November films / películas de noviembre

November was even more international than other months… and I mean it, half of the films I saw were from Europe or Asia. But let’s start with something you’ve probably seen: Skyfall (2012), the 23rd James Bond production is directed by Sam Mendes, Daniel Craig is again Agent 007, and Judi Dench reprises her role as M, the cast also includes Javier Bardem as the villain. I haven’t seen all the James Bond movies, but I’ve seen a lot, and Skyfall is surely the best one, it combines high-octane action with a certain sense of melancholy as Bond feels he’s getting older… for the first time in decades we actually feel that this time agent 007 might lose, and the sad final scene reminds us that even our most beloved childhood heroes cannot remain as indestructible as they once were. I rarely enjoy action as a genre, but Skyfall was really outstanding. 

The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012) is written and directed by Stephen Chbosky and it is, without a doubt, one of the best films of 2012. Logan Lerman is a shy teenager that befriends Ezra Miller, a flamboyant gay boy, who introduces him to Emma Watson (Hermione from “Harry Potter”). This story combines teenage awkwardness, friendship, love and the effervescence of youth into one truly fascinating narrative that conceals some very strong themes, such as child molestation and sexual abuse. An extraordinary film that, once again, proves that Ezra Miller knows how to choose his projects ("We Need To Talk About Kevin" and "Afterschool" were also great).

Child molestation is always a controversial subject, and director John Crowley handles it very delicately in Boy A (2007) a film that begins with two lonely young boys that become friends, one of them has been raped and all his anger and repressed violence bursts out one day, thus killing a little girl. When the police capture the boys, none of them is willing to confess who killed the girl, so they’re both sent to jail. Years later, one of them, played by Andrew Garfield (famous for his role as Peter Parker in "The Amazing Spider-Man") is set free. With a new identity and in a new town, he will try to rebuild his life from scratch, but the wounds of the past may be too hard to heal. Haunting, sad and very dramatic, Boy A is magnificent cinematographic accomplishment.

Of course, no month would be complete without a couple of horror films. I saw Fright Night (2011), here Anton Yelchin is a high school student that can only think about girls, until his former best friend Christopher Mintz-Plasse tells him that his neighbor (Colin Farrell) is actually a vampire. There is a lot of humor in Fright Night and some of the best sequences include David Tennant (a great British actor that played Doctor Who for years) and there are so many hilarious dialogues, for instance, when Christopher says to Anton: "you took my Stretch Armstrong so you could tie it around your balls and jerk off for an hour". My Bloody Valentine (2009), on the other hand, was a huge let down. This is a poorly done remake starred by Jensen Ackles and Kerr Smith… I saw the original in October and it is so much better. I really enjoyed Final Destination (2000) and I’ve seen the sequels, all of them with the same style, all of them disappointing, Final Destination 5 (2011) would be no exception except for the last scene, in which we see Nicholas D'Agosto (a good actor with interesting movies such as “Rocket Science”) and his girlfriend going into the airplane that crashes in the first movie (and we even get to see Devon Sawa getting off the plane). 

I’ve been meaning to watch Sydney Pollack’s Tootsie (1982) for a while, and it is a very clever analysis on gender and heterosexual normativity; when Dustin Hoffman decides to cross-dress and pretends to be a woman to get a role in a soap opera his entire world changes, being a man can be easy, being a woman is quite hard for him. The cast includes Jessica Lange and the great Bill Murray. I’m a big fan of Jesse Eisenberg and he usually has a knack for choosing the best films (for instance, “The Squid and the Whale” which happens to be on my top 100), however The Hunting Party (2007), starred by Richard Gere and Terrence Howard has a solid premise but it isn’t as good as it could have been. Jim Jarmusch’s Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999), on the other hand, is a great story about loyalty and crime-lords in today’s world.

This time I saw movies from Spain, Italy, France and Germany, but let’s start with Antonio Mercero’s Planta 4ª (2003), a gripping tale about a group of kids fighting against cancer. The talented Juan José Ballesta is the protagonist, and we can’t help but to admire his strength and his courage, the other characters are also teenagers that have been diagnosed with cancer, and yet, they’re still rebellious and always ready to make jokes about everything (or even masturbate together while fantasizing about girls). Sigfrid Monleón’s El cónsul de Sodoma (2009) focuses on the life of Jaime Gil de Biedma (played by Jordi Mollà), one of Spain’s most important poets of the 20th century, Gil de Biedma is a successful businessman that comes from a wealthy family, everything in his life seems perfect except for two things: 1) he indulges in unproductive affairs such as poetry and 2) his homosexual encounters with men and boys are about to ruin his family’s reputation forever. Clandestinos (2007) is directed by Antonio Hens who had already done a remarkable short-film “En malas compañías”, for the second time his lead actor is Israel Rodríguez… however, there are some things about the script that didn’t convince me.
  
I saw again La vita è bella (1997) written, directed and starred by Roberto Benigni, it had been years since I saw it for the first time. I always think it’s hard to come up with upbeat stories about hope, but that’s what Benigni sets out to do. I understand that for some “Life is beautiful” can be too optimistic or even naïve, but I still consider it a charming film -although slightly demagogic- with some unforgettable sequences. Also from Italy comes Il sapore del grano (1986) directed by Gianni Da Campo, this one is a rather peculiar production about Lorenzo Lena, a college student who is hired as a teacher in a small town, there he has casual sex with an attractive girl but he also spends a lot of time with Marco Mestriner, his 12 year old student. One day, in the heat of summer, they kiss and that moment changes everything. 

Jean Eustache creates a very intimate world in Mes petites amoureuses (1974), a film that revolves around Martin Loeb, a teenager that experiences his sexuality very intensely in a rather conservative society. Eustache portrays the hardships of an impoverished family and the boy’s experiences realistically and, above all, sensitively. Krabat (2008) is German production based on children’s literature. David Kross is a young boy without home or food, until he’s summoned to a grinder, there he meets a group of young men that work for a mysterious and shadowy figure. Daniel Brühl, however, explains to him that this place is ruled by black magic. Director Marco Kreuzpaintner works again with Robert Stadlober, who was the protagonist of his gay-themed coming of age film “Sommersturm”. Finally, from Korea comes Boksuneun naui geot (2002) -AKA “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance”- a very original and intense story about characters doomed to fatality, I can’t say much without spoiling this, but there are so many unpredictable moments here (such as a group of boys masturbating together while they think they’re hearing a woman moaning in pleasure when in fact she is screaming in agony), there are so many violent scenes, and there is also a weird sense of humor even more defying than the usual black humor. Easily the best Korean film I’ve seen in the past decade or so.

Noviembre fue incluso más internacional que otros meses... y lo digo en serio, la mitad de las películas que vie fueron de Europa o Asia. Pero empecemos con algo que probablemente ya han visto: "Skyfall" (2012), la vigésimo tercera producción de James Bond es dirigida por Sam Mendes, Daniel Craig es el agente 007 de nuevo, y Judi Dench reaparece como M, el elenco también incluye a Javier Bardem como el villano. No he visto todas las películas de James Bond, pero he visto bastantes, y Skyfall es seguramente la mejor, combina acción a raudales con una cierta sensación de melancolía, y es que Bond siente que ha envejecido... por primera vez en décadas, sentimos que al agente 007 podría perder, y la triste escena final nos recuerda que incluso nuestros más amados héroes de la infancia no pueden permanecer tan indestructibles como lo fueron alguna vez. Rara vez disfruto algo del género de acción, pero "Skyfall" fue realmente sobresaliente.

"The Perks of Being a Wallflower" (2012) es escrita y dirigida por Stephen Chbosky y es, sin duda, uno de los mejores films del 2012. Logan Lerman es un tímido adolescente que se hace amigo de Ezra Miller, un chico abiertamente gay, quien le presenta a Emma Watson (Hermione de “Harry Potter”). Esta historia combina la torpeza adolescente, la amistad, el amor y la efervescencia de la juventud en una narrativa realmente fascinante que oculta algunos temas muy fuertes como el abuso sexual a menores. Una extraordinaria película que, una vez más, demuestra que Ezra Miller sabe cómo elegir sus proyectos ("We Need To Talk About Kevin" y "Afterschool" también fueron de lo mejor).

El abuso sexual infantil es siempre un tema controversial, y el director John Crowley lo maneja con delicadeza en "Boy A" (2007), un film que empieza con dos chiquillos solitarios que se hacen amigos, uno de ellos ha sido violado y toda su ira y violencia reprimida estallan un día, y así termina matando a una niña. Cuando la policía los captura, ninguno de ellos confiesa quién mató a la niña, así que ambos son enviados a la cárcel. Años después, uno de ellos, interpretado por Andrew Garfield (famoso por su rol como Peter Parker en "The Amazing Spider-Man") es liberado. Con una nueva identidad y en un nuevo pueblo, él intentará reconstruir su vida desde cero, pero las heridas del pasado quizá no logren sanar. Impactante, triste y muy dramática, "Boy A" es un magnífico logro cinematográfico.

Por supuesto, ningún mes estaría completo sin un par de películas de terror. Vi "Fright Night" (2011), aquí Anton Yelchin es un estudiante de secundaria que piensa sólo en chicas hasta que su ex mejor amigo Christopher Mintz-Plasse le dice que su vecino es un vampiro. Hay mucho humor en "Fright Night" y algunas de las mejores secuencias incluyen a David Tennant (un gran actor británico que interpretó a Doctor Who por años) y hay muchos diálogos hilarantes, por ejemplo, cuando Christopher le dice a Anton: "te llevaste mi Stretch Armstrong para amarrártelo a las bolas y pajearte por una hora". "My Bloody Valentine" (2009), por otro lado, fue una decepción. Se trata de un remake muy pobre, protagonizado por Jensen Ackles y Kerr Smith... vi la original en octubre y es mucho mejor. Realmente disfruté con "Final Destination" (2000) y he visto las secuelas, todas tienen el mismo estilo, y todas decepcionan por igual, "Final Destination 5" (2011) no sería ninguna excepción si no fuera por la última escena, en la que vemos a Nicholas D'Agosto (un buen actor con películas interesantes como “Rocket Science”) y a su enamorada a bordo del avión que se estrella en la primera película (e incluso vemos a Devon Sawa bajándose del avión). 

He querido ver "Tootsie" (1982) de Sydney Pollack hace tiempo, y es un análisis inteligente sobre el género y la normatividad heterosexual; cuando Dustin Hoffman decide travestirse y fingir ser una mujer para obtener un papel en una telenovela todo su mundo cambia, ser un hombre puede ser fácil, pero ser una mujer es bastante difícil para él. El elenco incluye a Jessica Lange y al gran Bill Murray. Soy un gran fan de Jesse Eisenberg y él usualmente tiene mucho criterio al elegir las mejores películas (“The Squid and the Whale”, por ejemplo, está en mi top 100), sin embargo "The Hunting Party" (2007), protagonizada por Richard Gere y Terrence Howard tiene una premisa sólida pero no es tan buena como pudo haber sido. Por otro lado, "Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai" (1999) de Jim Jarmusch, es una gran historia sobre la lealtad y los señores del crimen del mundo de hoy.

Esta vez vi películas de España, Italia, Francia y Alemania, pero empecemos con  Planta 4ª (2003) de Antonio Mercero, un cautivador relato sobre un grupo de jovencitos que luchan contra el cáncer. El talentoso Juan José Ballesta es el protagonista, y no podemos evitar admirar su fortaleza y su coraje, los otros personajes también son adolescentes a los que les han diagnosticado cáncer, no obstante, siguen siendo rebeldes y están siempre listos a hacer todo tipo de bromas (e incluso masturbarse juntos mientras fantasean con chicas). "El cónsul de Sodoma" (2009) de Sigfrid Monleón, se enfoca en la vida Jaime Gil de Biedma (interpretado por Jordi Mollà), uno de los más importantes poetas de España del siglo XX, Gil de Biedma es un exitoso hombre de negocios que proviene de una familia pudiente, todo en su vida parece perfecto excepto por dos cosas: 1) su inclinación por afanes improductivos como la poesía y 2) sus encuentros homosexuales con hombres y chicos están por arruinar para siempre la reputación de su familia. "Clandestinos" (2007) es dirigida por Antonio Hens, quien ya había hecho un notable cortometraje “En malas compañías”, por segunda vez su actor principal es Israel Rodríguez... sin embargo, hay cosas en el guión que no me convencen.
  
Vi de nuevo "La vita è bella" (1997) escrita, dirigida y protagonizada por Roberto Benigni, han pasado años desde que la vi por primera vez. Creo que siempre es difícil hacer historias esperanzadoras, y esa es la intención de Benigni. Entiendo que para algunos "La vida es bella" puede ser demasiado optimista o incluso ingenua, pero igual considero que es un film encantador -aunque ligeramente demagógico- con algunas secuencias inolvidables. También de Italia llega "Il sapore del grano" (1986) dirigida por Gianni Da Campo, esta es una producción bastante peculiar sobre Lorenzo Lena, un estudiante universitario que es contratado como profesor en un pueblito, allí tiene sexo de vez en cuando con una atractiva chica, pero también pasa mucho tiempo con Marco Mestriner, su alumno de 12 años. Un día del caluroso verano se besan y ese momento lo cambia todo. 

Jean Eustache crea un mundo muy íntimo en "Mes petites amoureuses" (1974), un film que se centra en Martin Loeb, un adolescente que experimenta su sexualidad muy intensamente en una sociedad bastante conservadora. Eustache retrata las penurias de una familia empobrecida y las experiencias del muchacho de manera realista y, por encima de todo, sensible. "Krabat" (2008) es una producción alemana basada en la literatura infantil. David Kross es un chico sin hogar y sin comida, hasta que es convocado a un molino, allí se encuentra con un grupo de jóvenes que trabajan para una misteriosa y sombría figura. Daniel Brühl, sin embargo, le explica que este lugar es gobernado por la magia negra. El director Marco Kreuzpaintner trabaja de nuevo con Robert Stadlober, quien fue el protagonista de su película de temática gay “Sommersturm”. Finalmente, desde Corea llega "Boksuneun naui geot" (2002) -o "Simpatía por el Sr. Venganza"- una historia muy intensa y original sobre personajes condenados a la fatalidad, no puedo decir mucho sin arruinar las sorpresas, pero hay tantos momentos impredecibles aquí (como cuando un grupo de chicos se masturban mientras piensan que escuchan a una mujer gemir de placer cuando, de hecho, ella está chillando de agonía), hay tantas escenas violentas, y hay también un extraño sentido del humor, incluso más desafiante que el habitual humor negro. No se me ocurre una mejor película coreana en la última década.

July has been a month of celebrations. At some point between my birthday and my 300th post in the blog I managed to watch several movies. I’ll start with the ones that you have probably seen: The new Spider-Man movie had me slightly concerned a year ago. I thought a new origin story would feel redundant but after seeing The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) directed by Marc Webb I must admit that I loved it. It was necessary to tell the story again through Webb’s point of view and, unlike Sam Raimi, this new director creates a strong emotional link between the audience and the film characters. There are some truly touching moments and the story captures elements of the comic book that were absent or poorly presented in the previous Spider-Man productions. I’m a fan of Tobey Maguire, but Andrew Garfield is a more vibrant and more alive Peter Parker, he’s the shy scientist, the insecure teenager, everything that Stan Lee (who has a wonderfully fun part in the movie) and Steve Ditko developed in their books. Emma Stone (Gwen Stacy) and Rhys Ifans (Dr. Connors) are great, and I would also like to emphasize how sympathetic Flash Thompson is here, thanks not only to an admirable script but also to the histrionic qualities of Chris Zylka (famous for his role as Thor -a sexually ambiguous teenager- in Araki’s Kaboom). The Amazing Spider-Man far surpasses its predecessors. Dark Shadows (2012) may not be the best Tim Burton’s project, but it’s still a very funny story that made me laugh over and over again. Johnny Depp is a vampire that returns to his old town after being imprisoned for two centuries. Everything has changed in 200 years, but some things still remain intact. Michelle Pfeiffer and Eva Green are such great actresses, and this movie wouldn’t be the same without them. 

With The Conspirator (2010) Robert Redford denounces the American system of law, and more specifically the way in which people’s fear has more weight than the laws. When young attorney, James McAvoy is hired to defend Robin Wright (the mother of the conspirator responsible for the death of Abraham Lincoln), all hell breaks loose. Justin Long and Evan Rachel Wood give out some very solid performances too. Tom Hooper’s Longford (2006) is the story of Lord Longford, a man devoted to help others, even jail prisoners, until he meets a woman that has murdered children, and starts a dangerous relationship with this psychopath, a relationship that ultimately will destroy Lord Longford’s political career and reputation. 

John Hughes directed some of my favorite movies about teenagers and high school life, in Pretty in Pink (1986) he writes a very compelling story directed by Howard Deutch. It’s not the typical high school drama or the usual teen comedy. This is perhaps Molly Ringwald’s most memorable role. I really liked Pretty in Pink. Mini’s First Time (2006) is a somewhat risqué tale about a teenaged girl that has sex with her stepfather and then plots how to murder her own mother. It’s a bit of a black comedy and it has a terrific cast (Alec Baldwin, Jeff Goldblum, Carrie-Anne Moss, etc.). I love horror films but I hate bad sequels. And in the horror genre, most of the time, you get a second and sometimes even a third part. I had very low expectations about I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer (2006), but I have to say I enjoyed it a lot more than the previous movie. This was a great surprise, it builds upon the premise of a group of teenagers hiding the truth, and the guilt that eats at them. With a low budget and unknown actors, director Sylvain White does an outstanding work.

Judas Kiss (2011) is J.T. Tepnapa’s most ambitious film to date. Charlie David, a washed-up Hollywood writer returns to his old university to be the jury in the students film festival. There he meets teenager Richard Harmon, after having sex with him, the adult discovers unsettling things about the teen’s past. They both share the same writing talents, the same sexual orientation, the same family history and the same traumatic experience (being raped by their own fathers), is it possible this is just a coincidence or is there something much more disturbing going on? There are some really amazing moments here, and Tepnapa proves his ability as filmmaker. I recommend it. Pat Holden’s Awaydays (2009) is a British production very similar to Quadrophenia. Nicky Bell meets Liam Boyle, and together form a band of young men keen on vandalism and street fighting. Sex is also a very important part of the boys’ life, but what happens when the possibility of a homosexual romance arises? Who We Are (2010) is a short film about two gay boys that fall in love with each other in high school, one of them is out of the closet, the other is the son of a very religious and conservative man.

The gem of the month, without a doubt, is Dans Tom Sommeil (2010) a French film directed by Caroline du Potet & Éric du Potet. I was so impressed with “In their sleep” (English title) that I have decided to include it on my top 100 films. Anne Parillaud is a mother that has seen her own son die, and after running into Arthur Dupont, a teenager that reminds her of her deceased offspring, the nightmare begins. A man is trying to capture the boy and kill him, and she is in the middle of all of it. The sexual tension between the devastated mother and the smart teen is subtle but yet present, the homicidal rampage of the man is both scary and savage, suspense and horror are transformed into art; and as the film progresses, some mysteries are revealed and the conflicts are increased. This is an unforgettable story about psychopath killers. And I absolutely recommend it.

In a similar venue, American Translation (2011) focuses on a teenager with a very active sexual life. The problem is that after sex he always kills the other person. Pascal Arnold and Jean-Marc Barr had already produced the fascinating Chacun sa nuit, but this one is even better. Pierre Perrier is an attractive boy that meets Lizzie Brocheré (a half American, half French girl). They move in together but eventually, Lizzie discovers that Pierre has the insatiable need of killing his sexual partners. Like an omnivorous creature, Pierre has sex with boys and girls, and kills them all. He only makes an exception with Lizzie, but tragedy is inevitable.

Élève Libre (2008) directed by Joachim Lafosse is an extraordinary French film about an underage boy (interpreted by Jonas Bloquet) who experiences the disillusion of academic failure as well as the joy of his first sexual experience with his girlfriend. Due to his low grades, he is about to be expelled from high school and no university will accept him as a student, desperate to fix this, the kid accepts the help of a family friend: a mature man who lives alone. The man turns into his teacher, even his sexual mentor. But soon, heterosexual coitus will be disqualified by this manipulative man and they boy becomes a victim. Will he accept sexual abuse in order to graduate from high school? Does he enjoy being sodomized by this older man or does he hate it? Only French filmmakers are bright and brave enough to ask these questions, and it’s up to us to find an answer.

Homophobia (2012) is an Austrian short film directed by Gregor Schmidinger and starred by Michael Glantschnig. A teenager has joined the army but he gets constantly bullied. He is secretly in love with one of the soldiers in his unit, but after being humiliated he starts contemplating suicide. En forelskelse (2008) is a short film from Denmark, directed by Christian Tafdrup (d) and starred by Allan Hyde, when a young boy meets his girlfriend’s father something happens. He starts feeling attracted towards this older man. One afternoon, the boy and the man masturbate each other, unaware of the possible consequences.

I think the last Russian movie I saw was “Battleship Potemkin”, so when I came across Frantsuz (1988) I decided to see it. The film takes place in the Soviet Union, and it revolves around the life of two children, and their parents. There is poverty but there is also a strange sense of humor. Respiro (2002) is an Italian film about a boy growing up in small fishing town, and coming to terms with the fact that his mother is not a normal woman. Everyone in town hates her, but the boy loves her deeply. With an intense atmosphere, everything we see here feels real and honest. Crónica de un niño solo (1965) comes from Argentina, this a dramatic tale about a boy who has been sent to an orphanage, desperate due to the miserable conditions in which he has to live, he runs away. He heads for his neighborhood, in a marginal area of the city, will he be able to obtain freedom? Shot in black and white, this is a strong and courageous criticism of government politics in the 60s. Finally, I also saw Dinero fácil (2010), a short film from Spain about a young male prostitute that finds himself in the middle of an illegal transaction. Soon, a mercenary is pointing a gun to his head and all hope seems lost… unless the unexpected happens.

Julio ha sido un mes de celebraciones. Entre mi cumpleaños y mi post # 300, me las arreglé para ver varias películas. Empezaré con las que probablemente ya han visto: Hace un año pensaba que una nueva historia de origen sería redundante pero luego de ver "The Amazing Spider-Man" (2012) dirigida por Marc Webb debo admitir que me encantó. Era necesario contar la historia de nuevo desde el punto de vista de Webb y, a diferencia de Sam Raimi, este nuevo director crea un fuerte vínculo emocional entre los espectadores y los personajes de la película. Hay momentos realmente conmovedores y la historia captura elementos del cómic que estuvieron ausentes o pobremente presentados en las tres cintas previas. Soy fan de Tobey Maguire, pero Andrew Garfield es un Peter Parker más vibrante y vivo, es un científico tímido, un adolescente inseguro, todo lo que Stan Lee (quien tiene un momento maravillosamente divertido en la película) y Steve Ditko desarrollaron en el cómic. Emma Stone (Gwen Stacy) y Rhys Ifans (Dr. Connors) actúan estupendamente, y también me gustaría enfatizar la simpatía de Flash Thompson, resultado no sólo de un gran guión sino también de las dotes histriónicas de Chris Zylka (famoso por su rol como Thor -un adolescente sexualmente ambiguo- en Kaboom de Araki). "The Amazing Spider-Man" sobrepasa de lejos a sus predecesoras. "Dark Shadows" (2012) quizá no sea el mejor proyecto de Tim Burton pero es una historia muy chistosa que me hizo reír una y otra vez. Johnny Depp es un vampiro que regresa a su hogar después de dos siglos. Todo ha cambiado en 200 años aunque algunas cosas se mantienen igual. Sin las geniales actrices Michelle Pfeiffer y Eva Green esta película no sería la misma.

Justin Long y Evan Rachel Wood actúan muy bien. “Longford” (2006) de  Tom Hooper es la historia de Lord Longford un filántropo que ayuda incluso a los que están en la cárcel, hasta que conoce a una mujer que ha asesinado niños, y empieza una peligrosa relación con esta psicópata, una relación que finalmente destruirá la carrera política de Lord Longford y su reputación.

Este no es el usual drama colegial o la comida juvenil típica. Es tal vez el rol más memorable de Molly Ringwald. Realmente me gustó "Pretty in Pink". "Mini’s First Time" (2006) es una narración algo subida de tono sobre una chica que tiene sexo con su padrastro y luego planea cómo asesinar a su propia madre. Es una comedia negra con un tremendo elenco (Alec Baldwin, Jeff Goldblum, Carrie-Anne Moss, etc.). Me encantan las películas de terror, pero odio las malas secuelas. Y en el género del terror, la mayor parte del tiempo, hay segundas y terceras partes. Tenía muy bajas expectativas sobre "I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer" (2006), pero tengo que decir que me gustó mucho más que la cinta anterior. Ha sido una grata sorpresa bajo la misma premisa de un grupo de jovencitos que esconden la verdad y son carcomidos por la culpa. Con un bajo presupuesto y actores desconocidos, el director Sylvain White logra algo admirable.

"Judas Kiss" (2011) es, a la fecha, el film más ambicioso de J.T. Tepnapa. Charlie David, un escritor de Hollywood fracasado regresa a su antigua universidad para ser el jurado en el festival fílmico estudiantil. Allí, conoce al adolescente Richard Harmon, luego de tener sexo, el adulto descubre extrañas cosas sobre el pasado del jovencito. Ambos tienen el mismo talento como escritores, la misma orientación sexual, la misma historia familiar y la misma experiencia traumática (ser violados por sus propios padres), ¿es posible que sea una coincidencia o se trata de algo mucho más perturbador? Hay momentos realmente asombrosos, y Tepnapa demuestra su habilidad como cineasta. La recomiendo. "Awaydays" (2009) de Pat Holden es una producción británica similar a Quadrophenia. Nicky Bell conoce a Liam Boyle, y juntos forman parte de una pandilla de jóvenes dedicados al vandalismo y a las peleas callejeras. El sexo es una parte muy importante en la vida de estos muchachos, pero ¿qué sucederá cuando se presente la posibilidad de un romance homosexual? "Who We Are" (2010) es un cortometraje sobre dos chiquillos que se enamoran en el colegio, uno de ellos está fuera del closet, y el otro es el hijo de un religioso ultra conservador.

La joya del mes, sin duda, es "Dans Tom Sommeil" (2010) un film francés dirigido por Caroline du Potet & Éric du Potet. Quedé tan impresionado con "Mientras duermen" que he decidido incluirla en mi top 100.  Anne Parillaud es una madre que ha visto morir a su propio hijo, y luego de tropezarse con Arthur Dupont, un adolescente que le recuerda a su fallecido vástago, la pesadilla empieza. Un hombre intenta capturar al muchacho y matarlo, y ella está en el medio. La tensión sexual entre la madre devastada y el astuto jovencito es sutil pero muy presente, el estallido homicida del hombre es temible y salvaje, el suspenso y el terror se transforman en arte; conforme el film avanza, algunos misterios son revelados y los conflictos se incrementan. Esta es una inolvidable historia sobre asesinos psicópatas. La recomiendo a todos.

De modo similar, "American Translation" (2011) se enfoca en un adolescente con una vida sexual muy activa. El problema es que después del sexo siempre asesina a la otra persona. Pascal Arnold y Jean-Marc Barr ya habían producido la fascinante "Chacun sa nuit", pero esta es incluso mejor. Pierre Perrier es un atractivo chico que conoce a Lizzie Brocheré (mitad norteamericana, mitad francesa). Se mudan juntos pero eventualmente Lizzie descubre que Pierre tiene una insaciable necesidad de matar a sus partenaires sexuales. Como una criatura omnívora, Pierre tiene sexo con muchachos y chicas, y los mata a todos. Sólo hace una excepción con Lizzie, pero la tragedia es inevitable. 

"Élève Libre" (2008) dirigido por Joachim Lafosse es un extraordinario film francés sobre un chaval menor de edad (interpretado por Jonas Bloquet) que experimenta la desilusión del fracaso académico así como el goce de su primera experiencia sexual con su enamorada. A causa de sus bajas notas, está a punto de ser expulsado de la secundaria, y ninguna universidad lo aceptará como estudiante, desesperado por solucionar esto el chiquillo acude a un amigo de la familia, un solterón. El hombre es su profesor, incluso su mentor sexual. Pero pronto, el coito heterosexual será descalificado por este hombre manipulador, y el chico es victimizado. ¿Aceptará el abuso sexual con tal de graduarse del colegio? ¿Disfruta siendo sodomizado por un hombre mayor o lo odia? Sólo los cineastas franceses tienen la valentía y la astucia como para hacer estas preguntas, depende de nosotros hallar una respuesta. "Homophobia" (2012) es un cortometraje austríaco de Gregor Schmidinger y protagonizado por Michael Glantschnig. Un adolescente se ha unido al ejército pero es constantemente maltratado. Está secretamente enamorado de otro soldado de su unidad pero luego de ser humillado empieza a pensar en el suicidio.  "En forelskelse" (2008) es un cortometraje de Dinamarca, dirigido por Christian Tafdrup y protagonizado por Allan Hyde, cuando un jovencito conoce al padre de su enamorada algo cambia. Empieza a sentirse atraído por este adulto. Una tarde, el chico y el hombre se masturban el uno al otro, sin pensar en las posibles consecuencias.
  
Creo que la última película rusa que vi fue "El acorazado Potemkin", así que cuando encontré "Frantsuz" (1988) decidí verla. La cinta ocurre en la Unión Soviética, y narra la vida de dos niños y sus padres. Hay pobreza pero también un extraño sentido del humor. "Respiro" (2002) es una película italiana sobre un chiquillo en un pequeño pueblo pesquero que debe lidiar con el hecho de que su madre no es una mujer normal. Todos en el pueblo la odian, pero el chico la ama profundamente. Con una atmósfera intensa, todo aquí se siente verdadero y honesto. "Crónica de un niño solo" (1965) viene de Argentina, este es un dramático relato sobre un niño que ha sido enviado a un orfanato, desesperado a causa de las condiciones miserables en las que vive, escapa. Se dirige a su barrio, en una zona marginal, ¿obtendrá allí la libertad? Filmada en blanco y negro, esta es una crítica con fuerza y coraje sobre la política gubernamental de los 60s. Finalmente, también vi "Dinero fácil" (2010), un cortometraje español sobre un joven prostituto que cae en medio de una transacción ilegal. Cuando un sicario está a punto de dispararle, la esperanza se pierde... a menos que lo inesperado suceda.
