I spent half of July traveling around Europe, but fortunately I had time to watch a couple of films. Let’s start with Dune: Part 2 (2024), Denis Villeneuve’s sequel based on Frank Herbert’s novel. Timothée Chalamet (Dune) reprises his role as Paul Atreides, who is finally embracing his role as Lisan al Gaib, a messianic figure that everyone in Arrakis is familiar with. Continuing the events from Dune, now we see Atreides becoming a confident leader, while his mother, Rebecca Ferguson (Life), is rediscovering her new role as an influential religious figure. Josh Brolin (Gangster Squad), the last man loyal to house Atreides reappears in the nick of time; Javier Bardem (Love in the Time of Cholera) tries his best to convince others that Atreides is, in fact, Lisan al Gaib. with Stellan Skarsgård is desperate to kill Atreides, and so he summons the most lethal warrior of house Harkonnen, Austin Butler (Elvis). The confrontation between the two young men will be brutal and merciless. In the end, even Charlotte Rampling and the entire order of the Bene Gesserit are caught by surprise. The sequel to Dune is a fascinating exploration of power, in a literal way, in a religious way and in a political way; constant plots and schemes lay the path for a journey full of intense and extraordinary moments, moments in which the characters will have to completely redefine themselves in order to survive. Once again Villeneuve proves his talent as a filmmaker and his admiration and respect towards to works of Frank Herbert. Definitely one of the best films of 2024.
Timothée Chalamet (famous for his role as a gay teenager in Call Me By Your Name) is a young Wonka (2023), in this movie directed by Paul King and inspired by Roald Dahl's book. Before the chocolate factory, Willy Wonka was a naïve and goodhearted young man who had only one ambition in life: to create the world’s most delicious chocolate. Here we get to see the challenges he must face, as well as the ferocious competition of well-established chocolatiers who do not see with gentle eyes the newcomer’s plans. Although Wonka is a fun movie, I also think it’s problematic in the way it condones the crimes of the wealthy businessmen. Now I would never have an issue with in a production for adults, but since this is geared towards children it does seem counterproductive to indoctrinate them with an idea of a world in which corruption and illegal behaviors are more rewarded than criticized.
George Clooney’s The Boys in the Boat (2023) is based on real life events. When coach Joel Edgerton (The King) starts recruiting new athletes for the rowing team of University of Washington, he discovers strength and motivation in the young men that are now in the team, especially student Callum Turner (Green Room). All the young men in this team come from poor families, they have no money and yet, they have an undefeatable attitude and a unique strength. It’s 1936, and the team has the possibility of participating in the Olympics in Berlin. Clooney does a good job in adapting Daniel James Brown’s book, and the historical reconstruction is great. However, the movie does tend to be quite conventional in many aspects, and that takes away from its inspirational message.
Anatomie d’une chute (2023), directed by Justine Triet, is a dramatic take on adult relationships, and why they seem doomed to fail. Sandra Hüller is a German writer married to French musician Samuel Theis, they live together with their son, Milo Machado-Graner, an 11-year-old boy who is blind. On the surface, they’re a happy family, but when the husband turns up dead, mere feet away from their chalet, his death is instantly considered suspicious. Did he accidentally fall? Did he commit suicide? Or was he murdered? Soon, a trial begins, and Hüller, the wife, is extensively interrogated about the nature of her marriage. Slowly but surely, we get to see the tension, the drama, the pain, the yelling, the fighting and the unhappiness that is always a part of a marriage, and yet, we also get to see a glimpse of hope, rare moments when husband and wife seem to be content. The key witness of the trial is the son, however, his blindness makes it difficult for the jury to determine what he could actually witness. He didn’t ‘see’ anything, but he heard a lot. Triet’s film is a powerful, unapologetic and visceral exploration of what it means to be in a relationship. The trial is just the pretext to dissect a corpse that had already been rotting for a long time. Brilliant film. Definitely one of the best ones from 2023.

Empecemos con Dune: Part 2 (2024), la secuela de Denis Villeneuve basada en la novela de Frank Herbert. Timothée Chalamet (Dune) retoma su papel de Paul Atreides, quien finalmente acepta su papel de Lisan al Gaib, una figura mesiánica con la que todos en Arrakis están familiarizados. Continuando con los acontecimientos de Dune, ahora vemos a Atreides convertirse en un líder lleno de confianza, mientras que su madre, Rebecca Ferguson (Life), está redescubriendo su nuevo papel como una figura religiosa influyente. Josh Brolin (Gangster Squad), el último hombre leal a la casa Atreides, reaparece justo a tiempo; Javier Bardem (Love in the Time of Cholera) hace todo lo posible para convencer a los demás de que Atreides es, de hecho, Lisan al Gaib. Antes de la fábrica de chocolate, Willy Wonka era un joven ingenuo y de buen corazón que sólo tenía una ambición en la vida: crear el chocolate más delicioso del mundo. Aquí podemos ver los desafíos que debe enfrentar, así como la feroz competencia de chocolateros consagrados que no ven con ojos amables los planes del recién llegado. Aunque Wonka es una película divertida, también creo que es problemática por la forma en que tolera los crímenes de los empresarios ricos. Ahora bien, nunca tendría problemas en una producción para adultos, pero como está dirigida a niños parece contraproducente adoctrinarlos con la idea de un mundo en el que la corrupción y los comportamientos ilegales son más recompensados que criticados.
The Boys in the Boat (2023), de George Clooney, se basa en hechos de la vida real. Cuando el entrenador Joel Edgerton (The King) comienza a reclutar nuevos atletas para el equipo de remo de la Universidad de Washington, descubre fuerza y motivación en los jóvenes que ahora están en el equipo, especialmente en el estudiante Callum Turner (Green Room). Todos los jóvenes de este equipo provienen de familias muy pobres, no tienen dinero y, sin embargo, tienen una actitud invencible y una fuerza única. Es el año 1936 y el equipo tiene la posibilidad de participar en los Juegos Olímpicos de Berlín. Pronto comienza un juicio y Hüller, la esposa, es interrogada exhaustivamente sobre la naturaleza de su matrimonio. De manera lenta pero segura, llegamos a ver la tensión, el drama, el dolor, los gritos, las peleas y la infelicidad que siempre son parte de un matrimonio y, sin embargo, también podemos ver un atisbo de esperanza, momentos raros en los que marido y mujer parecen estar contentos. El testigo clave del juicio es el hijo, sin embargo, su ceguera dificulta que el jurado determine qué pudo presenciar realmente. No “vio” nada, pero escuchó mucho. La película de Triet es una exploración poderosa, sin complejos y visceral de lo que significa estar en una relación. El juicio es sólo el pretexto para diseccionar un cadáver que ya llevaba mucho tiempo pudriéndose. Una película brillante. Definitivamente una de las mejores del 2023.
