may not be my favorite Tarantino movie but it’s already included in my list of the top 10 productions of 2019.

Jon Watts directs Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Homecoming) returns as everyone’s favorite arachnid hero! I really liked the idea of a high school trip through Europe, there are amazing locations and some very special places, which are constantly under attack by strange creatures that can only be defeated by the power of Mysterio, wonderfully played by Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler). I think the romantic sequences between the characters are sweet and endearing, but probably the best about this movie is the interaction between the protagonist and Mysterio. The cast includes Samuel L. Jackson, Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau and Cobie Smulders. This is the first Marvel production without Stan Lee, but at least there is a cameo of J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson.

  1. I was psyched to see JK Simmons return as JJJ but the Marvel/Sony breakup is going to throw a monkeywrench in that.
